Chapter 4

Autor: Zoey
Vincent’s study was locked year-round, and no one was allowed inside except him. To me, however, that kind of old-fashioned mechanical lock was no different from a toy.

I walked up to the lock, my fingers moving quickly as I spun the combination dial a few times. With a click, the door swung open.

I glanced inside and saw important documents like the company’s stock equity certificates. Aside from those, there was an entire drawer packed with letters. They were all written by Vincent to Evelyn Mancini.

I pulled one out at random. On the yellowed paper was his familiar handwriting.

“Evelyn, our son is doing great, so please don’t worry. I’ll make sure Selena and Grace never mistreat him.

“Liam can say ‘Daddy’ now. When he’s a bit older, I’ll tell him that you’re his real mother.

“Once the situation in the company stabilizes, I will transfer all the shares under Liam’s name. Everything I have should belong to our son anyway.”

As I read through them one by one, I felt sick to my stomach. So Liam wasn’t an adopted son after all; he was Vincent’s biological son.

My years of sacrifice were nothing more than a free servant’s work in his eyes. From the start, he had never intended to give a thing to our daughter or me.

I leaned against the edge of the desk, forcing down the disgust rising inside me. For all our time together in this life and the last, I had hidden my edge and concealed my true identity, only to be scammed in return.

I picked up the letters and slowly tore them into pieces when suddenly, the study door was slammed open. Vincent stood at the door. When he saw the floor covered in a total mess, he scowled.

“Selena, how dare you touch my things? Have you lost your mind”

He strode inside, his brow furrowed tightly as he shouted, “Why are you still standing there? Get back and take care of Liam already!”

I stood rooted to the spot, the last letter still in my hand.

Looking at him, I smiled. Then, under his furious gaze, I raised my hands and tore the final letter. The shredded paper drifted slowly from my fingertips.

“Vincent Rossi,” My voice was light, but I made myself loud and clear. “You’re talking about me having lost my mind? Of everything you own today, is there anything you actually earned yourself?”

He froze, his eyes widening in shock. “What nonsense are you talking about? I built this empire from scratch with my bare hands. How is it not mine? Selena, I think you’ve truly gone mad.”

I ignored him entirely. Instead, I pressed the button on the desk intercom and said, “Go now.”

A voice on the other end answered, “Understood,” before the line went dead.

Before Vincent could demand an explanation, his phone began ringing.

He picked up the call, and after a few seconds, he raised his voice, “What? The cargo at the port has been impounded? Customs and Border Control issued the order directly? How can that be?”

The moment he hung up, a second call came in.

“The bank froze all of our accounts? The risk department received orders from above?”

With a thud, the phone slipped out of his hand and fell onto the carpet, its screen shattering into a spiderweb of cracks. He stumbled backward and slumped limply against the bookshelf in utter defeat.

I pulled a necklace out from my collar. The pendant was a family crest featuring a gold rose set against a black background.

“Let me introduce myself. I’m Selena Capelli.” Leaning back against the desk, I stated my name calmly. “That is my real name, and I am the daughter of the Capelli mafia family.”

Grace slowly opened her eyes and asked in a small voice, “Mommy, what about Daddy?”“He won’t ever bother us again,” I replied, gently caressing her head. “It’s all in the past now.”She nodded, as if she sort of understood, and leaned back into my arms. When we returned to the apartment, Leo was already waiting for me.“Principessa, everything has been taken care of,” Leo said. “Vincent has been turned over to the police, along with all the evidence. He won’t get off lightly. Also, regarding the true background of Evelyn and Liam, do you want me to look into it?”I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head. “There’s no need. Evelyn is already dead, so digging into her past is meaningless. As for Liam…”I sighed softly. “He’s a victim in all this too. Just find out who his biological father is. If the man is willing to raise him, send Liam over. If not, contact a social worker and find him a good family to adopt him.”“Understood.”A few days later, Leo tracked down Lia

The Rossi Group collapsed, and the news was flooded with reports of its bankruptcy and liquidation. However, Vincent seemed to have vanished into thin air, and no one could find him anywhere.Leo sent a team of people to search every place Vincent could possibly be, but found no trace of him. Vincent’s phone was off, his bank cards were frozen, and even his old drinking buddies had no idea where he had gone.An uneasy feeling crept up in me. Vincent wasn’t the type to give up easily. When driven to a dead end, he was capable of doing anything.“Step up the security around the apartment,” I told Leo.“Yes, Principessa. I’ve done it.” Leo paused for a moment. “Principessa, do you suspect Vincent might go after your daughter?”“It never hurts to be careful,” I replied flatly. “He has nothing left now. If he wants to turn the tables, targeting Grace is his only move.”“Understood. I’ll send more men.”However, Vincent didn’t go after Grace; he came straight for me.That afternoon,

The next morning, when Grace woke up, she looked a little lost. She sat on the soft, spacious bed and looked around the unfamiliar room with her wide, round eyes. It took her a good while before she finally turned to me and asked, “Mommy, are we never going back?”“Yes.” I set breakfast on the nightstand, smiled, and patted her head as I said, “From now on, this will be our home.”“Awesome!”Grace bounced up instantly, then quickly covered her mouth and giggled secretly, as if afraid of being too loud. Seeing how happy she was, I felt everything had been worth it.After accompanying Grace through breakfast, I had the housekeeper take her downstairs to play in the garden while I went to the study.Leo Costa was already sitting inside. My father had appointed him to me, and he had been with me for many years. All those times I secretly paved the way for Vincent, Leo was the one executing the orders.“Principessa.” Leo stood up and gave me a slight nod.“Sit.” I walked behind the

He stumbled forward, reaching out to grab my arm, but two bodyguards immediately stepped in, pinning him firmly in place.“Selena!” he shouted my name, his eyes bloodshot and his voice filled with a panic I had never heard from him before. “You can’t do this! The Rossi Group is my life’s work! You can’t just destroy it!”“Your life’s work?” I raised an eyebrow at him. “Vincent, you know deep down that everything in the Rossi Group came from the Capelli family. The seed capital was mine, the connections belonged to my family, and the distribution channels were provided by my father. Your so-called ‘self-made’ success was nothing more than climbing up on the shoulders of the Capelli family.”I hurled the documents at his feet, sending the papers scattering across the floor.“Now, I’m simply taking back what’s mine.”He stared at the documents on the ground before looking up at me, a desperate plea slowly creeping into his eyes.“Selena, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have said those thin

Vincent slumped weakly against the bookshelf, the color draining from his face. He stared at the black-and-gold rose pendant around my neck, his eyes filled with shock, disbelief, and a flicker of fear he hadn’t even noticed himself.“Capelli…”He repeated the name over and over, as if trying to carve the name into his memory.“You’re… a Capelli?”In New Haven, everybody knew the Capelli family.Having dominated the city’s underworld for nearly a century, the family was the uncrowned king operating in a legal gray area; even members of Congress treated lightly around them.In all his years of striving, Vincent had heard countless legends about the Capelli family and had tried innumerable times to strike up a connection with them. However, never in his wildest dreams did he think that the wife he had shared a bed with was actually the daughter of the Capelli family. My fingertips stroked the cold gold rose on my pendant as I watched him, looking completely lost.“Who else did yo
