Chapter 5

مؤلف: Seedy Sunflower
After reading the message, Mason tried to call Lindsay again, but her phone was already turned off. He tucked his phone away and set the things he'd brought down in front of Landon's headstone.

It was Remembrance Day, and the graveyard was crowded. People knelt in front of their loved ones' graves, pouring out their grief. The air was punctuated by quiet sobs.

Mason leaned down and gently brushed the dust from the headstone, forcing a smile. "Landon, I know your biggest wish was for your mother to finally see you and say something to you. I tried, I really did, but I just can't make it happen…

"Let's stop liking your mother from now on, okay? Whatever you want, I'll buy it and bring it to you. It's okay if you don't have your mother's love. I'll give you twice as much to make up for it. I… I really miss you…"

Mason slowly crouched beside the headstone and leaned against it, pouring out all the longing he'd carried for Landon these past few days. In truth, this headstone was merely one that Mason had put up in memory of Landon because he couldn't just waltz into the Statham family's memorial hall whenever he missed him.

A light drizzle began to fall. People who'd come to pay their respects either opened umbrellas or hurried away. Mason, however, sat on the ground as if he didn't feel a thing. He stayed there until he was soaked through, and at some point, he blacked out.

He ran a high fever all night. When he opened his eyes the next day, he found himself lying in a bed at Statham Manor. This room wasn't the cramped one meant for the help, though. He was in a spacious bedroom on the second floor with floor-to-ceiling windows.

He pushed himself up, pressing a hand to his throbbing head. Just then, his phone started ringing. The call was from a coworker at the newspaper.

"Mason, there's trouble. The feature you prepped got scooped—another outlet pushed it out first, and it's blowing up! Is someone targeting you? The editor-in-chief and I checked, and the byline over there is a guy named Harry Gardner.

"He's supposedly some rich kid who studied journalism overseas. Look, if it comes down to it, maybe your wife can pull some strings and help you fight this…"

While the coworker was still talking, Lindsay pushed the door open and walked in. She seemed to already know what was going on. As soon as Mason hung up and started to get out of bed, she placed a hand on his shoulder and stopped him.

"I'm the one who gave your article to Harry," she said.

He faltered. "What?"

"The groundskeeper found you passed out at the cemetery last night. When I went to bring you home, Harry came along. He saw the draft on your laptop and said he wanted to use it."

Mason stared at her in disbelief. "So… You just handed it over?"

Lindsay frowned slightly and nodded. "Harry has just returned to the country and needs to prove himself. It wasn't right for him to take your work, but he's been spoiled since he was a kid, and his heart condition doesn't help.

"Besides, you're the one who did him wrong back then. So… If he took the piece, then he took it. Let it go. I'll make it up to you in other ways."

Mason let out a short, incredulous laugh. Even now—when Lindsay already knew he'd been innocent, that this whole mess was a result of the Gardners setting him up—she was still dragging up the past to guilt-trip him just so she could protect Harry.

All that nonsense about her being reasonable, fair, and principled was utter bullshit. She would easily throw every last principle out the window when the person she truly cared about was involved.

"…Fine, then. How are you planning to make it up to me? Are you gonna threaten me this time, or bribe me?"

Lindsay's gaze darkened with annoyance when she heard the bite in his voice. She yanked open the collar of her blouse, then abruptly wrapped her arms around Mason's neck and leaned in to kiss him.

He jerked back and shoved her away in shock. "What the hell are you doing?"

She staggered back, just as stunned as him. She forced down her temper and frowned at him. "You've been a mess ever since Landon died, so I'll give you another kid. Doesn't that count as making it up to you?"

Mason's nails dug into his palm. His heart hurt so badly that he could almost feel it breaking. He'd already known that Lindsay didn't care about him or Landon, but he hadn't expected Landon's death to be something that meant so little to her.

To her, it was something she could brush aside with the careless offer to give him another child.

In the end, he couldn't keep his emotions in check. He swept everything within reach off the nightstand, sending them crashing to the floor. His eyes reddened as he hissed, "My heart breaks for Landon. He deserved so much better than this."

It was the first time Lindsay had ever seen Mason on the verge of tears.

In her mind, he'd always been a shameless freeloader who used Landon as an excuse to cling to the Statham family. No matter how much she hated or resented him, he'd always forced a smile and begged her to go see Landon. It was as though he'd never learned what it meant to give up or be afraid. But now…

Her chest tightened painfully. She lifted a hand to comfort him, only to stop herself. "I didn't mean anything else by it. I really do want to make things right…"

After dealing with so many people, Mason was exhausted. He turned off the light, lay down on the hospital bed, and soon drifted off to sleep. In his sleep, he suddenly felt like he was suffocating. His eyes flew open, and he saw Harry standing in his hospital room, his hands clamped around his throat.Harry's face was twisted with mania. He now knew who Mason really was, and that the engagement with Lindsay had originally been Mason's. He also knew that the status he enjoyed as the Gardner heir should've belonged to Mason. But he couldn't accept any of it.If that was how it was going to be, then he would just send Mason to his grave. That way, Mason would never be able to fight him for anything again. His grip on Mason's throat tightened bit by bit, but Mason kept struggling and refused to just die.Harry freed one hand, pulled a small bottle of poison out of his pocket, and clamped his fingers around Mason's jaw. He hissed, "Since you won't take the easy way out, then you can d

Mason couldn't be bothered to waste his breath on Helen and Stuart anymore. Right on cue, Ingrid came into the room and "politely asked" them to leave. He'd barely had a few minutes of peace when Lindsay walked in.Mason couldn't bring himself to be pleasant to her. "And what are you doing here?"She looked at him quietly, then asked hoarsely, "Why did you just disappear without a word? I never agreed to divorce you."He frowned at her. "I brought up divorce with you plenty of times. You kept refusing, so I had no choice but to ask your grandfather to step in and get it done."Besides, we both know why you suddenly started being so nice to me those few days. It wasn't because Landon died, and it wasn't because I fell sick."It was because once you found out who I really was, you wanted to help Harry repay what he owed me. That's why you changed. Either way, that's unnecessary now. You don't need to keep up this act. Spare me the belated love and devotion."Lindsay's eyes turned

In the VIP ward of a hospital in Suderbury, Ingrid had already had her blood drawn once to be given to Mason. The doctor, holding the needle, tried to stop her from going any further."Ma'am, we've already requested a blood transfer from the hospital next door. You've given so much already—you're at your limit."Ingrid's lips were bloodless, but her eyes stayed fixed on Mason's ashen face. She said firmly, "Just keep going. All that matters is that he's saved."Fresh blood slowly flowed into the collection bag again. Ingrid didn't even flinch. She just kept reminding the doctor that they had to save Mason, whatever it took. After a full day and night, Mason finally regained consciousness. The moment he opened his eyes, he saw Ingrid dozing at the edge of his bed, her head pillowed on her arms. There were several obvious needle marks on her forearm. He tried to sit up, but the slight movement startled Ingrid awake. The first thing she did when she opened her eyes was check his con

Helen clutched the photos of Mason's injuries so tightly her knuckles went white. A sharp pain tore through her chest like someone had ripped a piece of her heart out."Why would you do this to him? He's never hurt you. What did he do wrong?" she cried.Beside her, Stuart's eyes were red as well. His gaze was filled with disappointment as he looked at Harry.Harry completely lost it. "What the hell is wrong with all of you? What kind of spell did Mason put you under? His life is worth nothing, so what does it matter that I had him beaten up? Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this?"Helen and Stuart shook with rage at his words. They immediately summoned the butler and had Harry dragged back to his room to be grounded.Lindsay just watched the whole thing play out, her expression frosty. Once Harry's flailing figure finally disappeared around the corner, she turned to Helen and Stuart, saying flatly, "I don't want to keep hiding who Mason really is. I'm going to find hi

Lindsay could still remember the looks on Helen's and Stuart's faces.Initially, their eyes had gone wide with disbelief as they read the letter again and again. Then, they'd slowly lifted their pale faces, their voices shaking as they spoke."So… Mason already knows everything?""What does he mean by this? He's gone… and he doesn't want us anymore?""Are we… never going to see him again?"Lindsay yanked the letter from their hands, her expression ice cold. She folded it carefully, tucked it away, and only then spoke. "Mason just left the city. He didn't vanish off the face of the earth. Of course, you can still see him. The question is whether you're willing to risk Harry finding out the truth."In truth, these words weren't just meant for Helen and Stuart. They were also meant for herself.Did she want to see Mason again? Of course she did. But what right did she have to go near him now? After that day, Helen and Stuart left Lindsay alone for a long time. Harry, on the other

Valerie patted Ingrid on the shoulder, her tone gentle but firm. "You want space and time? I can give you that. But don't forget what you promised me. Call home regularly and come back for the holidays. Don't make Mom and Dad worry like this."Ingrid nodded. "Got it."Right before she left, Valerie turned to Mason and said politely, "Goodbye, Mr. Lakeworth."After walking Valerie out and watching her and her bodyguards disappear into the distance, Ingrid let out a long sigh. When she turned back to face Mason, a bit of her usual energy had returned."Thank you," she said. "My sister's willing to give me two years to let me do what I really love."He smiled at her. "You earned that yourself. Your hard work convinced her."…Over the next few days, under Mason's strict watch, Ingrid's hand gradually recovered, and their lives slid back into a normal rhythm. Now and then, Ingrid would show up at Mason's door to mooch a meal. In return, she would drop off a huge bag of snacks and ta
