Zane was already at the window when Leila came down the stairs, late, in her pajamas, still tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

He sat in the rotating chair angled toward the morning light, one leg crossed over the other, phone in hand, giving instructions to Jonas — a wiry, gray-haired man in a plain black suit who nodded along without a single word of his own.

"You'll take her to the venue," Zane said, not looking up. "Walk the floor plan with her. Note anything out of place."

Susan's POV The orchestra shifted into something slower the moment Susan's hand settled into Thomas's, as though the musicians had been waiting for exactly this cue. Couples drifted onto the floor around them, filling the space until Thomas and Susan were just two more bodies moving in the low gold light—nothing that would draw a second glance from anywhere in the room. He led without hesitation, the kind of ease that came from decades of ballrooms exactly like this one, and Susan matched him step for step, letting her body do the easy work while the rest of her stayed sharp. "You dance like someone who's had lessons she didn't want," Thomas said, guiding her into the first turn. "Is that a compliment or an accusation?" "With me, they're usually the same thing." She let herself smile at that, small and unreadable.

Leila's POVThe aircraft was already accelerating when Leila looked down at the message again.“BETTER OUT OF THE PICTURE”.Her thumb hovered over the reply field. Then she saw the number underneath it, and her breath caught in her throat. The same number. The one that had been sending her those anonymous messages for weeks — the warnings she'd never been able to trace, the ones that always seemed to know exactly where she was a day before she moved again.Carlos.It had been Carlos all along. Her fingers tightened around the phone hard enough to hurt.Every warning.Every unsigned message telling her to run, to wait, to trust no one.Every time he'd shown up exactly when she needed him, as if he'd known before she did. She'd thought it was instinct. She'd thought it was luck.He hadn't just known what was coming. He'd been part of

Susan's POV Thomas Veil smiled. Across the ballroom, through a sea of crystal chandeliers and glittering conversations, his gaze settled on Susan and didn't move. Her heartbeat slowed instead of quickening. Jonas had trained her for this. Never react first, never assume, never chase. She returned the smile—calm, polite, nothing more than courtesy between strangers. Then Thomas began walking. Straight toward her. Every step seemed to shorten the distance between them. Around them, the gala continued as though nothing had changed. Waiters drifted through the crowd with champagne. A senator laughed too loudly at a donor's joke. Somewhere near the stage, applause broke out before fading into the music again. None of it reached Susan. She placed her champagne glass onto a passing tray before she r

Evening settled over the venue of the charity gala in a blaze of gold. Luxury cars stretched along the circular driveway, their polished bodies reflecting the glow of towering chandeliers visible through the ballroom windows. Camera flashes erupted one after another, turning the entrance into a wall of white light while reporters called out names that disappeared beneath the constant clicking of shutters. Zane’s limousine which was carrying Susan slowed to a stop. For a single heartbeat, she remained still. Not because she was afraid. Because she was remembering. Confidence isn't the absence of fear. It's what you do with your face while you're afraid. Jonas's words settled quietly in the back of her mind. The chauffeur opened the door. Light poured inside. Susan stepped onto the red carpet. The

The sunset settled gently over the Rogers mansion. Unlike the usual quiet that filled the estate, today carried a different rhythm. Servants moved quickly through the hallways, voices lowered as final preparations for tomorrow's charity gala continued behind polished doors. Every clock seemed to tick a little louder. Upstairs, Susan stood before the full-length mirror in her bedroom while two attendants carefully adjusted the wine-colored gown draped around her. One smoothed the fabric over her waist. The other fastened the final clasp behind her neck. "There," one of the women said with a smile. "Perfect." Susan slowly turned toward the mirror. The dress fit flawlessly. Elegant without being extravagant. Beautiful without demandin

The whiskey had stopped burning hours ago. Carlos left Leila and stepped out of the hotel to a bar rest his mind. He couldn't remember how many glasses he'd emptied. The bartender had stopped asking if he wanted another and had simply begun replacing the empty glass whenever it ran dry. Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows. Inside, the television above the shelves played muted sports highlights that nobody was watching. Carlos stared into the amber liquid swirling inside his glass. His reflection stared back. Older. Tired. Guilty. He laughed once under his breath. "You look terrible." The words disappeared into the music. No one heard them except him.
