Emery
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. What was he doing?? Why was he bidding on my mother’s necklace? He knows what that means to me. He has to remember.. did he forget me talking about it with him all those times? The auctioneer called out $10,000 for the first bid and when Jasper raised his hand I had gone into a complete daze. I quickly looked around.. snapping out of it. A few other people were also bidding. Shit. He was up to $25 thousand now. I raised my hand. “25 to the lady in the back ..” the man said. Jasper and Vivian both turned to me. Jasper frowned .. but Vivian.. she grinned. Was she doing this shit on purpose?? She had seen me looking at the necklace in the brochure. How evil are these people? Someone else bid 30 then. Jasper could get anything he wanted. Why did he have to go for the one thing that meant something to me? He had plenty of money… He could easily buy any of these other relics or expensive paintings or statues. Although - how ridiculous is it to buy an eighteen year old a thirty thousand dollar birthday gift?? “35? Anyone for 35?” The announcer was saying. I raised my hand again. This went on and on. A couple of other people kept bidding along with myself and Jasper. But when the necklace got up to a hundred thousand .. they backed out. Now it was just between the two of us. I had two hundred thousand from the property I’d sold. I’d put it away and kept it just for this. I suddenly wondered if Jasper knew that and would keep going until he had ran it all the way up. “150.. 150 thousand .. to the gentleman. Do we have 155? 155 thousand - the lady in the back. 160?…” the auctioneer went on and on and on. Jasper was now looking at me every time I’d make a bid. He knew exactly what he was doing. We got to 200. I raised my hand , I was a nervous wreck now. I was sweating and shaking and bouncing my knee up and down. Please please let me get this… “200 for the lady in the back .. anyone for 205? 205? Going once …” I couldn’t believe it! I was going to get it after all! “Going twice …” I let a smile slip onto my face and began breathing easy as my racing heart slowed itself finally. “205!” Jasper yelled. I gasped. That asshole. He let me think I had won .. he’d done that on purpose. I flopped back on my chair and closed my eyes. I felt tears pricking behind my eyelids and willed them not to come out. I had lost. I couldn’t believe this…. No. I had lost my mother’s necklace, but I wasn’t giving up that easily. Once the auction had ended I marched up to Jasper. “How could you do that?” I asked him. He actually had the gall to look confused. “Do what?” He asked. “Outbid me on my mothers necklace. You knew how much that meant to me!” I told him. I saw a flash of something move across his features. Maybe he actually didn’t know … “I didn’t know that was it.” He told me. “I don’t know if I believe you.” I said. “Look Emery I am sorry. I didn’t realize…” he was saying. “Let me buy it from you then. I’ll give you the 200 thousand now and the other five thousand later.” I insisted. He actually looked sorry for a second. “I can’t do that Emery. Vivian really wanted it. She picked it out from everything and it’s for her birthday. She literally never asks me for a thing.” He said. “She only wanted it because I did! She saw me looking at it!” I shouted .. getting loud. But I didn’t care.. not any more. “Oh come on you’re being ridiculous she didn’t know you wanted it. You really just don’t like her do you? But this isn’t her fault so stop blaming her.” He said. I shook my head at him… all the fight had left my body and I turned to walk out. When I got outside I took a moment to calm down and breathe. The view was beautiful. The museum and convention center where the auction was held were connected by a large walkway and an overpass you could walk through to get between the two buildings. There were large concrete columns set up between the two. They had benches and bushes and even a big fountain. The prettiest thing was the columns were actually made to house gas fire pits. So each one of them had large flames coming out from the middle. I walked over and began looking at one of them, trying to calm my mind. Suddenly, Vivian was standing in front of me…. Holding my mother’s necklace in her hands. “Emery. I’m so sorry. I had no idea that this had belonged to your mother .. Jasper just told me. When I saw it I just knew it was meant to be mine… that’s why he decided to bid on it.. he was just trying to make me happy. He’s so amazing that way.” She said - overly sweetly. “Yeah. Amazing.” I said. I could think of so many other adjectives to describe him but .. sure. “That’s why I decided … I want you to have it.” She said. My head popped up .. shock filled my features. “Really?” I asked her .. not quite believing it. She was seemingly enjoying my torment during the auction .. so I wasn’t expecting this at all. “Yes…” she started walking toward me .. the necklace outstretched in her hand. “It should belong to you…” I held out my hand too.. walking towards her slowly. My mother’s relic just a few feet away. But then.. in slow motion … I saw her trip. The necklace flew out of her hand. She just happened to trip right by one of the columns and the necklace flew into the fire. “Oh no!!” She yelled. I tried to reach it. But the flames were too high. I would burn my hand off if I put it any closer. I panicked, looking around for anything I could get it out with. I found a stick laying on the ground and tried to pick it out with that but it was stuck down in the metal that held the stones underneath the fire. “Help me find something!” I yelled at her. She acted like she was looking but she also didn’t move from her spot. People were coming over and trying to help me but it was no use. It was already practically melted. An heirloom. That had been around for probably centuries.. ruined. In a gas fire pit. I looked over at Vivian who was standing there .. trying her best to look sorry and innocent. She was begging me to forgive her.. but I could see it in her eyes. She had done the whole thing on purpose.Emery He stood there and stared at me for the longest without speaking. “Emery..” he said. “Jasper.” “Hi…” he breathed out. I sighed. “What are you doing here?” I asked him. I was kind of shocked he dared even come here .. he had to know there was a possibility he’d run into one of the guys again. I suddenly wondered if he’d come by while I was gone. He sighed and looked down .. shaking his head. “Emery. Why?? Why would you do this? You left! You left the country for six months and didn’t even tell me! I tried calling you .. I tried texting you! Do you know what that was like for me??” He asked. Now it was my turn to sigh once again. “Honestly Jasper I’m surprised you even care. What difference does it make to you what I do?” I asked him. He had indeed called me while I was gone but I just ignored it. I assumed he called way more than that and just couldn’t get through. He had also sent me about fifty text messages … that I immediately deleted soon as they came
Emery The plane ride home was excruciatingly long. I can’t believe the six months are already up. They flew by… and honestly I wasn’t even ready to leave. But on the other hand, I was so excited to see Elijah and the guys. Towards the end of my trip the phone calls just weren’t cutting it anymore. I needed.. and wanted .. to be close to them. I didn’t however look forward to saying goodbye to Joanne or any of my other coworkers either. I had gotten close with a lot of the residents as well. Some of them gave us special gifts and tokens.. handmade art and jewelry and trinkets. I was happy to always have the souvenirs and memories of this trip. One of the older ladies that lived there and had lived there her entire life was a quilter. She made each of us the most beautiful blanket as a souvenir. She sewed them herself … putting a little something special on each of ours. Mine had a huge reindeer on one side and a beautiful arctic wolf on the other. The colors were brilliant in
Jasper I cannot believe Emery has left the damn country. Not only that .. she took her ass all the way to the Arctic circle. As if she couldn’t get further enough away from here. I still don’t know where exactly she is … but I haven’t finished trying to find out all the specifics either. I’ve still been calling her phone .. no luck there. Either she sees me calling or it’s not going through. Which I wouldn’t be super surprised if it didn’t. She is practically in the freaking North Pole. I mean come on, for the love of god she really wanted to get as far away from me as possible… Even as I think that I know it’s not true. I’m sure that’s where the job was. She went for work not a vacation. She’s probably having the time of her life while I’m here losing my entire mind. Vivian had been driving me nuts the last few days .. weeks …. She was constantly wanting me to do something for her and go somewhere with her. I knew she was trying to make up for the fact that she ruined all of E
Elijah I sat in the chair in my office. I’d left my apartment this morning, planning to go by Emery’s house and check in that everything was fine, when my dad called me and asked me to come here. We own this entire office building along with many other properties and businesses, but most of our main offices are housed here on the top two floors. We rent out the rest of them for supplemental income. That is.. except for Oliver’s apartment.. which takes up half the space on the floor below me. Oliver always said he wanted to be close by just in case. Oliver was a computer genius. He could hack into any system .. and do any and everything with high tech equipment. He kept his laptop on him at all times. But if something went wrong with our mainframe… he’d need to be here in this building. And that would be one of those emergency situations so .. he wanted to be here, to live here close by. Just in case … I’m staring down at my phone and smiling. Emery just sent me some more
Emery I looked around at the view outside my little cabin I was staying in. I breathed in the fresh snowy air. I felt like I was in actual heaven. I’d never seen anything more beautiful than this. We were in Nuuk. And the community here was full of the most interesting and lovely people I’d ever met. The views and the sites were absolutely stunning. I had never seen anything like it. And to think .. I almost missed this. There was snow everywhere. The mountains and the ground were covered in it, along with literally everything else. The lake was enchanting .. icy blue water that was frozen in most places looked as if I had stepped inside a Disney movie. The houses that stood along the shore line looked like Christmas lights with their bright colors. They contrasted with the white background beautifully. I knew when the time came for us to go to our next spot I wouldn’t want to leave. We’d only been here for a few weeks but I wanted to stay here forever. The first week I got sh
Jasper Emery hadn’t left my mind since the day in the hospital. She had looked so broken .. and when she accused me of having another woman.. it looked like it ripped her heart out. I didn’t even deny it I just stood there … shocked. And I hated it. I know I had hurt her .. in more ways than one. And I didn’t like to be the cause of her pain. I remembered the box I kept upstairs in the back of my closet. It had a lot of different things in it that I’d collected over the years .. but it also housed several gifts Emery had given me. Most of them were very heartfelt gifts that she had put a lot of time into. I’d barely even ever looked at them or taken them out of their bags. One thing she had made me was a picture of us together.. she’d gotten it enlarged and put in a frame. Another gift had been a name plate for my desk. She’d gotten the tools and engraved it herself. And I’d left it up there in that box all these years. Another year for my birthday she’d attempted to knit me a
