Chapter 2

Author: Fieldside Concession Stand
At dawn the next morning, the dragon envoy’s flying ship came to rest on the sea.

“Ten thousand pearls of the finest quality. If there’s even one pearl missing, I’ll tear your palace down!”

The dragon envoy smashed his wineglass on the floor.

An uproar erupted in the great hall.

The High Elder jabbed a finger in my face and began shouting abuse.

“This is all your fault, you cursed girl! Her Majesty exhausted her power giving birth to you and fell into a coma. Our treasury is empty, yet you can’t produce a single tear!

“Hand her over! Strip off her royal scales and cut out her sinews. Give them to the dragons as payment. They can put them to use!”

The crowd closed in on me.

Standing in the center of the hall, I let them rant and spit at me.

My poison coursed through my blood and spread throughout my body.

The more they cursed me, the better.

The hotter my anger burned, the faster the quicksilver fused within me.

Zyphira pushed through the crowd and stepped forward.

“Please, honored envoy, calm yourself! Elders, wait!”

She drew a dagger and slit her wrist without hesitation.

Blood gushed from the wound.

She began chanting a forbidden spell of the sea serpents.

Her blood mingled with the tears she shed for show, then hardened in midair into thousands of strangely colored blood pearls.

There were exactly ten thousand.

Satisfied, the dragon envoy accepted the pearls and left.

Zyphira’s knees buckled. She fell straight into Althirion’s arms.

He caught her and shouted in anguish.

“Summon the royal physician! Now!”

Zyphira struggled to catch her breath.

“Althirion, don’t blame Mirelle. For her sake, and for our people, I’d gladly give every last drop of my blood.”

Ceruleth lunged at me and seized me by the collar.

“You cold-blooded monster! You just stood there while Zyphira cut herself and bled for you! She’s sacrificing herself to keep you alive, and you don’t even care. Have you no conscience?”

He hurled me to the floor.

Haelthar walked over and kicked me hard in the stomach.

I let the force of the blow send me rolling several yards across the floor.

Shattered shells littered the floor of the great hall beneath me.

Their sharp edges dug into my back and palms.

Warm blood spread across the cold floor.

“Even a worm is more useful than you!” Haelthar bellowed in fury. “If you fail to deliver the tribute again, I’ll make you wish you were dead!”

I lay face down, fighting the pain as the shell fragments ground into my flesh.

Resting in Althirion’s arms, Zyphira gave me a taunting smile.

I lowered my head and made my voice tremble.

“Zyphira, take me to that enchanted spring on land. I want to do my part for our people, too.”

Zyphira gave a feeble nod.

“Of course. I’ll take you tomorrow.”

That night, I swam alone to a reef in the deepest reaches of the ocean.

The wound on my palm had yet to heal.

I pressed my hand against the rock and released the faintest trace of my power.

It carried the scent of poisonous quicksilver.

Several leviathans lurking within thirty miles of the reef let out terrified cries and fled the waters in a frenzy.

At dawn, we set out for land.

The underwater currents were vicious.

Althirion brought out the Warding Dome, our people’s only enchanted relic that could protect against both water and fire.

He lowered it over Zyphira’s head.

“Making those blood pearls took too much out of you. This will keep you safe.”

I had just used a shapeshifting spell to turn my tail into legs.

My scales had peeled off during the transformation, leaving raw, open wounds that burned unbearably.

I stood where I was.

Althirion did not even glance at me.

“Keep up. If you fall behind, no one’s coming back for you.”

They surrounded Zyphira to keep her safely in their midst.

I stumbled along at the rear.

Saltwater seeped into my open wounds. Every step I took hurt.

We were halfway to shore when a swarm of low-tier swordfish ambushed us from the reef.

“Keep them away from Zyphira!”

Althirion drew his sword.

My brothers formed a tight ring around her, guarding each other’s backs.

An enormous swordfish broke through the line and came straight for me.

“Mirelle, I’m sorry! Please spare me!”She sobbed uncontrollably, all traces of her former poise gone.“Remember when we were children? You were hungry, and I gave you a piece of candied seaweed. Please spare me for that.”I ignored her. With a turn of my wrist, I shaped the quicksilver poison into blades. They sliced through her clothes and stripped away the serpent scales she had always taken such pride in.Zyphira writhed in agony.I found the silver box of parasitic sea serpent eggs among the rubble.I went to her and pressed my foot against her lower jaw to force her mouth open.“You love making pearls, don’t you? Then taste your own.”I grabbed a handful of eggs and forced them into her mouth.“Swallow.”She fought to spit them out.I pressed harder. Her jaw cracked beneath my foot. She swallowed the eggs in a gasp of pain.Soon, something began writhing beneath the skin of her belly. The venomous serpents hatched inside her and began eating their way through her

I hovered above the abyss and looked down at the eight men kneeling at its edge.My severed tendons had fully healed. My legs were covered in the gleaming silver scales of a sovereign.Only the queens of our people had ever borne that mark.“Mirelle! You’re alive! Thank the gods!”Overjoyed, Althirion scrambled to his feet and rushed forward to embrace me.I did not move. The power radiating from me erupted into a crushing shock wave.It slammed into them. All eight were hurled against the stone walls. They crumpled to the ground, coughing up blood.“Don’t touch me. You disgust me,” I said coldly. In the distance, the defenses collapsed completely.A dragon general led tens of thousands of sea warriors through the currents. They were cutting their way to the abyss.“This is who you begged to save you?”The general rode on the back of a giant whale, a trident in his hand.“The merfolk must be desperate if a useless girl who can’t even shed a tear is all they have left!”I

The sea anemone’s venom spread rapidly from Althirion’s wounded shoulder. The wound darkened to a blackish purple.Althirion fell to the floor and dropped his sword beside him. “Althirion!” Ceruleth drove the anemone back with his sword and moved to shield his brother.Althirion’s face contorted with pain.He looked back at Zyphira with desperate hope.“Zyphira, you’re our Holy Maiden! Save me! Use your cleansing light to draw out the poisoned blood!”Zyphira groped blindly across the floor. Two monstrous crocodiles crawled toward them, their jaws gaping.Zyphira heard them coming and trembled with fear. Her hand found Althirion’s calf. The dark magic of the abyss flooded my veins.Together, the quicksilver poison and dark magic healed my ankles, knitting the severed tendons back together and restoring the torn flesh.Up above, the palace was in an uproar. The dragon envoy had returned to the great hall with a large force at his back.He kicked over the coral table in front of him.“Where are the flawless pearls? Our crown prince needs them for a potion to stabilize his powers. If you’re even one pearl short, I’ll slaughter every last one of you!” the envoy shouted.Zyphira sat in a wheelchair in the center of the great hall. Her face was deathly pale.Blinded and gravely weakened by the volcanic fire, she could barely hold her human form. Her serpent’s tail hung limply beneath her skirt.“Zyphira, please. Just once more, for our people,” Althirion said, clasping her hand.Zyphira bit the tip of her tongue and drew on what little life force she had left. She traced the signs of her people’s forbidden spell

The pearl rolled across the sand.“Would you believe me if I said I didn’t do it?” I asked.Althirion stepped forward and brought his foot down hard on the pearl.“The proof is right in front of us! You stole the pearl and tried to burn her alive! You’re rotten to the core!”Haelthar stepped forward and wrenched my arms behind my back to force me down.“Why are we wasting our breath on this wretched girl? Drag her back to the palace and let Mother deal with her!”I did not resist as they shoved me along and dragged me back to the ocean floor. As we entered the city, merfolk lined the streets, pointing and muttering. The sight of Zyphira’s injuries had them shouting abuse at me.Rotten sea greens and clumps of mud struck my head. I ignored them. The palace was brightly lit.Mother reclined on a coral couch. She was clutching her chest and coughing violently. Her life was hanging by a thread.Althirion hurried forward with Zyphira in his arms.“Mother, that vicious girl bli

Zyphira’s screams rang out through the night.Chains of red flame gripped her limbs and left her suspended in midair. The lava’s heat spread through the chains. Her bracers, protected by powerful wards against fire, cracked with a sickening crunch.Cracks spread from the center of each bracer. Moments later, they shattered and fell to the ground. The chains pressed against her pale skin. Her flesh sizzled. She screamed and thrashed, desperate to break free.Every frantic movement only tightened the chains. The red welts on her skin quickly turned into blackened burns.“Let me down! What have you done to me?” Zyphira screamed.I walked slowly forward until I stood directly beneath her.The rock was scorching hot.Blisters formed on the soles of my feet, but I kept going.I reached up and seized her by the throat. An unbearable pressure built behind my eyes. The deadly poison that had brewed inside me for a century before my birth was finally unleashed.A silvery drop ga
