Elowen's POVAs soon as he was out of sight, I moved and tried to look around. But he was back too quickly, before I could even look anywhere. Luckily I heard his footsteps and was seated before he came in.He offered me the apples. I wore a foolish smile that hopefully read 'thank you' and took the apple.I nibbled at the apple and let the sweetness linger on my tongue longer than necessary. He looked at me. Maybe curious, maybe wondering why I was really here— maybe hoping I'd get into bed with him before I left. The apple actually tasted good.Really good. For a moment, I almost forgot why I came.He just sat there and watched me with his curious golden eyes. "I know you may not want to talk about this Elda, but wherever you came from, I'm sure they must be missing you"He inched closer to me. We were now sitting side by side on the bed."But I am glad that shipwreck happened because it brought you to me""That's a very inconsiderate thing to say don't you think?" I asked throu
Elowen's POVI shouldn’t have heard what I did in Montanne’s room, but I'm glad I did.I was just passing by, walking as fast as I could away from the Cellar, where I had just... met Darin.Hares.That traitor. That thief. It was unjust. I knew I had no power to report him or order his room to be searched. If I'd learnt something in my stay in BloodHowl, it's that a servant owns nothing to even report stolen in the first place. That locket was the only tangible piece of a past I couldn't remember. And Hares had taken it. Kept it. Lied about it.So no, he didn’t deserve my pity. Even if part of me flinched at the memory of Montanne’s voice echoing in her room.“If she knew why you were banished…”I had no idea he was banished. And I wondered what else he did that he was so afraid of the world knowing that he would bend to Montanne's will.Maybe I was getting it all wrong.Maybe it was Montanne who asked him to take my locket and destroy it.I wasn't sure, but I didn't careI was just
Damien's POVIt shouldn’t have happened.Again.But goodness me, I didn’t regret it. Not for a second. Her lips still lingered on mine even after she pulled away — like the ghost of something beautiful that couldn’t stay.I watched her leave.I let her.I told myself it was the right thing to do — that if I’d stopped her, it would’ve only made things worse. Afterall, I was going to be married in a few moons from now, and nothing could stop it.But the truth was simpler than that.I was afraid. Of what it meant. Of what she meant. And of everything I would lose if I decided to go after her.I stayed in the cellar a little longer. My heart pounding, breath ragged. Her name was still echoing in my mind like a prayer, like all the prayers I had been offering to the moon goddess.Elda.And then, like a splash of cold water to my face, th
Elowen's POVIt felt so good. Like it should be forever. But I finally found the discipline to pull away from him.The footsteps faded, then disappeared completely. Still, we didn’t move right away. When we finally stepped out, the cellar felt bigger somehow.Emptier.“I should go,” I said as I brushed down my skirt and tried not to meet his eyes.He nodded. “Right. Of course.”We didn’t say goodbye. We just shared one last look — a look that said this wasn’t over. And then I walked away.My heart was pounding. My mind was racing. And I was already missing the way he said my name.*****I made my way up the stone stairs and headed for my room. The special room Montanne had assigned to me.My footsteps were echoing too loudly down the corridor, so I slowed them a bit.The hallway became narrower as I passed Montanne's chambers. The memories of me being dragged away from there by the guards haunted for me a second. The heavy doors of her Chambers were slightly open and I could hear a f
Elowen's POVThe cellar was quiet. The air was cool and musty with the smell of old wood and even older wine. I ran my fingers over the dusty shelves, trying not to think too much while working. I was taking record of the dates of each wine chamber and figuring out which one would be suitable for the event.Yes.I had said 'Yes' to Montanne. I accepted her request to supervise the winery for her wedding celebration. For a moment, I thought maybe I'd lost my mind. But I remembered I was only doing this as a means to an end, and the end was to leave BloodHowl. And maybe Montanne wasn't as evil as I had thought. She assigned me a special room so I didn't have to stay in the maid's quarters and a personal guard who I asked to wait outside my room so I could have some quiet here.It felt so good to be doing something. I didn't even realize how sick and tired I was of lying down in bed all day. It was almost suffocating.Hares wasn't too pleased when I told him about Montanne's offer.
Damien's POVHer lips.I could still feel them.Warm. Soft. Maybe a little hesitant, like she didn't know what she was doing— like she hadn't been kissed in a long time, or maybe ever. But she didn't pull away. EldaThat kiss wasn't planned. Nothing about her is. I only wanted to stop her from hurting herself, to steady her. But when I held her, something in me shifted. I remembered everything so vividly, when I saved her. The curve of her neck when she looked away. The way she clung to me like I was her last anchor to this world. There was just something about her clumsiness, her free will, her foolish decisions and plans.Who would ever think of climbing down a palace through a window with some curtains and bed sheets strapped to a bed leg.But I loved it. Every bit of it.Her wild spirit. Her defiance. It drew me.That was why I couldn't let her know I was King. If she knew, all that fire would melt into submission. She would bow and say "your majesty" just like everybody else.
Elowen's POVAll I could remember was his touch, his kiss. That feeling when he held me. I felt safe.Darin.At least I got his name this time. Something about him seemed familiar, now that I thought about it. It wasn't just the time when I bumped into him while I was searching for the maid's quarters or when he came into my room earlier. It was something deeper, but I couldn't understand how.The door opened and someone came in.The last person I was expecting to see today. MontanneI didn't know how to react. A part of me was scared. All of me was scared.I hadn't seen her since she had caught me in her room, accused me of stealing from her, and ordered her guards to take me to a dungeon to be whipped. And since...her mate, the King saved me from the prison cell with his own arms. I shuddered at the thought. I had never even met him before. I hadn't even seen his face. I still didn't know why he did that and I needed to find out why.Montanne must be furious and here to poison m
Montanne's POV.The court ladies were already seated in the Room when I entered.Their voices were floating around the room. They loved gossip more than anything else, and I was sure that I was the subject of their gossip today. Most of them were not pleased with the fact that the would be Queen of BloodHowl was not taken from within the Pack, but was rather given to a stranger. But I didn't care. The throne was mine already.Their perfumes filled the room and they were all elegantly dressed with their tea tables set in front of them.I walked into the room, wearing my crimson gown that touched the floor behind me lightly. They all kept quiet and stood up when they saw me and bowed lightly. I gave them a soft smile, though it clearly didn't reach my eyes.I knew what they were here for, and how much envy they were filled with."Please sit ladies" I said, taking my seat at the centre of the room
Hares'POVI froze at the door.My hand squeezed at the locket as I tried to contain my anger.I had to. I was standing in front of the King, and he had Elda in his arms. The only woman I was willing to defy Montanne for.The room looked a mess, the sheets were off and the bed was scattered. My stomach churned in disgust.Had they really... on that bed?I clenched my fists and restrained my wolf from growling. But then I noticed even the curtains around the bath were missing. What the hell had gone on in here?”I tucked the locket away in my coat pocket and bowed slightly."Your maje—""That's enough" he cut me off. He carried Elda in his arms and laid her on the bed gently. She looked shaken and scared and I became even more confused."Follow me" Damien said, his eyes caught mine with no expression in them."Wait!" Elda yelled as I turned to f
