Chapter 2

Author: The Awakened
Elias and I had grown up together. Our families had been close for generations. Back then, aside from always arguing with me, he didn't have any major flaws. But when Maisie showed up, he started acting weird.

He spoke in a low, dramatic voice, pinned people against walls for no reason, and spouted cheesy, domineering CEO lines like it was his job.

"Woman, you've caught my attention."

I thought he was just hormonal, so I kindly told him to get his head checked. Instead, he decided I had ulterior motives toward him.

"The weather is getting cold. Just in time for the Knight family to go bankrupt."

I recorded that and sent it to his parents. Mr. Forrest beat some sense into Elias and immediately cut off his credit card.

I figured that would finally calm Elias down. Instead, he came to me, sneering. "Woman, you think using my parents to threaten me will make me fall in love with you? My heart belongs only to Maisie. Stop deluding yourself. If you ever dare lay a finger on her behind my back, I'll show you what true wrath looks like!"

Thinking about what I'd seen in the comments earlier made my gaze turn unfriendly as I looked at the poodle at my feet. My hand moved toward its fragile neck.

The comments instantly went on high alert.

[Is the villainess about to take advantage of the male lead while he's down and finish him off?]

[Holy crap, look at her eyes! She's gonna kill the dog!]

[Male lead, run!]

The poodle noticed me watching him and suddenly tilted his head, staring at me innocently with his big, round eyes. "Woof?"

Damn it! He was so cute!

His fluffy little tail wagged so fast behind him it was practically a helicopter rotor. The whole screen was flooded with people screaming about how adorable he was.

[Help! Where's the cold, overbearing CEO we were promised?]

[Where is morality? Where is the bottom line? Where is this dog right now?]

[This would be perfect if only we could swap the villainess out for the female lead…]

The poodle was ridiculously clingy, constantly trying to burrow into my arms. His soft white curls brushed against my neck, tickling me.

Was this really the same Elias who always had that icy, emotionless mask on? He was like a completely different dog!

The comments continued being sarcastic.

[Why are you throwing yourself at her, male lead? Open your eyes! That's the villainess!]

[He must've lost his memories after turning into a dog.]

[Once he turns back into a human and remembers everything, he's definitely going to kill her to vent!]

I grabbed the little ball of fluff by the scruff. "You're filthy, you stray. Don't rub yourself on me!"

The poodle's ears instantly dropped, and his dark eyes went misty as he stared up at me.

My lips curved into a wicked smile. "First, you need a bath."

The moment the words left my lips, the poodle turned to stone.

In the bathroom, I kept one hand on the struggling poodle and held the showerhead with the other. After a futile fight, he finally gave up and lay limply in the tub.

I scrubbed him from head to toe, making sure I didn't miss a single inch of his skin and fur. His soft white curls were plastered to his body, making him look like a classic drowned rat.

But when I tried to pull apart his hind legs to wash underneath, he absolutely refused. He clamped them shut and covered himself with both front paws.

I couldn't help laughing. "What, you can even get shy like a human?"

I froze as soon as I said that, then stared at the poodle in disbelief. "Hold on… Don't tell me you still remember who you are."

The poodle, who'd been playing dead, suddenly stiffened. He covered his eyes with his paws, guilty as sin.

A chill ran down my spine. I grabbed him by the scruff and lifted him up, bringing him closer to my face. "Elias Forrest, do you remember who you are?"

The poodle gave a tiny, slow nod.

I let go of him and buried my face in my hands. God!

Not only had I bathed Elias from head to toe, but I'd also spent the entire time roasting him to his face, assuming he'd lost his memories.

He hooked a paw in my sleeve, but I shook him off. His ears drooped, and he trotted over to the nightstand. Standing on his hind legs, he awkwardly used his paws to unlock the phone there.

A second later, I got a notification saying that I'd received a transfer of five million dollars. The note on it read, "Adoption fee."

I pulled some strings and had Maisie moved to a specially equipped private cell.Right in front of me, she gathered Elias into her arms and walked into the cell, holding him close. She shot me a smug, almost pitying look. "Looks like I'm the one who wins in the end."The door slammed shut.Soon, I heard a woman's muffled moans from inside. I stood in the hallway with my fingers digging into my palms. My mind flooded with a thousand indecent scenes I didn't want to imagine. A bitter laugh slipped from my throat.Just then, the door suddenly swung open. Elias stepped out, back to his normal self. His clothes were a mess, and there was a feverish glint in his eyes that didn't look right. My heart twisted sharply."Did you two—"Before I could finish, things went awry. Elias shoved me down onto the couch, his scorching breath fanning over my neck. His long arms locked around me, holding me so tight that I couldn't move."Willow, I feel awful. Help me, please?" he rasped. My cheeks

The comments were already starting to mourn my death. At that critical moment, dozens of fully armed SWAT officers kicked down the door. "Drop your weapon!"Behind them, a sea of reporters crowded the doorway, cameras and mics all pointed inside.Maisie froze where she was. I pulled my hand free from the ropes I'd managed to loosen and took a pinhole camera out of my earring."You know what?" I leaned in and murmured into her ear, "I made a big show of investigating you on purpose. I was baiting you."Maisie's eyes widened, and her finger tightened on the trigger. "What, you think I wouldn't dare kill you? You think those people outside can stop me?""As a top-tier Challenger, you must be carrying a ton of items. If you wanted to, I'm sure you could kill everyone in this room, let alone little old me. But instead of doing anything, you'd rather stand here arguing with me."So I'm guessing… you can't use your powers or items that completely break this world's rules in front of th

I put my phone down when Elias still didn't reply, planning to close my eyes and rest for a bit. That was when I realized the car seemed to be taking the wrong route. The comments suddenly flooded my vision.[Willow, jump out of the car!][Maisie found out you were investigating her. She's going to make a move on you!][We were banned earlier and couldn't warn you at all!]I shot upright, but it was already too late. A faint, sweet scent wafted into my nostrils. I was one step too late……When I came to again, my head was pounding, heavy, and foggy. I forced my eyes open.[Willow, you're finally awake… but it's too late.]The comments popped up, all talking over one another. They told me everything.Maisie had noticed the people I'd sent to investigate her, and Elias had been acting strange lately, too. On the surface, he was still utterly devoted to Maisie, but in reality he'd been avoiding her, whether intentionally or coincidentally.Because of that, Maisie's conquest mis

I spat, "I've been top of my class since I was a kid! I skipped grades and finished my PhD at 18 years old. I took over the family business at 23 years old, and every year I donate tens of millions of dollars to charity. What right do you have to say I don't work hard and that I'm vicious?"You think hiding behind a screen and clacking away on your keyboard makes you so great? Your brains are filled with nothing but fluffy romance. You don't even have a basic sense of right and wrong. You're the ones who are truly vicious!"My voice echoed through the empty hospital room. "You have no right to point fingers at my life!"After I vented, a strange calm settled over me. If I wasn't mistaken, the moment Elias turned back into a human, his first instinct was to shield me. It wasn't a reflex that could be faked.I pressed the call button and asked the nurse how I'd ended up in the hospital. Her eyes sparkled. "Your boyfriend brought you in!"She said that Elias was covered in blood whe

The harsh glare of white light stabbed at my eyes as I jolted awake. "Elias!"The sharp smell of disinfectant flooded my nose, and I realized I was lying in a hospital bed. Elias was sitting by my bedside, watching me. He was in a tailored suit, long fingers loosely intertwined on his knee, his expression dark and unreadable."Willow, you—"Before he could finish, I instinctively reached out to grab his hand, concern spilling out of me. "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"The second my fingers brushed his, there was a soft knock at the door. "Elias, can I come in?"Right on cue, the barrage of comments popped up again.[Maisie is here! Time for the best part—the love triangle showdown!][Maisie's loyal male lead is in position.][Elias, hurry up and slap the villainess in the face!][That's what you get for trying to steal Maisie's man. Die, you bitch!]I watched as the worry in Elias' eyes vanished, only to be replaced by that all-too-familiar chill. He yanked his hand out of

  • The Male Lead Became My Devoted Puppy   Chapter 4

Elias' reasoning was that because he'd turned into a dog while he was with me, he had to stick to me all the time from now on, in case there was a chance he could turn back.I couldn't talk him out of it, so I had no choice but to take him to work. I left him in the break room and warned him not to run around.By the time I finished my work and remembered him again, I returned to the break room to see a whole crowd of female employees packed inside.I followed their line of sight and saw a little white fluffball standing on one hind leg on the table in the center of the room. Then, wobbling, he stretched his front paws wide like he was doing a big eagle pose. The women closest to him let out wave after wave of squeals."He's so cute!""I can't handle this. I'm literally going to pass out from how adorable he is! Someone, hold me up."I… was speechless.Soon, Elias spotted me. He let out a bark and launched himself at me, his tail wagging wildly with smug satisfaction. I didn't
