Adrian hated waiting.

Waiting meant uncertainty and uncertainty meant someone else had control, and Adrian Marcelli had spent his entire life making sure that never happened.

But as he sat in the back of his car outside Emily Pascarelli’s gallery, he realized something that annoyed him more than the threat itself.

He wasn’t waiting for his enemies.

He was waiting for Ethan to tell him who was watching her.

The city moved around him. People walked past without knowing who sat inside. Cars passed. Lights changed. Everything looked normal but Adrian knew better because normal was usually just the moment before something went wrong.

His phone rang. Ethan.

Adrian answered immediately. “Tell me.”

A pause. “We checked the area around the gallery.”

“And?”

“Nothing obvious.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Nothing obvious is not the same as nothing.”

“I know.”

“Then find them.”

Another pause and then Ethan’s voice changed. “Adrian.”

The tone made him look up from the window. “What?”

“You need to be careful.”

Adrian looked toward the gallery where Emily was still inside, moving between paintings and paperwork like she had no idea someone might be watching her. “I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Adrian went quiet because Ethan rarely challenged him.

“The old Adrian would already have three men around her, another five watching the streets, and a list of everyone who looked in her direction,” Ethan said.

“That sounds efficient.”

“That sounds like you turning her into a prisoner.”

Adrian didn’t answer because Ethan was right and he hated that. For five years he had protected his family by controlling every possible outcome, every person, every threat, every weakness. But Emily Pascarelli was the first person who made him question whether protection and control were the same thing, and he had no idea which answer bothered him more.

“I’ll handle it,” Adrian said and ended the call before Ethan could reply.

Emily knew something was wrong the moment she walked into the gallery the next morning.

Not because anything was different.

Because everything was exactly the same.

The same paintings, the same music, the same smell of coffee, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed and she hated that Adrian had done that to her. One conversation, one visit, and suddenly she was looking over her shoulder.

“Okay.”

Clara’s voice made her turn. “What?”

Clara crossed her arms. “That face.”

Emily frowned. “What face?”

“The face you make when you’re pretending you’re not thinking about something.”

“I’m working.”

“You’re staring at a painting that’s been hanging there for two months.”

Emily looked away and unfortunately Clara noticed. Of course she noticed.

“You like him.”

Emily almost dropped the papers in her hand. “What?”

“The Marcelli heir.”

“No.”

“That was a very fast answer.”

“Because it’s ridiculous.”

Clara walked closer and lowered her voice. “Emily, I’m not saying you’re in love with him. I’m saying you’re interested.”

Emily opened her mouth then closed it because that was worse. Interest was exactly the problem.

“He’s dangerous,” Clara said.

“I know.”

“He’s connected to everything you ran away from.”

“I know.”

“And yet?”

Emily looked at the painting in front of her. “He’s not what I expected.”

Clara studied her. “That’s what worries me.”

Emily sighed. “He came to the gallery last night.”

Clara’s eyes widened. “What?”

“He wanted to talk.”

“Emily.”

“He didn’t threaten me.”

“That’s your standard now? He didn’t threaten you?”

Emily ignored that. “He looked at the paintings. He asked why I chose them. Like he actually wanted to know.”

For a moment neither of them spoke. Then Clara sighed. “That man is going to be a problem.”

Emily looked toward the window. The strange thing was, she already knew.

Adrian arrived at the gallery twenty minutes later and this time he came alone. No guards, no announcement, no reason for Emily to know he was there until the bell above the door rang.

She looked up and immediately sighed. “Do you make a habit of appearing where people least expect you?”

Adrian closed the door behind him. “Apparently.”

Emily stared because that was almost a joke. Almost. “You’re improving.”

“At what?”

“Talking like a normal person.”

His expression remained serious. “I wasn’t aware that was a skill.”

Emily shook her head. “You really are impossible.”

Adrian looked around the gallery. “Your gallery is doing well.”

Emily raised an eyebrow. “That sounded almost like a compliment.”

“It was an observation.”

“Of course it was.”

He ignored that and stepped closer to the counter. “I need to ask you something.”

Her expression changed slightly because there it was, the reason he was here. “About my family?”

“Yes.”

Emily stepped away from the counter. “Then ask.”

Adrian studied her. “You said you left your family because you disagreed with them.”

“Yes.”

“How much did you know about their business?”

The question irritated her immediately. “Still investigating me?”

“No.”

“Because it feels like it.”

Adrian went quiet and usually people apologized when he was silent, but Emily just looked annoyed.

“I’m not my father, Adrian.”

“I know.”

The answer came so quickly that she stopped. “You do?”

“Yes.”

That surprised her and Adrian looked away for a second. “I know you left. I know you built this without them.”

“Then why keep asking?”

“Because leaving doesn’t mean you know nothing.”

Emily crossed her arms. “And what exactly are you trying to find?”

The truth. That was the answer, but the file on his desk didn’t give it to him.

Instead he said, “Someone is watching you.”

The room went still. “What?”

“Someone was outside your gallery last night asking questions.”

She looked toward the window. “Who?”

“I don’t know yet.”

That answer bothered him and she noticed. “You don’t know?”

“No.”

For the first time Emily saw something she never expected. Adrian Marcelli didn’t like not having answers.

“You’re worried.”

His eyes moved to hers. “I’m cautious.”

“That wasn’t what I said.”

Silence stretched and Emily smiled slightly. “You really hate when people notice things about you.”

Adrian didn’t respond because she was right and he hated that too.

A few minutes later Emily reached for a painting frame that had slipped crooked and the edge caught her finger. She pulled back quickly. “It’s nothing.”

But Adrian had already moved. He took her hand before he could think and the reaction was immediate. Not calculated, not controlled, just instinct.

Emily went quiet. So did Adrian. For a second neither of them moved. His hand was careful, gentle, completely different from the man everyone described.

“You’re bleeding,” he said.

“It’s a small cut.”

“Still.”

She looked at him. “Do you realize how strange this is?”

“What?”

“The man everyone is afraid of worrying about a tiny cut.”

Adrian released her hand immediately, almost like he was angry at himself for touching her, and his expression closed off again. “Don’t misunderstand.”

Emily smiled. “There it is.”

“What?”

“The part where you pretend you don’t care.”

Adrian looked at her and for once he didn’t have an answer because he wasn’t sure what he was pretending anymore.

That evening Adrian was in his office reading the latest report. The person following Emily still hadn’t been identified.

His phone rang. Ethan.

Adrian answered. “What did you find?”

A pause that was too long. “The person watching Emily wasn’t connected to the Pascarellis.”

Adrian’s expression hardened. “Then who?”

Silence again. “Ethan.”

Finally Ethan spoke. “We traced the vehicle. It belongs to someone who has access to Marcelli information.”

The room went cold because that changed everything. Someone inside his own world was watching Emily. Someone knew enough about the Marcelli family to hide, and someone knew enough about the Pascarelli history to know she mattered.

“Find out who.”

“I’m already trying.”

Adrian ended the call and looked at the city outside his window. For five years he had searched for the person who destroyed his family and he never considered that the answer might be standing beside him.

Now the woman connected to his greatest enemy had become the person he needed to protect most.

The problem was, Adrian Marcelli had spent his entire life knowing how to fight enemies.

He had never learned what to do when the danger came from someone he trusted.

Emily was locking the gallery when she felt it.

That prickle on the back of her neck like someone was watching.

She looked across the street.

A car was parked there. Dark windows. Engine running.

And in the passenger seat, a man lifted his phone and took a picture.

Of her.

Of the gallery.

Of the moment Adrian’s car had pulled away ten minutes ago.

*EMILY*I woke up smiling. That was problem number one. Problem number two was that I knew exactly why. I reached for my phone before I was even fully awake, squinting at the light. One message. *Adrian: Good morning, girlfriend.* I stared at it. Then smiled so hard my face hurt. I typed back. *Emily: That sounds strange.* His reply came almost immediately. *Adrian: I'm getting used to it.* *Emily: You better.* Three dots appeared. *Adrian: Did you sleep well?* I laughed quietly into my pillow. *Emily: Are you eighty years old?* *Adrian: Answer the question.* *Emily: Yes. You?* There was a pause. *Adrian: Better than usual.* I stared at that. My chest did something stupid and warm. Then another message came through. *Adrian: I'm outside.* I sat straight up. The blanket fell off my lap. *Emily: Outside where?* *Adrian: Your gallery.* I glanced at the clock. 8:47. *Emily: It's not even nine.* *Adrian: I know.* *Emily: Why are

  • The Mafia Heir's First Love   Chapter 21 : Finally

*EMILY*I spent the entire morning lying to myself. I wasn’t nervous. I was fine. It was just Adrian. The lie didn’t hold. I changed my shirt twice before 9am. A blouse, then a sweater, then back to the blouse because the sweater made me look like I was trying too hard. Which I was. I rearranged three paintings on the gallery wall. Then rearranged them again. I told myself I was being ridiculous. Except it wasn’t just Adrian anymore. That was the problem. The man who’d walked into my gallery weeks ago had looked like he owned the building, the block, and probably the city. Sharp suit. Colder eyes. The kind of man who didn’t ask, he decided. This Adrian drank terrible coffee because I’d once said I liked it. This Adrian had shown up to my exhibition in dress shoes and carried canvases without complaining. This Adrian remembered I took two sugars and never asked why. This Adrian had pulled out a sketchbook from when he was sixteen and let me see the boy who d

*EMILY* I woke up smiling and that was the first red flag. I stared at the ceiling, letting it sink in. Adrian. The gallery. The couch. His hand on my back like he was afraid I’d vanish if he let go. The way he’d whispered my name at 1am like it was the only word he knew. I groaned and pulled the blanket over my face. “Oh God.” I was still smiling under the blanket. Stupid. I grabbed my phone. 7:42am. No notifications. No text. No "good morning". No "did you get home okay". Nothing. Right. Because we’re adults. Because we said this wasn’t going to be weird. Because he’s Adrian Marcelli and he doesn’t do good morning texts. I tossed the phone onto the pillow and got up. Made coffee. Checked email. Rearranged three books. Checked my phone again. Still nothing. “Pathetic,” I muttered to the empty apartment. Clara was the first person at the gallery. She took one look at me and dropped her bag. “You’re early and you’re glowing. What happened.” “Nothing

*EMILY* I knew something was different before Adrian even texted. It was 8am and I was reorganizing the same shelf of prints for the third time because my brain wouldn’t shut up. Every time my phone buzzed I checked it. When it was just Clara asking about inventory I felt stupid for being disappointed. Then at 2:17 his name popped up. *Adrian: Are you working tonight?* I stared at it until the screen went dark. Not "foundation meeting". Not "can you review the proposal". Just that. *Emily: Why?* *Adrian: I want to see you.* No reason. No excuse. The last time a man said that to me I ended up crying in a bathroom at 3am. I set my phone face down. Clara looked up from the register. “Who’s making you do that?” “Do what?” “That face. Like you just got caught doing something.” “Nothing.” “Sure.” She rang up a customer and the second they left she leaned on the counter. “It’s him, isn’t it.” I didn’t answer. “You’re smiling,” she said. “When was the last time y

The address he sent wasn’t the foundation. It was a coffee shop in West Village. The kind with chipped mugs and plants in the windows. Not Marcelli.I stood on the sidewalk with my tote bag and checked my phone again. Foundation meeting. 2PM. That’s what the email said yesterday. The door opened and Adrian stepped out. No suit. Black jeans, black sweater, sunglasses pushed up into his hair. He looked younger. Less like a headline.“You’re early,” he said. “You’re not at the office.”He smiled. Just a little. “There is no office today.”I frowned. “What do you mean?”“I mean I lied.” He shoved his hands in his pockets. “There’s no meeting. No foundation thing. No exhibition.” A pause. “I just wanted to see you.”That stopped me. Adrian Marcelli didn’t do things without an excuse. Security. Business. A photo op. There was always a reason I could point to when people asked why I was with him. This was the first time there wasn’t one.“Okay,” I said slowly. “So what do we do

  • The Mafia Heir's First Love   Chapter 17: Babysitting

*LEO* By eleven in the morning I’d already been told no three times. Don’t leave the building alone. Don’t take the car without telling Adrian. And don’t, under any circumstances, make Rowan regret agreeing to babysit me today. I was sitting across from him in Adrian’s office, watching him drink Adrian’s coffee out of Adrian’s mug like he paid rent here. “You’re actually doing this,” I said. “Yes.” “It’s Saturday.” “Yes.” “You have a life.” “No.” I frowned. “That’s depressing.” Rowan lifted the mug. “I have a job.” “That’s not a life, that’s a sentence.” “You’re one to talk. You’re sitting in your brother’s office at eleven on a Saturday because you have nothing better to do.” I looked around. “I’m sitting in my brother’s office drinking his coffee.” “You invited me.” “I didn’t think you’d say yes.” Rowan set the mug down. “You said, and I quote, ‘Come downstairs if you want to watch me make terrible decisions.’” “I was joking.” “I wasn’t.
