Chapter 2

Author: Bowl of Rice
I hadn't been calm at all. I'd only been pretending. I loved Axel so much that I'd been willing to throw away my pride for him.

He used to tell me all the time, "Valerie, you're crazy."

So even though I'd finally decided to walk away from him, it still hurt like hell.

I cried so hard as I drove that I could barely hold the wheel steady. Eventually, I had to pull over and wait until I got myself back under control.

It was well past midnight. Most of the shops along the street were closed, and only a vending machine on the corner was still lit.

I bought a bottle of water and awkwardly tried to twist off the cap with my injured right hand. The cuts had only just started to clot, but the effort tore them open again.

I couldn't grip the cap hard enough to twist it off, but I didn't care. I kept trying, almost as if I were punishing myself.

Maybe if my hand hurt enough, it would take my mind off the pain in my chest.

Blood soaked through the gauze and stained the bottle cap red.

Suddenly, someone pulled the bottle out of my hand. He twisted the cap off and handed the bottle back to me with a teasing smile.

"I've been watching you struggle with that for a while. Here. Drink."

Most people would've been scared. It was the middle of the night, and some stranger with a gun tucked into his waistband and blood on his face had just walked up to me on a street corner.

He looked like someone you didn't want to mess with.

But Axel was right about one thing. I was crazy.

I took the bottle without hesitation and drank from it with my left hand.

"Thanks," I said politely.

"No problem. I was thirsty too. I was going to just take it from you. Someone put a bullet through my phone, and I don't have any cash on me. But then I saw you and figured you had enough problems already."

I looked him over.

Sure enough, there was a faint smell of blood in the air. I'd assumed it was coming from my own wounds, but apparently, it wasn't.

I opened my car door. "You're thirsty because you've lost too much blood. Your body's trying to compensate. At this rate, you're going to go into shock. Get in. I'll take you to the hospital."

The man raised an eyebrow, then shook his head. "Thanks, but I can't go to the hospital."

I was starting to lose patience. If he actually passed out, there was no way I could move a guy his size by myself.

So I grabbed him and shoved him into the passenger seat. "I have access to a private hospital."

He passed out on the way there.

Luckily, I got him there in time. The doctors stitched up his wound and gave him two units of blood. After that, he was out of danger.

By the time I finally left the hospital, the sun was already up.

My phone buzzed twice in my pocket.

Mom and Dad had just landed in their private jet. They'd been so worried about Rosalie that they'd flown back overnight.

Apparently, they'd remembered they had a biological daughter too, because they invited me to dinner at Quade Manor.

I was going to make up an excuse, but Mom and Dad were unusually persistent. They called me a few times and insisted I come over that evening.

They sounded so eager to have me there that I could almost believe they really loved me. So I agreed to go.

But the moment I stepped inside Quade Manor, I knew I'd been tricked.

This wasn't just dinner. Rosalie was throwing a dinner party, and Mom and Dad had used dinner as an excuse to get me there because they could never say no to her.

The whole thing had been set up to humiliate me. A giant message on the screen made that perfectly clear.

"Congratulations! Axel Hooper finally got rid of his clingy ex, Valerie Gates!"

A massive table had been set up in the middle of the main hall. Axel and Rosalie were running the betting pool.

Everyone was betting on how many days I'd last before I came crawling back to Axel and begged him to take me back.

The second I walked in, the room erupted with laughter and taunts.

"Come on, Valerie, give us a hint. How long are you planning to hold out this time? I put a lot of money on you, so don't make me lose too much!" one guy called out, laughing.

"Oh, please. You really think she'll make it past three days? All Axel has to do is snap his fingers and say, 'Babe, I'm sorry. From now on, you're the only one I love,' and she'll come running.

"She does it every time. At this point, she's practically his lapdog!"

"Seriously, don't you have any self-respect? Anyone can see Axel only has eyes for Rosie. If he doesn't love you, then you're the other woman, not Rosie. Get it? His girlfriend? My ass!"

Axel walked over slowly with an arm around Rosalie.

He gave me an amused smile. "Valerie, want to get back together? If you say yes today, I promise I'll only love you from now on."

I stood frozen, numb all over, my head buzzing. For a moment, I couldn't even process what I'd just heard.Axel had to be out of his mind to ask me to run away from my own wedding.I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. "Axel, we broke up! What part of that don't you understand?"He stayed on one knee. "I know, Valerie. I treated you terribly. I hurt you over and over because of Rosalie. I ignored you and took your love for granted because I thought you'd never leave me, no matter what I did. That's why I kept hurting you."His eyes reddened, and his voice caught with emotion, as if his own words had moved him."I've done a lot of thinking lately, and I finally realized how badly I screwed up. The truth is, I love you, Valerie."He held the velvet ring box out to me. "I swear I'll treat you right this time. I'll love you, take care of you, and never hurt you like that again. I'll give you the best of everything."Please, just trust me one more time. We can start ov

The conference room fell silent.Dad looked from the agreement to me, unable to make up his mind.Mom and Rosalie looked ready to speak several times, but each time, they held back. They kept glancing at Dad, silently urging him on.Finally, he made his choice."I'll take the money."Mom and Rosalie both let out a breath, the tension visibly leaving them.Dad signed the agreement, then slumped back into his chair, looking defeated."When will the money come through?" he asked.I looked at his signature on the page. Any last trace of emotion I had toward them finally faded."Avery, help Mr. Quade with the remaining paperwork. The money will be paid in installments as outlined in the agreement.""Yes, Ms. Gates."I stood and walked out. From then on, we would go our separate ways. There was nothing left between us.In the end, the Quade family went bankrupt anyway. The money I'd given them kept them afloat for barely two weeks before something else went wrong. I never found

Ever since Jasper announced our relationship at dinner, my name suddenly seemed to open doors everywhere. Some of them offered access to contacts and projects that would've been completely out of reach for me before. That was what having the Orton family behind me could do.And it wasn't just business.Invitations to private gatherings, networking events, and charity dinners started piling up on my desk. Even people I hadn't seen since our days at the orphanage suddenly wanted to reconnect. It was getting ridiculous.Thankfully, Jasper made wedding planning easy on me. He took care of almost everything himself. All I had to do was pick out my wedding dress and jewelry and give my opinion here and there. I barely had to think about any of it.Before long, everyone in our circle was saying that Jasper spoiled me rotten.I rubbed the spot between my

"Axel, you're the last person who gets to say that to me," I said.I let go of Jasper's hand and stepped closer, taking a long look at the face I'd once loved enough to lose myself over. I'd suffered because of this man, fallen apart over him, and thrown away every bit of dignity I had.But now, all I felt was a deep exhaustion. Whatever I'd once felt for him was gone."Axel, I gave you everything I had. I gave you my whole heart. If you didn't want it, you could've said so from the start."I tilted my head slightly, thinking back."But you didn't. You let me believe you felt the same way. You swore you loved me and only me. Then you cheated on me with Rosalie again and again as if it meant nothing."You had no respect for my feelings or my dignity. Every time you betrayed me, you watched me fall apart. You drove me crazy. Did playing with my feelings make you feel good, Axel?"I held his gaze, determined to get an answer.Axel looked away, visibly rattled. His throat worked as

Rosalie didn't dare say a word. After seeing what Jasper had just done to Frank, she was practically cowering behind Mom and Dad.Mom stumbled forward and forced a smile. "M-Mr. Orton, this is all just a misunderstanding. Rosie's young and didn't know any better. She was only joking around."Dad hurried to back her up, trying to make the whole thing sound like no big deal. "Exactly! Rosie was only trying to help. She knew Valerie was single and wanted to introduce her to someone."She didn't mean any harm! She had no idea what kind of man Mr. Williams was. He fooled her too."Jasper didn't even acknowledge them. He clearly wasn't about to let Rosalie off that easily. With that going nowhere, Dad turned to me instead. "Valerie, say something! Tell Mr. Orton what really happened. Rosie's your sister. She's young and doesn't know any better, but she meant well."You know she wouldn't hurt you on purpose."Mom quickly chimed in, "That's right, Valerie. We're family! If there's been

The entire room fell silent.Jasper's face was dark with fury, and I had no doubt he was seconds away from pulling the trigger. I tore myself free from Rosalie's grip and rushed over, grabbing Jasper wrist.I lowered my voice. "Don't shoot! Jasper, not here. Everyone's watching, and there are too many people around. Word will get out!"He turned to me, a vein throbbing at his temple."He didn't even get a chance to touch me.""Valerie, you don't think he deserves to die?"I tightened my grip and forced his arm a little lower. "Please let him go. I don't want his blood on my hands."Jasper's chest heaved with anger, but after a long moment, he finally lowered the gun. He tucked it back into his waistband and motioned to the bodyguards behind him."Break his arms and legs, then get him off the island."Frank was still dazed from having his head slammed against the floor and barely seemed to know what was happening. But the moment he heard Jasper speak again, he snapped back to h
