Chapter 18: Well?
Grace woke up in a large four-poster bed and was confused. It took a moment for Grace to get her bearings and then the events of yesterday came flooding back. The first thing she remembered is that she had a family and actual living Grandpa! The best thing is that he wanted to know her!
Grace remembered her way to the bathroom and when she came back to her room Kitty was standing there.“Oh, am I late for dinner?” Grace said.
“Sorry Grace, you slept through till morning. But don’t worry Mr Anderson understood and said to let you sleep. He wants to meet you in an hour!” Kitty informed her.
“Oh OK, I must have been more tired than I thought! Could you show me to my suitcases please so I could get some clothes?” Grace asked.

A month later, Grace sighed with contentment. She had accepted that her life had changed beyond recognition. Even though she missed being a doctor, Grace's day was filled full of activity. Erin had indeed been teaching her etiquette, but not the traditional sort; the Gang variety! Grace had learnt how to read a room, tell if someone is lying, how to look strong and confident, the basic rules of gangs, the structure and even the Gang code. That was just the start! Xan watched Grace walk down the stairs and tried very hard not to stare at her too much, he did not want to scare her off after all! He could not believe his luck when Grace had so easily agreed to try him out. Xan made sure that he planned the date down to the last detail. But, as soon as he saw he could not remember a single detail. Grace was too busy concentrating on walking downstairs in far too higher heels to notice Xan’s lustful stare. “Why did I let Kitty talk me into wearing these stupid heels?” Grace thought. The momentary lapse of concentration resulted in Grace twisting her ankle and falling down the last couple of stairs. Xan instantly dropped his large bouquet of orchids and rushed to catch her. Grace was suddenly staring into Xan’s caramel brown eyes and could feel herself getting lost. “Are you ok?” Xan asked, his voice full of concern. “Oh my God! I am so sorry, Xan!” Grace squealed as she righted herself.

Grace loved the fact that she was alone for the first time in weeks, alone and free. She did not know what had come over, whether it was the fact she was tired of men trying to control her or she needed space to breathe, but she had easily climbed out of the window! She had taken off her ridiculous shoes and slung them over her shoulder. Grace ran into the park enjoying the moonlight and fresh air, stopping briefly to look at a fountain. When she walked to the other side of the park and noticed a hospital. Grace walked over there with a smile on her face. Meanwhile, Xan and Hank were waiting anxiously for Grace to return. After 20 mins, Hank sensed something was wrong. “Mrs Ling, could you please check the loo to see if Dr Evans is OK?” Hank asked. Mrs Ling nodded and hurried to the female loo. She came back a couple of minutes later, her face white.“I am afraid she is not in there!" Mrs Ling said. “Shit! I knew she was upset!”

Grace knew the theory of being in a coma, but that was completely different from being in one. It felt like she was floating in a black sea, where she occasionally heard snippets of people’s voices. Grace had heard her Grandpa’s angry voice asking why she had not woken up yet. She had also heard Xan’s voice asking for to wake up, along with Kitty’s sobbing. Grace tried to concentrate on the voices that brought medical updates. She had heard the Doctor say she could have a bleed on the brain and needed to be moved to a hospital. Another Doctor saying she needed to have emergency surgery to release the pressure and now it was a matter of time for the brain swelling to go down. “We don’t know how much damage has been done, is any until she wakes up. She is off the ventilator, which is a good sign!” The Doctor had said. Grace had mused how much people talk when they think you can’t hear. Grace had heard her Grandpa crying and Hank trying to comfort
