Chapter 3

Author: Echo
My cheek swelled up instantly. The handprint burned like fire.

I narrowed my eyes at the cleaner, but I had absolutely no idea who she was.

Cradling my burning cheek, I glared at her coldly. "My name is not Veronica! If you don't apologize and compensate me immediately, my legal team will bury you!"

But the cleaner started wailing like she was putting on an Oscar-winning performance.

"God forgive me! Why did I give birth to such a curse!"

"She won't even recognize her own mother just to pull off a scam!"

"Miss Caroline, Mr. Matthew, I apologize. I failed to raise this shameless daughter properly."

"Punish her however you want. I won't stop you. Maybe it'll keep her from conning anyone else!"

The cleaner—Martha's—words sent a gasp through the room.

"This woman is a high-level con artist?"

"Even her own mother says so. It’s gotta be true!"

"Thank God she stepped in, or we all would have been fooled!"

Caroline ground her teeth and glared at me.

"You think playing me is funny?"

"Guards, throw the snake on her. I want her begging for death!"

Catching the sinister gleam of victory in Martha and Matthew's eyes, I yelled back.

"I'm not lying! This woman is acting! My name is not Veronica either."

"I'm Valerie. She can't even get my real name right, how could she be my mother?"

Caroline finally noticed that the name on the diploma was indeed Valerie.

Seeing her waver, Matthew quickly stepped up to cover his tracks.

"How could a mother not know her own kid? She IS Veronica!"

"She even forged a Yale degree to trick you."

"It's just a name! She’s probably scammed so many people she legally changed it to avoid getting clipped!"

I reacted instantly. "Run a background check. You're the Cassano princess; finding my real identity should be a breeze. My name is Valerie, I graduated from Yale, and I am not the con artist she claims I am!"

Skeptical, Caroline made a quick call to her tech guys. She got her answer quickly.

My name was indeed Valerie.

But facing Caroline's icy stare, Martha cried her eyes out, swearing she was my biological mother.

"Valerie, I divorced your gambling addict of a father when you were three to raise you all by myself."

"You can't just change your name and disown your own mother because that bastard promised you money!"

"He's lying to you! Mommy is the only one who truly loves you!"

Martha wept, producing a notarized DNA test to prove she was my biological mother.

Looking at her face, it finally clicked.

I remembered her. She was my birth mother, but she had the story twisted—she was the gambling addict.

Because of her massive debts, she even tried to sell me to her loan sharks when I was a kid.

My dad couldn't take her abuse anymore. He packed me up and fled in the middle of the night, cutting her out of our lives for good.

We didn't have a single picture of her in our house, which was why I couldn't recognize her.

But no one believed my explanation.

Even the Don, who had been silent, stood up with a cold look.

"Miss Valerie, I want to believe you."

"But your mother has been cleaning for my family for twenty years. Her word holds more weight than yours, doesn't it?"

"I will not allow a lying woman who tried to wreck my daughter's marriage to walk out of New York alive."

Raising his hand, the Don gave a ruthless order.

"Strip her naked and dump her in the red-light district. Let her work as the cheapest streetwalker on the block!"

As the guards grabbed me, my eyes locked onto Caroline, and everything clicked. I forcefully shook off the guards.

"Don! I know who Matthew is sleeping with!"

The next day, Don Cassano walked into my hospital room alone. He handed me a blank check, his face plastered with a fake, slimy smile—a complete 180 from his arrogance the night before."It was all a misunderstanding. I listened to the wrong people, almost ruined our relationship.""Just a little token of my apology, Consigliere Valerie. Fill in whatever number makes you happy."I spun the check in my fingers and raised an eyebrow."The Don is feeling generous. Is this really just an apology?"The Don chuckled awkwardly. The greedy glint returning to his eyes, he laid out his real motive."In three days, the Visconti family is announcing their New York partner.""I know Julian has a problem with me, so... I was hoping Consigliere Valerie could do me a favor."I instantly knew what he wanted. He wanted me to bypass Julian and hand the contract directly to him.Looking at the check, I didn't give him a straight answer. Instead, I gave him a slow, calculating smile."Don, as long as Julia

A birthmark the real Caroline never had.Don Cassano stared at that birthmark, his voice trembling."Who are you? My daughter doesn't have any birthmarks... Where is my daughter?!"Realizing she was exposed, the imposter started shaking violently. Clutching her neck, she tried to bluff her way out."Dad, what are you talking about? It's me, Caroline!""This is just a burn scar from a few days ago!""This bitch is disrespecting me, shoot her!""Still lying?" I sneered, shattering her delusion on the spot."The real Caroline is dead! You're just a rat who took her place!""Don, if you don't believe me, ask her a few personal questions only the real princess would know!"Raw panic flashed in the Don's eyes. After a beat of dead silence, he shoved his gun against the imposter's temple."What is my daughter's favorite color?""How old was she when she made her first million?""What seafood is she allergic to?"The fake princess couldn't answer a single one. She looked desperately at Matthew

Caroline's eyes were full of psychotic malice. On her own turf, she thought she was a god.Julian shook his head, realizing this entire family was a pack of rabid dogs.He bent down, picked me up, and turned to leave, only to be blocked by a dozen guards.Staring at the barrels of their guns, Julian frowned and glared at the Don."What is the meaning of this?"The Don flicked the ash off his cigar, smiling darkly."I think my daughter makes a good point.""Even a mighty dragon can't crush a local snake. This is New York. Since you want to do this the hard way, I'll just help the Viscontis pick a more cooperative representative."The Don slammed a partnership contract on the table, forcing an ultimatum."Sign it, and partner with me.""Then let my daughter skin this bitch alive.""From now on, in the New York underworld, if I eat steak, you'll get soup.""Or tomorrow, two nameless bodies covered in snake bites will wash up in the Hudson!"With a snap of his fingers, the glass tank holdi

My eyes lit up. We had met at headquarters. He could save me.I was about to shout, but Matthew clamped his hand hard over my mouth, whispering: "Shut your mouth. I know what you're doing. Trying to call for help? Not on my watch."Julian scanned the room, looking slightly confused. "Strange. Why don't I see...""Julian!" Taking the chance, I bit Matthew's hand as hard as I could and screamed when he flinched.Julian finally spotted me in the corner, half-shoved into the python cage. His face paled. He shoved through the crowd like a battering ram, drew his weapon, and stepped in front of me."Consigliere Valerie!"The Don turned ghost-white. Scrambling to draw his gun, he fired twice, killing the lunging python on the spot.Still, the python's death thrash knocked Julian to the marble floor, leaving a bloody gash across his arm.The Don rushed his private doctor over, but Julian barked, "Check on Valerie first!"The Don looked utterly baffled. "Julian, my friend, she’s just a con arti

"It's her!"All eyes followed my finger.Seeing me point dead at Caroline, they looked at me like I was insane.Even Caroline herself laughed out of sheer anger."Valerie, do you even hear yourself?""I'm Matthew's wife! I'm having an affair with him? Is your brain damaged?"The Don looked at me with deep impatience."If I knew you were this stupid and crazy, I would have just put a bullet in you.""Drag her down to the fighting pit! I'm treating my VIPs to a bloody man-vs-snake show!"Following his brutal order, the guards pinned me down and dragged me toward the pit.I fought like hell, trying to explain, but they violently gagged me.Right as they dragged me toward the doors, I used every ounce of strength to rip the hidden pocket of my dress. A metal pin hit the marble floor with a sharp clink. The guards took one look at it, turned pale, and immediately let me go. Shaking, they handed it to Don Cassano: "Don, look at this!"Don Cassano obviously recognized the crest of the Viscont
