The familiar holiday tune played softly in my headphones, transporting me to a festive world despite my current surroundings. I closed my eyes, eagerly anticipating my journey back home. I was on a plane, en route to Singapore to reunite with my mom and sister, marking the beginning of a much-needed break from school. It had been a long time since I had been home, and I was determined to make this Christmas special.

As the plane continued its steady course, I couldn't help but think about the vast distance I was traveling and my deep-seated fear of flying, especially over the open sea. This fear had haunted me ever since I lost Brett, and every flight was a test of my resolve.

My mom had made it clear that I should only return when I could afford a substantial break - a month at the very least - or not bother coming at all, she feared for me. This year, I had worked hard to meet her expectations, and now, three days before Christmas, I was on my way to surprise her. After all, Christmas without family just didn't feel right.

Over the past couple of years, I had been trying to overcome my fear with the help of a therapist. Although the fear was far from gone, my therapist had provided a temporary solution - distraction. So, as I sat on the plane, I imagined myself back in my hostel, curled up on my bed, with loud music blaring in my ears, a technique that was keeping my anxieties at bay.

My reverie was abruptly interrupted by a deep voice, and a hand shaking my shoulder.

"Hey, are you okay?" I heard faintly.

It was the person seated next to me, a guy who looked around my age, perhaps a bit older.

'When did I fall asleep?' I wondered, still groggy from my impromptu nap.

"Yeah," I mumbled, rubbing my eyes.

"Well, in that case, GET off my shoulder," he exclaimed, his tone bordering on rudeness. I quickly stood up, silently berating myself for potentially drooling on him.

"I'm sorry," I apologized, blushing with embarrassment.

"You better be," he replied curtly.

I decided to ignore his impolite comment and his pointed stare. With the plane having safely landed, I turned off the music, which had provided both comfort and distraction during the flight.

After disembarking, I made my way through the airport, excited to be back on solid ground and eager to catch a taxi. However, my excitement was short-lived as I collided with someone, causing both of us to tumble to the ground. The contents of my handbag and whatever the stranger was holding were scattered on the floor.

"Wow, just great," I muttered under my breath, exasperated as I began gathering my belongings.

As I attempted to stand, I came face to face with the person who had pushed me, and he exclaimed, "You?!" He was the one seated next to me on the plane.
