Damiano

The first thing I heard was the beeping. Slow and steady like a clock counting down my life.

My eyelids felt heavy, glued shut. My chest burned every time I breathed. Something tugged at my arm.

I forced my eyes open. White ceiling, bright lights, monitors then hospital.

“sir? Sir, can you hear me?”

My vision swam before settling.

And then, Her.

Standing near the window. Slim figure, dark hair. Stillness I would recognize anywhere.

My breath hitched.

Aria?

For a second, I forgot how to

  • The Mafia's Lost Queen   Secret I Was Afraid to Tell

Aria“Aria… is that you?” My heart squeezed painfully in my chest. Mom! Her voice sounded older. But it was still her.I swallowed hard before answering. “Yes, Mom.”A shaky breath came through the line. “Oh my God…” she whispered. “It really is you.”I closed my eyes for a second. “I’m here.”Suddenly I heard other voices in the background.“Let me talk to her!”“Give me the phone!”Then my dad’s voice cut through the noise. “Aria?”My throat tightened.“Hi, Dad.”I heard him exhale deeply, like he had been holding that breath for years. “We thought we lost you.”Before I could respond, another voice jumped in. “Aria!”I smiled despite the tears burning my eyes. “Ethan.”“I knew something was wrong,” Ethan answered quickly. “When Ivy never contacted me again after you were pronounced dead. I knew something was wrong. It didn’t make sense.”I leaned against the wall, listening.“So I started searching,” he continued. “I tracked her down eventually and caught her off guard. That’s when

  • The Mafia's Lost Queen   A Lie, A Confession… And One Shocking Phone Call

AriaI raised my brows. How did he get here when he has pains on his legs like his mom said? The hospital director looked just as stunned as I felt. Mr. Smith cleared his throat and looked toward the door. “Come in.”The door slowly opened. Damiano rolled his wheelchair inside. For a moment the room went completely silent.Mrs. Moretti immediately stood up. “Damiano? Why are you here?” She hurried to his side, gripping the handles of his wheelchair like she might push him back out. “You should be resting!”Damiano ignored her. His eyes moved straight to Mr. Smith. “I came to clear something up,” Mr. Smith leaned back slightly in his chair. “Go ahead.”Damiano inhaled before speaking. “Dr. Vale did nothing wrong.”Mrs. Moretti turned sharply. “What?”“The pain,” he continued, avoiding my eyes again, “I faked it.”Mrs. Moretti blinked in disbelief. “You what?”“I faked the leg pains.” he repeat.Mr. Smith sat forward immediately. “Are you saying the complaints you made about Dr. Vale’

  • The Mafia's Lost Queen   The Apology

Aria“Faking it? HOW DARE YOU!” Mrs. Moretti’s voice exploded through the hospital room like a gunshot. “My son is not a child! He would never fake something like this! You’re just trying to avoid responsibility for what you caused!”Nurse Jane froze beside me, clutching the medical file tightly to her chest.I didn’t look at Mrs. Moretti. My eyes were on Damiano. He wasn’t looking at me. His gaze stayed fixed on the blanket covering his legs, his jaw tight.Avoiding me. And that was all the confirmation I needed. I folded my arms slowly. “He keeps avoiding my gaze,” I said calmly. “What would you call that?”Mrs. Moretti scoffed loudly. “That means nothing! My son is in pain. Of course he isn’t in the mood to stare at you.”Jane shifted awkwardly between us. “Maybe we should call the physical therapist,” she suggested carefully. “Just to get a proper diagnosis.”Mrs. Moretti looked at Damiano, then back at me, clearly weighing the suggestion. Before she could respond..“Enough.” Dam

  • The Mafia's Lost Queen   Behind the Groans

AriaMy phone buzzed before my alarm did. Half awake, I reached blindly across the nightstand, expecting the harsh morning light to stab my eyes. Instead…it was Vieri! My lips curved before I even opened the message. “I landed safely. I’m at my Mom’s house now. She already fed me like I’m starving. Text me when you wake up.” He really texted, first thing in the morning.I typed back quickly. “Good. Don’t forget to rest. And don’t let her overwork you.”I stared at the screen a second longer than necessary… like his name alone could keep me company. Two weeks! I sighed and pushed myself out of bed.“Arthur!” I padded down the hallway and nudged his door open. He was sprawled across the bed like a starfish, blanket half on the floor.“Arthur,” I called softly. “Wake up, sleepyhead.”He groaned. “Five minutes…”“Uncle Vieri texted.”His eyes snapped open instantly. “HE DID?!”I laughed. “Yes. He got to Germany safely. He’s at his mom’s place.”Arthur sat up, rubbing his eyes. “Oh…” That

  • The Mafia's Lost Queen   Breakfast and Goodbyes

Aria “Mom! Uncle Vieri brought breakfast!”Arthur’s voice crashed straight into my thoughts. I blinked, still half lost in the mess of last night’s overthinking, and turned toward the living room. “Breakfast?” I repeated. The smell hit me first. Fresh bread and eggs. Vieri stood by the dining table, sleeves rolled up, carefully arranging the dishes like he was plating food in a five star restaurant instead of my apartment. My heart did that stupid flip again.“Oh… breakfast?” I said under my breath.Arthur raised one eyebrow dramatically. “What were you expecting?”I frowned. “What do you mean?”He crossed his arms like a tiny detective. “An engagement ring?”My lips parted.I froze. “What?!” Heat rushed straight to my face.Across the room, Vieri looked up at the same time. Our eyes met. Then I immediately looked away like I’d just been caught stealing. “I…I need to freshen up,” I muttered and rushed to my room before either of them could see how red my face had become.I shut the

  • The Mafia's Lost Queen   The Morning After

AriaThe date with Vieri was the best night I’d had in years. Not just good, not just nice but the best.My lips still tingled like they remembered every kiss he’d stolen. My skin felt warm where his hands had held me like I was something precious instead of something broken. The way he looked at me…Like I wasn’t a burden. Like I was just… a woman he wanted. My heart still hadn’t slowed down.Even now.Even as we sat in the car outside my house. The engine hummed softly. Streetlights washed the dashboard in gold. Neither of us moved to open the doors.“I don’t want tonight to end,” he murmured.I smiled. “It has to. I have a tiny human waiting to interrogate me.”He chuckled. “Arthur’s scarier than most surgeons I know.”“He really is.”We went silent again. He reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing my cheek slowly, carefully… like he was memorizing me. “Text me when you get inside,” he said softly.“Okay.” I whispered. He leaned in. The kiss was
