DELUCA

My head throbbed severely as I sat by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows in my office that early evening. I had been catching up on all the work I’d been putting off for far too long, and it had piled up so high that even Lucas had run off the moment he saw me dive into it. The bastard.

I was exhausted but deep in thought—just like I had been for the past few hours. I stared out at the city, not truly appreciating the view, because my mind was overloaded.

Elena had decided to cooperate with me—but on her terms. Whatever she meant by that—I had a feeling I’d find out soon enough, and I was also well aware that I might not like it. But when has that woman ever done something I liked? She was one hell of a woman—sharp, calculated, always thinking ten steps ahead. She was like me in a way that both soothed and unnerved me. Intrigued me. She might not know it, but I held a lot of admiration and respect for the woman she was.

The way she took those stitches like she wasn’t even pres

DELUCA Sitting in the dim corner of the casino, I let out a long exhale, the smoke from my cigar curling lazily into the air. I’d dismissed the guards a few minutes ago—needed space to think, to restrategize. Business was booming, the slot machines singing and the laughter echoing around the place, but tonight, that wasn’t what brought me here.Lucas was still yet to bring me Edward Dickson. The delay made my blood simmer hotter than usual.A stripper sauntered toward me, swaying her hips with practiced seduction. She moved in rhythm to the pulsing music, dancing around me like I was just another high-roller with money to burn. I didn’t stop her—I knew what she wanted. Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out a wad of cash and began spraying it over her. She smiled, spinning her slim waist like she’d been born for this. For a fleeting moment, my mind betrayed me.I saw Elena. Her model-like face. That radiant smile. The sway of her hips as she walked, head held high. In my head, she rep

ELENA I stroll around the orphanage, hands buried in the pockets of my jeans, slowly observing the children playing. Days like this—when everything feels too much, when the weight of secrets and enemies press too heavily on my chest—I find myself here. Watching them, hearing their laughter echo through the yard like music, something softens in me.The sight of these children makes me feel… grounded. Like maybe there’s still something pure left in this world.A little girl with two messy pigtails and grass-stained knees runs toward me, a stick in her hand like it’s a magic wand. She stops right in front of me, her eyes wide and full of curiosity.“Are you sad?” she asks bluntly, tilting her head.I blink. “A little,” I admit with a small smile.“Then you should play. It makes the sadness go away.”She grabs my hand before I can respond and pulls me down to the grass. I laugh—an actual laugh—as I kneel beside her. She draws a crooked sun in the dirt, then hands me the stick like it’s a

DELUCA “Send the men. I want every airport shut down,” I said, my voice cold and steady. “Edward Dickson must not leave this city.”Lucas was already on his feet before I finished speaking.“What do we do with him when we find him?” he asked, tilting his head, curious.“Nothing. I don’t want a single scratch on him,” I said firmly, locking eyes with him. “Bring him back safe and sound.”Lucas groaned. “There’s no fun in that.”I leaned back slightly, the edge of my mouth curling. “He’s mine, Lucas. I’m the only one allowed to deal with this one.”He grinned, a knowing smirk spreading across his face as he headed for the door.“Besides…” I added before he could leave, “haven’t you been having enough fun lately?”He paused, hand on the door, and turned slowly, eyes narrowing. “Fun?”“What’s your relationship with that girl?”He blinked. “What girl?”“Elena’s friend—the one who got caught up in that accident recently.”“Nothing’s going on,” he said quickly, avoiding my gaze.“You screwi

ELENA "Speechless" didn’t even begin to describe what I felt in that moment. Sitting across from DeLuca, I realized something unsettling—he wasn’t going to save me from his brother. Not this one.I had come here strictly for business. Ever since Sarah’s accident, I’d been sleeping with one eye open. Dante Moretti was still out there. After checking his apartment and finding it empty, DeLuca was my only remaining option. Our contract hadn’t expired, and like it or not, he was still part of the deal."I know it’s none of my business to meddle in your personal life,” the man beside me said casually, “but my brother needs a woman like you—not someone as shallow as his other girlfriend.”"Ex-girlfriend," DeLuca corrected, speaking for the first time since I walked in."We're not dating," I added coolly. “We’re just business partners.”I glanced over in time to see the smirk vanish from the young man's face. For a second, I felt oddly victorious."Such a shame," he muttered, eyeing me curi

DELUCA Sitting behind my desk, I pulled out a pen and my special black book.I wrote down Edward Dickson’s name and added him to my list of enemies. The problem? I wasn’t sure which category he belonged to—was he one of the enemies I’d made in this brutal line of work, or one of the personal demons I’d been carrying since the day my mother was gunned down right in front of me?I glanced around the office and decided to get some work done before Nichole arrived. Today was one of those rare days I beat her to the office. My gaze fell on the pile of paperwork waiting on my desk. I sighed, contemplating where to begin. Nichole had clearly been busy. Just as I was about to reach for a file, my phone buzzed.I didn’t appreciate the interruption, but all irritation vanished when I saw the caller ID.Lucas.I picked up immediately. “Tell me you have Edward Dickson with you.”“I don’t,” he replied, “but I have something even better.”I didn’t have the patience for one of Lucas’s wild teases.

ELENA I’d seen enough to make me walk out.Sitting in that warehouse, watching the scene unfold, I had wished it were Dante screaming and begging for his life the way Louie had.But this war had evolved into a matter of survival. The fittest. The fiercest.Dante had made it clear—he’d go to any length to get to me.He’d used Sarah to send that message. Loud. Clear. It was time. Time to settle the score. Long overdue. The afternoon sun hit my face as I stepped out of the car.Sarah was already home, resting after her discharge. But I was here for someone else.Ava.I pushed the hospital door open slowly, careful not to startle anyone. The soft beeping of machines greeted me again, accompanied by that sterile scent of antiseptic and plastic. But today, the room felt different—brighter, lighter. The curtains were drawn open, letting sunlight flood in. There were fewer wires now. Fewer machines. Less of that quiet, heavy dread.Ava sat propped up in bed, her hair brushed and tied neatly
