LOGINCHAPTER 6 — THE KING'S BATH
Lena's POV “Why aren't you freezing?” I stared at Kael, confused by his question. His fingers were wrapped around my wrist, but before I could answer, I tried to pull away. “I'm sorry for disturbing you. I'll leave now.” I turned towards the door, but my foot slipped on the wet stone. I gasped as I lost my balance and fell backwards into the pool. Cold water swallowed me. I struggled to reach the surface, but my wet dress dragged against my legs. I tried to push myself upwards, swallowing water in the process. Then an arm caught me around the waist. Kael pulled me out of the water and against his chest. I coughed violently, clutching his arm as I struggled to breathe. For a moment, I was too frightened to realise whom I was holding. Then I looked up. His pale golden eyes were fixed on me. “Stop moving,” he ordered. I immediately loosened my grip. “I'm sorry.” He said nothing. His arm remained around my waist, keeping me above the water. I could feel his bare chest against mine. The situation was embarrassing enough, but knowing this was the man who had publicly rejected me made it worse. I tried to move away. His hold tightened briefly. “Can you stand?” I nodded. He released me, and I reached for the edge of the pool. My legs were shaking, and the moment I tried to climb out, my foot slipped again. Kael caught my arm. This time, he pulled me out without a word. I landed on my knees beside the pool, coughing and trying to catch my breath. Water dripped from my hair and clothes, forming a puddle beneath me. Kael stepped out after me. I expected him to shout at me for ruining his bathing chamber. Instead, he stood still, staring at his hand. The hand that had held me. His expression was difficult to read, but something about it made me uneasy. “Your Majesty, I'm sorry,” I said. “I didn't mean to fall into your pool.” “Clearly.” I lowered my head. “I'll leave immediately.” I pushed myself up, but my knees were still weak. Before I could take another step, he threw a towel at me. I caught it against my chest. “Dry yourself.” I stared at him for a second before wrapping the towel around my shoulders. “Thank you.” His face hardened. “Don't mistake this for kindness. I won't have a dead woman in my bathing chamber.” The words reminded me of the man I had come to know. I had almost forgotten that he was the same king who had watched a guard die without giving me the chance to explain what had happened. Whatever reason he had for saving me, it wasn't mercy. “Of course, Your Majesty.” I turned towards the door. “Lena.” I stopped. “Do not enter this part of the palace again.” “I won't.” “And you will not tell anyone what happened here.” I glanced at him. “There is nothing to tell.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “See that it stays that way.” I nodded and hurried out. I didn't stop until I reached the west wing. By then, my clothes were clinging uncomfortably to my skin, and I was shivering. Lucy was waiting outside our room. The moment she saw me, her eyes widened. “Lena! What happened?” “I slipped.” “Where?” “It's not important. Please, can you get me something dry?” She hurried inside, muttering under her breath about how dangerous it was to wander around a palace where nobody seemed willing to help us. I changed into a dry dress and sat on the bed while Lucy gathered my wet clothes. But my mind remained in that bathing chamber. Kael had caught me twice. The first time, he had pulled me against his bare chest without hesitation. The second time, he had grabbed my arm to keep me from falling. Yet this was the same man who couldn't stand being touched by women. I remembered the disgust on his face when he rejected me before the entire court. I remembered how he looked at me as though I had personally offended him simply by existing. So why hadn't he pushed me away? Perhaps saving me had been nothing more than instinct. Perhaps he was simply disgusted by the thought of a dead woman in his palace. That explanation should have satisfied me. It didn't. Because just before I left, I had seen something in his eyes that I couldn't explain. For a moment, Kael Wolven had looked more disturbed by himself than by me. I pulled the blanket over my legs and tried to forget the encounter. I was his unwanted wife. He had made his feelings clear, and I had no intention of mistaking one unexpected act for affection. Whatever had happened in that chamber meant nothing. Why had touching his unwanted wife not disgusted him?CHAPTER 6 — THE KING'S BATHLena's POV“Why aren't you freezing?”I stared at Kael, confused by his question. Lena’s POV The carriage passed through Bloodmoon’s gates, and I caught my first glimpse of the palace. Black towers rose behind tall stone walls. Guards stood along the entrance, bowing as our carriage passed. Everything looked grand, but nothing about the place felt welcoming. When we stopped, a woman in a grey dress was waiting for us. “I am Mrs. Molly, the head housekeeper,” she said. “Follow me.” Lucy helped me out of the carriage, and we followed Mrs. Molly inside. Servants moved through the halls, keeping their heads down as we passed. “His Majesty usually takes supper in the great hall,” Mrs. Molly explained. “You will remain in your room until he summons you.” “And if he doesn't summon me?” I asked. She gave me a brief look. “Then you will remain there.” I said nothing more. Mrs. Molly led us to a room in the west wing. It was large, with a comfortable bed, a dressing table, and a window overlooking the gardens. The room was better than anything I had expec
Lena's POV The eleventh bell rang, and Lucy's words returned to me. The guard was going to die. I barely remembered the man. I didn't know what had happened the previous night or why we had been found together. But I knew I hadn't asked anyone to hurt him, and I couldn't accept that he would die for something I couldn't even remember doing. "Can nobody stop it?" I asked. Lucy shook her head. "Alpha Colton ordered the execution. No one will dare challenge him." I left my room before she could say anything else. My father had already made his position clear in the great hall. He had no interest in hearing my side of the story, and he certainly wouldn't risk his reputation to save a guard accused of dishonoring his daughter. Still, I had to try. I hurried down the stairs, with Lucy following close behind. At the entrance to the courtyard, I found my father standing with Henrietta and Chloe. Two guards waited nearby, ready to escort me to the carriage. "Where do you thin
Lena's POV Kael stared at me for a long moment, and I braced myself for him to take back his decision. "Your maid may stay," he said at last. "We leave for Bloodmoon after the wedding at noon. Until then, you stay in this room." He walked out, and the lock turned behind him. I sat on the bed, wondering how a man could reject me in front of an entire hall and still insist on keeping me as his wife. I had no idea what he wanted from me, but I knew better than to expect kindness. My body soon decided it had endured enough. I lay down to rest and fell asleep almost immediately. When I woke, Lucy was shaking my shoulder. "My lady, please wake up!" I struggled to sit. "What's happened?" "The Bloodmoon elders arrived at dawn. They're in the great hall, and Lady Chloe went to them first." Lucy looked close to tears. "She's on her knees, crying. She's telling them the pact is broken and the king needs a new bride." "A new bride?" "Herself." Of course. Chloe's shocked expression th
Lena's POV"Pack law lets the wronged party choose the sentence," Kael murmured, so low that only I could hear. "I choose to keep you." I stared at him. Of all the things I had braced for, that was not one. He straightened and turned to the hall. "Lena Steele is rejected as my mate," he said, and his voice rang off the stone. "But the pact between our families stands, as my elders have wished for two years. She will be my wife in name, and she will carry my name and nothing else. That is her punishment." For a heartbeat, nobody breathed. Then the room exploded into whispers. I watched Alpha Colton's mouth open to disown me, close again, and form a bow instead. "Your Majesty is generous," he said. "My daughter is honored." A minute ago I had been no daughter of his, and now I was honored. Near the front, the girl in pale blue had gone the color of milk, and the older woman beside her, copper-haired and kind-faced, was smiling so hard that her lips trembled. Whatever they ha
Lena's POV The first thing I heard after I died was a man's voice calling me a whore. "I, Kael Wolven, Lycan King of the Bloodmoon Pack, reject Lena Steele as my mate." The words reached me through a ringing fog, and for a moment, they meant nothing. Then a woman's sob broke the silence. "I will not bind myself to a woman who spreads her legs for a guard on the night of our pact," the voice continued, cold and calm. "I will not take a whore for my Luna." A gasp rose from what sounded like a hundred people at once. My head felt heavy, and my arms were so weak they hardly felt like mine. I knew that feeling from patients waking up after being given strong drugs. The dry mouth, the heavy limbs, and the strange feeling of being late to a conversation about your own life. I forced my eyes open. I was lying on a stone floor in a large, dim hall. Candles burned in iron holders on the walls, and there wasn't a single electric light in sight. All around me stood a crowd of peopl
