Chapter 2

Author: Echo
Rian ran New York. There was no way he hadn't heard the rumors.

He just didn't care enough to shut them down.

Just like now, knowing I'd be hurt, he still spoke up.

"Davina, if you have nothing else, go help me handle..."

My phone suddenly buzzed.

The word "Mother" flashed across the screen.

I nodded at him.

"Actually, I have something to take care of. I'll leave you two to it."

With that, I turned and walked out, not giving the man a second glance.

Eleanor was a sharp yet kind woman. She raised Rian and, after his father—the former Godfather—died unexpectedly, used her own iron-fisted methods to stabilize the turbulent family.

I had always respected her deeply, and she treated me like a daughter.

When I spotted her standing by the elevator, sporting her usual sunglasses and vintage silk scarf, I smiled.

"Mom, over here."

The woman, serious just a second ago, immediately beamed.

She pulled a shimmering necklace from her designer handbag and held it up against my collarbone.

"A perfect fit. Happy birthday, Davina."

Seeing the hidden heartache in her eyes, my throat tightened.

My birthday was the day right after our anniversary.

Because I always put our anniversary first, my own birthday usually just slipped by. Over time, Rian stopped caring about it altogether.

This time, even I had forgotten.

But Eleanor remembered.

One of the reasons Rian was so sure I'd never leave him was probably because he knew I couldn't bear to leave a mother-in-law as wonderful as Eleanor.

A colleague walked by and peeked into my office.

"Wow, Davina, did your mom come to drop off a gift again?"

I smiled and nodded.

Rian claimed he had too many enemies, so my identity was kept completely hidden from the outside world.

Even when Eleanor came to visit me, she had to come fully disguised to hide who she was.

Eleanor smiled and pulled out her phone to show me a video of Leo riding a horse at the estate that morning.

When Leo's bright, innocent eyes looked into the camera, my own eyes suddenly welled up with tears.

Eleanor noticed immediately.

She hurried to grab a tissue, but then she spotted the documents sitting on my desk.

She froze.

"Davina, are you and Rian..."

She couldn't finish the sentence, her voice choking up.

If it weren't for Eleanor, Rian and I wouldn't have made it this far.

So I confessed everything to her.

After a brief silence, she gently patted my shoulder.

"It's okay, sweetie. I know. I don't blame you."

"Is Rian with that woman right now? Tell me, and I'll go throw her out myself."

I shook my head.

"There's no need. It doesn't matter anymore."

She hesitated, her eyes growing red.

I knew what she wanted to say, so I gently patted her hand.

"Don't worry, Mom. I'm leaving Rian, not you or Leo. We're still family."

Eleanor nodded, turning her head away to wipe her tears.

Not long after she left, the casino accounts analysis meeting was set to start in half an hour.

Holding a stack of files I needed to confirm with Rian beforehand, I walked up to his office door.

Just as I was about to knock, I heard a gasp from inside.

I pushed the door open instinctively.

Only to find Chloe straddling Rian's lap, her arms wrapped around his neck. Their faces were inches apart.

Seeing me, panic flashed across Rian's face for a split second before his brow furrowed.

"Don't you know how to knock before entering?"

The files in my hands made me feel like a complete joke.

I forced a stiff smile. "Sorry, it seems I interrupted something."

"But let me remind you, this is the office. If you want to get intimate, you'd better find a more appropriate place."

I turned to leave, but Rian called out.

"Chloe tripped, and I caught her. What are you thinking?"

I stayed silent.

Rian paused, his voice softening just a fraction.

"I scraped my hand. Come patch it up."

The luxury log cabins at the resort were private, but the walls were far from soundproof. When a woman's shrill voice drifted through the timber from the adjacent suite, I instantly recognized it."...You used to clean up all my messes without a second thought! And now, all you care about is your heir and your ex-wife!"The person on the other end of the phone must have said something cold, because her voice spiked into hysterics."I willingly hid in this freezing wasteland just to be with you! When he reached me, he almost looked hesitant."You've been drinking. I'll have my driver take you."I smiled faintly."No need, I can hail a cab."The crisp New York breeze hit my face, mixing with the lingering scent of champagne. It was refreshing.I took a deep breath and looked at him."What are you doing here?"He stared down at me, his eyes hiding a storm of emotions I couldn't read."I wanted to see you. So I came."I didn't press him on how he found me.For the Godfather of New York, tracking down which investment bank I had signed with was child's play.I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing."You've seen me. Was there something you needed to discuss?"He nodded, a desperate edge to his voice, almost like he was begging for credit. "I didn't let Chloe set foot in the estate.""I know.""So... will you come home tonight?"I laughed softly."That's your home, Rian. Not mine."He was rendered speechless for a moment before forcing out, "Before I left, my mother was so furio

Did I still love Rian?I had spent countless nights staring at the ceiling, pondering this exact question.I had tortured myself with hypothetical scenarios:What if Chloe had never come into the picture? What if he had actually been there for me when I was sick? What if he spent just a little more time with Leo?What if he had just shown up for one anniversary dinner?...At first, those scenarios kept me anchored.Because hypotheticals give you false hope. But once the disappointment piles high enough, none of it matters anymore.Through the speaker, his heavy breathing sounded like a caged animal trying to maintain control.I waited for a good while, but he didn't say another word.I had no desire to drag this out, so I moved to end the conversation."Alright, I'll bring Mom and Leo back to New York in a few days.""As for Chloe staying at the house, you don't need my permission, and tell her to stop sending me her sob stories.""Just one thing: if she moves into the estate, I'm kee

Eleanor and I had made a spur-of-the-moment decision last night to go on a vacation to clear our heads.Three hours later, we landed on a private beach in Miami. They say the ocean breeze cures all exhaustion. They weren't wrong. At least out on the yacht, Eleanor looked much more vibrant than when we first took off.But by evening, her peace was shattered by the relentless ringing of her phone.Unable to reach me, Rian had apparently resorted to blowing up his mother's line.Seeing the caller ID, Eleanor’s face darkened, and she simply ordered her security detail to block the signal. That night, in the penthouse suite of the beachfront resort, I had just finished reading Leo a bedtime story and tucked him in.My laptop suddenly started pinging with incoming emails. My inbox, once strictly reserved for syndicate financials, was now flooded with personal messages. Most of them were from Rian."[Image attached] Davina, I didn't agree to this divorce. "No, no, Rian is just drunk. I don't want you to get the wrong idea...""I don't have the wrong idea. He's a free man. He can sleep wherever he wants. You don't need my permission.""If that's all, I'm hanging up. Have a good night."The line went dead quiet.Just when I thought the call had dropped, I heard a man's voice gritting his teeth."Davina, you're really that fine with me sleeping at another woman's apartment?""I am your husband. You should fulfill your duty as a wife and come get me."It seemed Rian was incredibly drunk.Otherwise, how could he have forgotten the exact thing I reminded him of just a few hours ago?I sighed softly, having zero desire to argue with a drunken madman."It's late. Leo is asleep. Don't come back tonight.""I'm not leaving the house either. If you're not comfortable on her couch, have Chloe book you a suite.""Chloe is your personal assistant. She should know how to handle logistics.""And don't call again. I'm turning my phone off. Whatever you h

On the road, my phone buzzed again.I checked and saw that Rian had deployed his hackers to scrub the keywords I had just posted. But in our world, there are no secrets.Back at the Long Island estate, I played Legos with Leo as usual, then went out to the garden to chat with Eleanor. She looked a bit apologetic. "Davina, I was just so impulsive..."I squeezed her hand to comfort her. "It's okay. I know you just wanted to stand up for me."Half an hour later, Rian walked through the door.It was one of the few times in the last six months he'd come home this early.Ever since Chloe was transferred, she had used every possible excuse to keep Rian away from home.During critical moments of turf wars, he was busy helping her deal with a petty thief. When Leo was rushed to the ER with stomach pains in the middle of the night, Rian was dropping Chloe off at her apartment and going up for "tea," leaving his private phone in the car.Even on Leo's birthday, he was with Chloe. That day, Eleano
