CASSANDRA'S POV~

My forehead creased in concern as Eden pulled away from my touch, brushing off my question with a dismissive, "Everything's fine." His eyes drifted away from mine and he turned back to his chair, his gaze seemingly lost in thought.

"Has anyone ever told you how much of a bad liar you are, Eden?" I slumped into the chair opposite him, my words falling from my lips in a desperate attempt to understand what was going on. His eyes darkened and he turned away from me.

"What's going on?" I pressed on.

Eden sighed, his fingers running through his hair in frustration. "You know how much I've been working lately, stuck in the office, never taking a break." His voice trailed off, his eyes reddening.

"Yeah, what's wrong?" I asked again, tilting my head to the side, my heart pounding in my chest.

"It's so frustrating! Very frustrating!! I lost it. I lost another order and a deal with Spectrum Technologies. You have no idea what this means, Cassandra. That corporation could have changed my life, and now it's gone." His voice cracked as he lowered his head. Then he pounded the desk, and I sat there, frozen, my heart breaking for him.

I knew there were no words that could make this better, but I also knew that I couldn’t leave him like this, alone with his thoughts. So I took a hesitant step towards him, my hand gently resting on his shoulder, only to feel him stiffen under my touch.

I knew he didn’t want comfort, but I couldn’t stay silent.

"I'm so sorry, Eden. I'm so, so sorry," I whispered. "But please, don't give up. You've been working so hard. One failure isn't the end of the world. I believe in you. You will succeed, I know it."

He raised his head to look at me, his eyes red-rimmed and weary. "No, Cassandra, it's fine. Just go home. You've got work in the morning and it's already late." He managed a weak smile as he moved towards the door, his footsteps tired. "I'll call you in the morning, okay? Goodnight."

I hugged him before he opened the door, but he didn't return the embrace, his body rigid.

Once I stepped out of Eden's office and onto the dark, deserted street, my entire body tensed. I kept glancing over my shoulder, feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise as I scanned the shadows for any signs of danger. How I wished to go back in time, I'd have very much loved not to save that stranger.

With each step I took, my unease grew, until I finally flagged down a taxi and climbed inside, relief washing over me as the car pulled away from the curb.

~ ~ ~

I stepped out of the bathroom, slipping on my night dress as I matched toward my desk. My body felt as if it had been thrown down a flight of stairs. Groaning, I sat down on my swivel chair, pushing it towards my desk and fixing my gaze on the computer screen.

Taking a sip of coffee, I steeled myself for the long night ahead, determined to uncover the secrets behind Spectrum Technologies and its elusive owner. Despite my best efforts, the search yielded nothing but frustration and unanswered questions. The identity of the corporation's founder remained shrouded in mystery, doing nothing but to taunt me.

I felt my patience slowly slipping away. Without hesitation, I pulled the power cable from the socket violently. Slamming my hand down on the desk, I pushed myself to my feet. "Deep breaths," I muttered to myself, "breathe in, breathe out. Peace is within reach, don't let it escape you!" I repeated the words like a mantra, willing myself to find calm in the midst of the turmoil that swirled around me.

I was beyond tired. My feet ached from pacing back and forth in my room, my mind whirled with unanswered questions. I decided to give in to the exhaustion that weighed heavy on my shoulders and retire to bed. My eyes closed of their own volition, my body sinking deeper into the plush mattress. Before I knew it, I drifted off into a deep slumber.

~ ~ ~

The air was split by the piercing sound of my own scream as I watched, frozen with fear, as several knives suddenly flew towards me. In a flash, they whizzed past, my body sagging with relief. But then I heard footsteps, heavy and dangerous, coming from behind me. I turned and saw masked men emerging from several empty buildings, weapons in hand.

"HELP!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, my voice ragged and desperate. My limbs trembled as I ran, but the men kept chasing me.

"SOMEBODY HELP ME, PLEASE!" I kept shouting, my words echoing through the empty streets. But no one came to my rescue.

Just as I felt my body starting to fail me, a stranger appeared out of nowhere, yanking me away from the street. It was the same stranger I had met earlier, the Mafia Don. Without a word, he pulled me behind a pillar and started shooting at the masked men. I felt my legs go weak, my vision blurring as the gunshots echoed around us.

We ran, my heart racing, my breathing ragged. I could feel the Mafia Don dragging me, his hand strong and steady on my arm. And then, suddenly, I heard another gunshot. Everything seemed to slow down, my world now in slow motion. I watched in horror as blood began to soak my hand, dripping onto the pavement. I looked up at the Mafia Don, his face pale and covered in sweat.

"Run," he whispered . "Run and don't look back."

"Don't leave me," I managed to choke out, my eyes filling with tears.

But before he could respond, the Mafia Don slumped to the ground, his eyes staring up at me with an unspoken message.

Suddenly, I was jolted awake by the deafening blare of my alarm clock. Startled, I almost screamed as I sat up in bed, my heart pounding in my chest. It was 8 am, sunlight streaming through my window.

My hands trembled as I struggled to catch my breath, the nightmare still vivid in my mind. It felt so real, so terrifying. I looked down at my hands, half-expecting them to be covered in blood, but they were clean, safe.

With shaky hands, I reached over and hit the snooze button on my alarm, trying to convince myself that it was just a dream.

"Shit!" I exclaimed, my heart racing as I looked at the time. It was already 8am, and I was late for work. Frantic, I jumped to my feet, cursing under my breath as I stumbled towards the bathroom.

"Miss!" I heard the taxi driver shout as I jumped out of the cab, running down the sidewalk towards the hospital. "You forgot to pay your fare!" I skidded to a stop, whirling around and racing back towards the cab.

"I'm so sorry," I panted, fumbling in my purse for my wallet. "Here, take it all." I shoved a handful of naira notes at the driver, who shook his head with a smirk.

"Thanks, miss. Good luck at the hospital." With that, I sprinted towards the hospital entrance, dodging other pedestrians like a madwoman.

The hospital was eerily quiet when I entered, no sounds of bustling doctors or crying patients. It was as if the entire building had been vacated, leaving behind only silence and shadows. I slowed my footsteps, my heart thumping against my chest as I realized something was terribly wrong.

"I'm here, sir," a pleading voice echoed down the hall, and a chill ran down my spine as I recognized it as my director's.

"Call her! Where the heck is she?! I've been here for several hours and I can't get to see her yet! Call her now!" the booming voice demanded, a voice that seemed all too familiar. My breath caught in my throat as I realized it was the Mafia Don, his voice cold and commanding.

Before I could react, I rounded a corner and found myself face-to-face with several armed men, each of them looking at me with expressions that could freeze even the most hardened soul.

My heart thumped in my chest as I scanned the scene in front of me.

The receptionist was flat on the floor, trembling. My director was sweating profusely, still wearing the same clothes from yesterday. And there he was, the Mafia Don, the man I thought I had left behind last night, now standing before me with a wicked smile on his face.

"Well, look who finally decided to grace us with her presence," he purred, his voice smooth and deadly. "We've been waiting for you, darling."

A thousand questions swirled through my head, but all I could manage was a trembling, "What are you doing here?"

ADRIANO'S POV~The moment her scent hit me, every taut muscle in my body melted. Fuck. My entire system went lax as I pulled her tighter into my arms, burying my face in her hair and breathing her in like she was the last drop of oxygen in a world gone toxic.God, this woman was my drug. My anchor. My goddamn undoing."I missed you so fucking much, tesoro," I whispered into her hair, my voice hoarse, soaked in everything I hadn’t said since we fought. "Couldn’t sleep without you next to me. Couldn’t even breathe right."For the first time all day, I started to relax. Her warmth against me, the rise and fall of her chest, the faint scent of her shampoo—fuck, I was drifting. I’d just begun to doze off, barely halfway to peace, when she stirred. And shoved me.What the—My eyes snapped open, brows furrowing as I looked at her, confused. I thought she was asleep. But no, of course not. She was wide awake now, eyes narrowed with a fiery glare that had no business being so fucking cute. She

CASSANDRA'S POV~I swallowed hard, yanking Adriano’s sleeve a little harder now as I silently begged him not to do something reckless—like bash Dario’s head into the concrete. “Please,” I whispered under my breath, “for the love of God, just walk away. Don’t give these people a show.”Cameras were out. Phones lifted. The internet was probably live-streaming this circus. Two men fighting over me? No, thank you. That’s not the kind of viral I wanted to be.Thankfully—miraculously—Adriano threw one last glare at Dario that looked like it could murder three generations of his bloodline, then turned sharply to me. Without a word, his hand clamped around my wrist, his grip firm but not painful, and he dragged me out of the restaurant like I was some briefcase.I looked back over my shoulder, only to see Dario standing there, smiling like a damn lunatic and waving at me like we were old friends parting after brunch. My throat tightened. I wanted to punch that smugness off his stupidly handso

CASSANDRA'S POV~My jaw nearly hit the damn floor.I stared at Dario, wide-eyed, breath caught in my throat as if he’d just told me the sky was green or that gravity had stopped working. My ears buzzed, actually buzzed like someone had clapped cymbals against both sides of my skull. Was this a prank? Was he joking?Or worse... was I dreaming?A sudden wave of doubt washed over me and I panicked. I bit the inside of my cheek hard.“Shit,” I gasped under my breath when the sharp sting made my eyes water. That pain was too real.I wasn't dreaming.“Oh my God—are you serious?” I squealed, my voice coming out breathless, borderline hysterical.Dario’s brows drew together. “Are you okay? Do you need water?”Before I could even answer, he was already reaching for the bottle on the table, uncapping it and pouring it into my glass. I watched him, stunned by how calm he was while my entire nervous system felt like it was short-circuiting.I shook my head quickly, blinking away the shock. “Y-Yea

CASSANDRA'S POV~I walked out of the hospital with my shoulders heavy, dragging behind me. My feet moved, but my spirit didn’t follow. It stayed somewhere back in that office, crushed beneath the weight of a suspension letter and pitying glances.God, I hated this feeling. The same old, soul-sucking feeling that clung to me like a shadow—like I was never enough. Never smart enough. Never strong enough. Never anything enough. And as if the universe hadn’t mocked me enough already today, thunder cracked violently across the sky. A warning. But I didn’t flinch. The rain followed almost instantly, pouring in thick sheets, drenching my scrubs and hair within seconds. I didn’t run. I didn’t even blink. I just stood there, arms limp at my sides, and let it soak me. Maybe, if I stood still long enough, the storm would wash this pain off me—scrub away the shame, the helplessness, the cruel sense of déjà vu that clung to my chest like a noose.I tilted my head back and closed my eyes. The rain

ADRIANO'S POV~The city of Antwerp looked like a jewel box scattered open under the pale sunlight. Glass skyscrapers sparkled against the horizon, trimmed with gold and steel like a high-society necklace. I should’ve been impressed. I wasn’t. I sat at the head of a long, obsidian conference table in the penthouse of a luxury business tower—my tower. One floor below my diamond refinery, where billions worth of stones were processed every year. The room stank of money. Of ambition. Of suits with soft hands pretending they’d ever held power. A sleek woman in a fitted navy pantsuit stood beside the massive projector screen, tapping her laser pointer against an illuminated chart filled with graphs and numbers. “…and if we tap into Sierra Leone’s underutilized supply routes, we can increase exports by twelve percent while keeping taxation under the radar,” she explained in her best ‘please take me seriously’ voice. The room was a roundtable of European, Russian, and African diamond entr

CASSANDRA'S POV~The moment I turned around and saw my mother still standing, eyes wide, staring right at me… and then at Adriano… and then back at me, my soul nearly flew out of my body.I turned crimson red on the spot, my whole face heating up like a microwave had just blasted me.Adriano, the shameless devil, just straightened like he was about to accept an award. And before I could even think of saving the situation, he smirked and said — loudly,"Mrs. Ashford, your daughter’s sweeter than all the desserts in Italy combined. And I’m starving."Oh. My. God.My heart stopped. My soul left my body. I almost blacked out right there. My mother’s jaw dropped. She flushed so deep a red, I was honestly concerned she might combust. Meanwhile, Adriano just stood there, looking proud of himself, like he’d just delivered the line of the century.Without thinking, I moved so fast I surprised myself — and pinched his butt. Hard.Adriano jumped a full foot off the ground like a startled cat, s

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 48

CASSANDRA'S POV~Just as I was about to turn and leave, a loud, unexpected burst of laughter exploded behind me. I froze for a second, blinking in pure surprise. Was he... laughing?Slowly, I turned my head to see Dario clutching his side, trying—and failing—to contain himself. His blond hair was a wild mess against the crisp white pillow, and his green eyes gleamed mischievously even as he wiped a tear from the corner of his eye.I arched a brow, my patience thinning by the second, but I said nothing. I simply stood there, watching him like he was some curious animal at the zoo. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he hummed low in his throat and let out a satisfied sigh. Still chuckling lightly, he shook his head and said, "You are... refreshing, you know that?"I blinked, caught off guard by the softness in his voice."Most people," he continued, his lips still curled in amusement, "don't dare talk to me like that. Especially not here. Not in a country where even the air tr

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 47

CASSANDRA'S POV~Everything went silent. I’m talking graveyard silent. The kind of silence that presses down on your ears and wraps around your chest like a steel wire. No one moved. No one even dared to breathe too loudly. Nurses exchanged nervous glances. A few took cautious steps back, eyes darting to the floor like maybe if they didn’t make eye contact, they could disappear. The bleeding man on the floor let out a soft, pained moan—barely audible. It was enough to make the silence even more deafening. Then, the click of the gun being cocked echoed like a gunshot itself. Gasps erupted all around me. A few nurses whimpered. One covered her mouth and squeezed her eyes shut. He was losing patience. And yet still… no one moved. No one stepped forward. So I did. I don’t know if it was courage or stupidity—or maybe just the fact that I knew if I didn’t move, someone else would die. I stepped out from the crowd. My heart was pounding so loud I could hear it in my ears, but I for

  • The Mafia King's Only Love   Chapter 46

CASSANDRA'S POV~The moment I shut Adriano’s door behind me, it felt like I was locking myself out of something I didn’t even know I needed until now.My steps faltered, my fingers tightening around the strap of my bag as the echo of his voice—so cold, so wounded—rattled in my ears. The look on his face when I said those words… God, I wish I could take them back. I wish I could rewind time and stop my own mouth from moving. But I didn’t go back.I couldn’t.I just walked faster, like creating distance between us would somehow protect me from the damage I’d already done. My chest ached with every step, and my vision blurred with the sting of tears that I fought tooth and nail to hold back. I wouldn’t cry here. I wouldn’t let them see me break. The guards bowed their heads politely as I passed. I smiled—or tried to. It came out crooked and pitiful, like my lips had forgotten how to stretch without trembling. The driver opened the SUV door, and I almost told him not to bother. I wanted t
