Chapter 2

Author: Money Meow
Dante and Isabella registered their marriage three years ago, in the second month after my wedding.

"Marie, that marriage certificate of yours is fake." She sent me a voice message, her tone laced with amusement.

"Dante says you're as pure as the moon, meant to shine where everyone can see you. I'm the blade he keeps close to his side, so he gave me the title of wife and gave you his affection. Tell me, which one of us got the better deal?"

Then she sent me a video.

In the bedroom, Dante was leaning against the headboard. When my call came through, he turned to Isabella. "Stop messing around. I need to take this call."

Then he answered, his voice gentle. "Baby, I'm in a meeting."

Isabella laughed beside him.

I turned off the video. My fingers trembled, but not a single tear fell.

I saved all the evidence in an encrypted folder, then took out a locked case. Inside was only one ring.

Dante had given it to me when he was eighteen. Back then, he'd spent every penny of his savings to buy it.

At eighteen, he was dealing with internal power struggles within his family. There were countless problems waiting for him to resolve. This was all he could afford to give me.

I stared at the ring, then changed the case's combination to the date we officially became a couple.

When I had taken care of everything, I looked at the message from my friend and gave a bitter smile.

"I've already booked your plane ticket. This time, you absolutely cannot back out again."

After that, I applied to cancel all my identity records in Italy.

A little while later, Dante came home. He was holding a huge bouquet of roses in one hand and a cake in the other. He approached me with a warm smile.

"Darling, I'm home." He reached out to hug me. "Things have been so hectic with family business these past few days. Don't be mad, okay? I've prepared a surprise for you."

I shifted slightly to avoid his embrace and answered calmly, "I'm not mad."

He paused, then took my hand. "Tomorrow, I'll take you to a concert."

But all I could think about was my upcoming flight to Paris. I merely smiled without answering.

The following afternoon, as soon as we entered the concert hall, I realized the entire venue had been booked exclusively for us. People filled the surrounding seats, and when they saw us, they greeted me in hushed voices.

"Marie, your husband really loves you. He arranged this entire concert just for you."

"That's right, Marie. I've heard how strong your relationship is. Seeing you together today, I can tell it's true."

Dante smiled as he took my hand, clearly pleased by everyone's praise, but my heart felt as though it had been submerged in ice water, cold and aching.

He gave me grand romantic gestures while giving another woman the legal status of his wife.

He let me bask in the envy of everyone around us while another woman was the one named on his marriage certificate.

During the intermission, Isabella suddenly barged into the concert hall, carrying a black suit jacket.

Dante's expression changed. "Your injuries have barely healed. Who told you to come here?"

She put on a wounded expression. "I was worried Marie might be cold, and I didn't want you to worry..."

Dante took the jacket from her and handed it to me. "Baby, I'll go with you to change."

I glanced at them, then stood up and walked away.

When I came out of the restroom, Dante was gone.

I heard panting from the next room. When I walked over, I saw him pinning Isabella against the sink.

I stood outside the door, my heart feeling as though it had been ripped in two. The pain was so intense that I could barely stay on my feet.

I said coldly, "I don't want to see any of you. Stop bothering me.""Marie!""Dante, listen carefully." I looked at him and spoke each word distinctly. "I said I don't love you anymore."He remained on his knees, looking completely dazed.Sophie came over and stepped in front of me. "Mr. Vitale, please leave. This is a private residence. If you don't go, I'll call the police."Dante didn't move. He just looked at me, his eyes filled with despair. "Marie, can we start over? I'll give you anything. I'll give you everything I have...""I don't want anything.""Then what do you want? Tell me! Whatever you want, I'll give it to you!"I looked at him and spoke softly. "I want you never to have appeared in my life in the first place. And now, I want you to leave for good and never show your face in front of me again."Dante's breath caught for a moment. Then he lowered his head, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably. He remained kneeling there for a long time without moving.Event

By then, I was in Paris, waking up in my friend's apartment. My friend was Sophie Laurent, my college roommate. When she saw I was awake, she came over and hugged me. Her voice was full of concern. "Finally, I get to see you again. How have you been all these years?"I smiled faintly. "Whether the past was good or bad doesn't matter anymore."Sophie looked at how exhausted I was. She opened her mouth, but in the end, she didn't ask anything.Instead, she patted my shoulder. "My studio is waiting for you. You don't need to think about anything else. Marie, you deserve so much better."I nodded in agreement.Sophie took me out for a meal, and we wandered through the streets of Paris. In the past, for Dante's sake, I'd been willing to let myself be trapped in that villa, giving up my work, my friends, and even myself.I'd thought that was love. I'd thought he was worth it.But I wasn't willing to do that anymore.I took out my phone. A string of missed calls and unread messages

Marie's clothes and personal belongings were all gone.Dante's breathing grew ragged. He rushed into the study, then the kitchen, calling her name over and over."Marie!"Marie, where are you?"Baby, don't scare me..."He searched every inch of the villa, but Marie was nowhere to be found. He stood in the living room, panic taking hold of him. Then he spotted the safe. Marie used it to store important things. He'd once asked her what she kept inside, and she'd smiled and said, "A woman's secrets."He hadn't thought much of it at the time. He believed everything about Marie belonged to him, including her secrets. But now, with the safe sitting right in front of him, Dante rushed toward it and turned the combination lock with trembling fingers. He tried Marie's birthday. Wrong. His own birthday. Wrong.Their wedding anniversary. Still wrong.Sweat poured down his face as panic consumed him. Finally, he closed his eyes, and a memory flashed through his mind.Years ago, when

Dante woke to the sound of someone crying. He abruptly opened his eyes and realized he had fallen asleep in Isabella's bed.Isabella was curled up beneath the covers, her shoulders trembling slightly as she cried. The sight made his heart ache."What's wrong?"Isabella looked up at him. "I dreamed you left... that you'd gone back to Marie and would never care about me again."At the mention of Marie's name, Dante's heart sank.He hadn't gone home last night. What was Marie doing? Had she been looking for him all this time?He immediately grabbed his phone. It was already two in the morning, but the screen was completely clear. No missed calls. No unread messages.Marie hadn't replied to him.He scrolled up through their conversation and realized that over the past few days, almost all the messages had come from him. Marie had barely responded.Dante tightened his grip on the phone, sensing that something was wrong."Dante?" Isabella sat up and reached for him. "What are you

Isabella followed Dante, glancing back at me with the faintest curve of her lips.I stood where I was, watching them walk away. The people around me were still laughing and talking about how much Mr. Vitale spoiled me.But they hadn't seen him accompanying another woman to put on the gown that was supposed to be mine.A few minutes later, Isabella emerged. She was wearing the gown, its waist fitting her perfectly. It had originally been tailored to my measurements, yet it fit her just as well.Dante stood beside her, adjusting the shoulder straps with an intimacy that made my stomach turn.Isabella approached me, lifting the hem of her skirt with an innocent smile. "Marie, does it look good? Dante says it suits me."I looked at Dante.A flicker of discomfort crossed his face, but he still spoke up, "Baby, Isabella is only wearing it temporarily. I've already contacted the designer to have an even better one made for you. Okay?"I smiled faintly. "There's no need."Dante froze

He fed me himself and applied medication to my wounds. When I was finally discharged, Dante went out of his way to throw a party to celebrate my recovery.Everyone in the hall looked at me with envy."Mr. Vitale really spoils Marie...""I heard all those gifts are limited editions. Some of them were even bought at auction for exorbitant prices...""Marie is so lucky..."I stood in the middle of the crowd without the slightest smile on my face.Seeing that I was unhappy, Dante slipped an arm around my waist. "Baby, I just had a custom gown made for you. It's upstairs. Don't be mad, okay?"I knew which couture gown he meant. Dante had genuinely put thought into it. The designer was known for having a strong personality and would never sell one of his creations to someone he didn't believe was sincere.I looked at Dante, but all I felt was bitter irony."Baby, why don't you go upstairs and change into it in a little while? Let everyone see how beautiful you are."I tugged at th
