Chapter 4

مؤلف: Seedy Sunflower
"You want to leave?" George seemed surprised. Then, he thought about how keeping Mason around would be an eyesore anyway, now that Landon was gone. So, he readily agreed. "Consider it done."

"I'm taking Landon's ashes with me," Mason said.

George shot him a look. "You do realize they've already been placed in the Statham family's memorial hall, right? It's not that easy to take them away."

Mason's voice was low and steady. "I know. According to the family's rules, whoever wants to do that must kneel in the memorial hall for seven days and nights and go without food. I can do that."

George snorted. "Fine, then. If you really can do it, I'll let you take the ashes when you leave."

Just like that, Mason was taken to the Statham family's memorial hall. He dropped to his knees without hesitation as the maids watched.

He stayed like that for seven days and nights. Bruises formed on his knees, and he was weak with hunger. But he stuck it out, only collapsing when the maids told him the seven days were up.

Right before he passed out, he vaguely heard someone kicking the door to the memorial hall open. Whoever that person was helped him up, their hand trembling slightly as it wrapped around his torso.

When Mason opened his eyes again, the first thing he saw was Lindsay sitting by his bedside, prominent dark circles under her eyes.

"You're awake." She helped him up and gave him a glass of water. Her gaze carried hints of resignation as she looked at him. "If Grandpa ever punishes you again in the future, have someone send word to me. I'll come to your rescue. Worse comes to worst, I'll take the punishment on your behalf."

Her gaze turned bewildered. "And why didn't you say anything when those maids made things harder for you? They swapped out the cushion you were supposed to kneel on for a hard mat. Don't forget that you're my husband. Couldn't you have thrown your weight around a little?"

Her tone was contemptuous as she mentioned the maids. All Mason did was lower his gaze, his lips curving in a mocking smile.

Throw his weight around?

In all his years living at Statham Manor, Lindsay had forced him to stay in a room meant for the hired help. She'd refused to acknowledge his identity as her husband, and she'd even made him compensate tenfold for a plate that he'd accidentally broken.

Yet now, here she was, talking to him about throwing his weight around. Didn't she think it was too late for that?

Mason had long stopped caring about these things. But when he was discharged from the hospital and taken back to Statham Manor, Lindsay still ordered the butler to gather all the maids around so she could berate them.

"Mason Lakeworth is my husband. From now on, whatever he says represents me, too. I've already fired two of the maids who dared disrespect him, and I don't want to see a repeat of that."

Mason just stood quietly off to one side as he listened and watched. He only found the situation beyond mocking.

Once Lindsay finished reprimanding the maids and they scattered, Mason picked up the medication he'd brought back from the hospital and headed toward the servants' quarters. For five years, he and Landon had shared that remote, cold room in the darkest corner of the house, where sunlight never reached.

Lindsay frowned and followed him. As she looked around the cramped, dark room piled high with random objects, she finally seemed to remember that she was the one who'd casually given the order to make Mason stay there.

"There are plenty of empty rooms upstairs; you can move into any of them whenever you want. I'm sorry. I… I didn't know you were still staying here," she said.

He shook his head. "I'm fine here."

He would soon be gone, anyway. At least this room had memories of his life with Landon.

"If you really do feel sorry, don't forget that you promised to visit Landon's grave tomorrow. It's Remembrance Day." Remembrance Day was a local holiday when the people of Heronvale would pay respects to the dead.

With that, Mason pushed Lindsay out of the room and shut the door.

The following day, Mason left the house bright and early to buy all of Landon's favorite toy cars. He also got a fresh bouquet of sunflowers.

After taking a cab to the graveyard with his hands full of things, he noticed that Lindsay was nowhere in sight. She'd already been out of the house when he'd left that morning.

He curled his lips. He couldn't believe he'd been foolish enough to think that she'd come early to the graveyard.

He pulled out his phone and called her, but no one answered after a few tries. Then, he received a few photos from a number he didn't recognize. They were of Lindsay with her sleeves rolled up as she sliced vegetables in the kitchen. From the reflection on the glass, Mason clearly saw that Harry was the one who'd taken the photos.

"My stomach was acting up, so Lindsay came over first thing in the morning to care for me. And remember the seven days you spent on your knees in the Statham family's memorial hall? She was with me the whole time, too. If you had even the slightest bit of dignity, you'd stop humiliating yourself like this."

After dealing with so many people, Mason was exhausted. He turned off the light, lay down on the hospital bed, and soon drifted off to sleep. In his sleep, he suddenly felt like he was suffocating. His eyes flew open, and he saw Harry standing in his hospital room, his hands clamped around his throat.Harry's face was twisted with mania. He now knew who Mason really was, and that the engagement with Lindsay had originally been Mason's. He also knew that the status he enjoyed as the Gardner heir should've belonged to Mason. But he couldn't accept any of it.If that was how it was going to be, then he would just send Mason to his grave. That way, Mason would never be able to fight him for anything again. His grip on Mason's throat tightened bit by bit, but Mason kept struggling and refused to just die.Harry freed one hand, pulled a small bottle of poison out of his pocket, and clamped his fingers around Mason's jaw. He hissed, "Since you won't take the easy way out, then you can d

Mason couldn't be bothered to waste his breath on Helen and Stuart anymore. Right on cue, Ingrid came into the room and "politely asked" them to leave. He'd barely had a few minutes of peace when Lindsay walked in.Mason couldn't bring himself to be pleasant to her. "And what are you doing here?"She looked at him quietly, then asked hoarsely, "Why did you just disappear without a word? I never agreed to divorce you."He frowned at her. "I brought up divorce with you plenty of times. You kept refusing, so I had no choice but to ask your grandfather to step in and get it done."Besides, we both know why you suddenly started being so nice to me those few days. It wasn't because Landon died, and it wasn't because I fell sick."It was because once you found out who I really was, you wanted to help Harry repay what he owed me. That's why you changed. Either way, that's unnecessary now. You don't need to keep up this act. Spare me the belated love and devotion."Lindsay's eyes turned

In the VIP ward of a hospital in Suderbury, Ingrid had already had her blood drawn once to be given to Mason. The doctor, holding the needle, tried to stop her from going any further."Ma'am, we've already requested a blood transfer from the hospital next door. You've given so much already—you're at your limit."Ingrid's lips were bloodless, but her eyes stayed fixed on Mason's ashen face. She said firmly, "Just keep going. All that matters is that he's saved."Fresh blood slowly flowed into the collection bag again. Ingrid didn't even flinch. She just kept reminding the doctor that they had to save Mason, whatever it took. After a full day and night, Mason finally regained consciousness. The moment he opened his eyes, he saw Ingrid dozing at the edge of his bed, her head pillowed on her arms. There were several obvious needle marks on her forearm. He tried to sit up, but the slight movement startled Ingrid awake. The first thing she did when she opened her eyes was check his con

Helen clutched the photos of Mason's injuries so tightly her knuckles went white. A sharp pain tore through her chest like someone had ripped a piece of her heart out."Why would you do this to him? He's never hurt you. What did he do wrong?" she cried.Beside her, Stuart's eyes were red as well. His gaze was filled with disappointment as he looked at Harry.Harry completely lost it. "What the hell is wrong with all of you? What kind of spell did Mason put you under? His life is worth nothing, so what does it matter that I had him beaten up? Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this?"Helen and Stuart shook with rage at his words. They immediately summoned the butler and had Harry dragged back to his room to be grounded.Lindsay just watched the whole thing play out, her expression frosty. Once Harry's flailing figure finally disappeared around the corner, she turned to Helen and Stuart, saying flatly, "I don't want to keep hiding who Mason really is. I'm going to find hi

Lindsay could still remember the looks on Helen's and Stuart's faces.Initially, their eyes had gone wide with disbelief as they read the letter again and again. Then, they'd slowly lifted their pale faces, their voices shaking as they spoke."So… Mason already knows everything?""What does he mean by this? He's gone… and he doesn't want us anymore?""Are we… never going to see him again?"Lindsay yanked the letter from their hands, her expression ice cold. She folded it carefully, tucked it away, and only then spoke. "Mason just left the city. He didn't vanish off the face of the earth. Of course, you can still see him. The question is whether you're willing to risk Harry finding out the truth."In truth, these words weren't just meant for Helen and Stuart. They were also meant for herself.Did she want to see Mason again? Of course she did. But what right did she have to go near him now? After that day, Helen and Stuart left Lindsay alone for a long time. Harry, on the other

Valerie patted Ingrid on the shoulder, her tone gentle but firm. "You want space and time? I can give you that. But don't forget what you promised me. Call home regularly and come back for the holidays. Don't make Mom and Dad worry like this."Ingrid nodded. "Got it."Right before she left, Valerie turned to Mason and said politely, "Goodbye, Mr. Lakeworth."After walking Valerie out and watching her and her bodyguards disappear into the distance, Ingrid let out a long sigh. When she turned back to face Mason, a bit of her usual energy had returned."Thank you," she said. "My sister's willing to give me two years to let me do what I really love."He smiled at her. "You earned that yourself. Your hard work convinced her."…Over the next few days, under Mason's strict watch, Ingrid's hand gradually recovered, and their lives slid back into a normal rhythm. Now and then, Ingrid would show up at Mason's door to mooch a meal. In return, she would drop off a huge bag of snacks and ta
