Serena's POV

I did not want to go to him.

I stood at the graveside with the snow falling on my shoulders and the small wooden wolf on top of the flowers, and I watched Diego at the edge of the crowd. The snow had settled on his shoulders.

He did not move. He did not raise his hand. He waited the way he always waited, with his hands behind his back and his eyes on me and his face as still as a wall. He did not wave me over.

I crossed the garden. The snow was ankle deep at the path.

The crowd was

  • The Lycan king's Forbidden Obssesion   Chapter 139: The envoy's words

Serena's POV The woman stopped in front of the throne."My name is Astrid," the eastern woman said without raising her voice. "I speak for the eastern pack. We have seen the north weakened by the rebellion, and we have come to demand territory."She said it the way a woman says a thing she has said a hundred times before and has never once been refused, and she said it as though she were reading a list. She did not ask, and she did not negotiate, because she did not blink. She demanded. The court went silent, and Diego's hand tightened on his sword. The guards at the doors shifted, and the nobles looked at each other. The fire popped once. Nobody spoke, and nobody moved. She let it sit. "The western forests," Astrid went on. "And the river valley, both of them, in return for our silence."Alejandro did not answer, and he looked at me, so I stepped forward with my hands at my sides."The north will not give up the western forests," I told her. "The north will not give up the river val

  • The Lycan king's Forbidden Obssesion   Chapter 138: The Rival Pack

Serena's POVWe did not have time to talk.Alejandro walked from the library to the great hall with the healer on one side and me on the other, and by the time we reached the doors the court was already gathering. The nobles had been summoned, and the servants had lit the torches. The throne had been swept and covered with a fresh cloth.Someone had placed a chair beside it, and someone had placed a stool at the foot of the throne for Diego. Someone had placed a small table beside the throne with a cup of water on it, though no one had touched it.The great hall had been prepared for a reception in less than an hour. It was the fastest I had ever seen the castle move.Someone had thought to bring the silver candlesticks out of storage, and someone had thought of every small thing a court notices and a frightened man does not.Alejandro took the throne, and the healer stood behind it. Diego took his place at the foot, with his hand on his sword, and I stood beside the throne. The south

  • The Lycan king's Forbidden Obssesion   Chapter 137: The second book

Serena’s POV It was thinner than the treaty as he pushed a second book across the table. It came to a stop in front of me, and he did not push it any further. He waited for me to pick it up.It was older than the treaty. The cover was cracked, and the pages were yellow, and there were no marks on the spine, and the corners had been mended."Read it," Alejandro told me.I opened it. The pages cracked a little. I read the passage."The union of a human and a Lycan will bring either great peace or great destruction. Neither side will know which until the choice is made. The choice will be made by the pair, not by the court, and not by the crown, and not by the treaty. And when the choice is made, the north will not be the same."There was more. The ink had faded where a thumb had rested. I did not read the rest of it. "Do not read the rest," I told myself. "Not here. Not now. Not with him watching."I closed the book, and I read it twice. I closed the book again, and I set it down. The

  • The Lycan king's Forbidden Obssesion   Chapter 135: The prophecy

Serena's POVThe walk back from the garden was long and cold. The snow had gotten into my boots. The healer would not let go of Alejandro's arm, and Beatriz carried Mateo ahead of us, and Diego walked behind with his sword still in his hand. He did not sheath it, and nobody spoke. The great hall was empty when we reached it. The wounded had been moved to their chambers, and the children had been put to bed. The fire had been banked for the night, and the hall smelled of cold ash.Alejandro went to his chambers, and I went to mine. I did not think I would sleep. I fell asleep before my head touched the pillow, and I did not dream. The library still smelled like her blood, and I had to walk past the place where she died to find the book that would change everything.I woke up in my own chambers. The ceiling was unfamiliar. It was the first time I had slept in my own bed since the rebellion started. I had forgotten what my own room smelled like. The fire had been lit while I slept, and i

  • The Lycan king's Forbidden Obssesion   Chapter 135: The silence 2

Serena's POV A moment later Beatriz came out through the gate with Mateo in her arms. He was wrapped in a blanket, and she was walking slowly. She was carrying him carefully. She had been carrying him for a while and she was not tired of it.His face was against her shoulder, and his eyes were closed, and his hands were around her neck. Beatriz crossed to the bench and sat down with him in her lap.She said it without apology. "I cannot leave him, because he will not sleep without me tonight.""Stay," I told her.She stayed. She sat on the bench with Mateo in her lap and the tea still steaming beside her, going cold.Mateo fell asleep against her shoulder after a while. His breathing changed, and it got slower, and his hands loosened on her neck. She shifted him once and then did not move again. Beatriz did not look at the grave. She looked at the gate. Two nobles lingered at the gate. She did not raise it as Beatriz lifted her head and spoke to them across the garden."Go inside," B

The snow was ankle deep at the path. The crowd was dispersing through the garden gate. I watched them go. Nobody looked back.I did not move toward the gate. I looked at Diego and Diego looked at me, and I understood that the crowd was not the thing I needed to see. I was certain of it.The nobles walked with their heads down and their cloaks pulled tight and their hands in their sleeves. Their faces were grey in the lantern light. Some of them stumbled. One of them stopped at the gate to catch her breath. She stood alone until she had her brea

I woke the morning after my meeting with Felipe, and the first thing I saw was the tray of food on the table, still untouched from the day before. The fire had burned low while I slept, and the room was cold enough that I could see my own breath hanging in the air. My back ached from pressing again

  • The Lycan king's Forbidden Obssesion   Chapter 5: The court

Serena's POV The nobles smiled at me whenever I walked through the halls of the ice Castle, and that was how I knew they wanted me dead, because I had learned to read smiles a long time ago, back when I was a child who needed to know whether the person approaching her was going to hurt her or just

Serena's POV I had expected a monster, the kind of monster that lived in the stories my mother used to tell me before bed, with sharp teeth and claws and eyes that glowed in the dark, but when the doors of the throne room opened and the Lycan King Alejandro walked in, I realized that I had been wr

Serena's POV The snow burned my knees through the holes in my trousers, and I had been kneeling for what felt like hours, though time moved differently when you were waiting to die, and I had been waiting to die for as long as I could remember. The chains bit into my wrists, and the metal was so c
