Chapter 3

Author: Money Meow
Dante's cold voice rang out. "Who's out there?"

By the time he chased after whoever had been outside, the hallway was empty.

When Dante returned with Isabella, I was still sitting in my original seat, quietly listening to the performance.

He led Isabella over and sat her beside me, offering a casual explanation. "The rain's coming down hard outside, and she happens to like the concert, so I let her stay."

I hummed in response, making no attempt to expose his lie.

After the concert ended, Dante had a collection of musical instruments brought out. Every single one was extremely expensive.

"You once told me you liked these instruments, so I paid whatever it took to buy them." He smiled at me. "Do you like them?"

Isabella stood nearby, a flicker of jealousy in her eyes.

Suddenly, she reached out and tugged on a decorative cord beside her.

"Don't pull that!" a staff member shouted, their face draining of color, but it was already too late.

A rumbling sounded overhead. The next second, the heavy lighting rig came crashing down!

Dante immediately yanked Isabella toward him, shielding her in his arms as they rolled out of the way.

I remained where I was, watching helplessly as the equipment came crashing down on me.

A wave of excruciating pain struck. I collapsed into a pool of blood, and the last thing I heard before losing consciousness was Dante shouting in panic, "Marie!"

But the woman in his arms was Isabella.

When I woke up again, I hadn't even fully regained my bearings before I saw Isabella throwing herself into Dante's arms, crying.

"What are we going to do? It's all my fault... I shouldn't have pulled that cord. If I hadn't, Marie wouldn't have gotten hurt... You should punish me..."

Dante wiped away her tears helplessly. "You really want to be punished?"

Isabella nodded through her sobs. "Yes. If I do something wrong and don't get punished, I can't sleep at night..."

Dante chuckled softly and pinched her cheek. "Then call me Marito."

Isabella froze. "What?"

"Call me Marito."

Her cheeks flushed red as she whispered, "Marito."

Dante stroked her hair, his voice gentle. "Now that you've called me Marito, you need to listen to me. I'll handle this matter myself. You don't need to worry about it."

Isabella had no choice but to leave obediently.

I watched the entire scene in silence. By accident, my fingers knocked over the water glass on the bedside table.

Dante whipped around. Only then did he realize I was awake.

He hurried over, his eyes full of concern. "Marie, how are you feeling? Does anything hurt?"

He took my hand, his tone laced with remorse. "I'm sorry. Everything happened so fast back then. I mistook her for you..."

I closed my eyes without exposing his lie. "Where's Isabella?"

Dante's expression shifted. Thinking I wanted to go after her, he immediately explained, "She didn't do it on purpose... But she was still in the wrong, and I've already punished her severely."

Remembering what I'd just witnessed, I simply said, "I'm hungry."

Dante froze. He stared into my eyes, finally sensing that something was wrong.

I was too calm. Unnaturally calm.

He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but I repeated, "I'm hungry."

Dante could only suppress his unease and nod gently. "Okay, baby. I'll go buy you something to eat right now. Just wait here."

He grabbed his car keys and hurried out with Isabella.

The moment the door clicked shut, I could no longer hold back my tears.

It is only when there is love that one becomes entangled and keeps score.

But now, I'd lost all hope in Dante.

I said coldly, "I don't want to see any of you. Stop bothering me.""Marie!""Dante, listen carefully." I looked at him and spoke each word distinctly. "I said I don't love you anymore."He remained on his knees, looking completely dazed.Sophie came over and stepped in front of me. "Mr. Vitale, please leave. This is a private residence. If you don't go, I'll call the police."Dante didn't move. He just looked at me, his eyes filled with despair. "Marie, can we start over? I'll give you anything. I'll give you everything I have...""I don't want anything.""Then what do you want? Tell me! Whatever you want, I'll give it to you!"I looked at him and spoke softly. "I want you never to have appeared in my life in the first place. And now, I want you to leave for good and never show your face in front of me again."Dante's breath caught for a moment. Then he lowered his head, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably. He remained kneeling there for a long time without moving.Event

By then, I was in Paris, waking up in my friend's apartment. My friend was Sophie Laurent, my college roommate. When she saw I was awake, she came over and hugged me. Her voice was full of concern. "Finally, I get to see you again. How have you been all these years?"I smiled faintly. "Whether the past was good or bad doesn't matter anymore."Sophie looked at how exhausted I was. She opened her mouth, but in the end, she didn't ask anything.Instead, she patted my shoulder. "My studio is waiting for you. You don't need to think about anything else. Marie, you deserve so much better."I nodded in agreement.Sophie took me out for a meal, and we wandered through the streets of Paris. In the past, for Dante's sake, I'd been willing to let myself be trapped in that villa, giving up my work, my friends, and even myself.I'd thought that was love. I'd thought he was worth it.But I wasn't willing to do that anymore.I took out my phone. A string of missed calls and unread messages

Marie's clothes and personal belongings were all gone.Dante's breathing grew ragged. He rushed into the study, then the kitchen, calling her name over and over."Marie!"Marie, where are you?"Baby, don't scare me..."He searched every inch of the villa, but Marie was nowhere to be found. He stood in the living room, panic taking hold of him. Then he spotted the safe. Marie used it to store important things. He'd once asked her what she kept inside, and she'd smiled and said, "A woman's secrets."He hadn't thought much of it at the time. He believed everything about Marie belonged to him, including her secrets. But now, with the safe sitting right in front of him, Dante rushed toward it and turned the combination lock with trembling fingers. He tried Marie's birthday. Wrong. His own birthday. Wrong.Their wedding anniversary. Still wrong.Sweat poured down his face as panic consumed him. Finally, he closed his eyes, and a memory flashed through his mind.Years ago, when

Dante woke to the sound of someone crying. He abruptly opened his eyes and realized he had fallen asleep in Isabella's bed.Isabella was curled up beneath the covers, her shoulders trembling slightly as she cried. The sight made his heart ache."What's wrong?"Isabella looked up at him. "I dreamed you left... that you'd gone back to Marie and would never care about me again."At the mention of Marie's name, Dante's heart sank.He hadn't gone home last night. What was Marie doing? Had she been looking for him all this time?He immediately grabbed his phone. It was already two in the morning, but the screen was completely clear. No missed calls. No unread messages.Marie hadn't replied to him.He scrolled up through their conversation and realized that over the past few days, almost all the messages had come from him. Marie had barely responded.Dante tightened his grip on the phone, sensing that something was wrong."Dante?" Isabella sat up and reached for him. "What are you

Isabella followed Dante, glancing back at me with the faintest curve of her lips.I stood where I was, watching them walk away. The people around me were still laughing and talking about how much Mr. Vitale spoiled me.But they hadn't seen him accompanying another woman to put on the gown that was supposed to be mine.A few minutes later, Isabella emerged. She was wearing the gown, its waist fitting her perfectly. It had originally been tailored to my measurements, yet it fit her just as well.Dante stood beside her, adjusting the shoulder straps with an intimacy that made my stomach turn.Isabella approached me, lifting the hem of her skirt with an innocent smile. "Marie, does it look good? Dante says it suits me."I looked at Dante.A flicker of discomfort crossed his face, but he still spoke up, "Baby, Isabella is only wearing it temporarily. I've already contacted the designer to have an even better one made for you. Okay?"I smiled faintly. "There's no need."Dante froze

He fed me himself and applied medication to my wounds. When I was finally discharged, Dante went out of his way to throw a party to celebrate my recovery.Everyone in the hall looked at me with envy."Mr. Vitale really spoils Marie...""I heard all those gifts are limited editions. Some of them were even bought at auction for exorbitant prices...""Marie is so lucky..."I stood in the middle of the crowd without the slightest smile on my face.Seeing that I was unhappy, Dante slipped an arm around my waist. "Baby, I just had a custom gown made for you. It's upstairs. Don't be mad, okay?"I knew which couture gown he meant. Dante had genuinely put thought into it. The designer was known for having a strong personality and would never sell one of his creations to someone he didn't believe was sincere.I looked at Dante, but all I felt was bitter irony."Baby, why don't you go upstairs and change into it in a little while? Let everyone see how beautiful you are."I tugged at th
