The Devil’s Deal

The hotel room smelled like mold and regret.

I sat on the edge of the sagging bed, watching Dante sleep. He had passed out shortly after our kiss, the blood loss finally catching up with him. I had managed to clean and bandage his wound with the first aid kit from the bathroom, a pathetic little thing with expired antiseptic and bandages that barely stuck.

He looked younger in sleep. Less like a Mafia king and more like a man who had been fighting his entire life and was finally allowed to rest. The scar through his eyebrow seemed more pronounced in the dim light, a permanent reminder of the violence that had shaped him.

I should have been terrified. I was trapped in a cheap hotel room with a wounded crime lord, hunted by his psychopathic aunt and her army of killers, with nothing but a flash drive and my wits to protect me. My father was dead. My mother was probably worried sick. My entire life had been upended in the span of forty-eight hours.

And yet, I felt more alive than I had in years.

Dante stirred, his eyes fluttering open. For a moment, he looked disoriented, his hand reaching for a weapon that wasn't there. Then his gaze found me, and something in his expression softened.

"You're still here," he said, his voice rough.

"Where else would I be?"

"Anywhere. You could have taken the evidence and run. Left me to die."

"I considered it."

His lips twitched. "Liar."

"Okay, maybe not." I stood and walked to the tiny window, peering through the grimy curtains at the street below. "But I thought about it. For about three seconds."

"That's longer than most people would give me."

I turned to face him, crossing my arms. "We need to talk about the Marchettis."

Dante pushed himself up, wincing as the movement pulled at his wound. "We do."

"Tell me about them. The truth, not the sanitized version."

He was quiet for a moment, his gray eyes studying me. Then he nodded. "The Marchetti family has been in power for over a century. They're old money, old blood, old grudges. Their current leader is Lorenzo Marchetti. He's seventy-three, ruthless, and he hates Isabella with a passion that borders on obsession."

"Why?"

"Isabella killed his son." Dante's voice was flat. "Twenty years ago. Lorenzo's son was engaged to a woman Isabella wanted for Victor. Isabella arranged an accident. The son died. The woman married Victor. Lorenzo has been waiting for revenge ever since."

"Jesus."

"Lorenzo is not a good man. None of us are. But he's a man of his word. If we make a deal with him, he'll honor it. As long as we give him what he wants."

"What does he want?"

"Isabella's head on a platter." Dante swung his legs over the side of the bed, testing his strength. "And the destruction of everything she's built. He'll help us because it serves his purposes. But he'll also demand a price."

"What kind of price?"

Dante met my eyes. "He'll want something valuable. Something that ensures our loyalty. Usually, that means a marriage."

My stomach dropped. "A marriage?"

"Not ours. We're already married. But he might want a future alliance. A promise that our children will marry his grandchildren. Something that binds our families together for generations."

"That's medieval."

"That's the Mafia." Dante stood, swaying slightly, then steadied himself. "I won't agree to that. I won't promise our children to anyone. But I need you to understand what we're walking into."

"I understand." I walked to him, stopping a few inches away. "But if it comes down to it, if the only way to stop Isabella is to make that promise, we'll find another way. We always do."

Dante looked down at me, and for a moment, the mask slipped. I saw the exhaustion, the fear, the desperate hope that I was right.

"You make me believe that," he said quietly. "You make me believe we can actually win this."

"We can. We will."

He reached up and touched my face, his fingers tracing the line of my jaw. "I don't deserve you."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

"I'm not some reward for good behavior, Dante. I'm not here to save you or redeem you. I'm here because I choose to be. Because despite everything, despite who you are and what you've done, I see something in you worth fighting for."

His eyes searched mine. "What do you see?"

"A man who lost everything and built an empire from the ashes. A man who could have become a monster but chose to protect instead of destroy. A man who is terrified of being vulnerable but keeps letting me in anyway."

"Chloe-"

"I'm not finished." I pressed my fingers to his lips, silencing him. "I see a man who married me for revenge and ended up falling in love with me instead. And I see a man who is too stubborn and too proud to admit it."

Dante stared at me, his expression unreadable. Then he did something that surprised me. He laughed. A real laugh, warm and unexpected, that crinkled the corners of his eyes and made him look almost boyish.

"You are impossible," he said.

"I know."

"I was going to say insufferable."

"That too."

He kissed me then, soft and slow, a kiss that said more than words ever could. When he pulled back, his eyes were serious again.

"We leave for the Marchetti estate tonight. It's a three hour drive. We'll arrive by dawn."

"And if Lorenzo refuses to help us?"

"Then we're on our own." Dante's jaw tightened. "But he won't refuse. He's been waiting for this opportunity for twenty years. We're giving him the chance to finally get his revenge."

"And what about us? What happens after Isabella is defeated?"

Dante was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "I don't know. I never planned for an after. I never thought I would survive long enough to have one."

"You have one now. With me."

"With you," he repeated, as if testing the words. "That's a terrifying thought."

"Why?"

"Because I've spent my entire life preparing to die. I never learned how to live." He cupped my face in his hands, his gray eyes burning with intensity. "But I want to learn. With you. If you'll teach me."

I felt tears prick my eyes. "You're going to be a terrible student."

"I know."

"And I'm going to be a demanding teacher."

"I'd expect nothing less."

I kissed him again, harder this time, pouring everything I couldn't say into the press of my lips against his. When we broke apart, we were both breathing hard.

"We need to go," I said. "Before I change my mind and decide to keep you here forever."

"That doesn't sound so bad."

"Focus, Dante."

"Yes, ma'am."

We gathered what little we had and slipped out of the hotel, disappearing into the rainy night. The city was quiet, the streets empty, and I felt like we were the only two people in the world.

But we weren't alone. In the shadows, a figure watched us go, a phone pressed to their ear.

"They're heading east," the figure said quietly. "Toward the Marchetti estate. Should we intercept?"

A pause. Then a voice on the other end, cold and calculating.

"No. Let them go. Let them think they have a chance. It will make their defeat that much sweeter."

The figure nodded and melted into the darkness, leaving nothing behind but the echo of a threat.

The Marchetti estate was a monument to old money and older violence.Marble floors stretched in every direction, polished to a mirror shine. Crystal chandeliers hung from ceilings painted with frescoes depicting scenes of war and conquest. Men in dark suits lined the walls like statues, their eyes tracking our every move, their hands never far from the weapons hidden beneath their jackets.Dante walked beside me, his hand resting on the small of my back, a possessive gesture that was both protective and claiming. His wound was still healing, but he moved with the same predatory grace, his gray eyes scanning the room, cataloging exits and threats."Remember what I told you," he murmured, his lips barely moving. "Let me do the talking.""I remember.""Good."We were led into a study that could have housed a small army. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with leather-bound volumes that looked centuries old. A massive desk dominated the center of the room, and behind it sat Lorenzo March

The door clicked shut behind Dante, and I felt the sound in my bones.Lorenzo watched me with amusement, his thin lips curved into a smile that made my skin crawl. He gestured to one of his men, a hulking figure with a scarred face and dead eyes."Take Mrs. Donovan to the east wing. Make sure she's comfortable."The man, who I mentally named Scarface, grunted and motioned for me to follow. I didn't move."I want to see the gardens first," I said.Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. "The gardens?""I've heard they're beautiful. And I've been stuck in a car for hours. I need air."Scarface looked at Lorenzo, who shrugged. "Fine. Show her the gardens. But don't let her out of your sight."The gardens were magnificent. Rows of roses in every color imaginable, ancient olive trees twisted by time, marble fountains that sparkled in the morning light. It was the kind of place that belonged in a painting, not in the backyard of a crime lord.I walked slowly, my eyes cataloging everything. Exits. Securi

The car hummed beneath us as we sped through the darkness, the rain finally letting up but leaving the roads slick and treacherous. Dante drove with one hand on the wheel, the other pressed against his wounded shoulder, his jaw tight with pain he refused to acknowledge.I watched him from the passenger seat, my mind racing. The flash drive was tucked into my bra, the only place I could think of that Isabella's men wouldn't search if we were stopped. The evidence of my father's innocence, of Dante's parents' murder, of everything Isabella had done. It felt like a live grenade pressed against my heart."You're staring," Dante said, his voice cutting through the silence."You're bleeding through your bandage.""I'm aware.""You need to let me look at it.""I need to get us to the Marchetti estate before Isabella's men find us." He glanced at me, his gray eyes glinting in the darkness. "I've survived worse.""Forgive me if I don't find that comforting."His lips twitched, that almost smil

Isabella Donovan was everything I expected a Mafia queen to be. Tall, elegant, with silver hair swept back from a face that had probably launched a thousand ships in her youth. She held the gun with practiced ease, her aim never wavering from Dante's chest."Aunt Isabella," Dante repeated, his voice carefully controlled. "I should have known you were involved.""Involved?" Isabella laughed, the sound cold and brittle. "Darling, I built the Council. Your uncle was just a figurehead. Victor was my puppet, Angelo my enforcer. And your father?" She smiled, a cruel twist of her lips. "He was in my way."I watched the color drain from Dante's face. His father. Isabella's own brother. She had killed him."Why?" Dante's voice cracked, the first sign of weakness I had ever seen in him."Because he was weak," Isabella said simply. "He wanted to legitimize the family business, to go clean. He would have destroyed everything we built. So I removed him. And then I raised you, molded you into the p

The safehouse was a small, nondescript building on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind a facade of legitimate businesses and layers of security that would make a fortress jealous. Dante led me inside, his hand never leaving my back, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.Marcus was waiting for us, his face grim. "We lost two men in the firefight," he said quietly. "Rosetti's people were waiting for us. Someone tipped them off.""Victor," Dante said, the name coming out like a curse. "He knows we have the evidence. He's going to move fast.""We need to move faster."Dante nodded, then turned to me. "You should rest. There's a room in the back. I'll come get you when we have a plan.""I'm not leaving you.""Chloe-""I said I'm not leaving you." I crossed my arms, meeting his gaze with a stubbornness that matched his own. "This is my fight too. My father died trying to expose these people. I'm not going to sit in a back room while you risk your life to finish what he started."Da
