The carriage ride to vael was dark fast and exhausting.

Fear filled the air, making everyone's breath caught in between.

The King was surprisingly quiet throughout the ride, even though it was a long journey, not a single word left his lips.

He just sat across from me like mute child or someone scolded by an adult for talking too much.

But the silence terrified me which even doubled when the vael came into sight.

The frostress had risen from the mountain like something ancient, dangerous, predatory and alive.

My breath quickened, this isn't just a castle, it has something that terrifies me.

The towering hall seem to watch us from above as we approach the threshold.

The air seemed heavier, every instinct of mine scream that I was definitely walking into a trap, but I still furge ahead anyway.

Probably into my grave.

My hands were trembling by now as I followed Ronan walked through endless stone corridors.

“You are safe here.” I heard his deep voice, which seem to vibrate through my bones, but I gave no response.

And I didn't believe him, all I could think of was an escape route.

I felt like a trapped bird, caged and helpless, who wanted nothing but freedom.

This place felt nothing like a fortress, it was more like prison where I could rot.

I was already expecting the enemy to surface.

Ronan stopped before a carved door.

Strange!

A place that hid such a brutal fortress shouldn't be this good.

He gestured for me to stepped inside and I reluctantly did.

Outside the cold was something else and the scent of predators were choking me.

But inside was breath taking.

I saw luxury in another form.

Rich fabric, elegant furniture, everything I was seeing spoke of wealth and royalty.

His room felt like heaven compared to the savage world outside.

But finally I decided to speak out. ”Why am I here?" My voice didn't come out as planned.

I didn't turned around to look at him instead I stare at the mirror in front of me.

My reflection wasn't something I should be proud of.

It was pale, and broken.

Then my eyes shifted to that of Ronan, he stood beside me, calm, untouchable, a man who command authority like God of war.

Anger flushed my face.

“Are you keeping me as a leverage, or is there a dungeon I haven't seen it?” My voice was a bit okay now.

He didn't move, he just stood by the door. "None of those are true.”

His voice was low and calm, sounding dangerously true. ”You're the truth I have spent a life time searching for.”

My stomach dropped, suddenly it started to make sense to me now.

I hadn't been rescued but was captured instead.

“Truth in my world usually comes with a hidden cost.” My voice was cold now.

I turned to face him now with my anger being visible.

Years of humiliation

Years of anger

Years of being unwanted, it just erupted that moment.

“At home, I was called the useless daughter and here I'm called the mate?”

I took a step forward. "You have traded one title for another but you still keep me under locks.“

The fury inside was becoming impossible to hide now

“So tell me Ronan, how's this different from the hole I just crawled out?"

For the first time his jaw tightened.

He took a step forward.

“Your father sold you for his own selfish interests.” His voice was deep and low. ”But I value you more than my own life.”

My breathe caught.

“I'm not locking you up, I am hiding you.”

He took another step closer, then another.

His amber eyes shined brighter. ”Well, you can leave now if you want.”

A pause.

Without another words he crossed the big room way too fast.

Just few seconds and he is miles away.

One moment he was standing miles away and the next minute he is standing right in front of me.

The gear radiating from his body felt like a physical force pulling me.

“The thornclaw pack is here.” he said quietly.

His eyes darkened.

“They don't want a maid, they want the kings head.” His eyes locked into mine. ”And they want the human he took from the action block.”

A shiver raced through me.

“You're not a prisoner here.”

I stared at him speechless, I practically forgot how to breathe.

So everything that had happened was his way of protecting me from everyone else.

“So...” my voice barely above a whisper. ”I'm the centre of this conflict.”

The realization hit harder than the mountain wind outside.

Cold!

Terrifying!

Merciless!

I hadn't escape the war, I had barely been dragged to its heart.

And now standing inside vael keep, I realized the truth.

I wasn't hiding from the storm, I was standing directly next to it.

She raised the silver dagger high above Silas’s trembling chest."Stop!" Devlin yelled, taking a step forward.Wren locked her eyes onto Devlin, her smile widening into something ugly and cruel."Why, little human?" Wren mocked, her blade hovering inches above Silas's heart. "He sold you to the hunters. He traded your life for a seat at my table. I'm doing you a favor."Silas lifted his head, his eyes terrified, blood dripping from his nose onto the stone. "Devlin..." he choked out. "Please..."Devlin stood frozen, her chest heaving, her fingers locked around her knife handle.Ronan took a slow, heavy step forward, his sword pointed straight at Wren’s throat. "Lower the blade, Wren. The crown won't accept a chief's blood for a mate bond. You know the law.""I don't need it to accept the chief's blood to start the fire, nephew," Wren hissed. With a brutal, lightning-fast motion, she plunged the silver blade straight into Silas’s chest.Silas let out a sharp, choked gasp. The pit of b

The silence in the hall turned razor-sharp. Devlin’s hand went cold inside Ronan’s grip. She looked up at him, her heart taking a hard, erratic leap against her ribs. The mark on her neck throbbed once, hot and loud, as if arguing against the very words he had just spoken. "She can break it?" Devlin asked. Her voice was too quiet, almost swallowed by the high stone rafters. Ronan didn't answer right away. He turned his head toward the open archway, his dark brow furrowed as he stared out into the swirling white fog of the northern crags. "The First King forged the crown with the blood of the first bonded pair," Ronan said, his voice flat, low, and devoid of warmth. "It holds the old magic. If an Alpha wears it inside the tomb, they can sever a bond by force. But it requires a sacrifice." "What kind of sacrifice?" "The human's life," Vanya’s voice cut in from the balcony above. She dropped down lightly, landing on the stone floor without a sound, her iron mask gleam

The chiefdom hall didn't smell like royalty anymore. It smelled of spilled wine, pine smoke, and drying blood.Outside, the cheers of the human guards still bounced off the timber walls, but inside, the quiet was heavy. Gerrick’s men were already hauling bodies out into the cold, their iron boots loud against the flagstones.Devlin didn't move from the floor. She sat with her back against the high oak table, Ronan’s heavy head still resting in her lap. His breathing had evened out, deep and slow, but every time she tried to slip her hand away from his coat, his fingers twitched against her wrist, holding her fast."You can let go now," she muttered down at him, her voice rough. "The hall is cleared."Ronan didn't open his eyes, but the corner of his jaw tightened. "The floor is cold," he rasped, his voice a dark, low gravel. "I'm conserving energy.""You're heavy," she said, though she didn't push him off.A shadow fell over them. Devlin looked up to see Gerrick standing at the base

The heavy oak doors of the hall shuddered as something massive slammed against them from the outside. Iron bolts groaned. Dust rained down from the high rafters, coating the Elders’ panicked faces in white powder."They brought a battering ram!" Elder Vane cried out, scrambling behind the high council table.Devlin didn't look at the Elders. She didn't look at her father, who was shrinking back against the wall, clutching his bare shoulders. Her eyes went straight to Ronan. He stood at the center of the room, his broadsword resting low at his side. Blood—a mix of his own and the guards'—dripped steadily from the steel point onto the stone floor. The golden fire in his eyes burned bright, but his chest was heaving, his boots planted unevenly on the flags. He was running on borrowed time, and they both knew it. The raw power he had pulled through the bond was fading, leaving behind the crushing weight of his deep wounds."Vanya," Ronan grunted, not taking his eyes off the shuddering

Devlin pushed the heavy iron grate upward with her shoulder. It gave way with a low, rusty groan, barely audible over the shouting in the main square. She scrambled out of the dark culvert, her knees hitting the freezing mud of the narrow alley behind the chiefdom hall. Ronan rose behind her like a shadow made of steel and leather, his broadsword already resting naked in his hand. Vanya and Corvin slipped out last, crouched low against the rough timber wall."Side stair," Devlin breathed, nodding toward a rickety wooden ladder leading up to a narrow servant door twenty feet off the ground. They moved fast. Devlin took the steps two at a time, her boots silent against the rot-softened wood. She reached the door, slid her knife through the gap in the frame, and lifted the wooden latch from the inside. The door swung open with a soft sigh.Inside, the hall smelled of burning beeswax, stale ale, and the sharp, copper tang of fear. They stepped out onto the narrow timber balcony overlook

The words hung in the freezing air, heavier than the snow falling through the pine branches.Devlin didn't move. She didn't scream or curse. The cold inside her chest simply hardened into something solid and sharp, like a sliver of dark ice behind her ribs."Say that again," she said. Her voice didn't shake. It was flat, quiet, and deadly.Corvin shrank back against his horse's flank, clutching the leather deed tube like a shield. "Wren’s riders reached the eastern wall yesterday at dusk. Your father didn't even draw a blade, Devlin. He opened the main gate himself. The Elders are gathered in the great hall right now, preparing to sign the chiefdoms over to the Thorneclaw alliance."Beside her, Ronan took a single step forward. The snow crunched beneath his boot. Even battered and caked in blood, his presence filled the shadow of the trees. His gold eyes burned low and dangerous in the dim light."He sold his own daughter to Eric," Ronan growled, his voice a gravelly rumble that ma
