Chapter 2 The Apology

Author: Twenty Springs
I had no intention of responding, and Aveline's anger boiled over. She took two steps toward me, about to slap my face.

Willow stopped her.

Her eyes were red, and her voice was hoarse. "Orson, I did go back for you that night. The fire was too intense, and we all thought you had died in there."

My fingers twitched. Watching the tears well in Willow's eyes, I found it almost ironic.

"It's pretty clear that I'm alive. I guess I should thank you for caring, Ms. Radcliff."

Willow caught the sarcasm in my voice, and the tears she'd been holding back finally spilled over.

"Orson, I know you're still angry about what happened back then. Let me explain. Even though Gareth and I got married, we were never really together. I've been waiting for you all this time..."

Willow's voice broke as she struggled to speak.

Aveline immediately stepped in front of her, glaring at me. "Enough! Orson, do you have any idea what Willow sacrificed for you?

"You started that fire, but Willow spent every last cent restoring that house. She was barely getting her business off the ground and didn't have money to spare, but she poured everything she had into rebuilding it. She even managed to talk Gareth down for you. If she hadn't, you'd have been arrested and gone to prison!"

Aveline shouted as if I'd committed some terrible crime.

The old classmates around us were glaring at me with the same anger.

Two fires had taken everything from me—my mother, and the house my parents had left behind. Yet somehow, they had only made Willow look more devoted.

I let out a quiet, bitter laugh.

"Is that so? Should I get on my knees and thank her, then? Go ahead. Ask her if she can handle that."

Aveline's eyes widened. She clearly hadn't expected that answer.

Meanwhile, Willow's face went completely pale. The next second, she dropped to her knees with a thud.

"It's all my fault, Orson. Please forgive me."

Gasps broke out around the room as everyone stared at her in disbelief.

I knew exactly why they were reacting that way.

Back then, I had always been the one who gave in. No matter how Willow treated me, I never stayed angry with her.

Even during the most stressful part of senior year, I would get up early every morning to bring Willow her favorite breakfast.

She even accused me of smashing one of Gareth's mother's keepsakes and said some cruel things to me. Yet, all it took was an apology for me to forgive her.

I was supposed to go to college with Willow. Instead, she changed my college applications.

When I confronted her, she had simply said, "I lost a bet to Gareth. Taking another year won't hurt. I'll wait for you at college."

In the end, she went to the same college as Gareth.

Willow pulled the same stunt three times. Every time she lost a bet to Gareth, my college plans were the stakes.

We fought again and again. But every time, her tears were enough to make me forgive her. And just like that, three years of my life had been wasted because of her.

By that logic, the moment Willow apologized, I should have forgiven her.

After the fire, I should have held onto her even harder. Yet now, Willow was the one kneeling in front of me.

I looked at her quietly, my expression unchanged.

Just as I was about to speak, Gareth walked out of the private room behind her.

Willow's words made Gareth go rigid. He let out an awkward laugh. "How could that be? If Orson really cared about what happened back then, he wouldn't have come after you first."Either way, I'm leaving. Don't contact me again unless Radcliff Group manages to make a comeback. Though I don't think you'll ever get that chance."Gareth gave another awkward chuckle and turned to leave.Just then, the front door was thrown open.An officer flashed his badge in front of Gareth. "Mr. Wilde, we received a report that you may be involved in a murder and arson case from five years ago. We need you to come with us for questioning."The luggage slipped from Gareth's hands and hit the floor. His face went pale."W-What? You've got the wrong person! I'm not Gareth Wilde!"Gareth tried to force his way past the officers. But the officers had dealt with plenty of suspects like him, and they quickly took him to the ground. He struggled desperately, but in the end, they dragged him away. Will

Willow's voice was filled with despair. I stopped and looked back. Before Gareth came into the picture, seeing Willow like this would have broken my heart. I couldn't stand to see her suffer. I wouldn't have even wanted her to shed a single tear for me.But now, I felt nothing for her, not even a pang of sympathy. If anything, seeing her in so much pain only irritated me.In that moment, I knew for certain that whatever I'd once felt for Willow was truly gone.I didn't stop. I tightened my hold on Hazel and carried her away faster.Hazel glanced at my face, then suddenly smiled."Wow, Mr. Delacroix. You really are cold-hearted. You can walk away from your ex without a second thought. After pursuing her for 15 years, aren't you worried about breaking her heart this time?"I gave an awkward smile."You know what she did to me. How could I possibly still have feelings for her? Maybe it's for the best that she showed up this time. I was already planning to make them answer for what

Today was my wedding anniversary with Hazel.I'd brought our marriage certificate with me because I knew I'd need it today. I'd meant to take it out earlier, but it had completely slipped my mind. Now, at least, I could use it to prove that Hazel and I were married. The moment Willow saw the certificate, she froze. The embossed seal was clearly visible, along with our names and photos. Even the date was from three years ago.Willow stumbled back two steps before her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor.I pulled Hazel into my arms and placed the marriage certificate in her hands."Why did you bring our marriage certificate with you?" She smiled and glanced down at it. "What if you lose it? That'd be a hassle."She gave the certificate a little wave. The hurt in Willow's eyes grew as she stared straight at me.I ignored her and smiled."If we lose it, we can always get another copy. We could even take another honeymoon while we're at it. You've always wanted to go t

Back then, when I was covered in injuries, Hazel kept coming back to me, patiently trying to comfort me.She told me that at first, she'd only approached me out of sympathy. But the more time we spent together, the deeper our feelings became.Three years ago, we finally became a couple.Hazel had pulled me from the fire and stayed with me until I recovered. After a year of knowing each other, she confessed her feelings to me.She held out a ring. It was designed like my favorite flower, a rose."I saved you at first because I felt sorry for you. But after spending this past year with you, I have to admit that I've fallen for you. I love how strong and persistent you are. Even after everything you've been through, you still refuse to give up."I know you're still hurting, and I can wait. I just wanted you to know how I feel. If you're willing to give me a chance, I want us to date seriously. I won't change my mind, but I'll give you all the time you need."Hazel had been brave,

In the 15 years I spent chasing after Willow, I never said anything that cruel to her.Even when she changed my college applications without telling me, all I did was angrily demand an explanation. I never cursed her out.Willow looked at me with hurt in her eyes, her fingers trembling. She was about to say something, but Gareth had already had enough. He rushed in front of Willow and glared at me."Orson, I know you're still hung up on what happened back then, but you can't treat Willow like this. You have no idea what she's done for you over the past five years. If you really want revenge, come after me. Do whatever you want to me. Even if you set another fire, I won't run this time."He said it with such righteous conviction that anyone listening might have thought I really was the convicted criminal he made me out to be—the one who had tried to burn him alive, failed, and then somehow turned around and blamed him for everything.I let out a cold laugh.I knew exactly what G

  • The Man She Left Behind   Chapter 5 In What Capacity?

The moment those words left her mouth, everyone looked up.Aveline's eyes widened in shock as she stared at the newcomer. "Hazel Winterburn?"Hazel frowned, not even bothering to look at Aveline. Her eyes stayed fixed on Willow. "What are you doing to my husband?"Before Willow could answer, Aveline eagerly jumped in."This has to be a mistake, Ms. Winterburn. Did you get the wrong person? He's a convicted criminal who went to prison for setting a fire that killed his mother. Why would you marry someone like him?"Aveline clearly wanted to ingratiate herself with Hazel. She wore a mocking smile, and whenever she looked at me, there was open contempt in her eyes. Our former classmates began whispering."Exactly. Orson's a convicted criminal, and he was always chasing after Willow, too. Back then, he had absolutely no self-respect. If my girlfriend changed my college applications three times, I'd have wanted to kill her. But he just took all of it.""Back in senior year, he broug
