Shadow emerged from the kitchen, a tight smile on his face. Dom lingered in the doorway behind him, arms crossed, studying me with undisguised suspicion.

"Sorry about that," Shadow said. "I see you've met Jinx."

I nodded, absently stroking the cat's glossy fur. It purred loudly, leaning into my touch. "Yeah, she found me."

"He," Shadow corrected with a small smile. "And he doesn't usually take to strangers. You must be special."

Dom made a noise that sounded like a stifled snort, then disappeared back into his room without another word.

"Don't mind him," Shadow said, moving to sit in an armchair across from me. "He's always grumpy when his sleep gets interrupted."

I nodded, not entirely convinced that was the only reason for Dom's attitude. "Is this going to be a problem? Me being here?"

"No," Shadow replied, perhaps a bit too quickly. "Like I said, you can stay the night, get some rest. You look like you need it."

His kindness made me uneasy. No one did something for nothing, especia

The words hit me like a physical blow. I scrambled away from him, my back hitting the headboard as my hand shot under the pillow, grasping the gun."You work for him? Was this a setup?" My voice shook with fury and fear as I pointed the weapon at his chest. "Did you know who I was when you found me in that alley?"Shadow raised his hands, eyes fixed on the gun. "Aria, listen to me. I had no idea who you were until just now. I swear.""Bullshit!" I spat, tightening my grip on the gun, finger hovering near the trigger. "What do you do for him? Are you one of his thugs? His enforcers?""No, nothing like that," he said quickly. "Dom and I do odd jobs. Deliveries mostly.""Drugs?" I demanded, trying to keep my hand from shaking."Sometimes," he admitted. "But also money, messages. We're just couriers, Aria. Low-level. We don't hurt people."I laughed bitterly. "Right. And I'm supposed to believe that?"The bedroom door burst open, and Dom stood in the doorway, his own gun drawn and pointed

As we moved to the kitchen, I kept the gun with me, unwilling to relinquish my only leverage. The black cat followed, weaving between our legs as if completely oblivious to the tension in the air.Dom set about making coffee while Shadow pulled out three mugs from a cabinet."So, what exactly are you proposing?" I asked, settling into a chair at the small kitchen table, positioning myself with a clear view of both exits.Dom slid a mug of steaming coffee in front of me before taking his own seat. "First things first—Cassian will be looking for you. His men are probably already combing the streets."The thought sent a chill down my spine. "How long do we have before they find me?""Not long," Shadow admitted grimly. "Cassian has eyes everywhere, and your description has probably been circulated to all his people by now.""Great," I muttered, wrapping my hands around the warm mug. "So I'm a walking target.""For now," Dom agreed. "But we might be able to get you out of the city if we mo

  • The Mafia Debt   Chapter 13: Price of Failure

I wasn't supposed to be back at the safe house until tomorrow, but plans changed.Walking through the door, I scanned the communal area where my men had gathered. I caught Lucas's eyes immediately—the fear that flashed across his face told me everything I needed to know before he even opened his mouth."What the fuck is with that face?" I kept my voice even. The sign of true power isn't in shouting; it's in the quiet that makes others hold their breath.Lucas shifted his weight, unable to meet my gaze. "We weren't expecting you until tomorrow, boss."I moved toward him slowly. The room fell silent except for the sound of my Italian leather shoes against the hardwood floor."What is going on?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave. I could practically smell the anxiety rolling off him in waves."Th-there is nothing, boss," Lucas stammered, the words coming out in a pathetic stutter that set my teeth on edge.I stopped directly in front of him, close enough to see the sweat beading at hi

I stood under the hot spray, letting it pummel my skin as I tried to make sense of everything.Shadow and Dom worked for Cassian. The man who'd kidnapped me, tortured me, and threatened my father—they were on his payroll. And now I was trusting them with my life. Was I insane? Desperate? Both?I shut off the water and wrapped myself in a towel, wiping condensation from the small bathroom mirror. The face that looked back at me was barely recognizable—dark circles under haunted eyes, a split lip still healing, and a deep bruise yellowing along my jawline. Battle scars from my escape.I dressed in borrowed clothes. When I opened the door, Shadow was leaning against the wall opposite, arms crossed over his chest. His eyes held mine for a long moment, searching. Something in his expression made my stomach tighten."We need to talk," he said, glancing down the hallway. "Not here."I followed him to the small bedroom where I'd been staying. He closed the door behind us and turned the lock w

I had just finished gathering my things when I heard low voices coming from the living room. Shadow and Dom. I couldn't make out the words, but the tone was tense. Moving silently to the door, I pressed my ear against it."—can't just change the plan now," Dom was saying, his voice tight with anger."It's too risky," Shadow responded. "Aria's a liability we can't afford."My heart sank. Was this all an act? Had Shadow been playing me this whole time?"So what's your brilliant solution?" Dom demanded."She leaves tonight," Shadow said. "We do the job tomorrow as planned. Nothing changes for us."There was a long pause before Dom spoke again. "And you trust her not to bring this all down on our heads?""She has no reason to," Shadow replied. "Her interest is in getting as far away from here as possible."Another pause. "Fine. But if this goes sideways—""It won't," Shadow cut him off.Footsteps approached, and I backed away from the door quickly, my mind racing. Shadow had told Dom abou

AriaI stood frozen, the duffel bag suddenly heavy on my shoulder, as Cassian stepped through the wreckage of the doorway, flanked by his men.His eyes found mine immediately. The slight upturn of his lips wasn't a smile—it was the satisfied look of a predator who'd cornered its prey."Well," he said, his cultured voice at odds with the violence of their entry, "isn't this cozy?"Nobody moved. The team had their weapons trained on all of us. I gripped my gun tighter, though I knew it was useless against so many."Aria," Cassian said, his gaze never leaving mine. "Put the gun down before someone gets hurt."My hand trembled, but I kept the weapon pointed at him. "Stay back."His expression didn't change, but something dangerous flickered in his eyes. "I won't ask again."I glanced quickly at Shadow and Dom. Shadow looked tense and confused, his eyes darting between Cassian and Dom. Dom's face was carefully blank, giving nothing away, but something about his posture seemed almost... rel

AriaI couldn't sleep. Thirst gripped me, leaving my mouth dry and longing for water. The digital clock on the nightstand glowed 2:17 AM in harsh red numbers that seemed to make fun of my restlessness. I tossed the sheets aside and swung my legs over the edge of the bed, my bare feet meeting the cool hardwood floor.I ventured out of my room then paused at the top of the grand staircase, listening for any signs of movement. Nothing. Just the distant ticking of an antique clock."Kitchen," I murmured to myself. "Downstairs and... left? Right?"Quietly, I descended the stairs, wincing each time a step creaked. The last thing I wanted was to alert anyone to my midnight wandering. As I reached the bottom, I hesitated, trying to orient myself in the floor plan.A faint gleam of stainless steel caught my eye from a doorway to the left. I headed toward it.The kitchen was massive—all gleaming countertops and professional-grade appliances. It looked barely used, like a showroom rather than a

I became acutely aware of how close we were—him standing between my knees as I perched on the counter, his hands still resting lightly on my bandaged foot. The kitchen felt suddenly smaller, the air between us heavier. With a gentle step, I descended from the counter, closing the distance between us as I took a few steps towards Cassian. My hands instinctively moved towards his chest, feeling the rapid thud of his heart beneath my touch. Our eyes locked, and I felt myself getting lost again in the intensity of his gaze."Your heart's racing," I observed, surprised by my own boldness."Adrenaline," he replied, but his voice had dropped an octave, taking on a rough quality that sent a shiver down my spine. As I leaned in, closing the gap between us, I could sense his eyes drifting towards my lips. I turned, surprised by the hardness in his tone."I love you more than I've ever loved anything in this life," he continued. "But I can't keep doing this dance. I can't keep watching you run away when things get hard.""Things get hard?" I echoed incredulously. "We were kidnapped, Cassian. Tortured." "And I'm still here," he said fiercely. "Standing right in front of you, asking you to stay and fight for us instead of running away."His words hit their mark. Was that what I was doing? Running away when I should be fighting?"I don't know how to fight this toxicity," I admitted, my voice small.Cassian took a step toward me, careful, like I was a wounded animal that might bolt. "Together," he said simply. "We fight it together."I shook my head, tears flowing freely now. "It's not that simple.""It is," he insisted. "It's the simplest thing in the world, Aria. I love you. You love me. Everything else, we figure out as we go.""And what happens the next time someone comes for us? The n

  • The Mafia Debt   Chapter 107: If You Walk Out That Door…

Cassian's POVWe're walking through the hotel gardens the next day. Aria has been talking non-stop for the past twenty minutes, her voice filling the space between us with stories I've heard a thousand times before. Normally, I'd find it endearing, the way she rambles when she's nervous or trying to distract herself. But tonight, it just highlights how desperately she's trying to pretend everything's normal.Nothing about this is normal. Not the way my skin still crawls with the memory of Charlie's hands on me. Not the hollow ache in my chest when I think about Aria being forced to watch. I listen to her, smiling at the appropriate moments, even though I already know where each story will lead. But I can't maintain the facade. A bitter chuckle escapes me, cutting her off mid-sentence.She turns to me, confusion clouding her features. "What?""Do you ever stop for air?" I ask, trying to divert her attention. She stops walking and crosses her arms over her chest, her expression shiftin

  • The Mafia Debt   Chapter 106: A Break, Together

Aria's POVI couldn’t sleep so I sit on the balcony, knees pulled to my chest.I know it wasn't entirely his fault. I know that. But the memory—it replays in endless, torturous loops. Each time it feels like another piece of my heart shatters.I stare out at the city, wondering if love is supposed to feel this way—so heavy and suffocating at times that you're unsure if you can breathe. I love Cassian. My love for him runs deep, twisting through every part of me. He's my other half, my anchor. But with that love always comes something darker. Something I can't shake. A bad omen, hanging over us like a shadow. Could we ever escape it?Could we ever live a normal life?I remember once asking him that very question, if we could ever be normal. His answer was distant, almost resigned, as if the idea of "normal" wasn't in the cards for us. Maybe it never had been.Is this my new normal? Constantly afraid, constantly in danger, watching the man I love be violated while I'm forced to watch?T

  • The Mafia Debt   Chapter 105: The Night Love Wasn’t Enough

Cassian's POV"Keep your hands to yourself. Don’t touch me." she says, her voice flat. "I'm done with you and your fucked up lifestyle."I stand frozen in the middle of the room, blood still warm on my knuckles, watching as she places the gun in my hands. Her fingers are ice against mine. There's something vacant in her eyes—something I've never seen before. Not fear or shock, but something worse: emptiness. The rejection hits harder than any of Dom's blows. My throat constricts, words dying before they form. What the fuck am I supposed to say? That I'm sorry she had to watch Charlie violate me? That I'm sorry I couldn't protect her from seeing that?"Aria—""No." She cuts me off, wrapping her arms around herself. "I need space. I need... not this." Her eyes dart around the basement, on Charlie's body sprawled in a pool of crimson, on Dom's unconscious form. "I can't breathe down here."She turns abruptly, stumbling toward the stairs. I follow, each step sending pain shooting through

Aria's POVCharlie continues her assault, making obscene noises as she works, and I feel my stomach rolling in nausea. My vision blurs as tears well up, and I choke back a sob. I want to scream, to fight, to do anything to stop this, but I'm helpless, trapped in this nightmare.Cassian's eyes are on me the whole time, as if he's trying to communicate something, some silent message of strength, of endurance. But I can see the pain in his gaze, the torment of being unable to stop what's happening. And then, suddenly. Cassian's hand shoots out out of his restraints, grabbing Charlie's hair in a grip so tight it must be painful.Charlie's eyes widen in shock and fear as his grip tightens. Dom lurches forward with a shout, but he's too late. Cassian has already flung Charlie across the room. She crashes into the wine rack, bottles shattering around her as she falls.Dom moved like a snake, delivering a brutal kick to Cassian's ribs that sends him crashing to the ground. The sound of his bo

  • The Mafia Debt   Chapter 103: Anything for Love

Aria's POVI sit rigidly in the basement they let us into—our own basement, turned prison—my heart hammering against my ribcage so violently I fear it might shatter. Across from me sits Cassian. He's tense, every muscle in his body coiled tight like a spring ready to snap, eyes darting between me and Dom, calculating, always calculating.Dom stands between us. "We're going to play a game," he announces. "It's called Anything for Love." He smirks, savoring each syllable. "I want to see just how far the great Cassian Romano will go to protect his precious Aria.""If you touch her—""Ah, ah, ah," Dom interrupts, wagging a finger like he's scolding a child. "No threats, Cassian. Remember who holds the power now." His gaze slides to me, making my skin crawl. "And if you don't comply..." He lets the threat hang in the air, but it's clear—if Cassian doesn't play along, I'm the one who'll suffer. The basement feels smaller suddenly, the air thicker."Cassian," I start, trying to sound brave,

  • The Mafia Debt   Chapter 102: Siblings from Hell

Aria's POV"I was beginning to lose my patience," Dom says, his eyes narrowing as he glares at the woman who just entered. She strides in with a confidence that makes my skin crawl, her bright orange hair cascading down her shoulders like liquid fire. The leather mini-skirt she's wearing barely covers anything, and her top—if you could call that scrap of fabric a top—leaves nothing to the imagination. Her breasts strain against the thin material, and I notice Cassian deliberately averting his gaze.Charlie walks directly to Dom and plants a kiss on his lips that's anything but familial. Her tongue visibly slides against his, her hand gripping his hair as she moans into his mouth. My stomach churns at the display."Did I miss anything fun, brother?" Charlie asks when she finally pulls away, a string of saliva still connecting their lips. Her eyes gleam with perverse enjoyment as she catches my horrified expression."Brother?" The word escapes my lips before I can stop it.Charlie's la

Cassian's POVThe hot water pounded against my skin, washing away the sweat from my workout but doing nothing for the tension knotting my shoulders. Viktor was awake. The relief I felt was so overwhelming I had to brace myself against the shower wall for a moment. And Aria—Christ, the way she looked at me when she told me. There was something there, beneath the anger. A crack in her armor that gave me hope, even if I didn't deserve it.I turned off the water and stepped out, reaching for a towel when a strange smell hit me. My vision blurred instantly, and alarm bells screamed in my head. Gas. Someone had pumped gas into the bathroom."Aria!" I shouted, lunging for the door. My legs gave out before I could reach it, my body betraying me as consciousness slipped away. The last thought that raced through my mind was her name, a prayer and a curse rolled into one.*****The cold metal chains bite into my wrists, but the pain is nothing compared to the fury boiling inside me.
