The sharp, metallic taste of warm blood filled my mouth as I dragged my bad leg through the deep snow.
Every single step felt like pulling an anchor out of frozen mud. The tear in my pants was soaked right through, the skin underneath sliced deep by a silver-tipped arrow three miles back. It burned with a dull, throbbing heat that made my head spin.
Behind me, far down the mountain slope, the howls came again.
Low, heavy, and hungry. Three wolves.
I knew those howls anywhere. I had listened to them outside my cabin window for five long years. They belonged to Marcus’s personal enforcers brutes trained to hunt down rogues, break bones, and drag targets back in chains.
Keep moving, Valeria, I told myself, digging my fingernails into my palms until the sharp pain forced my brain to focus. If you stop now, you die. Or worse, Marcus gets his hands on you again.
My body was ready to collapse onto the frozen ground and give up, but my mind refused. Panicking was a luxury for high-born wolves who had a pack to protect them. I was an Omega. In the Bloodmoon Pack, Omegas who panicked ended up six feet under.
My hand dropped to my waist, my fingers wrapping around the small leather bag tied to my belt. Inside was a rough powder made from crushed silver-berries a wild, bitter plant I had spent three freezing nights gathering along the river. It wouldn't kill a shifter on its own, but it was pure poison to their senses.
I wasn't just running blindly through these dark pine trees. I was leading them straight to the narrow pass at the edge of the jagged mountain ravine. A bottleneck.
"Stop right there, you little murderer!" a voice roared through the trees.
The loud crunch of breaking branches exploded to my left. Jared, my stepbrother’s chief enforcer, burst into the clearing. His massive grey wolf was dripping with thick spit, his yellow eyes wide with the thrill of the hunt. Steam rose in heavy clouds from his snout.
"Marcus wants you back in the dungeons!" Jared growled, his voice a low, rough rumble in his wolf throat. "The Alpha demands justice for his father!"
"I didn't kill the Alpha, Jared!" I shouted back, ducking low as a pine branch swung toward my face. "Marcus slit his throat while he slept and blamed the only person who couldn't fight back!"
"Your clothes are covered in his blood!" Jared lunged.
His massive wolf body flew through the air, his jaws snapping shut just inches from my neck. The smell of raw meat and wet fur hit my nose.
I didn't try to outrun him. Trying to outrun a full-grown warrior wolf on an open slope was suicide.
Instead, I dropped hard onto my side, sliding across the slick ice right under his leaping belly. As he flew over me, I ripped the leather bag off my belt and threw a big handful of the silver-berry powder straight into his open eyes, nose, and mouth.
Jared let out a terrible, high-pitched shriek a raw sound of pure pain as the silver dust burned into his raw skin.
He crashed face-first into a giant boulder and hit the ground hard. He rolled around violently in the snow, pawing at his bloody face and whining like a whipped pup.
The other two wolves skidded to a stop at the treeline, their giant paws kicking up clouds of white powder. They stared at Jared in utter shock, then looked up at me.
I scrambled to my feet, my bad leg almost giving out under my weight. I wiped a mix of snow and blood from my lip, pulled my small hunting knife from my boot, and held another handful of powder up in the air.
My heart was beating out of my chest like a trapped bird, but I forced my back straight and my voice dead calm.
"Come any closer," I spat, staring right into the eyes of the lead wolf, "and I’ll make sure you swallow the rest."
The two wolves bared their teeth, low growls vibrating in their chests. They took a slow, careful step forward, spreading out to surround me from both sides. They knew I was bleeding out. They knew I was hurt.
Before they could leap, a deep sound cut through the quiet forest.
It was a horn. Heavy, booming, and loud. The vibration was so strong it shook loose snow off the high pine branches and sent a chill straight down my spine.
The two enforcers froze instantly. The vicious hunger in their eyes vanished, replaced by pure terror.
We had crossed the border stone three hundred yards back. This wasn't Bloodmoon territory anymore.
This was the Northern Realm the home of Alpha King Kaelen, the Cold Sovereign. A man who executed trespassers without asking questions and hung rogue hides from his outer walls.
"She’s not worth dying for," one of the wolves muttered in a panicked voice, backing away into the thick brush. "Look at her. She’s half-dead anyway. The King’s guards will tear her apart before sunset."
Without waiting for Jared, who was still groaning on the ground, the two wolves turned around and ran back into the shadows of the woods.
Silence returned to the forest, heavy and freezing.
My knees finally gave out. I sank onto one knee, gasping for air as spots danced across my eyes. The adrenaline that had kept me moving for twelve hours was completely gone, leaving me with a cold, heavy exhaustion.
I had escaped Marcus's executioner for today. But I was currently sitting right inside the hunting grounds of the most dangerous Alpha alive.
Get up, Valeria, I forced myself to think. You didn't survive three years of Marcus's abuse just to freeze to death in the dirt.
I took a deep breath, pulled my thin coat tight around my body, and forced myself back onto my feet.
Through the trees, I could see it: the dark stone towers of the Northern Castle, rising into the grey sky like iron spikes.
I didn't run into the woods to hide. I didn't try to build a shelter.
I gripped my small knife tightly, set my jaw, and started walking straight toward those dark towers.
I wasn't going to beg for my life. I was going to make the Cold Sovereign a deal he couldn't turn down.
Kaelen moved faster than humanly possible. Before the shadowy beast’s black talons could touch my skin, Kaelen tackled me to the side. We crashed hard onto the floor, rolling across the stone as the creature’s sharp claws slashed through empty air, splintering the heavy wooden table where my soup had sat."Stay behind me!" Kaelen roared. He scrambled to his feet, pulling a broad silver sword from the wall display. The creature let out another ear-splitting shriek. It wasn't a real wolf or a human shifter. It was a shadow-beast—a dark construct made of dark magic, smoke, and sharp, icy claws. Its glowing red eyes locked straight onto my neck, completely ignoring the Alpha King standing in front of it.It was summoned specifically for me, I realized, my blood running cold. Someone didn't want to wait for tomorrow's trials. The beast lunged again, its shadowy jaws snapping wide.Kaelen stepped into its path, swinging his heavy silver blade with terrifying power. The steel sliced right th
"Arrest?" I repeated, stepping away from the soup tray. "I haven't even left this room!""Lady Lyra was found collapsed in her chambers five minutes ago, coughing up blood," the lead guard said, his hand resting on the hilt of his heavy silver sword. "Her maid said you offered her a poisoned bowl in the dining hall. The elders want you in the dungeon."I clenched my fists. Lyra was clever. She knew I had exposed her poisoned soup in front of the whole court. So, she took a tiny sip of her own non-lethal poison to make it look like I had retaliated. It was a classic high-born scheme, and these guards were taking the bait."I didn't poison anyone," I said, keeping my voice dead calm. "Look at the tray on my table right now. It’s laced with sweet-root. Why would I poison her when someone is actively trying to paralyze me?""Tell that to the council," the guard barked. He stepped forward, grabbing my arm tightly to drag me out of the room. Before he could pull me into the hallway, a dark,
Kaelen led me into a private room deep inside the castle. The walls were lined with heavy wood, old books, and a massive fireplace that crackled with orange flames. As soon as the door clicked shut, he turned around to face me. The calm, bored look on his face was completely gone."Explain that mark," he demanded, his voice thick with authority. "The crescent moon wrapped in silver flame. Only my fated mate can carry that crest.""I don't know any more than you do," I said, stepping back until my lower back hit the edge of his big desk. "I didn't choose this. I came here to trade maps, not to find a mate."Kaelen crossed his broad arms, his dark eyes dropping to my neck where the golden light was slowly fading. "Omegas don't mate with Lycan Kings. It doesn't work like that.""Good. Then let's pretend it never happened," I snapped, glaring right back at him. "You keep your kingdom safe, and I get my little brother back. That was our deal."He stared at me for a long, quiet moment. A sm
Kaelen turned back to me, his cold mask firmly back in place, though his eyes still burned with a dark, dangerous heat. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me up off the icy floor."Stay behind me and keep your mouth shut," he ordered, his voice low and firm."I can fight my own battles," I muttered, yanking my wrist free from his grip. "Marcus thinks I'm a helpless Omega. Let him keep thinking that until I rip his throat out."A faint smirk crossed Kaelen’s lips for a split second. "Suit yourself, rogue."We walked out of the dark fortress and up onto the high stone wall above the main courtyard. Below us, Marcus stood near the heavy iron gates, flanked by twenty of his top fighters. He looked clean, well-fed, and arrogant in his black leather jacket and heavy fur cloak. When Marcus looked up and saw me standing right beside the King, his jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth click from fifty feet away."King Kaelen!" Marcus yelled, his loud voice echoing off the frozen walls. "Thank
"What kind of trade?" I asked, my pulse beating fast against his fingers.Kaelen didn't let go of my chin. "Marcus is already sending a formal letter demanding your head. If I keep you here as a guest, it means war today. But if I claim you under ancient Lycan law as my temporary Pawn, he can't touch you without challenging me directly."I stiffened, my hands clenching into fists on the cold floor. A Pawn Mate. It was an old law where an Alpha claimed a rogue to protect them, but it meant complete submission."I don't bow to anyone," I said through gritted teeth. "I've had enough men trying to own me.""You don't have to bow," Kaelen replied smoothly, his eyes locked on mine. "You just have to let me place my crest on your skin so my guards and Marcus know you belong to this territory. Do we have a deal, or do I toss you back into the snow for his dogs to finish off?"I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry as sand. I hated the thought of wearing another Alpha's mark. But my fourteen-
The guards caught me before I even reached the castle gates.Four giant men in dark leather armor surrounded me, their silver swords flashing in the pale sunlight. I didn't try to fight them. My leg was throbbing too hard, and my body was completely out of energy. I dropped my small hunting knife into the snow and held my hands up.Ten minutes later, two of the guards dragged me down a long, dark hallway and shoved me into a massive stone hall. The air in the room was so cold I could see my breath rising in tiny white clouds. Heavy black banners hung from the high ceiling, and a massive fireplace crackled on the far wall, doing almost nothing to warm the place up.Sitting on a dark stone throne at the far end of the room was King Kaelen. He was even more terrifying in person than the stories said. He had broad shoulders, a sharp jaw, and eyes as cold and blue as glacier ice. His dark aura filled the room, heavy enough to make the air feel thick and hard to breathe. He looked down at m
