Alpha Ryan said his piece, wished everyone a pleasant celebration, and left with Malcom. Just like that, he was gone – leaving me standing alone in front of a room full of staring faces.
He wanted to marry me? The same man who had ordered Malcom to kill me earlier?
No. That couldn’t be right. I must have heard him wrong.
I stood there frozen, my fingers clutching the fabric of my dress so tightly my hands began to ache. Someone tapped my shoulder. I turned, already knowing who it would be.
“You were supposed to come with us,” Malcom said, a faint smile on his lips. I once thought that his smiles were kind. Now, they felt more like amusement.
I didn’t answer. Where would I even begin? My mind was a mess of questions, all circling around one thing – that there was something very wrong with the Lycan King.
“What kind of game is he playing?” Julius asked loudly from the council’s table. “He didn’t consult any of us. He announces this madness after ordering his beta to kill her earlier today.”
The council members erupted into murmurs and nods.
I looked at Malcom, hoping he had heard it. Hoping he understood that Julius had spoken the exact thoughts in my head. His eyes met mine, and I knew he did understand.
But he said nothing.
“You should go back to Lydia,” he said instead. “She’ll prepare you for the ceremony.”
Before I could protest, he guided me off the podium and toward the doors. The crowd followed us with their eyes, whispering and pointing until trays of food appeared and distracted most of them.
Lydia changed my dress again. This one was simpler. She swapped the jewelry for lighter pieces and softened my makeup. When I looked in the mirror, I finally saw myself again, or at least something closer to it.
She mistook my silence for confusion.
“It’s so it’ll be easier when you retire to bed with the Lycan King,” she said gently. “This makeup will come off easily.”
“Retire?” I asked slowly. “You mean… sleep together?”
She smiled knowingly. “You’ll be doing more than sleeping.”
The other women giggled.
“I…”
“You haven’t done it before?” she asked, cutting me off.
I nodded, heat rushing to my face. I had heard Hannah talk about it, joked about it. I had even looked it up once. But the thought of it happening to me like this made my heart race in fear.
“Don’t worry, I’ve heard the king has great… stamina. The pain passes quickly,” she said, smoothening my hair, but all I could think about was her saying it would hurt.
“The ceremony won’t take long,” she added. “Then it’ll all be over.”
I swallowed hard. This was too much. Far too much.
But as she led me back toward the hall, a different thought crept in. He hated me. That much was clear. Why would he want to touch me? He wouldn’t. He probably wouldn’t even kiss me.
I touched my lips without thinking. My first kiss wouldn’t be with him. It couldn’t be. Not with the way he looked at me.
We were just few steps away from the hall when a guard stopped us.
“Alpha Ryan has sent for you, Miss Rain,” he said. “You’re to come with me immediately.”
Lydia gave me a small nod. My legs felt heavy as I followed the guard down the hall to a dark wooden door.
He knocked.
“Come in,” Ryan’s voice commanded.
The door opened.
I froze.
Alpha Ryan sat on the edge of his bed, shirtless. I blinked rapidly, half-hoping that if I blinked enough times, the sight would disappear.
“Duke, get me my shirt,” he said calmly.
The guard handed it to him, but even as he pulled it on, I couldn’t look away. His body was solid, every movement controlled, every muscle clear beneath his skin.
“Rain,” he said, lifting his glass of red wine. “That’s your name, right?”
I nodded.
He frowned. “Use your words.”
“Yes,” I said quickly.
“Good,” he said. “You learn fast.”
He stepped closer, and I felt swallowed by his presence, by his scent. “You’ll need to. The mission you’re about to begin won’t be easy.”
“Mission?” I asked.
He looked at me like I’d said something foolish. “What did you think this marriage was about?”
My chest tightened.
“I’ll be clear,” he said. “I’m not marrying you for love. I’m using your face to draw out the people who killed my wife, Sapphire.”
My heart dropped.
“You will obey every command I give you,” he continued. “If you don’t, your father will suffer. Severely.”
“B-but he did nothing wrong,” I managed to mutter, but he laughed.
“Your father broke an oath he swore as an Alpha. I guess he was deep into his hatred for you that he didn’t notice what he was confessing to,”
“I don’t understand,”
“An Alpha must never mistreat any of his children. And from what he said, it seems he treated you less than a slave. Anyone could see it without being told,” he said, his eyes shining with mischief. “I could punish him for how he treated you.”
He was being very clear. I could either allow my father suffer for all the years he violated his oath and mistreated me, or I could marry him and my father would be spared.
Obviously, I couldn’t let my father suffer. So even though meant another lifetime of being with someone who wouldn’t love me, I lowered my head and said, “I’ll do it.”

The ceremony followed soon after. It was small. Quiet. Heavy. No joy filled the room. People watched us silently, like they didn’t know what to think. I even heard some whisper that I was a witch who had bewitched him.
Alpha Ryan heard it too, but he didn’t react.
Our hands were bound together with a white cloth.
“You may now kiss,” the priest said.
Ryan leaned in and pressed his lips to mine like it meant nothing. I’m sure he’d been with many other women before, so this wasn’t a big deal to him. But to me… it was everything. The kiss was over in a second and I buried my head, my cheeks burning red.
“You did not kiss him back, Luna Rain,” the priest said.
“Uncle,” Ryan muttered.
“I said, you may kiss,” the priest repeated.
Ryan pulled me closer. I saw it then. The way his eyes went distant, the way he forced himself to see Sapphire.
“Just… kiss me back,” he said, barely seconds before his lips crashed on mine, leaving me stunned. I tried to follow his lead, but I was awkward and unsure. I didn’t know what I was doing. I had never been kissed before.
But even though I knew the kisses weren’t for me, something twisted in my stomach, sharp and overwhelming. I gasped softly, my fingers gripping his arm without thinking. But the moment he felt my grip, he pulled away instantly, unable to look at me – no doubt because he hated me.
This was my life now. Bound to a man who despised me. But I would endure it. For my father.
“Wonderful,” the priest said brightly. “All that remains is for the marriage to be consummated.”
I forgot how to breathe.
“Freshen up and meet me in my room,” Ryan said flatly. “I’ll be waiting.”
He walked away, leaving me frozen in place as I remembered what Lydia had said about the pain and his… stamina.
I wished, more than anything, that I could simply disappear.
Ryan I didn’t respond immediately because if I did, I knew I would explode. So, I studied him instead, taking in the ease in his posture, the faint amusement in his eyes. He looked relaxed, but I knew better. With Roderick, nothing was ever casual.“What is it?” I asked eventually. He clasped his hands behind his back, tilting his head slightly. “I’m hosting a party tonight.”I said nothing.“For you,” he added, watching me closely. That earned him a reaction, though not the one he wanted. My expression didn’t change, but something in my gaze must have sharpened, because his smile widened just slightly.“A going-away party,” he clarified. There it was. This was not an invitation. It was a dismissal. It wasn’t that I had planned to leave - not yet. There were still too many loose ends, too many questions that hadn’t been answered. But Roderick wasn’t asking me to go.He was telling me to.And he was doing it in a way that made it seem like a celebration.I let out a quiet breath, some
Ryan I didn’t understand Rain. That thought stayed with me as I stood at the field. One minute, she had been quiet to the point of being invisible. She barely spoke, barely looked anyone in the eye, moved like she was afraid of taking up too much space. Then the next, she did something so bold, so completely out of line, that it forced everyone around her to stop and take notice. She has been so bold since we left Fenuel's pack. But today, she's back to being timid and reserved. I dragged a hand down my face and exhaled slowly, trying to ground myself, but it hadn’t worked. There had been too much noise in my head. Too many things demanding my attention all at once, each one more irritating than the last.First of all, I was annoyed by the fight with Roderick. It replayed in my mind whether I wanted it to or not. Honestly, it was the way he had stood there, completely unfazed, like he had already calculated every move I would make before I even made it. The way he had spoken, lik
RainIt had been three days.Three days since I opened that door and found Ryan standing there, looking like that - like something had been pulled too tight inside him.Three days since he asked why I hadn’t come. And three days since I realized… he hadn’t even been fully aware of what he was saying. He had been drunk.I hadn’t known it at the time. I just stood there, trying to figure out what he wanted from me, how to respond without making things worse. But before I could say anything, Malcolm had appeared behind him, one hand clamping over Ryan’s mouth as if he had done it before, already expecting trouble.“Ryan, no,” Malcolm muttered, half dragging him away.Ryan didn’t even fight it. He just let himself be taken. The door closed, and that was it.Later, I found out why. It was Roderick.Of course all of this was his idea.He had left a specific kind of liquor in Ryan’s room - the kind that loosened his control, that made him say things he normally wouldn’t. He had even sent poo
Rain “So, when are you heading out to see Ryan?” Malcolm asked. He was still hovering by the door, looking like a man ready to bolt at a moment's notice. It was almost funny. It wasn’t like I could actually do anything to hurt him - not yet, anyway. I wasn't that strong.“I’m staying in,” I said. “Just like I have for the last week.”“Um, okay. But the only reason I suggested staying in was because Ryan wasn't around. He’s back now. You could even go taunt Alpha Roderick with those ‘get-well’ flowers like you planned.”As tempting as that was, my mind was stuck on something else.“Why do you do that?” I asked.Malcolm’s brows pulled together. “What do you mean?”“The titles,” I said, trying to keep my voice soft and unassuming. “Why don’t you ever use Ryan’s?”He dodged my gaze immediately, shifting his weight. “I don’t - why are you even asking that?”“It’s just... you call him Ryan, but you call Roderick ‘Alpha.’ It’s a little weird, isn’t it?”“It’s nothing serious,” he said, his
RainRyan moved so fast I barely had time to blink. One second, he was across the room, his focus locked on Malcolm like he was about to tear him apart. He wasn't hiding it anymore - the look in his eyes was lethal. I knew that he would hurt Malcom so badly for this, and if I don't do something, things could get ugly. But before I could say anything, he stopped. It wasn’t a gradual slow-down. It was like a switch flipped, forcing his body to go rigid. The silence that followed hit harder than the noise.“Outside,” he told Malcolm. His voice was flat, way too controlled. “We need to talk.”Malcolm didn’t argue. He just nodded once and got up.“Ryan-” I started, taking a step toward him.His gaze snapped to me, and the words died in my throat.“Go sit down,” he said. “And stay quiet. Like you used to.”It stung more than it should have. For a second, I just stood there, staring. Then something in me pushed back.“Wait, why?” I asked, the word out before I could check it. “You didn’t e
RainI opened my eyes slowly this time. There was no confusion when I woke up - only the dull, lingering pain that reminded me exactly what had happened. My body felt heavy, sore in places I didn’t even know could ache, but at least my mind was clear.“Careful,” Lydia’s voice came almost immediately, softer than I had ever heard it. “Don’t move too quickly.”I blinked, my gaze settling on her as she leaned slightly over me, checking the bandages on my face. Malcolm stood a little further back, arms crossed, watching closely.“You’re recovering well,” Lydia added, adjusting something near my cheek. “Better than I expected, actually.”“I’m proud of you,” Malcolm said.I let out a quiet scoff before I could stop myself. What was he talking about? Proud of what? Me being beaten black and blue?I refused to comment on it. Instead, my thoughts had drifted elsewhere.I was still thinking about what Lydia had almost said - and the way Malcolm had cut her off so quickly.I wanted to ask about
RainPain. That was the first thing I felt when I woke up.It spread through my entire body, like a dull, yet heavy ache at first, then sharper the moment I tried to move. My limbs felt stiff, my head thick, and even breathing came with a faint ache that made me wince internally.I stayed still.Fo

Rain I didn’t realize how bad it would be until it started. Ryan didn’t hesitate. The moment I stepped forward, he moved and everything after that felt too fast, too precise for me to follow. I barely had time to react before I was on the ground, the impact knocking the breath out of me. “Again
RainI couldn't understand their annoyance. It was common knowledge in Nightfall that the elite women refused to bear children, forcing their maids to do it instead.I didn't lie, but somehow, I was the bad guy.I turned to Ryan, fully expecting irritation, maybe even anger.Instead, for the briefe
