I stood frozen, as the echo of Mom’s slap rang louder than the pain on my cheeks.

Mom’s hands trembled at her side as she looked at me with fury.

I did not know what hurt the most. Mom’s slap on my cheeks or knowing she still did not love her only daughter.

Why could she not give me the affection I wanted? Staying in the palace made me realize that I needed someone who would listen to me. That I needed my family the most despite how badly they treated me.

My throat tightened.

I wondered what I should do so that she would love me?

“Watch your words,” she hissed. “Ungrateful bitch.”

Ungrateful? Me? Ungrateful? How did I become ungrateful?
