Leila regretted getting into the car almost immediately.

The silence was unbearable.

She sat stiffly in the backseat of the black SUV while Zane Rogers sat across from her, scrolling through documents on a tablet as if he hadn't terrified her every single day since they met.

The city rolled past outside the tinted windows.

Nobody spoke.

Not the driver.

Not the bodyguards.

Not Zane.

The silence stretched so long that Leila eventually found herself stealing glances at him.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

How could someone be that calm after shooting people?

After kidnapping people?

After turning her entire life upside down?

As if sensing her stare, Zane looked up.

Their eyes met.

Leila immediately looked away.

Unfortunately, that only made him notice.

"You keep staring."

Leila's face heated.

"I wasn't staring."

"You were."

"I wasn't."

A faint smirk touched his mouth.

Leila hated that smirk.

It always looked like he knew something she didn't.

The silence returned.

A few minutes later, one of the bodyguards handed Zane a bottle of water.

Without looking at her, Zane extended another bottle in her direction.

Leila stared at it suspiciously.

"No."

Zane looked at her.

"It's water."

"I know what water is."

"Clearly."

Leila frowned.

"I don't want anything from you."

Zane shrugged and placed the bottle beside him.

Suit yourself.

For some reason, that irritated her more.

The vehicle continued moving.

Leila tried focusing on the view outside.

It didn't work.

Her stomach felt strange.

At first, she blamed nerves.

Then she blamed the speeding vehicle.

Then she blamed Zane.

Mostly Zane.

The feeling worsened.

Leila swallowed.

The nausea remained.

Five minutes later, it doubled.

Her face paled.

No.

No.

No.

Not now.

Anything but this.

She pressed a hand over her mouth.

One of the bodyguards noticed immediately.

"Sir..."

Zane looked up.

His eyes narrowed.

Leila knew that look.

It was the look people gave right before disaster happened.

"Stop the car," she whispered.

Nobody heard her.

"Stop the car."

The nausea surged violently.

Zane's expression changed.

"Driver—"

Too late.

Leila lunged forward.

The entire contents of her stomach erupted directly onto the expensive leather interior.

The SUV exploded into chaos.

The driver cursed.

The bodyguards froze.

Leila wanted to die.

Absolutely die.

The silence afterward was somehow worse than the vomiting itself.

She remained frozen.

Unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to look at anyone.

Especially Zane.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She turned her head.

Zane stared at the disaster.

Then at her.

Then back at the disaster.

The look on his face wasn't anger.

Which somehow made it worse.

It was disbelief.

Pure disbelief.

Leila covered her face immediately.

"Oh, my God."

Nobody spoke.

Not a single person.

The driver pulled sharply onto the roadside.

The vehicle stopped.

Leila wished her life would stop, too.

A long sigh escaped Zane.

Then another.

He rubbed a hand across his face.

"Get her into the second vehicle."

The bodyguards moved instantly.

Leila climbed out without saying a word.

Her entire soul had left her body.

The second SUV waited behind them.

She practically ran toward it.

Behind her, she heard one of the guards asking if the first vehicle should be cleaned immediately.

Then she heard Zane answer.

"No."

A pause.

"Burn it."

The guards froze.

Leila spun around.

"What?!"

A faint smirk appeared on Zane's face.

For one brief second, she realized he was joking.

But she still couldn't shake off the feeling that he might have meant it cause of his disgusting expression

She could flush and climb into the second SUV.

“This was officially the worst day of her life”.

She said

---

An hour later, the towering glass structure of Techno Mall appeared ahead.

Leila stared through the window.

Finally.

A normal place.

No guns.

No murder.

Just dresses.

That was all she needed.

A dress.

Five more days.

Ten million dollars

Then she would disappear from Zane Rogers' life forever.

The SUV rolled into the parking lot.

Bodyguards exited first.

The area looked peaceful.

Safe.

Ordinary.

Leila stepped out and took a deep breath.

For the first time in days, she almost relaxed.

Almost.

Because unknown to them, several floors above them—

Hidden behind dark glass—

A man lowered a rifle scope.

His finger rested lightly against the trigger.

His eyes never

Ever left Zane Rogers?

"Target confirmed," he said quietly into his earpiece.

A voice answered immediately.

"Take the shot when ready."

The sniper smiled.

Below, completely unaware, Leila followed Zane toward the mall entrance.

And somewhere inside the crowd—

Someone else was already watching.

Scene One The silence inside the SUV refused to break. Jonas stared at the tablet in his hands as though reading it one more time might somehow change what was already there. It didn't. Susan's name was still missing. Rain streaked across the windows, blurring the city into ribbons of white and gold. No one spoke. The driver tightened his grip on the steering wheel. In the back seat, Zane remained motionless. His gaze stayed on the darkness outside. "Boss..." Jonas said quietly. "There has to be a mistake." "There isn't," Zane replied. Jonas looked down at the screen again. Every extraction team. Every vehicle. Every operative. He had checked them all. Twice. His thumb hovered over Susan

Susan's POV Susan didn't look back. The moment the smoke began to thin, two men emerged from the gray. "This way." They didn't wait for an answer. One moved ahead. The other stayed behind her as they disappeared through a narrow service passage hidden behind the corridor. The fire alarm still screamed overhead. Voices echoed from the staircase. Security was coming. Fast. The three of them hurried through a maze of staff hallways, empty kitchens, and dimly lit service corridors where the sounds of the gala became little more than distant noise. No one spoke. There wasn't time. One final door opened onto the underground parking garage. Cold night air rushed in. A black SUV waited with its engine already running. The re

Susan's POV The corridor had narrowed to almost nothing and the light seems to have become dimmer. Only the two of them remained beneath the last lantern, the city glittering beyond the stone railing while the distant orchestra floated up from the ballroom below. Thomas hadn't let go of her hand since they'd left the balcony doors behind. His attention stayed fixed on her, calm and unwavering, as though nothing in the world could interrupt the conversation he believed he controlled. Susan smiled. "So," she asked lightly, "do you always bring strangers up here?" "Only the interesting ones…maybe too important ones”. "And what makes someone interesting or too important to you?" "T

Zane's POV Jonas crouched beside him, voice pitched low enough to die beneath the orchestra. "You looked like you'd seen a ghost." Zane didn't answer. His pulse hadn't fully leveled yet, and Leila's face still hung somewhere behind his eyes, stubborn as smoke, refusing to dissolve the way the rest of the hallucination already had. Jonas pressed a small glass vial into his palm. "Drink. If that glass was tampered with, this buys you time to think straight before it matters." "What is it?" "Glucose. Stimulants. Whatever they gave you, this'll burn through it faster than your body would on its own." Zane didn't ask anything further. He tipped the vial back in one motion, the bitterness scraping down his throat like a warning, and closed his eyes against it, willing the last of the fog to clear. When he opene

Susan's POV The orchestra shifted into something slower the moment Susan's hand settled into Thomas's, as though the musicians had been waiting for exactly this cue. Couples drifted onto the floor around them, filling the space until Thomas and Susan were just two more bodies moving in the low gold light—nothing that would draw a second glance from anywhere in the room. He led without hesitation, the kind of ease that came from decades of ballrooms exactly like this one, and Susan matched him step for step, letting her body do the easy work while the rest of her stayed sharp. "You dance like someone who's had lessons she didn't want," Thomas said, guiding her into the first turn. "Is that a compliment or an accusation?" "With me, they're usually the same thing." She let herself smile at that, small and unreadable.

Leila's POVThe aircraft was already accelerating when Leila looked down at the message again.“BETTER OUT OF THE PICTURE”.Her thumb hovered over the reply field. Then she saw the number underneath it, and her breath caught in her throat. The same number. The one that had been sending her those anonymous messages for weeks — the warnings she'd never been able to trace, the ones that always seemed to know exactly where she was a day before she moved again.Carlos.It had been Carlos all along. Her fingers tightened around the phone hard enough to hurt.Every warning.Every unsigned message telling her to run, to wait, to trust no one.Every time he'd shown up exactly when she needed him, as if he'd known before she did. She'd thought it was instinct. She'd thought it was luck.He hadn't just known what was coming. He'd been part of
