Chapter 1

I dropped the resignation letter and divorce papers onto Rian’s desk.

He finally looked up from his files, his gaze landing on me.

"We've been together for ten years, spent every anniversary together. It was just one missed dinner. Is this really necessary?"

"Chloe’s kid had a fever that night. She’s my subordinate; I couldn't just ignore her."

"Besides, her baby is so young. Sending someone to help her out now and then is just the right thing to do. You're a mother too; you should understand."

"I don't think you've thought this through. If you insist, I’ll sign."

"But you’ll lose the family's protection. You’ll be on your own."

He delivered the warning with his usual boardroom detachment.

Expecting me to back down.

I pushed the two documents closer to him.

"Then sign them."

Rian scrawled his signature in one fluid motion.

As he tossed the pen aside, he said casually, "Davina, we’ve been together for ten years. You know I have no intention of leaving you."

"I admit I’ve looked out for Chloe a bit more, but there’s nothing going on between us."

His eyes returned to the files.

"You know how demanding the syndicate is. I don't have time to play out some soap opera with you."

"You can throw a tantrum, but I won't always have the patience to humor you."

He genuinely didn't believe I would actually leave him.

I didn't bother arguing with him.

The documents were in duplicate. I simply took my copies.

Just then, the door to his private lounge was pushed open without warning.

A soft, feminine voice drifted out.

"Rian, your shirt is too big, I..."

Our eyes met, and the woman's smile stiffened.

"Davina, you're here too."

My gaze dropped to the shirt she was wearing.

It was a loose, pure black silk button-down. Rian’s usual brand, the exact one I had personally bought for him.

Now it was draped over her.

Seeing my silence, she rushed to explain.

"I spilled some water on my clothes just now. Rian was afraid I'd catch a cold, so he let me change into his."

"I was just changing, Davina. You aren't upset, are you?"

She played innocent, but the flash of triumph in her eyes gave her away.

Her little trick wasn't sophisticated; what she was actually smug about was Rian's indulgence.

Whether it was calling him by his first name, freely walking into his private lounge, or wearing his clothes.

A year ago, Chloe interviewed for a junior accountant position.

Among the candidates, she had zero background and wasn't the most capable, but the raw ambition in her eyes was the fiercest.

I appreciated that drive, so I personally brought her into the core accounting team, taught her how to handle the slush funds, and let her present at the council meetings.

She was the only outsider in the business who knew about my secret marriage to Rian.

And she was the first person Rian ever specifically asked me to transfer to him.

In a massive family empire, he claimed she just caught his eye.

Overnight, Chloe transformed, becoming the Godfather’s personal secretary.

A few months later, she suddenly showed up with a baby still in swaddling clothes.

Rumor had it the baby belonged to an ex-boyfriend.

But whispers were already circulating through the syndicate that it was the Godfather’s illegitimate child.

The luxury log cabins at the resort were private, but the walls were far from soundproof. When a woman's shrill voice drifted through the timber from the adjacent suite, I instantly recognized it."...You used to clean up all my messes without a second thought! And now, all you care about is your heir and your ex-wife!"The person on the other end of the phone must have said something cold, because her voice spiked into hysterics."I willingly hid in this freezing wasteland just to be with you! I sent my own baby out to the countryside! What more do you want from me?!""...What do you mean he's just my child? Didn't you swear you'd treat him like your own?! Were you just playing me?!""...You've been divorced for half a year, and now you're suddenly realizing the only woman you love is that boring, stiff bitch?!""Rian! Do you even have a heart?!"Sitting by the fire, I froze, my mug halfway to my mouth. So it was Chloe. It seemed her grand plan to become the next Mrs. Ruthven had spec

When he reached me, he almost looked hesitant."You've been drinking. I'll have my driver take you."I smiled faintly."No need, I can hail a cab."The crisp New York breeze hit my face, mixing with the lingering scent of champagne. It was refreshing.I took a deep breath and looked at him."What are you doing here?"He stared down at me, his eyes hiding a storm of emotions I couldn't read."I wanted to see you. So I came."I didn't press him on how he found me.For the Godfather of New York, tracking down which investment bank I had signed with was child's play.I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing."You've seen me. Was there something you needed to discuss?"He nodded, a desperate edge to his voice, almost like he was begging for credit. "I didn't let Chloe set foot in the estate.""I know.""So... will you come home tonight?"I laughed softly."That's your home, Rian. Not mine."He was rendered speechless for a moment before forcing out, "Before I left, my mother was so furio

Did I still love Rian?I had spent countless nights staring at the ceiling, pondering this exact question.I had tortured myself with hypothetical scenarios:What if Chloe had never come into the picture? What if he had actually been there for me when I was sick? What if he spent just a little more time with Leo?What if he had just shown up for one anniversary dinner?...At first, those scenarios kept me anchored.Because hypotheticals give you false hope. But once the disappointment piles high enough, none of it matters anymore.Through the speaker, his heavy breathing sounded like a caged animal trying to maintain control.I waited for a good while, but he didn't say another word.I had no desire to drag this out, so I moved to end the conversation."Alright, I'll bring Mom and Leo back to New York in a few days.""As for Chloe staying at the house, you don't need my permission, and tell her to stop sending me her sob stories.""Just one thing: if she moves into the estate, I'm kee

Eleanor and I had made a spur-of-the-moment decision last night to go on a vacation to clear our heads.Three hours later, we landed on a private beach in Miami. They say the ocean breeze cures all exhaustion. They weren't wrong. At least out on the yacht, Eleanor looked much more vibrant than when we first took off.But by evening, her peace was shattered by the relentless ringing of her phone.Unable to reach me, Rian had apparently resorted to blowing up his mother's line.Seeing the caller ID, Eleanor’s face darkened, and she simply ordered her security detail to block the signal. That night, in the penthouse suite of the beachfront resort, I had just finished reading Leo a bedtime story and tucked him in.My laptop suddenly started pinging with incoming emails. My inbox, once strictly reserved for syndicate financials, was now flooded with personal messages. Most of them were from Rian."[Image attached] Davina, I didn't agree to this divorce. What is the meaning of this?""My mot

"No, no, Rian is just drunk. I don't want you to get the wrong idea...""I don't have the wrong idea. He's a free man. He can sleep wherever he wants. You don't need my permission.""If that's all, I'm hanging up. Have a good night."The line went dead quiet.Just when I thought the call had dropped, I heard a man's voice gritting his teeth."Davina, you're really that fine with me sleeping at another woman's apartment?""I am your husband. You should fulfill your duty as a wife and come get me."It seemed Rian was incredibly drunk.Otherwise, how could he have forgotten the exact thing I reminded him of just a few hours ago?I sighed softly, having zero desire to argue with a drunken madman."It's late. Leo is asleep. Don't come back tonight.""I'm not leaving the house either. If you're not comfortable on her couch, have Chloe book you a suite.""Chloe is your personal assistant. She should know how to handle logistics.""And don't call again. I'm turning my phone off. Whatever you h

On the road, my phone buzzed again.I checked and saw that Rian had deployed his hackers to scrub the keywords I had just posted. But in our world, there are no secrets.Back at the Long Island estate, I played Legos with Leo as usual, then went out to the garden to chat with Eleanor. She looked a bit apologetic. "Davina, I was just so impulsive..."I squeezed her hand to comfort her. "It's okay. I know you just wanted to stand up for me."Half an hour later, Rian walked through the door.It was one of the few times in the last six months he'd come home this early.Ever since Chloe was transferred, she had used every possible excuse to keep Rian away from home.During critical moments of turf wars, he was busy helping her deal with a petty thief. When Leo was rushed to the ER with stomach pains in the middle of the night, Rian was dropping Chloe off at her apartment and going up for "tea," leaving his private phone in the car.Even on Leo's birthday, he was with Chloe. That day, Eleano
