Chapter 3 The Life They Destroyed

Author: Twenty Springs
Gareth was furious when he saw this. He took two steps forward, intending to pull Willow to her feet.

But Willow remained on her knees.

Gareth clenched his jaw and turned to me.

"Orson, Willow gave up on you back then because she was trying to save me. She's married to me now. But if you can forgive her, I'll divorce Willow. I'll step aside and let the two of you have each other."

He lowered his head, looking deeply unwilling to accept it.

And just like that, the two people who had destroyed my life were standing before me.

Aveline finally lost her temper. "Orson, how much longer are you going to keep this up? Willow's already on her knees, and Gareth is willing to divorce her. What more do you want?"

I found the whole thing absurd.

Was Willow kneeling really worth that much? Could it make up for the three years I'd lost and my mother's life?

Back in my senior year of high school, Willow had changed my college applications three times.

The strain eventually became too much for my mother, and she fell seriously ill and was hospitalized.

Feeling guilty, Willow spent some time trying to comfort me.

But when Gareth saw her by my side, he couldn't stand it. He took videos of himself sleeping with Willow and used them to provoke my mother.

"If it weren't for the fact that you're sick, why would Willow ever come back to your son? Your whole family is pathetic. All you know how to do is play the victim and try to steal someone else's woman. Let me tell you something: that future daughter-in-law you're so fond of? She's already slept with me."

The moment he finished speaking, my mother suffered a sudden attack.

Doctors and nurses rushed into the room.

Gareth wanted to destroy the evidence and make sure he could get away, so he set fire to the hospital room.

I fought my way inside, but I still couldn't save my mother.

After I called the police, they arrested me instead.

Willow had accused me of starting the fire to protect Gareth.

Thrice, she changed my college applications for Gareth and brushed it off as a joke.

The last time, I had finally managed to get into Veridia University. But Willow had once again protected Gareth, accusing me of killing my mother and leaving me behind bars.

When she came to visit me, I screamed at her, demanding to know why she'd done it.

Willow only looked at me, her expression torn.

"Orson, you've already repeated your senior year three times. A little more time won't make much difference. And your grades are good. But Gareth can't afford that. He can't afford to carry the blame for murder. If he does, his whole life will be ruined."

"What about me? What about my life? What about my mother's life?" I screamed until my eyes burned.

Willow only looked at me guiltily. "I'll make it up to you, Orson. I'll have plenty of money someday. You won't have to work. I'll support you, even if you end up an ex-con."

I felt all the strength drain out of me.

Willow had planned everything from the beginning.

She wanted me to take the blame for Gareth and watch the man who killed my mother walk free. Meanwhile, her compensation for me was nothing more than promising to support me.

In the end, the police released me since they didn't have enough evidence.

But my life had already been destroyed. I was expelled from school, and my mother was dead.

Willow and Gareth had vanished without a trace. Everyone turned against me and treated me like I was worthless.

Desperate and with nothing left to lose, I used every means I could to lure Gareth to my house.

He hadn't changed a bit. The moment he saw me, he burst out laughing.

"Orson, look at you. You're a pathetic mess. You know what? When your mother died, she looked at me with the exact same expression you're giving me now."

Gareth laughed mockingly as he spoke.

Then, he pulled out photo after photo of himself with Willow, along with videos, and shoved them in front of me.

"The woman you've been trying to woo all these years? It took me only a month to get her into bed. And let me tell you, she's pretty damn good. Even after I set fire to your mother's room and killed her, she helped to cover my tracks.

"Too bad you weren't lucky enough to enjoy any of that. You spent all those years kissing her ass, and you couldn't even protect your own mother."

Gareth put on a feigned look of sympathy.

I finally snapped.

My face twisted with rage as I lunged forward and grabbed him by the throat. "Gareth! You're going to pay for this with your life!"

Willow's words made Gareth go rigid. He let out an awkward laugh. "How could that be? If Orson really cared about what happened back then, he wouldn't have come after you first."Either way, I'm leaving. Don't contact me again unless Radcliff Group manages to make a comeback. Though I don't think you'll ever get that chance."Gareth gave another awkward chuckle and turned to leave.Just then, the front door was thrown open.An officer flashed his badge in front of Gareth. "Mr. Wilde, we received a report that you may be involved in a murder and arson case from five years ago. We need you to come with us for questioning."The luggage slipped from Gareth's hands and hit the floor. His face went pale."W-What? You've got the wrong person! I'm not Gareth Wilde!"Gareth tried to force his way past the officers. But the officers had dealt with plenty of suspects like him, and they quickly took him to the ground. He struggled desperately, but in the end, they dragged him away. Will

Willow's voice was filled with despair. I stopped and looked back. Before Gareth came into the picture, seeing Willow like this would have broken my heart. I couldn't stand to see her suffer. I wouldn't have even wanted her to shed a single tear for me.But now, I felt nothing for her, not even a pang of sympathy. If anything, seeing her in so much pain only irritated me.In that moment, I knew for certain that whatever I'd once felt for Willow was truly gone.I didn't stop. I tightened my hold on Hazel and carried her away faster.Hazel glanced at my face, then suddenly smiled."Wow, Mr. Delacroix. You really are cold-hearted. You can walk away from your ex without a second thought. After pursuing her for 15 years, aren't you worried about breaking her heart this time?"I gave an awkward smile."You know what she did to me. How could I possibly still have feelings for her? Maybe it's for the best that she showed up this time. I was already planning to make them answer for what

Today was my wedding anniversary with Hazel.I'd brought our marriage certificate with me because I knew I'd need it today. I'd meant to take it out earlier, but it had completely slipped my mind. Now, at least, I could use it to prove that Hazel and I were married. The moment Willow saw the certificate, she froze. The embossed seal was clearly visible, along with our names and photos. Even the date was from three years ago.Willow stumbled back two steps before her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor.I pulled Hazel into my arms and placed the marriage certificate in her hands."Why did you bring our marriage certificate with you?" She smiled and glanced down at it. "What if you lose it? That'd be a hassle."She gave the certificate a little wave. The hurt in Willow's eyes grew as she stared straight at me.I ignored her and smiled."If we lose it, we can always get another copy. We could even take another honeymoon while we're at it. You've always wanted to go t

After a year of knowing each other, she confessed her feelings to me.She held out a ring. It was designed like my favorite flower, a rose."I saved you at first because I felt sorry for you. But after spending this past year with you, I have to admit that I've fallen for you. I love how strong and persistent you are. Even after everything you've been through, you still refuse to give up."I know you're still hurting, and I can wait. I just wanted you to know how I feel. In the 15 years I spent chasing after Willow, I never said anything that cruel to her.Even when she changed my college applications without telling me, all I did was angrily demand an explanation. I never cursed her out.Willow looked at me with hurt in her eyes, her fingers trembling. She was about to say something, but Gareth had already had enough. He rushed in front of Willow and glared at me."Orson, I know you're still hung up on what happened back then, but you can't treat Willow like this. You have no idea what she's done for you over the past five years. If you really want revenge, come after me. Do whatever you want to me. Even if you set another fire, I won't run this time."He said it with such righteous conviction that anyone listening might have thought I really was the convicted criminal he made me out to be—the one who had tried to burn him alive, failed, and then somehow turned around and blamed him for everything.I let out a cold laugh.I knew exactly what G

The moment those words left her mouth, everyone looked up.Aveline's eyes widened in shock as she stared at the newcomer. "Hazel Winterburn?"Hazel frowned, not even bothering to look at Aveline. Her eyes stayed fixed on Willow. "What are you doing to my husband?"Before Willow could answer, Aveline eagerly jumped in."This has to be a mistake, Ms. Winterburn. Did you get the wrong person? He's a convicted criminal who went to prison for setting a fire that killed his mother. Why would you marry someone like him?"Aveline clearly wanted to ingratiate herself with Hazel. She wore a mocking smile, and whenever she looked at me, there was open contempt in her eyes. Our former classmates began whispering."Exactly. Orson's a convicted criminal, and he was always chasing after Willow, too. Back then, he had absolutely no self-respect.
