Kael's POV

The door shut behind her, and I gripped the edge of the pool and let my head drop.

I told myself I was angry. She had walked into the northern wing and into my bathing chamber, the one room in the palace where nobody was allowed. Anger made sense. Anger was something I knew how to handle.

But anger was not why I had thrown her out so fast.

I looked down at myself and wanted to punch the wall.

Lena's POVThe following morning, Lucy woke me earlier than usual."Mrs. Molly says the royal party will leave after breakfast," she said, placing a travelling dress on the bed.I sat up. "Has anyone explained why I'm expected to go?""She said His Majesty wants you to become familiar with the northern territories."That sounded like a polite answer to a question nobody wanted to discuss. Kael had barely spoken to me since my arrival. I couldn't see what difference my presence would make on an official visit.Still, refusing an order from the Lycan King probably wasn't the best way to begin my morning. While Lucy helped me dress, I asked what she knew about the north."Some of the settlements depend on supplies from the capital," she explained. "The mountain roads were damaged, so deliveries have been delayed.""For how long?""I'm not sure. The servants have been talking about it for days.""Then the people there must be running short of food."Lucy nodded. "Some settlements keep the

Lena's POVBy the time Lucy finished brushing my hair, I had decided that thinking about Chloe was a waste of my time.My sister had always been like that. She could say something cruel, smile as though she had done me a favour, and leave me wondering whether I had missed something important.I wasn't going to give her that satisfaction.Besides, living in Bloodmoon Palace was already complicated enough without adding Chloe's ambitions to my list of problems."You're unusually quiet this morning, my lady," Lucy remarked as she arranged my hair over one shoulder."I'm enjoying the peace."She gave me a doubtful look. "Should I be worried?""Only if you plan to ruin it."Lucy laughed, and for a moment, the room felt less strange.A knock interrupted us before she could reply.Mrs. Molly entered with a small group of servants behind her. Two carried folded clothes, while another held a tray with breakfast."Good morning, Lady Lena.""Good morning."Mrs. Molly glanced at the untouched bre

Lena's POVI was still dripping wet.Lucy nearly dropped the clothes she was folding when she saw me."My lady! What happened to you?""I fell into a pool."Her eyes widened as she hurried towards me. "A pool? Where?""Somewhere I shouldn't have been."I didn't feel like explaining how I had ended up in the Lycan King's arms or why he had looked more disturbed by the encounter than I was. I only wanted to change out of my wet clothes and forget the entire incident.Lucy helped me remove my dress and brought me a fresh one. I had barely finished changing when a knock sounded at the door. One of the palace servants entered and bowed."Lady Lena, a visitor has arrived from Silvermoon. She has requested to see you."I adjusted the sleeve of my dress. "Who is it?""Lady Chloe, my lady."I wasn't surprised. My sister had already tried to take my place once by appealing to the council elders. Since that attempt had failed, she had apparently decided to come and try her luck in person."Show

Kael’s POV“Lady Chloe, Your Majesty. She is already on the road, and she is bringing a formal petition from Alpha Colton, along with letters of support from several council elders.”I stared at Rowan. For a moment, I wondered whether he had mistaken my palace for a courtroom.“A petition?” I repeated.“Yes, Your Majesty.”“And they sent his daughter to deliver it personally?”“Apparently.”I let out a short, humorless laugh. “How thoughtful of them.”Rowan kept his face straight, though I could see the amusement in his eyes. The council had spent months pestering me about my marriage. They wanted a queen, an heir, and a long list of other things I had no interest in providing. The old pact between Bloodmoon and Silvermoon had given them the perfect excuse to interfere with my life.I had accepted Lena Steele because I wanted the noise to stop. That was all. Now, barely days into the arrangement, Alpha Colton had decided to send another daughter to my palace, as if he were returning a

They say the Lycan King can't stand to be touched, that he sends brides home in tears, that he has never had a lover because he thinks no woman is good enough. I have let them think it for years. A cold king is feared, and a feared king is left alone. The truth is a lot less impressive.I wanted things. On quiet nights, when the moon hung over the towers, I lay awake with a body that ached for something I couldn't name. I wanted to be touched. I wanted to know what other men seemed to know without even trying. But whenever a woman cam

Lena's POV “Why aren't you freezing?” I stared at Kael, confused by his question. His fingers were wrapped around my wrist, but before I could answer, I tried to pull away. “I'm sorry for disturbing you. I'll leave now.” I turned towards the door, but my foot slipped on the wet stone. I gasped as I lost my balance and fell backwards into the pool. Cold water swallowed me. I struggled to reach the surface, but my wet dress dragged against my legs. I tried to push myself upwards, swallowing water in the process. Then an arm caught me around the waist. Kael pulled me out of the water and against his chest. I coughed violently, clutching his arm as I struggled to breathe. For a moment, I was too frightened to realise whom I was holding. Then I looked up. His pale golden eyes were fixed on me. “Stop moving,” he ordered. I immediately loosened my grip. “I'm sorry.” He said nothing. His arm remained around my waist, keeping me above the water. I could feel hi
