LEILA

.

.

The sound of the shattering phone hitting the wall wasn't just glass breaking, it felt like my own goddamn heart exploding right there in the sterile, way-too-fancy room.

Bits of screen and plastic rained down, little sharp reminders of the shit I’d just heard, the betrayal hitting me like a physical blow even though the words had landed a minute ago.

Finally, finally, the rage had a goddamn outlet.

Not that throwing a phone fixed anything, but watching it splinter gave a weird kind of release, a physical manifestation of the absolute mess inside my chest.

That phone, useless on the floor now, was just like me broken, worthless in this moment, but unlike the phone, I wasn’t staying down.

She’d come over, a look of utter confusion etched on her face.

"That doesn't even make sense," she'd mumbled, her voice barely a whisper against the sudden silence that followed my outburst.

I’d walked over to the bed after picking up the phone, the urge to just rip off all my clothes

LEILA .. She let the last of the things slip from her fingers, a small thud against the floor that barely registered over the sudden silence which was heavy between us.A thought, hard and dry, just seemed to calcify right in my chest.I hadn’t actually laid eyes on Gerald all day. It struck me then, weirdly.“You actually think he likes you?” The question just dropped, heavy and unexpected, landing right there in my ears.Misa bent to pick up the fallen vase which was actually more of plastic so it didn’t get to break and then the flowers which I also did pick too, her movements quick and practiced, I didn’t even look at her while my eyes darted around the long passage way we were in, just checking if maybe, somehow, anyone could have possibly overheard that. Not likely, not through the thick glass and the noise filtering up, but the paranoia was a quick, cold prickle on my skin anyway.“I don’t think that’s something we should be talking about,” I said, my voice quieter than

LEILA .. He walked closer then, a slow, deliberate pace that felt both lazy and utterly predatory.Misa instinctively went a little back, melting into the wall behind us, leaving me standing in the middle, feeling completely off, unbalanced, exposed. His scent reached me before he did, that familiar, expensive cologne already lingering in my senses, making my skin prickle and reminding me instantly of the kiss, of how his hand had circled around me, pulling me tight against him, and my hand going to his neck, clinging on."You're sweating," he observed, his eyes scanning my face, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips, more like an arched smirk. I could feel the heat on my skin, a flush rising from my chest, the instant, physical reaction from his mere presence, amplified by the feeling of him coming closer. And closer. And closer. Until he was right in front of me, too close, and I tripped on my footwear, my heel catching on a loose stone or a crack in the pavement. In a fair

LEILA .. “Okay, so everything has just been about me lately,” I said, trying to inject some lightness into the air, needing to shift the focus, needing to feel free, just a little, needing to actually breathe because I felt like I was being choked up by all the intensity, all the secrets, all the near-death experiences of the past few days and yeah, my skin, the bruises, the marks from everything, seemed to be coming back to normal, more like getting back its strength, the color returning, the tenderness fading.I felt that this had something to do with the fact that I’d seen my mother, seen that video of her smiling face, or maybe just the fact that I felt genuinely happy these days, a fragile happiness blooming in this dark place, and the growing effort I and Gerald were putting into... whatever this was, this tentative alliance and it seemed like today Damien would be coming around, back to this place.I thought he had a different house from this one, a main residence somewh

LEILA .. He walked into the room, his gaze sweeping over the scene, the rumpled bed, the scattered pillows, the slightly chaotic remnants of our earlier playful moment before settling, just for a second, on my hair, still wrapped in rollers and steaming, then he pretended like all of that, the mess, the general air of well, us, didn’t really matter, his expression carefully neutral."I guess Damien isn't back yet," I said, breaking the slight tension, "or maybe he just doesn't want to come out." It felt weird, with Gerald being in my room while Damien was potentially just down the hall, or somewhere which I didn’t care to know.Misa was still inside the bathroom, the sound of running water and scrubbing a clear indicator she was washing the color out of her hair.I could hear her, and then, through the crack in the door, I saw her peeping out, throwing little kisses at me that made me want to laugh despite the seriousness of the situation.I knew what she meant. It was about the

LEILA .. He’d asked me to come over to his room, something Damien had never done, not beyond the mandatory appearances at that massive dining table.Stepping inside Gerald’s space felt different, like entering a completely separate world within the confines of this sprawling, secretive building. It wasn't just a room, it was like a miniature house, a self-contained universe. He had a small dining area, a library packed with books that made my heart ache just looking at them, everything a house was supposed to have, all tucked away here just for himself. If I had this, I thought, running my eyes over the shelves, the comfortable looking chairs, the quiet solitude of it all, I would never come out.Not ever. The world will never know I exist. And he had offered food like real food.Something Damien had only provided as part of the required meals downstairs before sex and that small gesture alone felt profoundly different."So what did he say again?" Misa asked me, her voice muffl

LEILA .. Three goddamn days had crawled by since the fucked-up dinner party.Three days since Damien’s mouth had been on mine, since his eyes had held that mix of pain and command, two days since the broken phone had been sent back, practically a new one. Three days since Misa had thrown up all over my new dress, effectively ending any lingering fantasy of elegance from that night, and three days since Damien himself had been avoiding me like the plague.That.That said it all.He did kill her. That was the only goddamn thing this avoidance could mean and at my end I was still rationalizing, still grooming Gerald to ask him directly because, yeah, a day to today, I had tried speaking to him.It was when they’d called everyone in for breakfast, which ended up getting canceled for some reason, but I'd seen him then, tried to catch his eye. He seemed to be coming closer these days, less like a distant guard and more like something else.I'd also been moving out of the room more

LEILA .. He moved closer then, deliberate steps closing the small space between us, and closer still until my back was pressed flat against the wall. There was nowhere else to go, I was already at the barrier, but I still tried to shift backward anyway, a futile, instinctual movement, it felt like this time I was inside the wall. His hand came up, his fingers gently touching my cheek, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw.Oh, I thought, but didn’t say it aloud, the realization settling deep in my gut, I knew about it, not when he’d said it, not really processing it until this moment, standing here with his touch on my skin, but I knew now, from today, from the chilling realization with Misa. Then he shifted back slightly, just enough to break the physical press, and his facial expression changed. The intense, commanding look softened, something else flickering in his eyes, something that made me think of how he must have felt when his father had died, or maybe going up to his fa

LEILA .. The clinking of silverware and the low hum of conversation that had filled the massive dining hall began to shift, morphing into something else entirely as the last bits of food were cleared away."I think we will have a dance after this, from what I'm seeing," she muttered, while I watched the subtle changes in the atmosphere, the way people were loosening up, their eyes sparkling with anticipation for whatever came next.Throughout dinner, everyone had eaten and drunk to their fill, listening to speeches that felt like nails on a chalkboard to me.Speeches talking about the glorious end of the "Elvares," whom they had supposedly "slain," and how everything now belonged to them.Praises for Damien, delivered with sickening reverence. He didn’t seem fazed by most of it, just sat there accepting the adulation, stealing glances at me at every goddamn opportunity, his eyes promising things I both dreaded and, in my fucked-up state, was morbidly curious about. And then, ju

LEILA .. I stood there, feeling the unfamiliar silk of the new dress slide against my skin, draped perfectly over whatever curves I had.It was elegant, they’d said, stylish, sent specifically for this.Outside, just visible under the simple, almost-there makeup, I probably looked calm, put together."Ready?" Misa asked, her voice low, a question that felt loaded with everything we weren't saying. My heart hammered against my ribs like it wanted to escape, to get the hell out of this apartment, this building, this city, this whole goddamn nightmare."I think I'm just nervous," I stammered, "I don't even know if I can do any of this."I tried to take a steadying breath, then another, forcing the air into my lungs, attempting some semblance of calm that felt about a million miles away while she reached out, her fingers brushing my arm, more like some reassurance."I think you should calm down," her eyes kind "You'll be fine. All of this will be fine."Her words were meant to sooth
