LOGINDevlin Ashford has spent her whole life being the daughter her family always forgot. Inside the high walls of the Edevane stronghold, built to keep lycans and wolves out and everything else rigidly in, she learned early that love in her family was a privilege distributed by usefulness and she had never been the most useful child. That distinction belonged to Mara, her older sister, who was beautiful and charming beyond words. When their father arranges Devlin's engagement to Corvin Hale, son of a neighboring chief, it is the first time in her life she has been given something that feels like a future. Corvin was at least decent and had a bright future as the youngest son of a Chief. Mara decides that's too good a future for someone like Devlin. Her parents make him choose, marry Devlin and live as just the youngest son of a Chief or marry Mara and become the chief of Edevane. Corbin makes a choice without thinking twice, he chooses the more attractive sister with a bright future tied to it. Inciting Incident Devlin goes over the wall with just forty coins, a knife and an extra set of clothes. She doesn't make it far before she's captured by slave hunters. In the borderlands auction market, the mate bond snaps in place between her and the lycan king, Ronan. That night he marks her in his room.

Devlin's POV
My vision goes red as I spot Mara clinging onto my fiancé, giggling at something he whispered in her ears.
She sees me seething at the corner and smirks as he places a hand on his chest, fluttering her eyelashes as she gazed into his eyes.
My body moved before I could stop it. I crossed the distance between us in just four long strides.
"Mara Radcliff, get off him." I yelled as I grabbed her wrist tightly and threw her on the floor.
"Ow." She yelped as she fell to the ground dramatically.
"Devlin." Corvin, my fiancé, gasped in shock as he bent to the floor immediately to check on Mara.
I rolled my eyes at Mara as she let her crocodile tears fall. I didn't even shove her that hard.
"What is wrong with you?Why would you just push her to the ground for no reason."
He asked angrily as he inspected the scrapes on her palms.
"For no reason." I scoffed.
"She was holding YOU, my fiancé, in public." His eyes darkened.
"We weren't doing anything wrong."
"Corvin, don't yell at her, she's still your fiancée." Mara said in a little voice as she grabbed onto his bicep.
"Devi has always been the jealous type. "Mara always knew how to push my buttons, how to add fuel to my already burning fury.
"And Mara here has always been a slut, seducing everything and anything in her path."
I barely got the words out before my head whipped to the side hard from a slap. It took some seconds before my sight stopped being blurry but the ringing in my ears continued.
I looked up and saw my mom, her hand still up. "How dare you speak of your sister in that way."
She continued. "Is that the way I brought you up?"
"But Mom, I—""Madam Radcliff, I really don't know what's come over Devlin, she's getting out of control."
Corvin muttered as he shook his head. "It's my fault, I and her father spoilt her too much." Mother sighed.
Even with the tears streaming down my face, I let out a short laugh. "Me, spoiled? You're thinking of the wrong daughter, mother."
I said, my voice shaking. Mother was about to make a rebuttal when Mara made a pained sound on the floor.
Corvin picked her up, carrying her bridal style as mother whispered soothing words into her ear.
"Your father wants to see us all." Mother said without looking back.
I wiped my tears and tried to pull myself together before entering the house. Dad sat at the head chair while mother and Mara sat on the other side.
I sat beside Corvin. He refused to look at me.
I reached to grab his arm but he turned away from me completely.
The pang in my chest got worse. I readjusted in my seat and looked down, fiddling with my hands.
Father cleared his throat and spoke. "I've called you all in here because it has come to my knowledge there's a problem with Devlin's engagement."
Hope bloomed in my chest. Father was actually fighting for me?
"Father, don't be angry. Mara has always gotten her way, that's why she couldn't keep herself from Corvin." I said, trying not to put him in an awkward space.
"Devlin, you have the wrong idea." He said as he stared at me emotionless.
I sat back in my seat confused. "What?" I asked, my brows drawn inward.
"Mara has also shown interest in Corvin." He continued. "I can't be partial."
I shot up from my seat so fast everyone's eyes turned to me. "Partial?" I asked harshly.
"My younger sister indicated interest in my fiancé, what's partial is you giving her a listening ear at all."
"Devlin, where are your manners?" Mother scolded as she held onto Mara's arm.
"My engagement that has been set since I was a child is being questioned and you're asking me about manners?" My voice rose with every syllable. "Devlin, sit down.
Do not talk to your mother like that." Father's voice boomed in the chaos.
I tried to argue back but his sharp glare cut through me. I sat down, my body trembling with barely contained fury.
"Corvin, I'm going to give you a choice." Father said, facing him now.
"You can either choose to marry Devlin and remain just the son of a chief, or" His eyes turned to me. An emotion I couldn't decipher passed through them.
"You marry Mara and become the next chief of Edevane." He said finally.
My heart sank. How was that even a fair choice. My own father was willing to give his chieftaincy title as my little sister's dowry while he had argued over giving me the deed to the Aethervale territory where Corvin's father was chief as my dowry.
"It's not fair." I muttered quietly. "It's not fair." This time my voice cut through the quiet of the room.
"You and mother have always been partial to Mara but you told me to bear with it, she was the youngest."
Corvin grabbed my hand to get me to settle down. The same hand he had avoided touching just moments ago.
I pulled it out of his grasp. "You are both my daughters, I'm giving Corvin a chance to choose." He said, as if scolding an unreasonable child.
"Is that really a choice." The unshed tears caused my sight to go blurry.
"Who would really give up the chance to become a chief." I looked at Corvin but he avoided my gaze entirely.
I laughed to myself. "Looks like he already made his choice." I turned to Mara, finally letting a tear slip.
"I hope you are happy. The one thing I had to call mine you finally had taken away."
I walked out of the room not bothering to look back. I could hear my father's angry voice but I didn't care.
I was done trying to please them. I was done playing second fiddle to Mara.
The smile on Ronan's face vanished, the instant the door swung open."We have one chance," he murmured. The fortress beyond his chambers had settled into the silence that came before dawn. Torches burned along the stone corridors, their flames shinning in the cold draft that drifted through Vael Keep.Devlin tightened the dark servant's cloak around her shoulders."If Corvin refuses to listen?"Ronan's golden eyes met hers."Then we will improvise."Without another word, he reached for her hand. The moment their fingers brushed, the strange pull of the bond warmed her skin.He let go almost immediately."Stay close."They slipped into the corridor like shadows. The castle felt different at night.Empty.Watching.Every distant footstep echoed through the stone halls.Every flickering torch show strange shapes that looked like wolves waiting to pounce.Ronan led her through forgotten servant passages, narrow staircases hidden behind old tapestries, and abandoned storage tunnels that
Corvin swallowed hard, the sharp tip of the blade leaving a tiny red bead of blood on his throat and repeated, "Wren? His face drained as I lower the letter from his throat and stepped back. He rubbed the small cut with shaky fingers starring at me like I had become a stranger. “Then tell me why Wren keep mentioning dawn?" He asked me his voice cracking. “Because the treaty isn't about peace,it's about ownership.” I said, ”Once those papers are signed Aldric controls the trade route, the mines the boarder gate and every chief who depends on them." Corvin swallowed hard. Uncertainty filled the room which made it feel smaller and colder than before. “Do you think you will be made chief, they will use you until your signature dries and they will discard you.” I continued. Corvin opened his mouth, but no words came out. He closed it and looked away understanding now that I understood his weakness better than anyone else. Wren had support, wealth, promises, legitimacy, everything h
The gravity of what we were about to do settled into the marrow of my bones. I knew Wren would come for us, but that wasn't what kept me up at night. We were defying her; we were literally burning down an alliance that had been the law of the land since before any of us were born.If we failed, by morning would bring our own executions. And If we succeeded, we would be running for our lives anyway. But I looked into Ronan’s golden eyes, and the fear he had evaporated, now replaced by a cold, sharp focus."The diplomat’s quarters are at the apex of the southern wing," he whispered, stepping toward the heavy oak paneling that masked the entrance to the servant tunnels. These narrow stone corridors were built into the very bones of Vael Keep, designed to keep the human staff invisible. Tonight, they were our only salvation. "Aldric assigned three Thorneclaw guards to guard Corvin’s door—supposedly for his 'protection', but the message is very clear, to ensure he doesn't go anywhere
The moment the door clicked shut, Ronan turned to me, gripping his hands on my shoulders. His eyes were widely open, they were dark with an agonizing mix of fury and fear."Why did you agree to that?" He asked, he whispered harshly. "We could have captured her, and I will just end everything here.""And then what, Ronan?" I asked, as I couldn't hold myself any longer, a tear finally dropped from my eye. "Aldric would have slaughtered you. The Thorneclaws would have destroyed everything. You know she has my tokens, so she knows what we are to each other."Ronan pulled me closer to his chest, burying his face in my hair. He held me so tightly that I could barely breathe, his heart beating in perfect sync with mine."I don't care about the pack laws, Devlin. All I care about is you. The moment I smelled that human's blood in the hallway, I thought" he paused and breathed out, "I thought I had lost you."I smiled and whispered, "You didn't lose me," I then held tight his leather armor,
He didn't need to be told twice. With his heart hammering against his ribs, Corvin gripped his mangled arm and ran for his life, his boots slapping frantically against the floor of the service hallway.I could hear the sound of his heavy boots against the cold stone until the it faded into the dis
Devlin's POVI dragged myself deeper into the forest, terrified at the idea of my father and Corvin sending guards to drag me back inside the walls of Edevane for punishment. Every step cost something. My body made sure I knew it. The headache had settled into a dull continuous throb behind my ey
Devlin's POVI had been in my room for the past hour angrily packing but no one had bothered coming up to check on me. They were probably still celebrating the news of Mara's new engagement, I thought bitterly. Sounds of mugs clinking together, the local band playing and loud voices congratulatin
