Adrian had spent the last five years learning one thing.

Never hesitate.

Hesitation was how people made mistakes, how enemies found weaknesses, how men who had power lost it.

But when Ethan said Emily Pascarelli’s name, Adrian had hesitated.

And he hated that.

The office was silent after the call ended. Ethan was still on the other end of the line.

“Adrian?”

He didn’t answer immediately because the city stretched beneath the glass windows, hundreds of lights moving like nothing in the world had changed.

But something had.

“What did you find?” Adrian finally asked.

Ethan was quiet for a moment. “Not over the phone.”

Adrian’s expression hardened. “You know I don’t like surprises.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t create one.”

Another pause. “Come back to the office.”

The call ended and Adrian stared at the phone in his hand.

Five years ago he had promised himself he would never let the Pascarelli name surprise him again, and yet Emily had done exactly that. Not because she threatened him, but because she didn’t. She had looked him in the eyes, challenged him, and walked away like he was just a man. Not the Marcelli heir. Not the person everyone else feared. Just Adrian.

And that bothered him more than any enemy ever had.

Emily had spent the morning convincing herself she was not thinking about Adrian Marcelli.

She failed.

She was organizing invoices at the gallery when she caught herself staring at the same page for the third time and the numbers blurred together.

She hated that she remembered everything about the meeting. The way Adrian listened, the way he didn't interrupt, the way he looked almost confused whenever she challenged him.

That was the strangest part. Everyone described Adrian Marcelli like he was impossible to reach, cold, dangerous, unemotional. But yesterday, for a few seconds, she had seen something different. A person who didn't know what to do when someone refused to be afraid of him.

Her phone buzzed and she immediately looked at it.

Clara.

Clara: Are you alive?

Emily smiled despite herself.

Emily: Unfortunately.

The reply came fast.

Clara: I came by your apartment last night to drop off that book and you weren’t there. Texted you, no answer.

Emily’s stomach dropped because she hadn’t even realized Clara came by.

Emily: Sorry, I had work to do.

Clara: At 10pm? On a Tuesday? Where did you go, Em

Emily hesitated with her fingers over the keyboard because lying felt wrong but telling the truth felt worse.

Emily: I had a meeting.

Clara: With who

Emily: Adrian Marcelli.

The three dots appeared and disappeared twice before Clara answered.

Clara: You’re joking.

Emily: I’m not.

Clara: You went to meet him. Alone. After I literally said text me if he contacts you.

Emily: I know, I’m sorry.

Clara: How did you even know where to go

Emily: He told me. Marconi’s. Private room.

Clara: And you went.

Emily: I wanted answers, Clara.

Clara: Did you get them

Emily stared at the screen and thought about the way Adrian said “two warehouses and one life” like it still kept him up at night.

Emily: Sort of.

Clara: Sort of isn’t good enough. Please tell me you’re not doing this again.

Emily: I’m not.

She put her phone down before Clara could reply again, because even she didn’t believe it.

Three seconds later another text came in.

Clara: How was the meeting with the Marcelli heir? The man everyone in this city is afraid of?

Emily rolled her eyes.

Emily: He wasn't terrifying.

Clara: You are the only person on earth who would say that.

Emily put her phone down because she wanted to argue but couldn’t, because maybe Clara was right.

Adrian returned to the office twenty minutes later and Ethan was waiting. He looked serious and that alone made Adrian pay attention.

“What did you find?”

Ethan placed a folder on the desk. Not thick, not dramatic, just a folder, and Adrian hated that because small things were usually the most dangerous.

“You need to understand something before you open it,” Ethan said.

Adrian looked at him. “I don't like when people tell me how to approach information.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you doing it?”

“Because whatever is inside that folder changes things.”

The room went quiet and Adrian opened it. The first page wasn't a photograph, it was a report, and his eyes moved across the words then stopped.

Five years ago. Pascarelli estate. A conversation. A name. Emily’s.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Where did you get this?”

“From someone who worked inside the Pascarelli house.”

“Someone trustworthy?”

“As trustworthy as anyone who spent years around your enemies can be.”

Adrian continued reading and the more he read, the quieter he became because the file didn’t prove Emily was guilty.

It didn’t prove she was innocent either.

And somehow that bothered him more.

Because if she was involved, then she was better at hiding it than anyone he’d met.

And if she wasn’t, then she had been collateral damage in a war she never asked for.

Adrian closed the folder. “Where is the source now?”

Ethan’s face changed. “Gone. He disappeared two hours ago.”

Adrian went still. “You think someone got to him first.”

“I think someone doesn’t want us knowing what Emily knows.”

The words stayed in the room.

For years Adrian had seen the Pascarelli name and thought enemy.

Now he was looking at a woman who might be a target, and he didn’t know which possibility was more dangerous.

"Is she being watched?"

"Not that we can see," Ethan said. "But if someone is cleaning up loose ends, she could be next."

Adrian stood. "I'm going to the gallery."

Ethan frowned. "Now? We should secure the source first—"

"If someone is watching her, they’ll see me there too," Adrian cut in. "And I need to know if she’s lying before anyone else gets to her."

That wasn’t the whole truth.

The other part was that he needed to see her again to know which version of her was real.

Emily was closing the gallery at 8:30 when the door opened and she looked up and froze.

Adrian Marcelli stood there.

No announcement, no guards walking in first, just him.

She glanced behind him. "Should I be worried?"

His eyebrow lifted slightly. "Is that your first question?"

"No. My first question was why are you here."

A faint expression crossed his face, not quite a smile but closer than she had seen before. "I needed to talk."

Emily crossed her arms. "That sentence usually means trouble when someone like you says it."

"Someone like me?"

"You know exactly what I mean."

Adrian looked around the gallery instead of answering. The walls were covered with paintings, not expensive ones, not the kind rich people bought just to show they could afford them. They were emotional, personal, and he noticed that immediately.

"You chose these?"

Emily followed his gaze. "Yes."

"Why?"

She frowned. "Because I like them."

That answer seemed to surprise him. "You don't choose based on value?"

"No."

"Most people do."

"Most people are boring."

Adrian looked at her and for some reason that answer almost made him smile. Almost. "You always talk like this?"

"Like what?"

"Like you aren't speaking to someone dangerous."

Emily tilted her head. "Are you always this determined to remind people you're dangerous?"

The question caught him because he didn't know, nobody ever questioned it, nobody ever asked if he enjoyed being feared, they simply accepted it.

Emily walked toward another painting. "You know what I think?"

Adrian watched her. "What?"

"I think everyone has decided who you are before they actually meet you."

"And what did you decide?"

Emily looked back at him. "I haven't decided yet."

For some reason that answer mattered more than it should have.

"Why are you really here?" Emily asked.

Adrian was quiet because the truth was complicated. He had come because someone disappeared, because the file raised more questions, because if someone was watching her he needed to know.

And because he wanted to see if the woman who wasn’t afraid of him was hiding something.

"I wanted to see if you were lying," he said finally.

Emily blinked then laughed once, not loudly, just genuinely. "Wow."

Adrian frowned. "What?"

"That might be the most honest insult I've ever received."

He didn't know what to say and that annoyed him. Emily smiled slightly. "You really don't know how normal conversations work, do you?"

"No."

The answer came so quickly that she stopped because she expected arrogance, not honesty.

For a moment neither of them spoke, then Adrian's phone rang. He looked at the screen. Ethan.

Adrian answered. "What?"

Ethan's voice was low. "Adrian, we have a problem."

Adrian's expression changed. "What happened?"

"Someone was outside the gallery ten minutes ago. Asking about you."

Adrian went still and Emily noticed. "Is everything okay?"

He looked at her and for the first time she saw something different in his eyes, not anger, not control, but concern. "I have to go."

Emily watched him head toward the door, then he stopped. "Emily."

She looked up. "Yes?"

Adrian hesitated, a small thing, but Emily noticed. "Lock the gallery early tonight."

She frowned. "Why?"

His eyes met hers. "Because I asked you to."

She almost smiled. "There it is."

"What?"

"The ordering people around."

For the first time Adrian actually smiled, small, almost invisible, but real. "Goodnight, Emily."

Then he left.

Emily watched his car disappear outside the gallery.

She didn’t know that across the street, someone had been watching her the entire time.

And they had just seen Adrian Marcelli smile.

*EMILY*I woke up smiling. That was problem number one. Problem number two was that I knew exactly why. I reached for my phone before I was even fully awake, squinting at the light. One message. *Adrian: Good morning, girlfriend.* I stared at it. Then smiled so hard my face hurt. I typed back. *Emily: That sounds strange.* His reply came almost immediately. *Adrian: I'm getting used to it.* *Emily: You better.* Three dots appeared. *Adrian: Did you sleep well?* I laughed quietly into my pillow. *Emily: Are you eighty years old?* *Adrian: Answer the question.* *Emily: Yes. You?* There was a pause. *Adrian: Better than usual.* I stared at that. My chest did something stupid and warm. Then another message came through. *Adrian: I'm outside.* I sat straight up. The blanket fell off my lap. *Emily: Outside where?* *Adrian: Your gallery.* I glanced at the clock. 8:47. *Emily: It's not even nine.* *Adrian: I know.* *Emily: Why are

  • The Mafia Heir's First Love   Chapter 21 : Finally

*EMILY*I spent the entire morning lying to myself. I wasn’t nervous. I was fine. It was just Adrian. The lie didn’t hold. I changed my shirt twice before 9am. A blouse, then a sweater, then back to the blouse because the sweater made me look like I was trying too hard. Which I was. I rearranged three paintings on the gallery wall. Then rearranged them again. I told myself I was being ridiculous. Except it wasn’t just Adrian anymore. That was the problem. The man who’d walked into my gallery weeks ago had looked like he owned the building, the block, and probably the city. Sharp suit. Colder eyes. The kind of man who didn’t ask, he decided. This Adrian drank terrible coffee because I’d once said I liked it. This Adrian had shown up to my exhibition in dress shoes and carried canvases without complaining. This Adrian remembered I took two sugars and never asked why. This Adrian had pulled out a sketchbook from when he was sixteen and let me see the boy who d

*EMILY* I woke up smiling and that was the first red flag. I stared at the ceiling, letting it sink in. Adrian. The gallery. The couch. His hand on my back like he was afraid I’d vanish if he let go. The way he’d whispered my name at 1am like it was the only word he knew. I groaned and pulled the blanket over my face. “Oh God.” I was still smiling under the blanket. Stupid. I grabbed my phone. 7:42am. No notifications. No text. No "good morning". No "did you get home okay". Nothing. Right. Because we’re adults. Because we said this wasn’t going to be weird. Because he’s Adrian Marcelli and he doesn’t do good morning texts. I tossed the phone onto the pillow and got up. Made coffee. Checked email. Rearranged three books. Checked my phone again. Still nothing. “Pathetic,” I muttered to the empty apartment. Clara was the first person at the gallery. She took one look at me and dropped her bag. “You’re early and you’re glowing. What happened.” “Nothing

*EMILY* I knew something was different before Adrian even texted. It was 8am and I was reorganizing the same shelf of prints for the third time because my brain wouldn’t shut up. Every time my phone buzzed I checked it. When it was just Clara asking about inventory I felt stupid for being disappointed. Then at 2:17 his name popped up. *Adrian: Are you working tonight?* I stared at it until the screen went dark. Not "foundation meeting". Not "can you review the proposal". Just that. *Emily: Why?* *Adrian: I want to see you.* No reason. No excuse. The last time a man said that to me I ended up crying in a bathroom at 3am. I set my phone face down. Clara looked up from the register. “Who’s making you do that?” “Do what?” “That face. Like you just got caught doing something.” “Nothing.” “Sure.” She rang up a customer and the second they left she leaned on the counter. “It’s him, isn’t it.” I didn’t answer. “You’re smiling,” she said. “When was the last time y

The address he sent wasn’t the foundation. It was a coffee shop in West Village. The kind with chipped mugs and plants in the windows. Not Marcelli.I stood on the sidewalk with my tote bag and checked my phone again. Foundation meeting. 2PM. That’s what the email said yesterday. The door opened and Adrian stepped out. No suit. Black jeans, black sweater, sunglasses pushed up into his hair. He looked younger. Less like a headline.“You’re early,” he said. “You’re not at the office.”He smiled. Just a little. “There is no office today.”I frowned. “What do you mean?”“I mean I lied.” He shoved his hands in his pockets. “There’s no meeting. No foundation thing. No exhibition.” A pause. “I just wanted to see you.”That stopped me. Adrian Marcelli didn’t do things without an excuse. Security. Business. A photo op. There was always a reason I could point to when people asked why I was with him. This was the first time there wasn’t one.“Okay,” I said slowly. “So what do we do

  • The Mafia Heir's First Love   Chapter 17: Babysitting

*LEO* By eleven in the morning I’d already been told no three times. Don’t leave the building alone. Don’t take the car without telling Adrian. And don’t, under any circumstances, make Rowan regret agreeing to babysit me today. I was sitting across from him in Adrian’s office, watching him drink Adrian’s coffee out of Adrian’s mug like he paid rent here. “You’re actually doing this,” I said. “Yes.” “It’s Saturday.” “Yes.” “You have a life.” “No.” I frowned. “That’s depressing.” Rowan lifted the mug. “I have a job.” “That’s not a life, that’s a sentence.” “You’re one to talk. You’re sitting in your brother’s office at eleven on a Saturday because you have nothing better to do.” I looked around. “I’m sitting in my brother’s office drinking his coffee.” “You invited me.” “I didn’t think you’d say yes.” Rowan set the mug down. “You said, and I quote, ‘Come downstairs if you want to watch me make terrible decisions.’” “I was joking.” “I wasn’t.
