Early morning.

Elena woke up slowly in her room. The curtains were half-open, and soft light was falling across the huge room. For a few seconds, she just lay there, looking up.This ceiling. This bed. This quiet. She was still not used to it.

She sat up, slipped her feet into the soft slippers by the bed, and wrapped her silk robe around herself. She walked to the railing upstairs and looked down.

The house was beautiful in the morning.Sunlight through the high windows, falling on marble. The chandelier catching light even when it was off. Everything clean, calm, perfect . And she lived here now.

She came down the stairs slowly, one hand on the railing, taking it all in.And then she saw him.

Adrian was in the breakfast nook, not the big formal dining. He was dressed in a black shirt, sleeves folded to his elbows, a grey vest. He sat relaxed but perfect, one leg crossed, a cup of coffee in one hand, reading something on his tablet with the other.

Elena stopped. She didn't rush to him. She stayed a few feet away, and cleared her throat softly.

"Good morning... Adrian."

He looked up. And when he saw her, his serious morning face softened just for a second.

"Morning," he said, his voice low "Slept well?"

She nodded quickly, hands holding her robe tighter. "Yes,Thank you."

He gave her a small smile. "Good."

Then his phone buzzed,He glanced at it. His expression changed back to business. He stood "I have to go. Early board call."

"Oh," Elena said, a little disappointed but trying to hide it. "Okay."

He was already putting on his suit jacket that hung on the chair.

"Eat something. Mrs. Lane made breakfast," he said as he walked away "We'll talk tonight."

"Okay. Have a good day," she said to his back."Farewell," she added quieter when he was already at the door.

The Front door closed.

Elena stood there for a second, she let out a small sigh and walked to the table. The breakfast was laid out. Toast, eggs, fruits, coffee, still warm under silver lids. They were half-finished.She stared at it.

That's when Mrs. Lane walked in from the kitchen Mrs. Lane, the chef. The only staff inside the house now. Hair tied back, apron on, coming to clear Adrian dishes and stopped dead when she saw Elena standing by the breakfast table.

"Oh Miss Laurent, good morning, Ma'am. I didn't hear you come down. I'm sorry, I thought — I thought Mr. Adrian was still —"

Elena smiled a little. "He just left."

Mrs. Lane nodded, eyes down, hands clasped tight. She didn't know where to look. This girl who used to mop this same dining floor now stood here in a silk robe, the owner of the table.

"I will clear this and bring you fresh tea," she said quickly, reaching for his plate.

"Mrs. Lane."Elena stopped her

Mrs. Lane kept her eyes down, hands tight around the plate."Yes, Ma'am."

Elena frowned softly. "You don't have to do that."

Mrs. Lane shook her head quickly. "Ma'am, I have to. You are now the owner of this house. I can't treat you like... like someone I know.Itd wouldn't be right I have to respect ..."

Elena looked at her really looked at her."How did you treat me before?"

Mrs. Lane's lips trembled "I know, dear. But things are different now."

"They are," Elena said. "But you are not different to me.Please. Sit. Just for a minute."

"I shouldn't, Ma'am .."

"Please. For me."

After a hesitation, Mrs. Lane sat, perched on the edge of the chair, hands in her lap.

Elena sat too and took Mrs. Lane's rough, warm hand

"When I was a maid here, you were the only person who saw me...you were the kindest person to meYou would call me 'dear.' You would save me food. When Vivian shouted, you would tell me 'go to the kitchen, pretend you are helping me.' You were kind when you didn't have to be. You were the only mother I had "

Mrs. Lane wiped her eye quickly. "You were just a little girl. I couldn't... I couldn't watch them be so hard on you."

"You didn't have to be kind. But you were," Elena said. "And I never forgot."

She squeezed her hand tighter.

Elena took a breath."Now everything has changed. I own this house. But I don't know how to run a house this big. I don't know how many staffs we need, what to buy, who to trust. I need someone I can trust. That's why I want you to stay and not just as a chef."

Mrs. Lane blinked. "What do you mean?"

"I want you to handle this whole house. Everything."Get more staff. Good people. People who know how to work Interview them yourself. Bring them to me.I will trust your choice I don't want this house to be quiet and cold like a museum. I want it to feel alive."

Mrs. Lane stared. "Me? Elena, I... I'm just a cook. I'm not trained to —"

"You are trained to care," Elena said simply. "That's the only training And that's you."

A tear finally slipped down Mrs. Lane's cheek. She didn't hide it this time.

"You... you would trust me with that?"

"With everything This is my first decision as the lady of this house. And my decision is you I won't change on you I promise"

Mrs. Lane let out a small laugh through her tears and finally held Elena's hand properly

"If you trust me like that... I will not let you down," she said, voice shaking. "I will make this house feel like a home for you. I promise."

Elena's eyes watered and she laughed a little.

"Thank you. Because I really don't want to live in a museum. I want to live in a home."

For the next few days, Elena continued her lessons. Business, speech, etiquette. She took everything seriously. She was getting better every day, more confident.

Then one morning, Adrian told her, "There is a Laurent Gala this week. You will be introduced."

Elena didn't panic. She just nodded. "Okay. I will be ready."

####

It was Gala Day.

By evening, Elena was ready. Long elegant black dress. Hair packed up neatly, light makeup, small earrings. She looked calm and classy.

When she came downstairs, Adrian was waiting in his maroon suit.

He looked up. "You look good."

Elena smiled. "Thank you."

He offered his arm. "Shall we?"

She took it. Back straight, Steps steady.

When they arrived at the hall, the place was lit up. Expensive cars,Rich people cameras flashing at the entrance. Adrian stepped out first, then held out his hand for her.

Together they walked in. People turned to look at the beautiful lady beside Adrian Laurent.

Inside, soft music, crystal lights, round tables. Adrian kept his hand lightly at Elena's back.

"This is Elena Laurent," he said to people. "Our family."

Elena smiled politely. "Nice to meet you."

She was doing well.

Then Adrian's phone buzzed.

"Sorry, I need to take this. Just a minute. Stay here, okay?"

"Okay," Elena said.

He stepped away to a quiet corner.

Elena stood alone near the table, holding her small purse.

That's when she heard them.

"Well, well, well. Look who sneaked in."

Elena turned.

Vivian and Chloe. Vivian in a deep red gown, Chloe in a tight pink dress, both holding wine.

The moment Elena saw them, her chest tightened. Her hand tightened around her purse. She was scared. Old fear from the kitchen came back. But she didn't show it. She remembered her teacher's voice

Back straight.

Eyes up.

She kept her back straight and her face calm.

Chloe walked closer, looking her up and down with disgust.

"Do you even know how to stand in a place like this? This is not the servants' quarters, you know. Did you come to clean the tables?"

Vivian smiled, but her eyes were cold. She stepped closer and whispered her voice was sharp like a threat.

"Elena, dear. Enjoy this dress while it lasts. Tomorrow you will be back in your uniform. I will make sure of it. You will soon leave the Laurent house for good this time. You will never be one of us. Do you understand?"

A few people nearby started looking and whispering.

Elena's heart was beating very fast. She wanted to step back but she took a quiet breath.

Then she looked at Vivian, straight in the eyes, calm and respectful.

"Auntie Vivian," she said clearly. "Yes, I was a maid in your house. I swept your floors and served your food. You know that. But I am my father's daughter. By blood, I am a Laurent. You married into this name. I was born into it. So tell me, who really belongs here and who will have to leave?"

Vivian's smile vanished. Her eyes narrowed. Her grip on her wine glass tightened.

Chloe cut in angry that Elena wasn't shaking.

"Don't talk to my mother like that!" Chloe snapped. "Let me tell you something, Elena. You think because Adrian brought you here you are important? You will soon leave this family. You will be thrown out, just like before! A maid will always be a maid!"

Elena turned to Chloe slowly. Her voice was still calm.

"Chloe," she said. "You always told me maids don't deserve to sit at the table. You threw your shoes at me to clean every morning. Now you are telling me I will leave? I already left your kitchen, Chloe. I am standing here as the heiress of this family. If a maid can become what you are desperate to be, what does that say about you?"

Chloe's face turned red with anger and shame.

"You are nothing!" Chloe shouted, losing control. "You are nothing without Adrian! You think wearing a black dress makes you an heiress?"

Elena gave a small, firm smile.

"If I am nothing, why are you shouting? People who are something don't need to shout to prove it. You taught me that, Chloe. In the kitchen."

"You little bitch!" Chloe lost it completely and raised her hand to slap her hard.

But before her hand could touch Elena, two securities rushed in and grabbed Chloe and Vivian by the arms.

"Leave me! Do you know who I am? I'm a Laurent!" Chloe screamed.

Vivian shouted, "How dare you touch us!"

Adrian was already there. He had finished his call and came back quickly. His face was shocked by the appearance of his mom and sister

He looked at Vivian. "Mom. Enough."

Vivian stared at him, shocked. "Adrian? You are letting them hold your own mother? For her?"

Adrian didn't answer her. He just said to the Security"Take them outside."

The guards dragged Vivian and Chloe away while the whole hall watched in shock.

Elena stood there. Her hands were shaking but her head was high. She was breathing fast, but she held her ground.

She had spoken back. And she had won.

Adrian turned to her immediately.

"Elena."

He took her hand gently. It was cold.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly, so only she could hear. "I shouldn't have left you alone."

Elena shook her head. "It's okay."

"No, it's not okay," Adrian said, his voice low and serious. "They had no right to speak to you like that."

He looked into her eyes. "Are you okay? Did she hurt you?"

Elena took a deep breath. "I'm okay. Just... a little shocked."

Adrian nodded and squeezed her hand lightly. "You handled it so well. You were brave."

Elena finally gave a small smile. "I was scared."

"I know," he said. "But you didn't run. You stood. I'm proud of you."

He guided her to a quieter corner and gave her a glass of water. "Drink. Breathe. We can leave if you want."

She drank a little and shook her head. "No. I want to stay. This is my night, right?"

Adrian smiled "Yes. Your night."

Just then, the music stopped. The lights dimmed.

The MC stepped onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for being here tonight for the Laurent family annual gala."

People clapped.

"Tonight is a very special night for the Laurent family. For many years, there was a missing piece. Tonight, that piece is home."

He looked towards Elena.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to officially introduce to you, the true heiress, the blood daughter of the late Mr. Laurent

Miss Elena Laurent!"

The spotlight turned to her.

Adrian took her hand. "Come."

He walked with her to the stage. Her long black dress flowed. Her back straight, her chin up. Every step elegant.

The whole hall clapped.

The MC handed her the mic.

Elena held it, looking at hundreds of eyes on her. For a second she felt dizzy, but she calmed herself and spoke, clear and calm.

"Good evening. My name is Elena Laurent. Thank you for welcoming me home."

The hall erupted in louder applause.

Adrian stood beside her, watching her, his eyes soft.

"You did perfect," he whispered as she stepped down.

"Thank you," she whispered back, her legs shaking a little.

Immediately, people came to her. "Congratulations, Miss Laurent.Welcome back, heiress. You look so much like your father."

Elena greeted them one by one. "Thank you. Thank you for coming."

While she was talking to an older couple, she heard a familiar kind voice.

"There she is, our shining star."

Attorney Robert. In his suit, smiling proudly.

"Attorney Robert," Elena said, happy to see him.

"My dear, you were wonderful on stage," he said. "Your father would be so proud."

"Thank you, sir."

Robert chuckled. "I told you to stop calling me sir. And look, I brought someone who has been begging to meet you."

He turned to his side.

"This is my son, Alexander Robert."

Elena looked up.

And for a second, she forgot how to breathe.

Alexander Robert was tall, taller than Adrian. Broad shoulders, perfect in a tailored black suit that fit him like it was made only for him. His hair was dark, neatly brushed back, a few strands falling over his forehead. His face was handsome in a very soft way sharp jawline, straight nose, but warm brown eyes and lips that were already smiling at her. A charming, effortless kind of handsome.

He smiled, and it was the kind of smile that made girls forget their names.

"Finally," he said. His voice was smooth, deep, warm, like honey. "The famous Elena."

He stepped forward, unhurried, confident, and took her hand gently. His hand was large, warm, and soft. He didn't shake it. He held it, like something precious.

"My father talks about you every day," he said, looking straight into her eyes. His eyes didn't leave hers. "He said you were beautiful, but he didn't say you were THIS beautiful. He lied to me."

Elena blushed instantly. Her cheeks turned pink.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Alexander's smile deepened. He tilted his head slightly, still holding her hand, his thumb brushing ever so lightly against the back of her hand a small, smooth, intimate gesture.

"You have very soft hands," he said quietly, only for her to hear. "And very beautiful eyes. I can't stop looking."

Elena didn't know what to say. Her heart was beating fast.

"I hope we can be friends," he continued, his voice smooth and teasing. "Or more than friends. I would love to take you to dinner sometime. To properly welcome you home. Just you and me."

He kept holding her hand.

Right beside her, Adrian was standing.

At first he was calm, but as Alexander kept holding her hand and looking at her like that, Adrian's face started to change.

He looked at their joined hands.

His jaw tightened a little.

He put his hands into his pockets, but inside his pockets, his fingers curled tight into fists.

His eyes went from Alexander's charming smile, to Elena's blushing face, then back to their hands.

He shifted his weight, stepping a little closer to Elena, his shoulder almost touching hers now, his chest almost brushing her arm.

Adrian cleared his throat lightly.

Alexander finally, very slowly, let go of her hand, but his eyes were still on her, still smiling that smooth smile.

"Think about my dinner invitation, Miss Elena," Alexander said, and then he winked at her slow, confident, charming. "I'll be waiting."

He turned and walked away with his father, hands in his pockets, easy and graceful.

Elena smiled shyly.

But as soon as Alexander turned, Adrian moved immediately. Without a word, he stepped between Elena and the direction Alexander had left, his back to Alexander, blocking him completely from Elena's view.

Then he looked down at Elena, his voice a little lower than usual, a little tighter.

"Are you cold?" he asked.

Elena shook her head, still a little flushed. "No."

Adrian didn't seem convinced. He took off his maroon suit jacket and placed it gently around her shoulders, even though it wasn't cold at all.

"Keep it on," he said quietly. His hand lingered on her shoulder for a second. "There are too many eyes here tonight."

He looked around the hall once, his eyes dark, then back at her.

"Stay close to me, Elena. Don't go anywhere alone, okay?"

Elena looked up at him, surprised by how serious he sounded, and nodded. "Okay."

Adrian's hand slid down from her shoulder to lightly hold her wrist, guiding her away from the crowd, holding her a little closer than before.

The gala finally ended.

It was late. The cars were lined up outside.

Elena was tired, her feet hurt from her heels, but she was happy. She kept replaying everything in her head the announcement, the people clapping, Alexander.

Adrian opened the car door for her.

"Get in," he said.

Elena entered, Adrian sat beside her in the back seat. The driver started driving.

Inside the car, it was quiet.

Adrian wasn't talking. He was looking out the window, one hand on his knee, the other resting near Elena but not touching.

Elena looked at him.

"Adrian?" she called softly.

He hummed. "Hmm?"

"You are quiet."

"I'm just tired," he said, still looking out.

Elena thought he was tired from handling the gala, from handling his mother and sister, from handling so many people.

She leaned back and stayed quiet too, looking out her own window. The city lights passed by.

When they reached the house, the driver opened the door.

Elena came out first, then Adrian.

They walked inside together. The house was quiet.

Elena was about to go upstairs to her room.

"Good night, Adrian," she said. "Thank you for today. For everything."

Adrian stood at the stairs, hands in his pockets, watching her.

"Elena," he called.

She turned. "Yes?"

He looked at her for a few seconds, his face still calm but serious.

"Be ready," he said. "You will be joining the company tomorrow."

Elena's eyes widened. "Tomorrow? So soon?"

"Yes," he said. "No more staying at home. You are the heiress now. You need to be there."

He paused, then added in a lower voice.

"And stay away from... distractions. Focus on work."

Elena nodded quickly. "Okay, I will. I will be ready early."

Adrian nodded. "Good night."

"Good night," Elena said, and went up to her room, still thinking he was just stressed from work.

But Adrian stood downstairs for a long time after she left, still with his hands in his pockets, staring at the door.
