Chapter 1

My father, Arthur, spotted me first. He saw the gun in my hand and turned pale.

"Helene... calm down. Warren and Chloe are already legally married. It's done!"

My mother, Elena, quickly rushed to shield Chloe.

"Helene, don't blame them. You've always been too ruthless and controlling. If you knew, you would've gone crazy. Warren had no choice but to fake his death and elope. He loves Chloe, that's the truth."

"You're already the head of the Frey family. For your father and me, just let them be."

I stared at the perfect couple hiding behind my parents, dead silent.

A second later, I raised my gun and shot the massive crystal chandelier above them. Glass shattered everywhere, and the crowd screamed in terror.

"You all know how I deal with traitors, right?"

I aimed my gun straight at Warren and Chloe.

Pale and shaking, Chloe hid behind him.

"Enough!"

Papa roared, swatting the gun out of my hand. Pain flared in my wrist.

"Are you going to kill your own sister? Do your mother and I mean nothing to you?"

"We knew about this too. Are you gonna whack us as well?"

My mother scowled. "Helene, you really need to control your temper."

I looked around the room. Aside from my parents, it was filled with the Made Men I trusted most.

They all looked down, dodging my eyes.

My nose stung.

I had scars all over my back from taking hits to save these men. I was ruthless, sure, but I bled for the people I trusted.

The money I made over the years bought my parents their mansion, giving them a life of absolute luxury.

But now, every single one of them stood against me.

I put my life on the line for them. I gave them power and wealth. They swore they'd always have my back.

I wiped a stray tear from my face and glared at them.

"Why? I never did you wrong."

For three years, they watched me expand our territory like a maniac for Warren. They watched me numb myself with booze and brutal training every night, turning into a heartless killing machine.

But not a single one of them had the decency to tell me Warren was still alive.

"Alright."

Warren sighed, pushing through the crowd toward me.

"Today is my wedding day. I don't want any blood."

His eyes were cold. He looked at me like I was just an annoying stranger in his way.

"No explanation?"

I stepped up, staring at Chloe behind him.

"You played me for three years, and you have nothing to say?"

Warren suddenly pulled a knife, pointing the cold blade at me.

We locked eyes, and I suddenly laughed.

"Is that your answer?"

The next second, Warren flipped the blade and drove it hard into his own shoulder.

He smirked at me, sneering, "That's my payback to you. Happy now? We're even."

Blood dripped down his fingers. He went pale from the pain, and Chloe lunged forward.

"Warren, why did you do that?"

She suddenly tried to grab the knife.

"I'm the one who wronged Helene. Let me pay her back!"

Warren kicked the knife away and shoved her behind him.

"This has nothing to do with you!"

He turned to me, annoyance written all over his face.

"We were only engaged, not married. You were just so stubborn and vicious, I couldn't tell you I didn't love you!"

"How else was I supposed to get rid of you besides faking my death?"

Hearing those words, my nails dug into my palms.

I thought Warren and I were soulmates, a power couple. We had the same ambition—to run the strongest mob family in New York.

On the night we got engaged, he said he'd stay by my side forever. I believed him. When he "died," I wanted to die with him.

If it weren't for the need to avenge him, I wouldn't have survived.

But now, it was all a lie.

Chloe held onto him tightly, her eyes red as she looked at me.

"Helene, I'm sorry, but I truly love Warren."

She was weak and fragile as always. Growing up, I was used to taking care of her, letting her have her way.

But that didn't mean I was okay with her stealing my fiancé.

"Chloe, how could you do this to me?"

Warren shielded her.

"Honestly, I should thank you."

He laughed, like he was recalling a fond memory.

"If it wasn't for you, I never would have met Chloe. I never would have fallen for her. Chloe is sweet and caring—a thousand times better than a rough monster like you."

My lips trembled, but Warren wasn't done.

"Oh, and by the way, on the day of the funeral, when you were crying your eyes out in the rain? Chloe and I were watching you from the house across the street."

"You looked pathetic."

I couldn't hold it in anymore. The tears just fell.

"Just go."

With that, he grabbed Chloe's hand and left through the back door.

(Helene's POV)"Maya, give me a hand!"I called out from the front yard of the farm.Six months ago, a minute before the car blew, I noticed something was wrong. I grabbed Maya, jumped out, and we hopped a passing freight train. The blast knocked us out. When we woke up, a farmer in a small Midwestern town had saved us.Maya ran over, grinning ear to ear at the crates of homemade jam."We're rich! Hurry up!"When I got to the market and saw that familiar face, my smile vanished."Helene!"Warren rushed over. He looked thin, exhausted, with gray in his hair."It's you! You're alive!"He grabbed my hand, his eyes welling up.I yanked my hand back and didn't even look at him."You've got the wrong person. I'm not Helene."Warren's hand froze in mid-air."Helene, I know you hate me. I know I screwed up.""I

"Warren, what... what are you doing?"Chloe clawed at his hands, her lips turning blue.Warren slammed her onto the marble counter and grabbed a handful of her hair."You hired a hit on Helene? You blew her up?! Are you out of your fucking mind?!"Chloe sprawled on the counter, terror in her eyes."I didn't! Warren, someone's lying to you! It's a setup!""A setup?"Warren pulled his gun and blew the wine cabinet to pieces."Who set you up? Let me guess, Helene set herself up?!"Chloe trembled violently."I-I swear, Warren, you have to believe me!"She dropped to the floor, hugging his leg, crying."Why would I do that? She's my sister!""Still lying."Warren was done playing games. He tossed his phone down, playing the recording of the mechanic screaming out his confession.Chloe went dead pale. She couldn't speak.Warren's eyes were red with rage."Helene never hurt you. Why couldn't you just let her live?"Chloe coughed, then suddenly burst into hysterical laughter."Why?""Because w

That night, Warren dreamed of Helene. He dreamed of her at 17, cutting through rival thugs, covered in blood, to pull him to safety. He dreamed of her at 21, handing him her last clip of ammo when they were surrounded. He dreamed of her at 27, putting a gun to her head three days after his "death," only to be tackled by her crew. When he woke up, he was drenched in a cold sweat. Her face in the dream was so vivid."Warren, what's wrong?"Chloe blinked awake and instinctively hugged him. This time, he didn't hug her back.He pulled his arm away."Go back to sleep. I'm going for a smoke."On the balcony, Warren held an unlit cigarette. He remembered Helene hated the smell of smoke. He was a chain smoker, but he quit whenever she was around. He opened his phone and clicked into a hidden album.Pictures of Helene popped up.It was from the first time he took her to an amusement park. "What?"Warren shot up from the couch. The phone dropped, putting it on speaker."It's true! Check the news. It's everywhere!""We sent guys to look, but they found traces of C4. Chances are... there's nothing left of her."The line went dead.Warren's vision blurred. His legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the sofa."How is that possible? I just ordered them to drive her out..."Chloe quickly grabbed his arm, hiding a smug look."Warren, don't panic. Helene is tough, she'll be fine."Warren felt a sudden, heavy dread."It was a bomb. How could she..."Chloe hesitated, then said, "You don't think this is one of her tricks, do you? You know how cunning she is. She probably faked it to make us feel guilty."Warren paused."You might be right."He dialed Helene's number."Sorry, the number you have reached is not in service."Refusing to believe it, he spammed her with texts."Helene, stop playing dead. I know this is your game. Come out!"Three days. He sent hundreds of texts. Not a sin

I stared at him in disbelief.Maya was my only real friend. She was the one bright spot in my dark, bloody world. He knew exactly how much she meant to me."Just drive us to the venue safely."He linked arms with Chloe and sneered at me.I gripped the steering wheel so hard my nails dug into my palms.I barely remember how I drove them through the city to the hall. All I knew was the press was having a field day.[Donna turns into a doormat? Drives her own sister to marry her ex!]Warren had even bought internet trolls to steer the narrative."He faked his death just to get away from her. Who wouldn't be scared of a psycho like that?""If I were him, I'd have run too.""All she knows is violence. The unloved one is the real third wheel!"I didn't sleep a wink that night. The next day, I went to the Frey syndicate headquarters, only to find my safe emptied and my things tossed on the floor."Sorry, Helene. I don't know how I left.I stumbled blindly to the cemetery, standing in front of the headstone I'd built for him.I thought of all the times I came here to cry when I missed him. What a joke.I grabbed a sledgehammer and smashed his headstone to pieces. Then I had my Soldatos pack it up, along with the bloody jacket I'd kept for three years, and sent it to him.I gave a bitter smile. "Consider it a wedding gift."By the time I got home, my parents were waiting in the living room. They looked pissed."Helene, did you send that garbage to Warren?""Do you know you terrified Chloe? Or are you just trying to get back at them?""No wonder Warren didn't want you. Pulling a stunt like this... it's absurd!"I stared at the two of them. The two people I was closest to didn't even take my side."Why didn't you tell me? Three years! You knew exactly how much pain I was in!" I choked out.Papa sighed."Helene, you have a whole mafia empire. You have everything! Chloe only has Warren."He looked l
