CHAPTER 8

Ashlyn’s POV

“No one.”

The answer to my question shuddered through me as my hand gripped the staircase rail for support and my fingers curled into the hard wood.

Absolutely no one.

Here, I was utterly and truly alone.

The temperature in the hall began to drop. Cool air biting my skin with the force of Hunt’s fury. And the tempest raging in his eyes— my stomach dipped in fear.

But before Hunt could reach the base of the staircase, another figure broke from the crowd.

Lucinda.

Her brown eyes burned with murder as her grey dress cut through the sea of black, straight for me.

Goddess save me.

My stomach dipped again and I had only a second to breathe before she was at the staircase. Shoving past the shocked announcer and marching up without hesitation.

Then she was in front of me.

“Have you lost it?!” Lucinda hissed, her jaw trembling with rage as her hand clamped around my wrist.

“Lucinda, I—“ I started to pull my hand back but she held steadfast, and scoffed shaking her head.

“I don’t know why I’m asking.” She muttered furiously. “You’ve clearly lost your mind. You—“

Then she froze and her gaze sharpened with venom. “Did you plan this? Did your father make you do this?!”

“Lucinda, stop—“ I tried to hiss as her nails dug into my skin. Bruising and sending pain up my arm.

But her eyes had gone wild with the belief of her words.

“You witch!”

Then made to start dragging me down the stairs. “You’re coming down with me. You’re—“

“Stop it!!” I snapped, breathing through the pain and lowering my voice as much as I could with the whole court staring at us. “I didn’t know! I didn’t even know what tonight was. The dowager chose this dress, she—“

“Lady Grace?” Lucinda’s eyes widened in disbelief then narrowed.

“What the fuck are you saying?”

Below us, my words set the court on fire.

“She’s blaming the dowager now?!” Hot whispers began to spread.

“What an evil girl!”

“So convenient.”

“Liar! What an insult!”

My chest tightened and my breath began to shake.

But none of this mattered. None of them.

“Let go.” I growled darkly, pulling my hand from Lucinda’s wrist and looking to the bottom of the stairs where Hunt was standing.

He was one the one who mattered. He—

“Really, child.” The dowager’s tinkling voice cut through the air as she slid from her place in the crowd. “To accuse me while I’m in mourning?”

My gaze cut to her. Horror and disgust burning through me.

But she wasn’t done with theatrics. Not by any means.

In front of the whole court, her shoulders began to shake, and her voice broke with a sob.

“I’m just trying to- to remember my dear husband in peace. T-the memorial was supposed to— oh dear.” She burst into full fledged sobs.

Shaky fingers dabbing at her cheeks with a flowery handkerchief.

“How could you?” She paused, lifting her eyes to me.

Her voice was so filled with hurt that for a moment, my pulse stopped.

Her acting was very convincing.

“Wearing this—“

“That’s enough.” I bit out, cold laughter clawing from my throat.

No wonder the Ashlyn in this world ran away.

“What is this?” My voice rang through the hall. Not caring what they all thought of me anymore as I faced the dowager head on. “You gave me this dress. I resisted but you insisted that I wear it. Who in their right mind would willingly wear red to a memorial?!”

If possible, Hunt’s mother dissolved into even more sobs. “Y-you.” She raised a shaky finger towards me. “H-how could you—“ she hiccuped, unable to speak through her tears.

Sharp whispers and hisses went through the crowd.

Quickly, some court ladies moved to the dowager. Holding her hand, rubbing her back, lending her support.

It was ridiculous to watch.

And Hunt—

I turned my gaze back to my mate.

My stomach swooping in fear. But he just had to believe me.

“Please.” My voice sounded thin to my own ears. As on my own, I moved down the stairs until I was before him.

“Hunt, I didn’t know. I swear it.”

But before he said the next words, I knew in my heart that I was doomed.

CHAPTER 12The sound of Hunt’s voice reverberated through the hall.My spine was frozen, my pulse pounding in my ear, but Hunt’s Beta seemed unfazed. He stood against Hunt’s storm. His back straight as he responded evenly. “We’ve contained the infected man, Lycan. He’ll be treated. Once he regains consciousness, we’ll proceed with the interrogation.”Infected? My pulse skipped as the Beta continued. “As for the guards from tonight.”His face hardened under the light. Almost terrifyingly similar to Hunt’s fury as he growled out. “They’ve been detained. I will find the source of the breach… by any means necessary.”The Beta’s words sent a chill down my spine. But also, my mind was reeling.A breach? In the palace?I was terribly uninformed about this world, and it was beginning to grate on my nerves. Just how much I didn’t understand.“... yes Lycan.” The beta nodded in response to something Hunt had said. “The commander and the princess will return tomorrow.”Injila.My chest tightened

Chapter 11Ashlyn’s POV“What—“ My entire spine went stiff. My ears pricked as I listened again. This time, the terror in the screams had me bolting from my chair. My heart slammed against my ribs as I rushed out of my chambers. The hallway was still deserted. But somewhere in the palace, the cries were getting louder. Along with the sounds of footsteps.Like people running. What on earth was going on?My panic spiked. One hand clutched the front of my robe as against every instinct I rushed towards the source of the mayhem. The main palace was in chaos.Women screaming, servants rushing past me, then the nobles.Everyone was moving in the same direction, some throwing terrified looks behind their backs.Almost like they were running from something.“What’s going on?!” I tried to stop a maid. But the second I touched her arm, she screamed and ran into the crowd. My panic heightened.Without thinking, I rushed past the crowd. Straight to the direction where they were all coming from

CHAPTER 10My spine was still frozen as their voice grew fainter and farther. But my mind ran a million miles per minute. These people planned to kill Hunt. And his father’s death— that wasn’t any type of coincidence. They had killed the late Lycan King, too.By my sides, my hands started to tremble. My breaths, uneven and coming in short spurts as I wrapped my head around it.Images from my past life flashed through my mind.Hunt. Dead. His corpse on the bare floor. And the dirty white cloth they’d wrapped him in.A stabbing pain lanced through my chest, and my tears flowed freely.“… kill him sooner.” “… join his father in Hell.”So they killed him. I suspected. Deep within me, I knew they killed Hunt on purpose and framed me.But to hear their words aloud. To witness them plotting. It was a different kind of pain.Heat began to spread across my chest. In my past life, they killed my husband, and now... they were going to do it again. The same target and the same killers.“This i

CHAPTER 9Ashlyn’s POV“Kneel. Apologize to my dead mate.”Hunt’s words sent another ripple through the breathless court. While I just stood there, half laughing, half losing my mind.A queen never bows her head. A queen never kneels before her subjects.Unless the moment she is crowned. Never before. Never after.“Do you understand what you’re asking me?” My voice was a foreign whisper, even to my own ears.To kneel before the entire court and apologize to a dead woman would be to acknowledge her as the true Luna Queen and me as— “Kneel,” Hunt ordered again. His face, an unmoving mask of hatred.Cold laughter clawed my throat as I shook my head in disbelief. This didn’t make sense. To punish me was one thing. But to publicly strip me of my respect— “No.” My words tasted like ash as my tears blurred my vision. “You can’t do this.” My curled nails dug into my palm as I stood my ground. “I am the high Luna. Even if I wanted to, I cannot kneel before the court.”Sharp inhales went up

The corset dug into my skin with every breath and the red gown clung to my body like a second skin.It was all too much. The servants walking ahead didn’t speak. Neither did I.I had one goal tonight.Hunt.Whatever had gone wrong between us in this world, I would fix it.
