“He is not going to come back in the morning and beat me up, is he?” Asa asked after Lucas stormed out, slamming the door behind him with a loud bang.

“I doubt that. He acts all tough, but he is just a giant teddy bear inside,” Amy said.

Asa looked at her intently. “So, is he your boyfriend or what?”

Amy bit her lower lip and shook her head. “No. He is not.”

“Then why was he acting like a jealous boyfriend?” he asked.

" It’s…it’s complicated,” Amy said.

Asa arched an eyebrow. “Complicated, huh? That’s just a fancy way of saying I have no idea what the hell is going on.”

Amy groaned, flopping onto the couch. “Tell me about it.”

Asa plopped down next to her, propping his feet up on the coffee table. “Well, from what I gathered, he’s either in love with you, in deep denial, or on the verge of a mental breakdown.”

Amy let out a tired laugh. “I hardly think he is in love with me, but the mental breakdown part might be true.”

Asa took a thoughtful sip of his beer. “Whatever it is, I think y

Landon’s car was parked just beyond the tree line, blending into the shadows. He adjusted his grip on Daphne as she stirred weakly, her breath hot against his neck.“I can walk now,” she murmured.“Sure you can,” he muttered, not slowing. She didn’t argue again. When they reached the car, he opened the passenger door with one hand and gently lowered her into the seat. She winced, her fingers gripping the edge of the dashboard as she fought back a sound of pain.Landon shut the door quietly, then circled to the driver’s side. Once inside, he started the engine and pulled away from the warehouse without a glance back. For a long stretch of road, silence hung between them, thick and jagged.“You really tracked me down?” Daphne finally asked, voice hoarse. He nodded. “Didn’t exactly leave a breadcrumb trail, but I had help.”She looked out the window, face pale in the dashboard lights. “Why would you do that?”“Because I knew you would be in danger once your…um…employer found out that I w

Nico rolled up Daphne’s sleeve with care, almost mockingly gentle as if administering medicine rather than preparing to torture her.Father stepped back, observing the needle poised above Daphne’s skin. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He checked it, his expression hardening into something even colder.“Looks like I can’t stay and join in the fun,” he announced, tucking the phone away. His gaze swept over Daphne, clinical and detached. “I’ve wasted enough time on this disappointment. Nico, Diego—she’s yours to play with. Do as you wish. Just make sure there’s enough left to serve as a reminder to the others.”He adjusted his cufflinks, not even looking at her now. “When you’re finished, dispose of what remains. I don’t care how.”The door clanged shut behind him, the sound echoing through the warehouse like a death knell.Diego’s face split into a grin as he stepped closer. “Finally. Been waiting for this opportunity for years.”“Don’t damage her face too much,” Nico said, rolling the

Daphne walked slowly, letting the warmth of the sun soak into her skin as if she was still on her way to her vacation. But her mind was racing.Diego was smart. He knew she wouldn’t go down without a fight unless he made her choose between that and bloodshed. But he also underestimated her.“Where’s the car?” she asked over her shoulder.Diego tilted his chin toward a dark sedan idling by the curb. “Right there. You sit in the back. I sit with you. No sudden moves, and we don’t have to redecorate the airport in red.”Charming.The inside of the sedan was cool, but Daphne was starting to sweat. If Landon Costello were alive, that could mean only one thing. Father had plans to punish her severely.A third man drove. Silent. Eyes forward. The kind of guy who followed orders without asking questions. She didn’t speak during the ride. Neither did Diego. But his smirk lingered. They passed a rusted chain-link fence and rolled through an open gate.Daphne’s eyes narrowed. The warehouse was m

Daphne adjusted the strap of her duffel bag and pulled her baseball cap lower over her eyes as she walked into the airport. In a few hours, her vacation will begin. But something still felt wrong. Or maybe she was being paranoid. It wasn't like she never got rewarded by Father before. It was rare, but it did happen. She kept walking, her boots silent against the polished floor. But her spine tensed. She felt it...the prickling sensation between her shoulder blades. Like a thread being tugged at the back of her neck. She slowed, just slightly, and glanced at her reflection in the glass of a perfume shop window.Nothing out of place.A couple dragging wheeled suitcases. A group of young women taking selfies. A security guard sipping coffee by the doors. No eyes on her. No obvious threat. And yet... she knew the feeling of being watched. She'd felt it in training, when Father's men tested her alertness, when she failed to detect them and paid the price. Her fingers curled slightly. She

  • The Mafia Boss's Pregnant Bride   236. Back Home

Landon lowered himself carefully from the car, wincing as the movement pulled at his healing wounds. He dismissed his driver with a curt nod and stood for a moment, staring at his new townhouse. He’d purchased it three months ago as a backup. No one knew about this place except his family and a select few he trusted with his life. Perfect for a man who was supposed to be dead.Landon punched in the security code and stepped inside, his footsteps echoing in the empty foyer. The place was sparsely furnished—a leather couch, a glass coffee table, a king-sized bed upstairs.“Home sweet home,” he muttered to the shadows. He dropped his bag by the door and made his way to the kitchen, grabbing a bottle of scotch from the cabinet. No glass. He wasn’t feeling civilized tonight. As he took a long pull from the bottle, the burn of alcohol a welcome distraction from the persistent ache in his side, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He had tasked Max to find out where Daphne was and keep tabs on

  • The Mafia Boss's Pregnant Bride   235. Vacation

Father stared at Daphne like a predator, his cold eyes assessing her from head to toe. The debriefing had gone well—her report on Petrov’s elimination was clinical and thorough, exactly as he’d trained her to be.“The client was very pleased with the Prague job,” Father said, his voice unnervingly gentle. “Very clean. Very efficient.”Daphne remained perfectly still, her face a careful mask of neutrality. “Thank you, Father.”He stopped directly in front of her, close enough that she could smell the faint scent of his cologne. His fingers reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face.“I think you’ve earned a little vacation for doing such a good job,” he said, his lips curving into what might have been a smile on anyone else’s face. On his, it looked calculated. “Perhaps a week in Santorini? The villa there is… quiet this time of year.”Daphne blinked, unable to hide her surprise. Father rarely offered rewards. Only punishments for failure.“I—thank you,” she managed, her mind
