Ver mĂĄsSerenaâs POV
âSERENA! Get down here before I come upstairs and drag you myself!â My motherâs voice echoed through the house. I closed my eyes and took a slow breath. Another morning, another argument. At this point, I was beginning to wonder whether peace was something other people were born with and I had simply missed out on. I pushed myself out of bed and looked at the faint marks on my wrist. I quickly pulled the sleeve of my oversized sweatshirt over them. My mother, Evelyn Hayes, had always been unpredictable. Some days, she ignored me as if I didnât exist. On others, she found a reason to remind me how much she regretted having me. I had stopped asking why years ago. When I reached the kitchen, I found her sitting at the counter beside a man I had never seen before. An empty bottle rested between them. âLook who finally decided to join the living,â she muttered. I ignored her and opened the refrigerator. Nothing. Not even milk. âIs there anything to eat?â I asked. The man laughed under his breath. âMaybe you should learn to be grateful for the roof over your head.â I turned to face him. âAnd perhaps you should learn not to comment on things that have nothing to do with you.â His smile disappeared. My mother slammed her glass against the counter. âWatch your mouth, Serena!â I stared at her. For one foolish second, I wished she would defend me. Not because I needed her permission to stand up for myself, but because some part of me still wanted a mother who cared. That part of me was becoming harder to find. I grabbed my bag and headed for the door. âWhere do you think youâre going?â she demanded. âSomewhere I donât have to listen to you.â I barely made it outside before she shouted something after me. I kept walking. The morning air was cold, and the streets were unusually quiet. I loved mornings like this because, for a little while, I could pretend my life was ordinary. But my life had never been ordinary. My father, Richard Hayes, had been a powerful man. People respected him, feared him, and sometimes crossed the street to avoid him. He had died when I was fourteen, leaving behind a fortune, a family name, and secrets no one was willing to explain. My mother claimed he had been a businessman. I knew better. Two years before his death, I had overheard him speaking to a man about weapons, territory, and a debt that could never be repaid with money. I had never forgotten that conversation. At school, I slipped into my seat near the back of the classroom and put on my headphones. I wanted one peaceful day. Apparently, the universe found that request amusing. The classroom door opened, and the noise died almost instantly. A tall young man entered with two men dressed in dark suits behind him. His black hair was neatly styled, his expression unreadable, and his eyes carried the kind of coldness that made people reconsider their next words. He looked around the room as though he owned it. Then his gaze settled on me. I frowned. What was his problem? He approached my desk, stopping close enough that I had to tilt my head to meet his eyes. âSerena Hayes?â I removed one headphone. âDepends whoâs asking.â One of the men behind him shifted, but the stranger raised a hand to stop him. A faint smile appeared on his face. âAdrian Blackwood.â The name meant nothing to me at first. Then I remembered the stories my father had once told in a voice so quiet I had to lean closer to hear them. The Blackwoods. One of the most feared families in the country. I stood slowly. âWhat do you want?â Adrian studied me for a moment. âYour father left something unfinished.â âMy father is dead.â âI know.â âThen whatever unfinished business he had is none of mine.â His smile vanished. âIâm afraid it became yours the moment he died.â Before I could answer, he placed a black envelope on my desk. My name was written across the front in silver ink. I opened it with trembling fingers. Inside was a photograph of my father standing beside Adrianâs father. Beneath it was a single sheet of paper bearing my fatherâs signature. I read the first line. Then the second. By the third, my entire world had tilted. My father had promised my hand in marriage to the Blackwood heir. Adrian watched as the colour drained from my face. âYou have got to be joking,â I whispered. âI rarely joke about business.â I looked up at him, anger replacing my shock. âYou think Iâll marry you because two dead men made an agreement?â âNo,â he replied calmly. âI think youâll marry me because refusing may cost you far more than your freedom.â He turned towards the door. âYour family will explain everything tonight.â I crushed the paper in my fist. âAnd if I refuse to attend?â Adrian paused without turning around. âThen Iâll come back for you myself.â The door closed behind him.Adrian's POV I noticed the bruises on Thursday. It wasnât intentional. Serena had arrived late to class, carrying too many books and apologising to absolutely nobody. She dropped into her seat beside Luca, who immediately began complaining about the sandwich she had brought for lunch. Apparently, he considered a cheese sandwich an insult to his existence. I would have ignored them if Serena hadnât reached across the desk for a pen. Her sleeve slipped down. For a moment, I saw the dark marks on her wrist. Then she pulled the fabric back into place. Quickly. Too quickly. I looked away before she could notice me watching. But I had already seen enough. The bruises werenât the kind someone got from accidentally bumping into a door. I had grown up around people who knew how to hurt others and disguise the evidence. I knew what I was looking at. And I knew better than to ask questions in a crowded classroom. Still, something unpleasant settled in my chest.
Serena Hayes If there was one thing I had learnt about Adrian Blackwood in the two days since I met him, it was that the boy had absolutely no idea how to behave like a normal human being. He barely smiled. He rarely spoke unless he had something important to say, and he looked at people as though he was deciding whether they were worth his time. Honestly, the man needed a hobby. Preferably one that involved smiling. I sat at my desk, staring at the mathematics questions in front of me. Numbers had never been my enemies, but today they seemed determined to ruin my life. I sighed dramatically and dropped my pencil. âHaving a little problem, princess?â I looked up. Luca Moretti stood beside my desk, wearing the kind of grin that made me wonder how he had survived this long without someone throwing a chair at his head. âDo you ever mind your business?â I asked. âOccasionally. But your suffering is far more entertaining.â âWonderful. Iâm glad my pain brings joy to someone.â H
Serenaâs POV I woke to the sound of someone knocking. For one terrified second, I thought I was back home. Then I remembered the black house, the silver key, and Adrian Blackwood. âWho is it?â âBreakfast,â a womanâs voice answered. I opened the door to find a middle-aged woman holding a tray. âGood morning, Miss Hayes. Iâm Margaret. I manage the household.â âGood morning.â She smiled warmly and placed the tray on a small table. âMr Blackwood asked me to make sure you had everything you needed.â I looked at the food. Toast, eggs, fruit, and a glass of orange juice. It was a simple breakfast, but something about seeing a full tray made my chest tighten. I couldnât remember the last time someone had prepared a meal for me without expecting something in return. âThank you,â I whispered. Margaret gave me a sympathetic look. âYouâre welcome, dear.â After she left, I ate slowly, then explored the room. A wardrobe held several dresses in different sizes. On the dressing tab
Adrianâs POV The drive to my residence was silent for the first ten minutes. Serena sat beside me, clutching the silver key so tightly that its edges pressed into her palm. Marcus drove, occasionally checking the rear-view mirror. I had already contacted my security team. The men who entered the Hayes residence had escaped before we could identify them, but they had left something behind. A black glove. Inside it was a small metal badge stamped with a symbol I recognised immediately. The symbol belonged to a group that supposedly no longer existed. The Ash Circle. Years ago, the organisation had controlled several illegal shipping routes across the coast. My father had fought them for control of the ports, and Richard Hayes had helped him end their influence. Or so I had been told. If the Ash Circle had returned, then the arrangement between our families was more dangerous than I had imagined. âWhere are you taking me?â Serena asked. âMy house.â She turned towards me. â
