INTERLUDE: ONE MONTH LATER

The black Maserati rolled through the towering gates of the Romano estate in Toronto, the engine purring low like a satisfied predator returning from the hunt.

Gravel crunched beneath the tires as the villa came into view. Ivy danced lazily up the sides of the balcony rails, fluttering in the soft spring breeze.

“Home sweet home,” Alina mumbled, leaning her head gently against the window, eyes half-lidded with exhaustion and peace.

Her breath fogged faintly against the glass, her gaze tracing the curves of the estate like it was the first time.

But it wasn’t.

She’d eventually grown into it, grown to love the life she once thought would destroy her.

  • The Mafia Devil’s Contractual Wife    51. Acceptance

~ALINA’S POV~ I stood frozen, my breath caught somewhere between my lungs and my heart, which was pounding so hard I thought it might burst free. Did he really just say it? “I love you.” His voice was low, steady, but laced with a kind of fierce honesty I never expected. Valentino Romano, the Devil of Milan himself, had just confessed his love to me. My mind scrambled, trying to make sense of the impossible. How? Why? I didn’t move at first. I just stood there, cradled in his arms, frozen in time, feeling his breath warm against my hair, his voice echoing in my chest like thunder still rolling through my bones. I slowly pulled back, just enough to look up at him, my breath catching in my throat. His arms remained firm around me, but his eyes—God, his eyes—were searching mine with a softness I had never seen there before. A swirl of happiness and fear crashed inside me, leaving me breathless, dizzy, vulnerable. My lips parted, but nothing came out. I was tre

~VALENTINO’S POV~ “Moglie mia… you scared me.” My voice was low, breathless, almost hoarse, as I wrapped my arms around her tighter than I should have. My nose buried into the crook of her neck, inhaling the soft scent of her vanilla and jasmine perfume, my heart still hammering against my ribs like it was trying to tear through me. God. I didn’t even realize I was trembling until she shifted slightly against me. Just a few minutes ago, I had been tearing through the streets of Toronto like a madman, the city lights flashing like warning signs I couldn’t read fast enough. My knuckles had turned white from how hard I was gripping the steering wheel, my head spinning with worst-case scenarios. Alina… with another man. Alina… taken. Alina… gone. God, the things I imagined; my enemies dragging her away, using her to hurt me, the only softness I have in this brutal world ripped from my hands. And then one of the boys had called. “She’s at Queens Road, Boss. Spotte

~Alina’s POV~ The silence in the car was suffocating. Even after we lost the black SUV with that sharp right turn, weaving through side streets until its shadow finally disappeared, Guilia and I exhaled as if we had been holding our breaths underwater. But now, as the city blurred past the windows, a different tension settled in. “Which road are you passing?” Guilia asked, narrowing her eyes. “Does this road lead back home?” I didn’t answer. Not because I didn’t hear her. But because I didn’t know how to explain. I didn’t know how to explain that I’m visiting the slum my husband grew up in. In the depth of my mind, beneath the layers of everything I should be doing, there was only one thought. Valentino grew up on this street. Queens Road. A place he mentioned so offhandedly, as if it was nothing. As if it wasn’t the root of everything he became. The monster. The devil of Milan. I needed to see it. “I’m asking you, Alina. Where are we going?” “We’ll get

~Valentino’s POV~ The first thing that came into my mind as I woke up was her. My eyes cracked open slightly, heavy with sleep, and my hand instinctively reached out to her side, but instead, I was greeted by empty, cold sheets. My brow furrowed, the sleep vanishing in an instant. “Moglie?” I muttered, my voice still rough, thick with sleep. No answer. A dull ache throbbed in my arm as I pushed myself up, the stitches pulling, a burning reminder of the shitstorm we’d just survived. I gritted my teeth, forcing myself upright, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. I grabbed a shirt from the closet, slipping it carefully over my shoulders. The fabric dragged against the gauze on my arm, making me wince. I paired it with black shorts and slides, then headed out of the room. Descending the grand staircase, my footsteps echoed sharply against the marble, slicing through the suffocating quiet. Two guards stood stationed at the bottom, straightening immediately wh

~Alina’s POV~ Guilia and I had somehow managed to leave the house unnoticed. Valentino had fallen asleep after breakfast, probably dulled by painkillers for his injury. Dante and Rocco were preoccupied with some business call that sounded more like thinly veiled threats than actual negotiations. Bianca? Don’t even know where she is, and frankly, I don’t care. It was the perfect opportunity. Guilia and I took one of the cars and drove out of the estate. The air inside the car was thick with silence. Guilia sat beside me, legs and arms crossed, sunglasses on, staring out the window like she wanted to melt into it. “You’ve been awfully quiet this morning,” I said, flicking a glance at her. “Did something happen last night?” “Nothing happened.” Her tone was clipped, defensive. “Really? Because you look like someone who wants to murder someone and cry at the same time.” “Maybe I just need some peace and quiet.” “Oh. Suddenly you’re a monk.” I smiled, trying to

  • The Mafia Devil’s Contractual Wife    46. The Little Boy Inside The Don

~ALINA’S POV~ My breath caught. Valentino Romano. The most feared man in Italy… grew up as a beggar? I forced the food in my mouth down my throat as I listened to him. For a moment, the room felt too quiet, too heavy. I stared at him, at the man everyone feared. But all I saw now was the lost boy hiding behind the mask. His face was blank, but the pain sat there, deep in his eyes, like old scars that never truly healed. He smiled bitterly, stabbing his food absently. “That’s all I was. For as long as I can remember.” “I don’t know if they’re dead or alive somewhere, probably forgotten me. Or maybe they never wanted me to begin with,” he continued quietly. “I just knew as far back as I can remember… I was alone.” My heart twisted painfully. Even a man like him—untouchable, feared, powerful—had shadows clinging to him. He wasn’t invincible after all. He was human, bruised and battered by a past no one ever dared to ask about. I couldn’t help but wonde

~Alina’s POV~ I woke up in his arms. The golden morning light spilled through the open curtains, bathing Valentino’s face in soft warmth. For a man who terrified everyone, he looked heartbreakingly peaceful in sleep. His lashes brushed his cheeks, his lips slightly parted as he breathed deeply, like the world outside didn’t exist. I brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead, smiling to myself. Last night… It wasn’t just sex. It was… something else entirely. Intense, raw and terrifyingly addictive. I sighed quietly. How did this man crawl under my skin so fast? Am I falling for him? Is he falling for me? Should I stop resisting and just… let go? For once, stop questioning and just live in the moment? I pressed a soft kiss to his temple and carefully slipped out of bed, remembering the promise I made him last night. I remembered I promised to make him spaghetti. He teased me last night. And now, I wanted to keep my promise. As I padded downstairs, the ma

~Guilia’s POV~ Dante’s grip was iron as he threw me onto the bed, his golden eyes burning with something dark. Before I could scramble away, his hand wrapped around my throat again, pinning me down as his other hand ripped the towel from my body, leaving me completely bare beneath him. His hand unwrapped from my throat and pinned my wrists above my head, his grip firm and unyielding. “You want to play with fire, puttana?” His voice was a rough growl, sending a violent shiver down my spine. “Then you’ll learn what it means to burn.” Before I could retort, his fingers tangled in my hair, yanking my head back. A sharp cry tore from my lips, but the pain only made my core throb harder. He chuckled low, mocking, as if he could hear the filthy way my body reacted to him. “Pathetic,” he murmured, dragging his lips along the shell of my ear. “You’re dripping for me already, aren’t you?” I gritted my teeth, refusing to answer, but he didn’t need one. His hand slid between my thighs, f
