I hated local elections. All those candidates smiled in front of the camera, pretending to help the poor but blackmailing people like me for campaign funds. They thought I got all the money easily.

“Let me handle it.” Enzo stood up and straightened his shirt.

“No need.” I rose to my feet and walked toward the door. “The sooner they leave, the sooner the guests will be comfortable. I don't want to lose customers.”

I waited for the elevator to go down to the ground floor while thinking of a sentence to counter the accusations of the police who came to my club. They didn't tell my men the purpose of their visit. So, I had to guess it myself.

Arriving at the ground floor, I headed for the front door. After nodding to the security guard, I strolled into the room on the second floor. The waitress opened the door, and her colleague served food and drinks on the table.

I sat down, awaiting the arrival of the troublemaker. I put an ice cube in a glass and poured scotch into it. I took a sip of

[Darcy]I was relieved not to have to attend Bridget's trial after giving my testimony. Being in the same room as her suffocated me. I was sickened to learn of the crimes she and Sean had committed, not only against Cullen, but also against Sinclair.I was shocked to know that Bridget had worked with Joaquin to provoke Poppy Swan into hurting Sinclair's mother. That woman was cunning. How could she not have investigated the issues between Sean and my deceased father-in-law before killing Sinclair's mother?I couldn’t imagine the life Sinclair has lived over the past fifteen years. He lost his brother, mother, and father in quick succession. He hadn’t recovered from the grief of losing his brother, but had to face the reality that his parents had left him, too.“What’s wrong? Why are you so quiet?” Taylor asked, breaking my reverie.I smiled. “Nothing.”My cousin studied my face closely. “Don’t tell me you’re jealous because your husband often meets with me to give me exclusive news,”

Conrad gathered all the evidence with the equipment he had brought. Mason and Neil accompanied me to see the doctor to hear his explanation about my condition. I was relieved to know that my injury did not damage any organs and that I could go and rest at home.As I left the room, someone hugged me tightly. Recognizing the scent of the woman’s hair and body, I returned her embrace. I was relieved to feel her so close after being away from her for more than twenty-four hours.Feeling Darcy loosen her embrace, I did the same. Her eyes were teary as she looked at me and examined my face and body. “What did they do to you? Which part hurts? What did the doctor say?” she asked.“I can take care of myself. Don’t worry. The doctor said my organs are healthy. The muscles and fat in my body saved me from serious injuries,” I answered.Darcy turned to Conrad. “Tell me. How many people beat him?”“Six,” he answered.“Crazy. The cops held you just to beat you up? Are they official police?” my wif

[Sinclair]The police hadn't given me anything to eat or drink since they detained me. My stomach was hungry and my throat was dry, but I didn't complain. I sat on the floor and stared at the door, watching for anyone to come in.They searched my clothes and took all my personal belongings, my phone, watch, and wallet. I had nothing to help me keep track of time. The room had no windows, so I didn't know what the situation was outside.Neil would break through security if anything happened to Darcy and the children. The fact that he didn't oppose the police coming to see me was a good sign. I could focus on taking care of myself while in custody because my family was under the watch of my people.Someone opened the door and entered the room. Not just one, but several police officers entered with batons in their hands. I stood up and remained alert. So, that was the reason they were holding me in a windowless room.“Finally, the day has come,” the police officer standing at the front s

[Darcy]My body trembled as I watched the three cars pull out of the driveway. Neil followed them, which calmed me a little. My head was spinning with shock, but I knew someone could help us.I took my phone out of my bag and called someone. The man answered after the first ring. “Mason,” I said nervously.“I know. I’m heading to the police station. Sinclair will be released soon,” he said, reassuring me.“Thank you,” I said, relieved.I took a deep breath to calm myself. Dashiell and Keane were in the bedroom. I went to find them and took my sons to breakfast in the dining room. I lied to Dashiell about his father. I told him Sinclair had to go to the office because of work.I followed my husband’s instructions and went to the office. I read the news to find out what had happened. The media reported that the new mayor had discovered evidence of corruption committed by Wallace during his four years in office.Strangely, they only implicated Sinclair as his accomplice and mentioned no

  • The Mafia's Frozen Bride   168|Fall into a Trap

[Sinclair]Joaquin worked with the police to bring Conrad and me down. They offered him a reduced sentence if he was willing to frame me. I was careless and forgot that I had many enemies within the institution. The attack on that disastrous night was just a trap to allow the authorities to investigate my people and me. They wouldn't find anything in Conrad's organization, but they could manipulate the evidence and accuse us of stalking. They would know that Conrad and I collected all the evidence of Sean, Bridget, Joaquin, and several politicians who had issues with me. I was aware of the risks associated with my actions. Therefore, I kept my relationship with Conrad a secret.Fortunately, Giovanni helped me and my men escape the trap set by the police and politicians. They wouldn’t dare cause trouble for him because the SW Group was in his hands. He also held the secret of their involvement in that dirty business.“What’s that sound?” Darcy asked. “Who’s coming this early?”Hearing

  • The Mafia's Frozen Bride   167|No Regrets

I forced Scott to tell me the truth that weekend. It turned out that enemies had tried to break into the house a few nights earlier. They dealt with the problem quickly, and I didn't wake up at all.Sinclair didn't ask me about it that night. I knew my bodyguard had reported everything to him. My husband probably didn't want to discuss the attack. I chose to remain silent. He protected me by keeping the attack a secret. We visited his family's graves on Sunday. The place was beautiful. Although the headstones were simple, flowers adorned all three graves. Sinclair must have assigned someone to do that.Dashiell told us a lot about his grandfather, grandmother, and uncle. His knowledge was quite detailed. He knew their birthdays, when they died, and their habits. Sinclair and the servants must have told him all that.Sinclair took us to Cullen’s grave. We walked there. Seeing the headstone, I didn’t feel disappointed or angry. His actions broke my heart, but I tried to understand. Desp
