Chapter 3

Author: The Awakened
My mood shifted from gloomy to bright, and the corners of my lips lifted before I even realized it.

Elias continued to awkwardly tap at the screen with his paws. "I don't know why I turned into this, either. I don't have anywhere to go right now. Can you take me in for a while?"

I was just about to agree when I suddenly remembered the comments I'd seen. Once he turned back into a human, the first person he would kill was me. My mood tanked again.

"Isn't Maisie your favorite?" I let out a mocking laugh. "She'd be thrilled to have you. I can send you over to her place right now."

Elias panicked and started running in circles, his paws frantically tapping on the phone. "That's nonsense! I don't like her! The person I like is…"

"Who is it?" I narrowed my eyes at him.

He instantly chickened out, covering his face with his two front paws and peeking at me through his toes, looking utterly diffident.

Ha! He still wouldn't admit it?

I mimicked his lofty tone from back then, dripping with sarcasm. "Didn't you say back then that if anyone dared to touch a hair on Maisie's head, you would wipe out their entire family? That was such a big, scary threat that you made, Mr. Forrest."

For the first time in my life, I saw vivid embarrassment in a dog's eyes.

Elias' fluffy ears drooped. He lowered his head in defeat and poked at the phone screen with his paw. "I don't know what was wrong with me, either. It was like I was possessed during that time…"

I let out a cold snort. But when I calmed down and thought about it, it really was bizarre. Elias had acted like a totally different person after meeting Maisie.

The first time they'd met, he'd forced her to kneel and apologize. He even kept calling her a lowborn. After that, it turned into that classic cliche of her running and him chasing. It was exactly like a story of the domineering CEO who took what he wanted meeting a pure, unyielding, innocent young woman.

The most ridiculous part was that after Mr. and Mrs. Forrest found out, they had a few words with Maisie. Elias completely blew up, convinced his parents were trying to break them up. He even threatened to cut ties with them.

They were so upset that they rushed over to my house in the middle of the night and complained to my parents until 3:00 am.

Elias struggled to keep typing. "Maisie suddenly showed up in my room right after someone had drugged me. If I hadn't snapped out of it at the last second and broken free long enough to run out, I would've lost my virginity!"

"So you ran into my room?" I blurted out before I could stop myself.

He nodded.

The two of us fell into an awkward silence.

I remembered the scene of Elias barging into my room, saying nothing before pinning me against the wall and kissing me. My cheeks instantly burned. When I looked at Elias, I found him so embarrassed that he already had his face buried in his paws.

"Elias Forrest!" I grabbed him, grinding my teeth.

After giving him a good thrashing, I flopped onto the couch to sort through my thoughts. Judging from the barrage of comments, it seemed like we were living inside some domineering-CEO romance novel, and Elias and Maisie were the male and female leads.

But looking at Elias' reaction now, he was clearly just as clueless as I was. Every source of weirdness pointed straight at Maisie…

I glanced down at the snow-white ball of fluff in my arms. Sending him home was obviously out of the question. If Mrs. Forrest saw her son like this, she would probably faint on the spot. So, I could only call the Forrests and tell them Elias would be staying at my place for a few days.

"Of course! He can stay for as long as he wants!" Mrs. Forrest sounded overjoyed on the other end of the line. "He doesn't even have to come home! Willow, I'm really counting on you to deal with that brat."

After hanging up, I prodded Elias' damp black nose and taunted him, "See how unwanted you are? Your parents were practically begging you not to go home."

He immediately let out an aggrieved whine. His two front paws clung to my wrist, and his fluffy head kept nuzzling into my palm.

God, help me. Who on earth could resist this? Of all things, my biggest weakness was soft, fluffy animals.

Damn it! I forced myself to hold back the urge to pet him and set him down instead. No way was I letting him enjoy himself.

I said briskly, "I'm going to work. You stay home and behave."

I'd just stood up when Elias leapt into my arms. He clung tightly to my blazer, his dark eyes shining.

He barked, as if saying, "I want to go, too!"

I pulled some strings and had Maisie moved to a specially equipped private cell.Right in front of me, she gathered Elias into her arms and walked into the cell, holding him close. She shot me a smug, almost pitying look. "Looks like I'm the one who wins in the end."The door slammed shut.Soon, I heard a woman's muffled moans from inside. I stood in the hallway with my fingers digging into my palms. My mind flooded with a thousand indecent scenes I didn't want to imagine. A bitter laugh slipped from my throat.Just then, the door suddenly swung open. Elias stepped out, back to his normal self. His clothes were a mess, and there was a feverish glint in his eyes that didn't look right. My heart twisted sharply."Did you two—"Before I could finish, things went awry. Elias shoved me down onto the couch, his scorching breath fanning over my neck. His long arms locked around me, holding me so tight that I couldn't move."Willow, I feel awful. Help me, please?" he rasped. My cheeks

The comments were already starting to mourn my death. At that critical moment, dozens of fully armed SWAT officers kicked down the door. "Drop your weapon!"Behind them, a sea of reporters crowded the doorway, cameras and mics all pointed inside.Maisie froze where she was. I pulled my hand free from the ropes I'd managed to loosen and took a pinhole camera out of my earring."You know what?" I leaned in and murmured into her ear, "I made a big show of investigating you on purpose. I was baiting you."Maisie's eyes widened, and her finger tightened on the trigger. "What, you think I wouldn't dare kill you? You think those people outside can stop me?""As a top-tier Challenger, you must be carrying a ton of items. If you wanted to, I'm sure you could kill everyone in this room, let alone little old me. But instead of doing anything, you'd rather stand here arguing with me."So I'm guessing… you can't use your powers or items that completely break this world's rules in front of th

I put my phone down when Elias still didn't reply, planning to close my eyes and rest for a bit. That was when I realized the car seemed to be taking the wrong route. The comments suddenly flooded my vision.[Willow, jump out of the car!][Maisie found out you were investigating her. She's going to make a move on you!][We were banned earlier and couldn't warn you at all!]I shot upright, but it was already too late. A faint, sweet scent wafted into my nostrils. I was one step too late……When I came to again, my head was pounding, heavy, and foggy. I forced my eyes open.[Willow, you're finally awake… but it's too late.]The comments popped up, all talking over one another. They told me everything.Maisie had noticed the people I'd sent to investigate her, and Elias had been acting strange lately, too. On the surface, he was still utterly devoted to Maisie, but in reality he'd been avoiding her, whether intentionally or coincidentally.Because of that, Maisie's conquest mis

I spat, "I've been top of my class since I was a kid! I skipped grades and finished my PhD at 18 years old. I took over the family business at 23 years old, and every year I donate tens of millions of dollars to charity. What right do you have to say I don't work hard and that I'm vicious?"You think hiding behind a screen and clacking away on your keyboard makes you so great? Your brains are filled with nothing but fluffy romance. You don't even have a basic sense of right and wrong. You're the ones who are truly vicious!"My voice echoed through the empty hospital room. "You have no right to point fingers at my life!"After I vented, a strange calm settled over me. If I wasn't mistaken, the moment Elias turned back into a human, his first instinct was to shield me. It wasn't a reflex that could be faked.I pressed the call button and asked the nurse how I'd ended up in the hospital. Her eyes sparkled. "Your boyfriend brought you in!"She said that Elias was covered in blood whe

The harsh glare of white light stabbed at my eyes as I jolted awake. "Elias!"The sharp smell of disinfectant flooded my nose, and I realized I was lying in a hospital bed. Elias was sitting by my bedside, watching me. He was in a tailored suit, long fingers loosely intertwined on his knee, his expression dark and unreadable."Willow, you—"Before he could finish, I instinctively reached out to grab his hand, concern spilling out of me. "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"The second my fingers brushed his, there was a soft knock at the door. "Elias, can I come in?"Right on cue, the barrage of comments popped up again.[Maisie is here! Time for the best part—the love triangle showdown!][Maisie's loyal male lead is in position.][Elias, hurry up and slap the villainess in the face!][That's what you get for trying to steal Maisie's man. Die, you bitch!]I watched as the worry in Elias' eyes vanished, only to be replaced by that all-too-familiar chill. He yanked his hand out of

Elias' reasoning was that because he'd turned into a dog while he was with me, he had to stick to me all the time from now on, in case there was a chance he could turn back.I couldn't talk him out of it, so I had no choice but to take him to work. I left him in the break room and warned him not to run around.By the time I finished my work and remembered him again, I returned to the break room to see a whole crowd of female employees packed inside.I followed their line of sight and saw a little white fluffball standing on one hind leg on the table in the center of the room. Then, wobbling, he stretched his front paws wide like he was doing a big eagle pose. The women closest to him let out wave after wave of squeals."He's so cute!""I can't handle this. I'm literally going to pass out from how adorable he is! Someone, hold me up."I… was speechless.Soon, Elias spotted me. He let out a bark and launched himself at me, his tail wagging wildly with smug satisfaction. I didn't
