Chapter 3

Author: West Peace
The golden window for saving a patient with amniotic fluid embolism was measured in mere minutes. It was essentially a battle between the doctor and the grim reaper.

In the past three years, Wilfred had saved five women from this condition. Only one life had slipped through his hands.

His success rate had solidified his position as the top obstetrician in the hospital's department.

At last, Bernice's call connected.

In a panic, she cried, "Wilfred, you need to come to the hospital! Your sister is experiencing an amniotic fluid embolism. You're the only one who can save her!"

On the other end of the call, the sounds of children laughing and glasses clinking filled the air.

"Aunt Bernice, must you spiral out of control like Ariana? Isn't this chaos enough already? I spend all 365 days of the year catering to her every need. I just want one peaceful day. Can't you just let me be?

"Kelly and I aren't involved in any way. Her family just returned, and I was simply having a meal with them. Please, just stop calling me!"

"I'm not making this up, Wilfred! Sarah is in grave danger. She has an amniotic fluid embolism, and only you can save her! You need to come back, or you'll regret it!"

"I'll only regret it if I come back!" Wilfred snapped, his voice devoid of any warmth.

Hearing Wilfred's response, Susan broke down.

Clutching the phone, she cried out, "Wilfred, Aunt Bernice isn't lying! Sarah's life is at risk! Even if you don't trust Ariana or Aunt Bernice, can't you trust me? Please come back!"

I let out a quiet sigh. To me, Susan was nothing more than a traitor. Despite knowing about Wilfred's affair, she still helped him cover it up. But to Sarah, she was the perfect mother.

"Wilfred, did you hear what your mom just said? Do you really think she'd lie to you? Hurry up and come back!" Bernice shouted, panic evident in her voice.

"Mom, you—" Wilfred's voice faltered.

"Ah! Wilfred, my eyes... They hurt so much!"

A woman's anguished cries erupted from the other end of the line.

In the next moment, the stern voice of an adult scolding a child cut through the noise. "How could you shoot marbles at Ms. Shapiro's face?"

Wilfred's voice softened with concern. "Kelly, does it hurt? Stay still. I'm a doctor, so let me take a look."

But in the blink of an eye, his tone hardened as he said into the phone, "Mom, stop with the excuses. Even if what you're saying is true, it doesn't matter. I've had too much to drink, so I won't be able to make the drive back."

With that, he mercilessly hung up.

The phone slipped from Susan's hand, hitting the floor with a sharp crack. She collapsed in a heap, her head slamming against the ground.

She remained still, trapped in a moment that seemed to stretch on forever.

Bernice dropped to her knees beside her, tears silently falling down her cheeks.

"How did Wilfred become like this?" she murmured. "How could he abandon his family for another woman? What kind of monster is he?"

As I helped Susan to her feet, my eyes landed on the bruise forming on her forehead. She didn't deserve a son like Wilfred.

Still, I felt no pity for her. After all, she was partly responsible for my death in my past life.

After what felt like an eternity, the door to the operating room swung open again.

"I'm sorry. We did everything we could."

Sarah and her unborn child were gone. At that moment, Susan seemed to lose all semblance of life.

She couldn't bring herself to eat or drink. Holding onto Sarah's clothes, she broke down, sobbing without restraint.

Furious, Bernice recounted everything that had happened at the hospital to each relative. She didn't hold back, calling Wilfred a good-for-nothing.

Henry and Edna broke into even greater sorrow upon discovering that the baby she carried was a boy.

Matthew returned from out of town as quickly as he could. Seeing Sarah and their unborn baby lifeless before him, his face contorted with agony, and his eyes turned red with grief.

Determined to leave no enemy unscathed, Matthew proceeded with far greater caution than Susan. In the final three days of his month-long disappearance, he finally exacted his revenge. He was far more brutal than I ever imagined.I had assumed that Kelly and Lucas were his only targets. But one night, he stormed into the Shapiro residence and slaughtered all six family members. The victims included Kelly, Lucas, Kelly's parents, as well as her brother and sister-in-law.Lucas was left to bleed to death after his limbs were severed.Kelly had her organs removed, and her tongue was cut out.The remaining family members were killed with a single, fatal blow. That night, Wilfred was on a night shift at the hospital. After Matthew killed the entire Shapiro family, he sent Wilfred a message from Kelly's phone."Wilfred, I've prepared some snacks for you. Since your mother's asleep upstairs, I can't go up. You'll need to come downstairs to get them yourself."Wilfred cast a quick gla

"Wilfred, you're nothing but a heartless monster. Just being in the same room as you makes me sick. You'd better sign the papers. Tomorrow, we'll go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce."Hearing the chill in my voice, Wilfred fired back without hesitation, "In your dreams!"Holding up my phone, I said, "Fine. Don't sign it if you don't want to. But just so you know, this recording will make its way to everyone you know."Without a word, Wilfred yanked the phone from my hand and slammed it hard onto the ground.I stepped back, increasing the distance between us. "I've set up a timed email. If I don't cancel it by 3:00 pm, it'll go straight to the maternity hospital. Matthew and every major media outlet will also get a copy.""Ariana, why are you doing this to me? I've told you a thousand times that there's nothing going on between me and Kelly. I haven't betrayed you. How much longer are you going to keep making a scene?""Making a scene? At this point, do you honestly thin

After packing my clothes and important documents, I rented a place and reached out to a divorce lawyer."Mr. Gomez, I need you to draw up a divorce settlement. I'm walking away empty-handed."I couldn't afford to wait any longer. The O'Neil family could try to blame me for Sarah's death again, all to shield Wilfred's reputation.I never doubted their ability to go that far.In my past life, they were fully aware of my innocence, but they decided to play ignorant. When I walked into Susan's house holding the divorce agreement, my gut feeling turned out to be right."Ariana, how dare you show your face here? I already talked to Lucas. He told me it was you who pushed him to hurt Sarah! You're a murderer!"Wilfred jabbed a finger at me, his voice laced with accusation.Susan's eyes widened in shock, while Bernice's face contorted with hatred.I let out a bitter laugh and slammed the divorce agreement down on the table."Wilfred, everyone knows how Sarah died. If you keep blaming

Bernice lunged forward, trying to stop Matthew. "Hey! Stop! Don't hit him anymore! If you keep going, you'll kill him!"Enduring the pain coursing through my body, I let out a cold, bitter laugh. It was obvious they were all cut from the same cloth."It wasn't me. It's all Ariana's fault!" Wilfred howled. "Because she was jealous of Sarah, she deliberately misled me and stopped me from coming back. It was her! She's the one who killed Sarah!"Gritting his teeth, Wilfred staggered to his feet and lunged at me.The veins on Matthew's forehead bulged with fury. Had Henry and Edna not been there that fateful day, he might have fallen for Wilfred's deceit. After shoving Wilfred back down onto the ground, Matthew pulled out his phone and showed him a video. It was the surveillance footage from the day of the incident. In the video, a child sprinted from afar and shoved Sarah to the ground. He kicked her in the stomach, raining down cruel, venomous words.Of course, it was I who had a

"You were looking for Sarah, weren't you? Well, here she is," Bernice said, her voice laced with mockery. She wiped the rain from her face and pointed toward the coffin.Wilfred stumbled forward, his legs buckling beneath him, before he crumpled to the ground."Who are you trying to deceive with this act?" Bernice demanded. "When Ariana called you to come back, you accused her of lying. When I asked you, you turned it on me. Even when your mother begged on her knees for you to return, you said she was lying too."Did you think we were all lying? Or is Sarah's life worth less to you than a dinner with some other woman?""No! That's not it! Sarah is my sister. I've raised her since she was little. I've always treated her like my own daughter!"The truth was, Sarah and I had never seen eye to eye. Though she lost her father at a young age, Susan and Wilfred had coddled her, raising her into a spoiled, headstrong woman.Due to Wilfred's constant disregard for me, Sarah had never spa

Matthew couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that Sarah was suddenly gone. He had only been away on a three-day business trip. Before he left, they had spent hours talking about their dreams, picturing a future together as a happy family of three. After learning the truth from Henry and Edna, Matthew wiped away his tears and silently assisted me with the funeral arrangements. No one thought to inform Wilfred, especially after discovering he was dining with Kelly Shapiro's family at a hotel across from the hospital. He couldn't even be bothered to come over and confront the truth firsthand.Susan had completely given up on him.But for such an important event, there was no way I would let Wilfred stay away. The day Sarah was to be buried in her hometown, I made sure to have someone notify him a day ahead. On the morning of the burial, rain drizzled from the sky. I stood by the car, sheltered beneath the canopy of my umbrella. I watched as the crowd solemnly carried Sarah's co
