"Father. Dad, you can't do this to me. I pay my tuition; I have my life ahead of me. I want to do everything I can to live my life well and stay out of your lane, dad. Just don't force me to do what I don't want to." Jennifer said, clasping her hands together.
It didn't matter to her if she had to beg or plead with him or whatever it took for her to get him to understand. Her father gave her only a scoff as an answer as he let go of the remote. It fell with a clattering sound, and he turned and walked out of the living room.Jennifer was livid with anger and heavily disappointed by how easy it was for her father to gamble on her future just to secure her brother's marriage."Jenny..." Her mother started to say, walking closer to her. "I am sorry, but... You have to accept it.""Accept it? Mum, this is my life we are talking about! How can I leave school and everything just so I can become some item that can be pawned to raise money for Paul's marriage? If he can't afford it, then he shouldn't get married!""You can't change anything." Her mother said, averting her eyes. "And in a situation where you are faced with something you can't change, the only thing you can do is to accept it. Accept it gallantly."Jennifer laughed humorlessly, nodding. "Mum. If you say stuff like this, how am I supposed to feel? I already feel so helpless and alone, so if you too won't take my side...how do I go on? How do I stop feeling this helplessness I feel right now, how?" Jennifer dropped her bag there and walked to her room, sealing the door. Her feet could not take her to the bed and she sank to the floor, tears rolling freely from her eyes. She had thought things like this only happened somewhere else. No matter how many times her father tried to show her that he held no value for her at all, she still respected and believed in him. But he had taken it too far this time. She stood up, wiping her tears, as an idea popped into her mind. She had been the one earning money for herself, working part-time jobs to raise tuition, so it would be easy for her to work her way through a living if she ran away from home to avoid her fate. She picked herself up, and walked to the small bed she used to share with Naomi, her now missing sister. She would leave all of this behind, as long as it meant escaping this marriage. That was all she wanted. One day, she would come back, but for now, this was the best she could think of.She waited patiently till everyone was asleep, and then picked up a small bag. She tiptoed lightly across the room and opened her door, then letting her eyes adjust to the darkness, she examined the room. It was too dark, though, and she believed no one would be there. She tiptoed to the middle of the living room when the light suddenly came on, and her brother Paul was standing there, a smile on his face."I knew you would try something like this. You want to run away from home to stop me from getting married?"Jennifer bit down on her lip as she calculated the distance between where she stood to the door, and the distance between where he stood and where she stood. If she lounged for the door right now, would he be able to catch her?Without a warning, however, he turned towards their father's room and started yelling. "Dad! Dad, come on out!"Benjamin opened the door, his eyes squinted from sleep. "What is it?"Her mother too came from the room, and she scanned everyone. It didn't take too long for everyone to realize what was happening."Dad. I caught her trying to run away so that she would avoid the plans you have for her. She wants to stop me from getting married, and that is why she is doing this!" Paul complained, all the while pointing an accusing finger at Jennifer. Her head was lowered, as she chomped down on her lip. She could have run for it before her father came out, why did she even allow herself to get caught like this?Benjamin walked closer to her. His eyes had lost the sleep he had been woken up from, and in its place was anger. Raw, insatiable anger."Is that true?" He bellowed. She looked up, but before she could say anything, Paul interjected."Why would I lie, dad? Can't you see? She even has her bag with her."A deafening slap landed on Jennifer's cheek and she was sent reeling to the ground, a small cut on the corner of her lips."Get up here. I said, get up!"She stood, her eyes filling with tears. Benjamin brought his hand up to hit her again when his wife suddenly came between them and took the slap on the face instead. She didn't let it phase her, as she opened her hands wide, protecting Jennifer."Please stop. She is only a child. You need to give her time to adjust to everything you have planned for her. It is so much to take in."Jennifer was now crying as her mother shielded her. Everything in her life was going wrong.Benjamin caught his wife by the hair, sending jokes of pain right to her head and causing her to yelp. "You want to defend this wench, right? You have been the one encouraging her stubbornness, haven't you?"He slapped her till she stopped feeling the pain in her cheeks, and when he let go of her hair, she fell to the floor. He was ready to kick her when Jennifer knelt and held his leg back, her hands shaking."I will do whatever you say. Just let her go.""Did you think you have a choice?" He yelled, kicking her away so she lay on the ground. He squatted and pulled her up by her hair, and dragged her across the room, to her room where he pushed her in.She hit her forehead on the edge of the single table in the room, but it didn't quite matter to him."You are going to stay here till the wedding. And if you try to do anything, I assure you, your mother will be the one to pay for it!" He spat and closed the door behind him. He heard the click of the key, and his footsteps as he walked away."Elijah?"Elijah stopped mid tracks and looked down at his watch. He was already running late for the office. He hated when his mother called early in the morning, especially since he knew just what she was about to say. With a silent gaze, he turned to his wife, Maria. She was a small woman who was well known for her kind, gentle dignity, with a smile that warmed the hearts of everyone she met. Her only concern was her lack of children. She and Elijah have been married for seven years, but she has never even conceived or had a miscarriage. The future seemed bleak.Elijah knew that was going to be the subject matter today too. He didn't really have the time for matters like these. He didn't want to indulge his parent's worry and didn't want to have to answer all their questions. In fact, he had been trying to escape going to the hospital for the tests they had been proposing.Maria gave him a small sad smile, then hung her head. He could see how much it affected her, and how much she w
The Mayor's office was situated in a large five story official building, and it was built in a very secure place. It had glass panes all over it that reflected the rays of the sun as Elijah, today without his normal security parked in front. He was two hours late which was very unusual for someone as punctual and responsible as himself, and he tried to push away the thought of everything else as he walked into his office."Good Morning, Sir." His secretary, Ivan said immediately Elijah alighted. He had been waiting for Elijah outside like he always did, and was getting so worried about why Elijah was running late."What is the latest development?" Elijah asked and they walked in a fast, yet dominating manner. There was no need to look twice to figure out who the boss was.Everyone always said Elijah looked like someone who was in his twenties. Even though he was a bit older, his body, physique and the agility with which he carried out his usual work suggested the opposite. His face, ho
"Mr. William Hugh? It rings a bell." Elijah said, then turned to Ivan who seemed to be trying to recall. His face suddenly brightened. He came forward to Elijah and leaned to his ear."He is a contractor who got some money in the last few years for his construction work."Elijah nodded. "Where do we see him?"The factory manager cleared his throat. "I really do not know. I just have the address we used to deliver the goods to...""You mean the construction site?""Yes, sir."Elijah tucked his hands into his pockets, raising his head slightly. He always did that when he wanted to question someone."Is there something you think we should know?"The factory manager opened his mouth, decided against it, shut it and shook his head. The fast transition made Elijah crack a humorless smile."If I do find something myself, I am afraid you won't have the leisure to do that."The factory manager swallowed and looked at Ivan, as if he was trying to see if he could intervene for him."Well...when h
Elijah sat back on the couch, giving half attention to his parents as they talked about the importance of the family lineage. Why he absolutely had to take another wife who was fertile and would give birth to healthy children who will walk the path that he has already made. It was a topic he hated hearing about, but out of respect for his parents would sit and listen to them. He had no intention of marriage. He had no intention of scouting for another wife. And even if they offered to give him one, he had no intention to meet her.His phone suddenly rang, and with a grateful expression smoothening out his features, he stood up and walked outside to answer it."Ivan, what is it?""I found out something, sir." Ivan sounded a little anxious over the phone."What is it?""The girl who works in Mr. William's favourite restaurant, she is going to get married to him.""What?" Surprise laced Elijah's voice. "I thought she was a young girl, isn't he over forty and a widower too?""Yes, he is.
Jennifer stood tearily in front of the mirror, trying hard not to cry so the beady eyed woman who was trying to fox her up would not freak out again. She has already freaked out so much, and Jennifer already had so many problems. The wedding gown was a bogus mess of a dress, one that was handed down to her by her mother and her mother had gotten it from a friend. All the fittings on the dress would not work, and Jennifer just accepted it as it is. She didn't even need it to find her. She was not a bride as far as she was concerned. The beady eyed woman wore the veil over her, and Jennifer could see a small hole to the side of it. Her wedding was a disaster, just like her life."You look beautiful." Sarah said, a little sad.Jennifer nodded. "That's what a mother says." She walked closer to Sarah, and gave a small smile."Mr. williams sent a car to..pick you up. We will be going now, right?""Do I have a choice?" Jennifer said simply, her brows slightly raised."You don't. Now get out
"What's happening?" Benjamin yelled as he walked in front of Elijah who approached calmly, fixing his suit."What do you mean? Who are you?""I am the father of the bride whose marriage you are sabotaging." He answered, trying to block his way. The officials have already put a handcuff over Mr. William's hands.Jennifer watched, unable to help the urge of excitement and hope that rose in her heart as the handcuffs clasped over his hands."Oh, you mean the man who willingly put his daughter up for same for some measly bucks?""How dare you...""Sir. You should really mind the way you speak to the mayor. You should be very careful." Ivan said, standing between Benjamin and Elijah. Elijah gave a small smile as he walked away, brushing Benjamin's shoulder lightly as he passed by him to the bride. Jennifer was standing there, now alone.Mr. Williams was dragged away, and Sarah cradled her relieved daughter in her arms. The wedding was a huge mess now, with guests trooping out and gossiping
Jennifer's deep blue eyes widened slowly, as she processed the information little by little. The mayor wanted to marry her? "Marry you?" She asked, trying hard not to let the surprise she felt seep into her voice. It was a bad attempt really, because Elijah could hear it loud and clear. He shrugged. "I know it sounds a little like what I just helped get out of, but I promise it will be different. I will respect you the way you deserve, and I don't even have the time to get in your way. Think of it as legally giving you a place to stay."She lowered her eyes from him as he stood up, and went to the coffee maker on the far table. He poured some into two cups and the strong scent of coffee filled the room."Here," He said to her and handed a cup. She collected it, then dropped it slowly on the table. Her mind reeled with possibilities as she studied his faraway expression. He didn't seem like he cared much for her as herself. Maybe he was taking care of her as more of a pitiable perso
"You want to marry jennifer? Why?" Benjamin asked, finding it hard to believe that a high profile person like Elijah would be interested in his rather shabby daughter."I believe I have already stated that. If you give your consent now, you won't have to worry about the wedding expenses or anything. I will take care of it all, and I will take Jennifer back with me today to meet my parents."Benjamin looked at Elijah. He would be hitting the jackpot if his daughter was to marry into a family like that, and since he already lost the fifty thousand dollars Mr. William had promised him, he could regain what he lost from the money he would get from Elijah."Alright." Benjamin started to say. Jennifer raised her head in surprise, but it wasn't all that shocking. Elijah was rich after all, and she was just a source of money. "I consent to the marriage."Elijah nodded. "You might get an invitation." He turned to Sarah. "I hope you will attend the wedding. If you do, I will personally send my
