Chapter 3

Author: Shirley
At ten in the morning, the first incident occurred.

Marco, a street boss, pushed the door open. He clutched a turf agreement.

"Vittoria, the East Side crew wants to raise the street tax. You wrote this contract yourself back then, take a look."

"This contract isn't my responsibility," I said. "Go find Carlotta."

Marco froze.

"...Carlotta? She couldn't even count how many pages are in this stack."

"Then let her count," I replied without looking up.

He opened his mouth, stood there for a second, then turned and left.

At ten thirty, a call came in from Rico, the casino manager.

"Vittoria, the casino suppliers are backing out, and we're stuck on the penalty clause. I won't be able to open my doors tonight."

His voice was hushed. He sounded desperate.

"Follow the terms in your vendor contract," I said. "Ask the Chief Counsel to fix any loopholes. It's not my problem."

There was a long silence on the other end.

Finally, he forced out a dry, "Understood."

Things simply wouldn't calm down.

At eleven, a capo came over carrying a folder.

"Vittoria, the non-disclosure agreement for that deal down south needs to be re-signed. It was always you who..."

"I have my own contracts to review this afternoon," I said, keeping my eyes on my screen. "Re-signing NDAs isn't in my job description. Go ask Carlotta to handle it."

He stood in front of my desk in total shock.

"Are you kidding me?"

"Do I look like I'm kidding?"

He walked away clutching that stack of useless papers. After two steps, he looked back at me like I was insane.

At two in the afternoon, Leo walked over with two cups of coffee and placed one on my desk.

"Vittoria, what's with you today? Several crews have been asking me about it. They say you're refusing to work."

I took a sip of my coffee.

"I'm only doing what I'm paid to do."

Leo opened his mouth, seeming to want to argue. But he eventually swallowed his words.

He looked at me.

After a moment, he gave a slight nod.

"I understand."

But things unraveled much faster than I expected.

In the afternoon, word got around that things went south.

Carlotta's junior lawyer went to negotiate a deal with our shadow bankers.

The NDA missed three critical clauses. The penalty clause was set at double the agreed figure.

The bank reps flipped out on the spot. They said the Rossi family was playing them for fools.

The partnership negotiations blew up. The casino manager was pacing the hallway like a rabid dog.

My phone started buzzing. I received three urgent texts in a row.

"Vittoria, I'm begging you. If that money doesn't hit the account, my casino is dead tonight."

"They said they're going to shoot up my place."

"Are you going to help or what?"

I looked at the screen.

But the contract in my hand was just getting to the final disclaimer clause.

I just unplugged my phone.

When it was time to clock out, I packed my things and prepared to leave. The whole floor was in chaos.

The whole family was scrambling over the collapsed partnership.

The hallways were filled with footsteps and angry arguments.

When I stood up, several pairs of eyes instantly turned my way.

Leo looked up from his cubicle across from me and gave a subtle nod.

I walked to the door and pressed the down button for the elevator.

Behind me, the casino manager roared in anger, "Vittoria, the bankers are still waiting for our explanation!"

"It's five thirty," I said without looking back. "We'll talk about it tomorrow morning when I'm on the clock."

I pushed open the doors and stepped out into the evening twilight.

Through the gap in the closing doors, I saw the manager's face. He was staring in sheer disbelief.

Back at my apartment, I tossed my phone onto the kitchen counter.

The encrypted family chat had already blown up with dozens of urgent alerts.

I didn't even spare them a glance.

I opened some red wine, took a hot bath, and sank into bed right at eleven.

For the first time in four years, I closed my eyes before midnight.

There were no emergency calls dragging me out of bed to go smooth things over in the black market.

There were no voice messages from Christian rushing me to settle those off-the-books accounts.

I lay in the darkness. The faint neon lights from outside quietly outlined the ceiling.

The heavy burden of family loyalty that I'd carried for four years finally shattered tonight.

I rolled over.

And slept incredibly soundly.

My fourth day of clocking out on time.

To be exact, my fourth workday of refusing to act as the family's firefighter.

The real storm broke.

I'd just punched in for the morning and hadn't even hung up my coat. Suddenly, the West Side capo burst in, sweating bullets.

"Vittoria, those crazy loan sharks turned up the heat. Now all the protection rackets on the West Side have been cut off. We tried keeping a lid on it for three days, but we can't."

The veins on his thick neck were bulging. His tie was askew like a hangman's noose.

"You used to handle the street tax all the time. Please come sort this out for us, I'm begging you."

"Loan shark disputes aren't my department. Go find Carlotta."

The old man's lips trembled as if he wanted to say something, but he swallowed it back.

He turned around and left.

Carlotta finally arrived in a rush an hour into the official workday.

Even so, it was one of the few times she made it to the office before lunch.

She was dressed in an expensive suit. Her perfume floated into the hallway before she did.

She slowed her pace as she walked past my door, glanced inside, and said nothing.

On my first day at Falcone, Dante took me to see my new offices. It was a standalone building with three floors. It had a secure file room, top-tier computers, and a fully staffed twelve-person legal team waiting for my orders. He pushed open the main doors and pointed to a corner office. "The whole floor is yours. You have the final say on who stays and who goes."I strolled right in.There were floor-to-ceiling windows facing the city skyline. On the desk was a potted cactus, with a handwritten card placed underneath it."Welcome, Vittoria. Yours, The Falcone Legal Team."I stood in front of the window for a little while.Leo came over to sign his paperwork a week later. When he walked into the legal building, he saw a wall covered with whiteboards filled with legal frameworks. Every column had a note: Pending Vittoria's Approval. He looked back at me and grinned broadly."Vittoria, this is more like it."Four months later.Using the reshuffled allied contracts I provided, the Falcon

The last day before my departure.I sat at my desk, taking one final look around the room. The small cactus on my desk was a gift from Leo two years ago. He had joked at the time."Vittoria, you're a ruthless woman. We had to get you something with sharp spikes to keep you company."The silver letter opener on my right was a gift from Christian. He gave it to me my first year when I helped the family secure the underground docks.A yellowed sticky note stuck to a thick file showed the profit split I drafted overnight during the last turf war.The codes on it were densely packed, and the handwriting at the end was messy. They were the marks of extreme exhaustion.I shoved the cactus into my bag.I took nothing else, leaving everything exactly where it was.Around noon, Leo dragged me to the outdoor pizza joint on the corner for a farewell meal.A flimsy plastic table, two slices of greasy pepperoni pizza, and a couple of cheap beers."Vittoria, what's next for you?""The Falcones."He f

At noon, he brought two portions of pasta. He slipped into the break room and shoved one to me."Vittoria, just hang in there. These guys are out of their minds.""It's nothing. I'm treating it like a paid vacation.""Where are you planning to go after you leave?""You just focus on keeping your head down. Don't ask too many questions."He hesitated for a second before lowering his voice."Carlotta put together a five-man team. They're planning to forcibly take over the core database. They said they'll spend two weeks cracking your core plans.""Let her.""But Vittoria, the clauses you designed are a maze. Without you walking them through it, they won't even...""Leo.""Yeah?""That's long past being my problem."He froze for a second, then nodded knowingly.A few days later, Jason, the outside lawyer Carlotta had hired, approached me privately. He pulled up a chair and sat down next to me."Vittoria, can I take a bit of your time? Just a purely private discussion about a few legal loo

I pulled an envelope from my drawer. Just an ordinary white envelope.I handed it to him. He tore it open and unfolded the piece of paper inside. It was my formal resignation letter. The date at the bottom was three days ago.The hand holding the paper trembled. Not out of anger, but out of a total loss of control."You!""Under my original contract with the late Don, I never pricked my finger. I didn't take the blood oath. Not only am I protected by the rules set by the late Don, but I'm also a recognized neutral guarantor among the major allied families."I stood up and started clearing my desk.Actually, there wasn't much to clear. A fountain pen, a personal laptop. After four years, that was all the personal property I had here."Vittoria!" Christian's voice pitched up.Not a single person in the entire room dared to breathe."You're just going to walk away like this? For four years, how has the family protected you? Who gave you your power? Who introduced you to the heavy hitters

Looking at him like this, I just found it comical. It took this man less than half a month to go from arrogant to begging like a dog."I don't blame you. Everyone has their own ambitions. But Arthur, don't ever look for me again.""I don't want to see you anymore."He suddenly reached out and grabbed my wrist. He squeezed hard."Vittoria..."I twisted my hand and pulled out of his grip. The pinch of his fingertips on my wrist still left a little warmth. But it was nowhere near enough to make my heart soften. When I walked out of the coffee shop, the reflection in the glass door showed him sitting there alone. His hands were covering his face.I did love him once. But now I felt absolutely nothing. It wasn't even hate.Four years in the mob had hardened me. I wasn't going soft for anyone. The inevitable day finally arrived. The southern smuggling kingpin, Vargas, stormed the Rossi estate with his men. He came to slam tables and pull guns. When he arrived, I was sitting at my desk, doubl

The Siren Club was tucked away in the wealthy South Side. Once the heavy velvet doors of the VIP room were shut, all the noise was completely sealed off.Dante was younger than I expected. He was in his early forties, wearing a dark gray suit with no tie. He had no entourage. He poured the wine and skipped the pleasantries."The hidden clauses in your turf agreements. I had people look into them. Someone in the business saw the version you kept on file. They stared at it for three days and still couldn't crack it."I sat down and poured myself a drink."The filed version is a dummy copy. The real set is four times more complicated."He laughed."I figured. That's why you're sitting across from me now."A waiter brought top-tier steaks to the table. He wasn't in a hurry to show his cards. Instead, he started discussing underworld business with me. We talked about how to ensure cash flow during a turf war, and how to wash money without using shadow bankers.Every move was lethal.
