Chapter 2

Author: West Peace
Just before I returned home earlier, Susan had been on a video call with Wilfred. He was trying to make her keep me a little longer, so that I wouldn't get in the way of him and his beloved.

Watching Susan's nervous demeanor, I purposely hurried back, my breath heavy and ragged.

"Susan, Wilfred's colleague said that he's not working late tonight. I called him as well, but he didn't pick up!"

A flicker of guilt flashed across Susan's face, but she quickly masked it, trying to defend Wilfred. "Maybe someone asked him to step out for a bit. If you can't reach him now, try again a little later."

At that moment, Bernice O'Neil, Wilfred's aunt, arrived on the scene. She was accompanied by Sarah's in-laws, Henry Pruett and Edna McKellen.

As soon as Bernice spotted me, her brow knitted into a frown. "Where's Wilfred? Isn't he the obstetrician? Why haven't you notified him? What exactly are you doing here then?"

Bernice was my late father-in-law's older sister. Since his passing, she had taken charge of all matters concerning the O'Neil family.

In my previous life, Bernice had slapped me twice when the doctor said Sarah had passed away.

"You're Sarah's sister-in-law, for crying out loud. How could you just stand there and watch her die?" she had snapped.

This time, I refused to let her have that power over me.

I forced a bitter smile. "Bernice, Wilfred can't be reached. He told me this morning that he was working overtime, but when I checked just now, his colleagues said he didn't come in today. I've tried calling him, but there's been no answer."

Susan paused, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. But in the end, she chose to remain silent.

"Are you an idiot? Why didn't you keep trying if you couldn't get through?" Bernice retorted.

I quickly pulled out my phone and kept dialing Wilfred's number repeatedly.

On the tenth attempt, the call finally went through.

I switched it to speaker immediately.

"Honey—"

"Are you crazy? Why are you calling nonstop? Didn't I tell you I'm working overtime? I'm busy! Stop bothering me!"

"Honey, Sarah had a bad fall and is bleeding heavily. She's still in surgery and hasn't come out yet. If you're not at the hospital, then where could you possibly be?"

There was a sudden silence on the other end. Out of nowhere, a woman's sharp, pretentious voice broke through.

"Ariana, the fact that you went to the hospital to look for Wilfred says a lot about your trust in him. Wilfred, do you think your colleagues would misunderstand the situation?

"Ariana, if you want answers, why don't you ask Wilfred directly? Instead, you show up at his workplace without a word and even wish harm on Sarah. Doesn't that seem a little malicious?"

"No, I'm not bluffing. Wilfred, Sarah is actually in the operating room. If you don't believe me, you can—"

Wilfred stopped me short. "Enough! If you're going to lie, at least make it believable. How could Sarah possibly fall at her mother-in-law's house? Even if you're jealous or throwing a tantrum, that's no excuse to cause trouble at my workplace.

"If my year-end evaluation takes a hit because of this, I won't let you off easy."

Before I could speak again, the call was suddenly disconnected.

The murmurs at the entrance to the operating room faded into an eerie silence.

I forced a bitter smile, pretending to be deeply wounded.

Susan quickly averted her gaze. A flicker of embarrassment flashed across Bernice's face, but she stayed silent.

Henry and Edna sighed, their faces twisted in disdain.

Just then, the operating room door flew open. A nurse hurried out, anxiety written all over her face.

"The patient is experiencing an amniotic fluid embolism! Aren't you all Dr. O'Neil's family? Someone, please contact him immediately!"

My eyes widened in surprise. Everything was unfolding just as it had in my previous life.

Susan's legs gave way, and she collapsed to the floor.

Meanwhile, Bernice couldn't keep up her indifferent facade any longer.

She quickly dialed Wilfred's number, whispering to herself, "It's okay, it's okay. Wilfred is the best obstetrician. He's saved countless patients with amniotic fluid embolism. He can definitely save Sarah."

Determined to leave no enemy unscathed, Matthew proceeded with far greater caution than Susan. In the final three days of his month-long disappearance, he finally exacted his revenge. He was far more brutal than I ever imagined.I had assumed that Kelly and Lucas were his only targets. But one night, he stormed into the Shapiro residence and slaughtered all six family members. The victims included Kelly, Lucas, Kelly's parents, as well as her brother and sister-in-law.Lucas was left to bleed to death after his limbs were severed.Kelly had her organs removed, and her tongue was cut out.The remaining family members were killed with a single, fatal blow. That night, Wilfred was on a night shift at the hospital. After Matthew killed the entire Shapiro family, he sent Wilfred a message from Kelly's phone."Wilfred, I've prepared some snacks for you. Since your mother's asleep upstairs, I can't go up. You'll need to come downstairs to get them yourself."Wilfred cast a quick gla

"Wilfred, you're nothing but a heartless monster. Just being in the same room as you makes me sick. You'd better sign the papers. Tomorrow, we'll go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce."Hearing the chill in my voice, Wilfred fired back without hesitation, "In your dreams!"Holding up my phone, I said, "Fine. Don't sign it if you don't want to. But just so you know, this recording will make its way to everyone you know."Without a word, Wilfred yanked the phone from my hand and slammed it hard onto the ground.I stepped back, increasing the distance between us. "I've set up a timed email. If I don't cancel it by 3:00 pm, it'll go straight to the maternity hospital. Matthew and every major media outlet will also get a copy.""Ariana, why are you doing this to me? I've told you a thousand times that there's nothing going on between me and Kelly. I haven't betrayed you. How much longer are you going to keep making a scene?""Making a scene? At this point, do you honestly thin

After packing my clothes and important documents, I rented a place and reached out to a divorce lawyer."Mr. Gomez, I need you to draw up a divorce settlement. I'm walking away empty-handed."I couldn't afford to wait any longer. The O'Neil family could try to blame me for Sarah's death again, all to shield Wilfred's reputation.I never doubted their ability to go that far.In my past life, they were fully aware of my innocence, but they decided to play ignorant. When I walked into Susan's house holding the divorce agreement, my gut feeling turned out to be right."Ariana, how dare you show your face here? I already talked to Lucas. He told me it was you who pushed him to hurt Sarah! You're a murderer!"Wilfred jabbed a finger at me, his voice laced with accusation.Susan's eyes widened in shock, while Bernice's face contorted with hatred.I let out a bitter laugh and slammed the divorce agreement down on the table."Wilfred, everyone knows how Sarah died. Bernice lunged forward, trying to stop Matthew. "Hey! Stop! Don't hit him anymore! If you keep going, you'll kill him!"Enduring the pain coursing through my body, I let out a cold, bitter laugh. It was obvious they were all cut from the same cloth."It wasn't me. It's all Ariana's fault!" Wilfred howled. "Because she was jealous of Sarah, she deliberately misled me and stopped me from coming back. It was her! She's the one who killed Sarah!"Gritting his teeth, Wilfred staggered to his feet and lunged at me.The veins on Matthew's forehead bulged with fury. Had Henry and Edna not been there that fateful day, he might have fallen for Wilfred's deceit. After shoving Wilfred back down onto the ground, Matthew pulled out his phone and showed him a video. It was the surveillance footage from the day of the incident. In the video, a child sprinted from afar and shoved Sarah to the ground. He kicked her in the stomach, raining down cruel, venomous words.Of course, it was I who had a

"You were looking for Sarah, weren't you? Well, here she is," Bernice said, her voice laced with mockery. She wiped the rain from her face and pointed toward the coffin.Wilfred stumbled forward, his legs buckling beneath him, before he crumpled to the ground."Who are you trying to deceive with this act?" Bernice demanded. "When Ariana called you to come back, you accused her of lying. When I asked you, you turned it on me. Even when your mother begged on her knees for you to return, you said she was lying too."Did you think we were all lying? Or is Sarah's life worth less to you than a dinner with some other woman?""No! That's not it! Sarah is my sister. I've raised her since she was little. I've always treated her like my own daughter!"The truth was, Sarah and I had never seen eye to eye. Though she lost her father at a young age, Susan and Wilfred had coddled her, raising her into a spoiled, headstrong woman.Due to Wilfred's constant disregard for me, Sarah had never spa
