ログインThe guards caught me before I even reached the castle gates.
Four giant men in dark leather armor surrounded me, their silver swords flashing in the pale sunlight. I didn't try to fight them. My leg was throbbing too hard, and my body was completely out of energy. I dropped my small hunting knife into the snow and held my hands up.
Ten minutes later, two of the guards dragged me down a long, dark hallway and shoved me into a massive stone hall.
The air in the room was so cold I could see my breath rising in tiny white clouds. Heavy black banners hung from the high ceiling, and a massive fireplace crackled on the far wall, doing almost nothing to warm the place up.
Sitting on a dark stone throne at the far end of the room was King Kaelen.
He was even more terrifying in person than the stories said. He had broad shoulders, a sharp jaw, and eyes as cold and blue as glacier ice. His dark aura filled the room, heavy enough to make the air feel thick and hard to breathe. He looked down at me like I was a piece of dirt he had just tracked inside on his boot.
"A rogue Omega trespassing on my land," Kaelen said. His voice was smooth, but cold enough to freeze water. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't have my guards execute you right now."
The guards shoved me hard from behind, forcing me down onto the icy stone floor. My scraped knees hit the ground with a dull thud, sending a wave of pain up my bad leg. But I refused to stay down. I forced myself to sit up and looked Kaelen straight in the eyes.
"Because Marcus is coming for your throne," I said, keeping my voice as steady as I could. "And I'm the only person who can help you stop him."
A few guards near the door laughed out loud, but Kaelen didn't even crack a smile. He leaned forward, resting his heavy chin on his fist, his blue eyes locking onto mine.
"Marcus is a weak Alpha of a small southern pack," Kaelen said softly. "He wouldn't dare bring his men across my border."
"He wouldn't attack you out in the open," I shot back, taking a deep breath to steady my racing heart. "He's not stupid. But for the last three years, he's been building a secret army. He has workers forging weapons out of pure silver in the southern caves right now. He's planning a surprise attack on your border in two weeks."
The room went dead silent. The guards stopped laughing.
Kaelen’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "And why should I trust the word of a traitor who murdered her own Alpha?"
"I didn't kill him!" The anger burned hot in my chest, making me forget my fear for a second. "Marcus slit his father's throat while he slept and framed me because I found out about his silver mines! I have the map of his cave base hidden inside my boot right now."
Kaelen stared at me for a long, heavy moment. The quiet in the room was suffocating.
Slowly, he stood up from his throne and walked down the stone steps toward me. Every step he took was silent, like a cat stalking its prey in the dark.
He stopped right in front of me and leaned down, his shadow completely covering me. Up close, his scent hit me rain, pine wood, and cold steel. My wolf, who had been hiding in terror all morning, suddenly stirred inside my chest.
"You want protection," Kaelen murmured, his eyes scanning my cut face and blood-soaked clothes.
"I want asylum," I corrected him, refusing to look away. "You keep me alive, and you help me get my little brother out of Marcus's dungeons. In exchange, I give you the maps, and I lead your warriors straight through Marcus's secret tunnels."
Kaelen reached out, his long, warm fingers catching my chin and forcing my head up. His touch sent a strange shockwave straight down my neck.
"A trade," Kaelen whispered, a faint, dangerous smile touching his lips. "I like a rogue with teeth. But in my kingdom, nobody gets protection for free."
Kaelen moved faster than humanly possible. Before the shadowy beast’s black talons could touch my skin, Kaelen tackled me to the side. We crashed hard onto the floor, rolling across the stone as the creature’s sharp claws slashed through empty air, splintering the heavy wooden table where my soup had sat."Stay behind me!" Kaelen roared. He scrambled to his feet, pulling a broad silver sword from the wall display. The creature let out another ear-splitting shriek. It wasn't a real wolf or a human shifter. It was a shadow-beast—a dark construct made of dark magic, smoke, and sharp, icy claws. Its glowing red eyes locked straight onto my neck, completely ignoring the Alpha King standing in front of it.It was summoned specifically for me, I realized, my blood running cold. Someone didn't want to wait for tomorrow's trials. The beast lunged again, its shadowy jaws snapping wide.Kaelen stepped into its path, swinging his heavy silver blade with terrifying power. The steel sliced right th
"Arrest?" I repeated, stepping away from the soup tray. "I haven't even left this room!""Lady Lyra was found collapsed in her chambers five minutes ago, coughing up blood," the lead guard said, his hand resting on the hilt of his heavy silver sword. "Her maid said you offered her a poisoned bowl in the dining hall. The elders want you in the dungeon."I clenched my fists. Lyra was clever. She knew I had exposed her poisoned soup in front of the whole court. So, she took a tiny sip of her own non-lethal poison to make it look like I had retaliated. It was a classic high-born scheme, and these guards were taking the bait."I didn't poison anyone," I said, keeping my voice dead calm. "Look at the tray on my table right now. It’s laced with sweet-root. Why would I poison her when someone is actively trying to paralyze me?""Tell that to the council," the guard barked. He stepped forward, grabbing my arm tightly to drag me out of the room. Before he could pull me into the hallway, a dark,
Kaelen led me into a private room deep inside the castle. The walls were lined with heavy wood, old books, and a massive fireplace that crackled with orange flames. As soon as the door clicked shut, he turned around to face me. The calm, bored look on his face was completely gone."Explain that mark," he demanded, his voice thick with authority. "The crescent moon wrapped in silver flame. Only my fated mate can carry that crest.""I don't know any more than you do," I said, stepping back until my lower back hit the edge of his big desk. "I didn't choose this. I came here to trade maps, not to find a mate."Kaelen crossed his broad arms, his dark eyes dropping to my neck where the golden light was slowly fading. "Omegas don't mate with Lycan Kings. It doesn't work like that.""Good. Then let's pretend it never happened," I snapped, glaring right back at him. "You keep your kingdom safe, and I get my little brother back. That was our deal."He stared at me for a long, quiet moment. A sm
Kaelen turned back to me, his cold mask firmly back in place, though his eyes still burned with a dark, dangerous heat. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me up off the icy floor."Stay behind me and keep your mouth shut," he ordered, his voice low and firm."I can fight my own battles," I muttered, yanking my wrist free from his grip. "Marcus thinks I'm a helpless Omega. Let him keep thinking that until I rip his throat out."A faint smirk crossed Kaelen’s lips for a split second. "Suit yourself, rogue."We walked out of the dark fortress and up onto the high stone wall above the main courtyard. Below us, Marcus stood near the heavy iron gates, flanked by twenty of his top fighters. He looked clean, well-fed, and arrogant in his black leather jacket and heavy fur cloak. When Marcus looked up and saw me standing right beside the King, his jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth click from fifty feet away."King Kaelen!" Marcus yelled, his loud voice echoing off the frozen walls. "Thank
"What kind of trade?" I asked, my pulse beating fast against his fingers.Kaelen didn't let go of my chin. "Marcus is already sending a formal letter demanding your head. If I keep you here as a guest, it means war today. But if I claim you under ancient Lycan law as my temporary Pawn, he can't touch you without challenging me directly."I stiffened, my hands clenching into fists on the cold floor. A Pawn Mate. It was an old law where an Alpha claimed a rogue to protect them, but it meant complete submission."I don't bow to anyone," I said through gritted teeth. "I've had enough men trying to own me.""You don't have to bow," Kaelen replied smoothly, his eyes locked on mine. "You just have to let me place my crest on your skin so my guards and Marcus know you belong to this territory. Do we have a deal, or do I toss you back into the snow for his dogs to finish off?"I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry as sand. I hated the thought of wearing another Alpha's mark. But my fourteen-
