Blood and Betrayal

Isabella Donovan was everything I expected a Mafia queen to be. Tall, elegant, with silver hair swept back from a face that had probably launched a thousand ships in her youth. She held the gun with practiced ease, her aim never wavering from Dante's chest.

"Aunt Isabella," Dante repeated, his voice carefully controlled. "I should have known you were involved."

"Involved?" Isabella laughed, the sound cold and brittle. "Darling, I built the Council. Your uncle was just a figurehead. Victor was my puppet, Angelo my enforcer. And your father?" She smiled, a cruel twist of her lips. "He was in my way."

I watched the color drain from Dante's face. His father. Isabella's own brother. She had killed him.

"Why?" Dante's voice cracked, the first sign of weakness I had ever seen in him.

"Because he was weak," Isabella said simply. "He wanted to legitimize the family business, to go clean. He would have destroyed everything we built. So I removed him. And then I raised you, molded you into the perfect heir. I thought you would be useful. I was wrong."

"You made me believe your father's betrayal killed my parents," Dante said, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. "You let me hate him for years."

"Your father was a means to an end. Just like Victor. Just like you." Isabella's gaze shifted to me, and her eyes narrowed. "And just like her father. I must admit, I was surprised when Victor told me you had married the daughter of the man who supposedly betrayed our family. But it makes sense now. You always did have a weakness for strays."

"Don't you dare talk about her." Dante stepped in front of me, positioning his body between me and the gun.

"Protective. How sweet." Isabella's finger tightened on the trigger. "Unfortunately, that's exactly what I was counting on."

The shot rang out, and time seemed to slow. I saw Dante lunge to the side, trying to shield me, but the bullet caught him in the shoulder, spinning him to the ground. Blood bloomed across his white shirt, and he grunted in pain, his hand pressing against the wound.

"Dante!" I screamed, dropping to my knees beside him.

"Run," he gasped, his face pale with pain. "Chloe, run."

"Not without you."

I looked up at Isabella, who was watching us with cold amusement. She had the upper hand. Dante's men had their weapons drawn, but they were frozen, uncertain. Marcus was edging toward the door, probably to get reinforcements, but he wouldn't make it in time.

"You have something of mine," Isabella said to me, holding out her hand. "The flash drive. Give it to me, and I'll let him live. You have my word."

"Your word means nothing," I spat.

"It's the only offer you're going to get."

I looked down at Dante, at the blood seeping through his shirt, at the pain in his eyes. He was dying. I could see it in the way his breathing was growing shallow, in the way his hand trembled against his wound. If I didn't do something, he would die here, in this dingy safehouse, killed by his own aunt.

The flash drive was in my pocket. I could feel its weight against my thigh, the evidence that could destroy the Council, expose Isabella, bring justice to my father and Dante's parents. But what was justice compared to Dante's life? What was revenge compared to the man I loved?

"Fine," I said, my voice steady despite the terror coursing through me. "You can have it."

"Chloe, no," Dante rasped.

"It's just evidence," I said, pulling the drive from my pocket. "We can get more. We can find another way. You're more important than any of this."

I stepped toward Isabella, holding out the drive. Her eyes gleamed with triumph, and she reached for it, her fingers brushing against mine.

And then I did something that surprised everyone, including myself.

I dropped the drive and lunged.

My fist connected with Isabella's jaw, sending her staggering backward. The gun went off, the bullet embedding itself in the ceiling, and I used the moment of chaos to grab Dante's arm and haul him to his feet. He was heavier than I expected, but adrenaline gave me strength I didn't know I had.

"Run!" I shouted at Marcus and the others. "Get him out of here!"

The safehouse erupted into gunfire. Dante's men engaged Isabella's guards, who had appeared from nowhere, pouring through the doors and windows. It was chaos, a blur of muzzle flashes and shouting, and I focused on one thing only: getting Dante to safety.

We stumbled through a back door, into an alley behind the building. The rain was still falling, turning the ground to mud beneath our feet. Dante leaned heavily on me, his blood staining my emerald dress, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"You're insane," he muttered. "That was insane."

"It worked, didn't it?"

"She'll kill you. She'll hunt you down and kill you."

"Then we'd better find a place to hide."

I half carried him through the streets, my legs burning, my heart racing. I didn't know where we were going, only that we had to keep moving, had to find somewhere safe. The city was a blur of rain and shadows, and I had never felt more terrified or more alive.

Finally, I spotted a small hotel, cheap and anonymous, the kind of place where no one asked questions. I got us a room, paying with the cash Dante had shoved into my hand before we fled, and helped him inside.

The room was dingy, with peeling wallpaper and a bed that sagged in the middle, but it was warm and dry and away from prying eyes. I eased Dante onto the bed and examined his wound. The bullet had gone through, clean, but he was losing blood.

"I need to stop the bleeding," I said, grabbing a towel from the bathroom. "This is going to hurt."

"It already hurts."

I pressed the towel against his shoulder, hard, and he winced but didn't cry out. His gray eyes were fixed on me, burning with something I couldn't name.

"You saved my life," he said quietly.

"You saved mine first. More than once."

"You should have let me die. The evidence, the drive, it's gone. Isabella has it now."

"No." I pulled the flash drive from my pocket and held it up. "I made a copy. Before we left the apartment. I copied everything."

Dante stared at me, and then he laughed, a weak, disbelieving sound. "You are the most infuriating, brilliant, reckless woman I have ever met."

"I know."

He reached up with his good hand and cupped my face, his palm warm against my skin. "I don't deserve you."

"You're right. You don't." I leaned into his touch, despite myself. "But you're stuck with me anyway."

He kissed me then. It was nothing like the kiss at our wedding, all dominance and possession. This kiss was soft, almost reverent, a question rather than a demand. And when he pulled back, there was something different in his eyes. Something that looked almost like love.

"We need a plan," I said, my voice shaking. "Isabella will send everyone she has after us. We can't stay here."

"No." Dante's hand dropped to mine, squeezing gently. "We need allies. People who hate Isabella as much as we do. People who will fight with us."

"Who?"

Dante's expression hardened. "The Marchetti family. They're old enemies of the Council. They've been waiting for a chance to strike. If we offer them the evidence and an alliance, they might help us."

"The Marchettis? Aren't they as dangerous as Isabella?"

"More dangerous." Dante's eyes met mine, and I saw the weight of what he was suggesting. "But they're our only hope. We make a deal with them, or we die. There's no middle ground."

I thought about it. An alliance with another crime family, another group of dangerous men who would want something in return. It was a devil's bargain, but weren't we already in bed with the devil?

"Okay," I said. "We go to the Marchettis. But if this goes wrong-"

"It won't."

"You can't promise that."

"No," Dante agreed. "But I can promise that I will protect you. With my life. Whatever happens, whatever we have to do, you will survive. I will make sure of it."

I looked at him, this man who had married me for revenge, who had hated my father, who had pushed me away and pulled me close in equal measure. He was bleeding and exhausted and probably concussed, and he was still thinking about my safety. Still trying to protect me.

And in that moment, despite everything, I realized that I would follow him anywhere. Into danger, into war, into the depths of hell itself.

"Let's go," I said. "Let's make a deal with the devil."

The Marchetti estate was a monument to old money and older violence.Marble floors stretched in every direction, polished to a mirror shine. Crystal chandeliers hung from ceilings painted with frescoes depicting scenes of war and conquest. Men in dark suits lined the walls like statues, their eyes tracking our every move, their hands never far from the weapons hidden beneath their jackets.Dante walked beside me, his hand resting on the small of my back, a possessive gesture that was both protective and claiming. His wound was still healing, but he moved with the same predatory grace, his gray eyes scanning the room, cataloging exits and threats."Remember what I told you," he murmured, his lips barely moving. "Let me do the talking.""I remember.""Good."We were led into a study that could have housed a small army. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with leather-bound volumes that looked centuries old. A massive desk dominated the center of the room, and behind it sat Lorenzo March

The door clicked shut behind Dante, and I felt the sound in my bones.Lorenzo watched me with amusement, his thin lips curved into a smile that made my skin crawl. He gestured to one of his men, a hulking figure with a scarred face and dead eyes."Take Mrs. Donovan to the east wing. Make sure she's comfortable."The man, who I mentally named Scarface, grunted and motioned for me to follow. I didn't move."I want to see the gardens first," I said.Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. "The gardens?""I've heard they're beautiful. And I've been stuck in a car for hours. I need air."Scarface looked at Lorenzo, who shrugged. "Fine. Show her the gardens. But don't let her out of your sight."The gardens were magnificent. Rows of roses in every color imaginable, ancient olive trees twisted by time, marble fountains that sparkled in the morning light. It was the kind of place that belonged in a painting, not in the backyard of a crime lord.I walked slowly, my eyes cataloging everything. Exits. Securi

  • The Mafia King’s Accidental Wife   The Road to Hell

The car hummed beneath us as we sped through the darkness, the rain finally letting up but leaving the roads slick and treacherous. Dante drove with one hand on the wheel, the other pressed against his wounded shoulder, his jaw tight with pain he refused to acknowledge.I watched him from the passenger seat, my mind racing. The flash drive was tucked into my bra, the only place I could think of that Isabella's men wouldn't search if we were stopped. The evidence of my father's innocence, of Dante's parents' murder, of everything Isabella had done. It felt like a live grenade pressed against my heart."You're staring," Dante said, his voice cutting through the silence."You're bleeding through your bandage.""I'm aware.""You need to let me look at it.""I need to get us to the Marchetti estate before Isabella's men find us." He glanced at me, his gray eyes glinting in the darkness. "I've survived worse.""Forgive me if I don't find that comforting."His lips twitched, that almost smil

The hotel room smelled like mold and regret.I sat on the edge of the sagging bed, watching Dante sleep. He had passed out shortly after our kiss, the blood loss finally catching up with him. I had managed to clean and bandage his wound with the first aid kit from the bathroom, a pathetic little thing with expired antiseptic and bandages that barely stuck. He looked younger in sleep. Less like a Mafia king and more like a man who had been fighting his entire life and was finally allowed to rest. The scar through his eyebrow seemed more pronounced in the dim light, a permanent reminder of the violence that had shaped him.I should have been terrified. I was trapped in a cheap hotel room with a wounded crime lord, hunted by his psychopathic aunt and her army of killers, with nothing but a flash drive and my wits to protect me. My father was dead. My mother was probably worried sick. My entire life had been upended in the span of forty-eight hours. And yet, I felt more alive than I had i

The safehouse was a small, nondescript building on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind a facade of legitimate businesses and layers of security that would make a fortress jealous. Dante led me inside, his hand never leaving my back, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.Marcus was waiting for us, his face grim. "We lost two men in the firefight," he said quietly. "Rosetti's people were waiting for us. Someone tipped them off.""Victor," Dante said, the name coming out like a curse. "He knows we have the evidence. He's going to move fast.""We need to move faster."Dante nodded, then turned to me. "You should rest. There's a room in the back. I'll come get you when we have a plan.""I'm not leaving you.""Chloe-""I said I'm not leaving you." I crossed my arms, meeting his gaze with a stubbornness that matched his own. "This is my fight too. My father died trying to expose these people. I'm not going to sit in a back room while you risk your life to finish what he started."Da
