CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR.

AURELIA’S POV.

The warm feeling of the morning sunlight on my face, accompanied with the soothing sound of birds chirping was the first thing I heard and felt as my eyes fluttered open slowly. I stretched leisurely, my eyes fixed on the ceiling for a few seconds before I realized how unfamiliar the room I was in, was.

My neck snapped to the side at the empty space beside me on the bed and my entire body stiffened as it all came rushing back to me.

The scream. The nightmare.

Aurelia's POVThe ceiling had nothing interesting on it, which didn't stop me from staring at it for a solid twenty minutes like it owed me answers. My stomach was doing something complicated. Not nervous, I refused to be nervous, just… complicated. I didn't know what today was going to look like. Kaelen had said slow. Rylan had said focus, which could mean anything from gentle guidance to “I will personally make this unpleasant for you and call it character building.”I pulled on my clothes, told my wolf to behave, and went downstairs. The yard looked aggressively organized.Kaelen had set up markers in a wide circle, small stones, evenly spaced, the kind of careful arrangement that said ‘i woke up early and I am taking this seriously and none of you should embarrass me.’ Rylan stood at the far end with his arms crossed. Torin was stretching, which felt deeply unfair at this hour."She's here," Torin said, without looking up."I can see that," Rylan said, looking directly at me."Wond

  • The Lycan’s Tribute: Claimed By My Foster Brothers   Stories of the dark

Kade's POVThe reports smelled like old ink and broken promises, which was fitting, because that's mostly what they were.I worked through the stack the way I worked through everything, without enthusiasm, signing my name to documents that would change nothing for anyone and pretending otherwise. Dying crops in the eastern villages. Water disputes in the south. Three separate complaints about border patrols going missing, all worded carefully enough that nobody was technically accusing anyone of anything.I dismissed the fourth messenger of the morning, reached for my coffee, and found it cold.Expected putting into fact I left it there. The ache behind my eyes had moved in permanently around the time I took the Alpha position and showed no signs of vacating. I pressed two fingers to my temple and reached for the next report."My Lord." My attendant appeared in the doorway with the specific posture of someone delivering news they'd rather not deliver. "The handler is back."I looked

Aurelia's POVSleep and I had officially broken up.I'd been at the window since sometime around the hour where night stops pretending it's still night, watching the tree line do absolutely nothing of interest, until it did.Two figures. Dark clothes, standing at the edge of the trees like they'd grown there. Still enough that I might've convinced myself they were shadows if shadows occasionally shifted and moved. I was downstairs with my jaw set before I'd made any conscious decision about it.Rylan looked up from whatever he was reading. Took one look at my face and that was enough for him to put it down."There are men at the tree line," I said. "Again.""I know." He said, seems he already saw them. "Then why are we standing here…”"Because we can't touch them." He said it with the patience of someone who had already had this conversation in his head and won. "Not without proof they belong to Kade.""They are watching us, that's enough reason to step out”"I know that.""Like we'

Aurelia's POVThe trees stared back at me like they knew something I didn't, which was deeply irritating because they were trees. My bandaged hand throbbed. The courtyard smelled like ash and wet soil and whatever that thing was that had just tried to make a meal out of us. I was still staring into the dark when Rylan materialized at my shoulder."Get inside."No “please.” No “are you okay.”Just, get inside, like I was a dog he was herding out of the rain.I went. Partly out of exhaustion, mostly because arguing with Rylan in an empty courtyard at whatever unholy hour this was felt like a fight I'd lose on principle.Torin came back in twenty minutes later, latching the side door like it personally offended him."Nothing out there," he said, looking at Rylan. "It's gone.""For now," Rylan said. I pressed my back into the couch and stared at the ceiling. Delivered completely deadpan by a man who probably slept with his arms crossed.None of us slept. The sky bled from black into that

  • The Lycan’s Tribute: Claimed By My Foster Brothers   The Weight Of Being Watched

Auriela's POVThe mansion grounds at dawn had a specific kind of quiet that should have felt peaceful and didn't. It felt like something was watching me, which was either instinct or three consecutive nights of bad sleep talking. Probably both.I'd been awake since before the sun bothered to show up, which was becoming a habit I wasn't proud of. So I did what any reasonable person does at five in the morning when sleep refuses to cooperate, I went outside. Alone. In the cold. My life had apparently decided warmth and rest were bonus features, not standard.I walked the edge of the property slowly, hands buried in my sleeves, watching my breath fog in the early light. The trees were still dark, that particular shade of dark that hadn't decided to be morning yet. Everything was quiet except for the birds, who had very strong opinions about the hour and felt no need to keep them to themselves.I was about to turn back when I saw him, or already I assumed it was a he. He was standing ne

Kade's POV I stood at the window and watched them go.Five ferals, maybe six; honestly it was hard to count when they kept snapping at each other every few seconds like they'd been trained specifically to be annoying. The handlers had them chained at the wrist with iron links thick enough to anchor a boat, and they still moved like the chains were more of a suggestion than a rule. One of them lunged sideways and bit the feral next to him. There was a scuffle. A handler appeared from nowhere, smacked them both on the back of their heads without breaking stride, and they kept walking.Efficient. I appreciated efficiency."They leave for Drakos now," Aldric said from behind me.I kept my eyes on the path. "And when they get there?""They will look for proof that the triplets were there." A pause. I could hear him breathing through his nose, which he only did when he was about to say something I wouldn't like. "Or they will die trying."Well. That was cheerful. The ferals had been his su

Aurelia's POV.The silence after the door shut was a different kind of silence. Not the held breath before something happens. The stunned, uncertain kind that follows something no one in the room had prepared for. The elders along the walls looked at each other with the careful, sideways glances of

Aurelia's POV.We walked in with our spines straight and our weapons out of sight. The doors opened and I heard Torin go still beside me before I had fully processed what I was seeing. The hall was full. Not with servants or staff but with elders, each wearing their official robes and arranged alon

Aurelia's POV.The summons sat on the table like something that was alive, breathing and watching us roam around. None of us had touched it since Kaelen set it down. It just stayed there, Kade's words pressed into the paper, certain and carrying the full weight of what refusal would mean.Torin br
